Do not decide from the word “diesel” or from the blend percentage alone. Identify the exact machine and fuel, then verify that machine’s owner’s manual, engine documentation and warranty approve that blend for your market and operating conditions. If the documents do not clearly approve it, ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before refueling.
For biodiesel, U.S. Department of Energy guidance says B5 is generally approved for diesel engines, while B6–B20 requires an engine-maker and warranty check. Higher blends, cold weather, long storage and different equipment types can add restrictions.
Why a generic “diesels can use biodiesel” answer is unsafe
“Diesel blend” is not a precise fuel name. It may mean a biodiesel blend such as B5 or B20, or a different renewable fuel with different properties and approval requirements. This guide addresses biodiesel blends. Do not apply its conclusions to an unspecified renewable fuel.

A fuel can meet the correct quality standard and still be outside the blend limit in your warranty. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) advise checking the original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) engine warranty, especially for blends above B5.

There is no universal maximum blend for every diesel car, truck, tractor, generator, boat or construction machine. The same percentage can be acceptable in one engine and disallowed in another because of fuel-system materials, emissions equipment, calibration, temperature limits or warranty language.
Start by identifying both the fuel and the machine
Record the machine’s exact identity
Write down the make, model, model year, engine family or engine model, and the country or market where the machine is operated. For equipment, capture both the equipment model and the engine maker; a tractor or generator manual may defer fuel decisions to a separate engine manual.
- Passenger vehicle or truck: vehicle make, model, year, engine option and market.
- Tractor, generator, boat or industrial machine: equipment model, engine model, serial-number range if listed, and market.
- Imported or used equipment: the market for which the engine was certified, not merely the country where you bought it.
Identify the proposed fuel precisely
Read the pump label, delivery ticket or supplier certificate. Record whether the fuel is conventional petroleum diesel, B5, B6–B20, B100 (neat biodiesel), or another renewable fuel. “B20” means a blend containing 6% to 20% biodiesel, while B5 contains no more than 5% biodiesel. If the seller cannot state the blend percentage, pause the purchase until it can.

Check every relevant document
Look in the owner’s manual, engine-maker manual, fuel or refueling section, maintenance schedule, emissions documentation and warranty terms. Search the documents for “biodiesel,” “B5,” “B20,” “fuel requirements,” “approved fuels,” “fuel quality” and “warranty exclusions.” A vehicle manual may contain only a summary; the engine manual or warranty can set a lower limit.
For tractors, generators, boats and other equipment, read the engine documentation as well as the equipment manual. Government guidance specifically recommends checking the OEM engine warranty when considering higher blends.

Interpret silence conservatively
If the manual mentions diesel but does not state a biodiesel percentage, do not treat that silence as approval. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer with the machine identification, proposed blend, fuel standard and operating conditions. Ask for a written answer when possible and retain it with the maintenance records.
Follow this verification sequence before refueling
- Define the fuel. Confirm the biodiesel percentage and whether the product is actually biodiesel-blended diesel rather than another renewable fuel.
- Define the unit. Record make, model, year, engine family and operating country or market.
- Find the limit. Read the owner’s and engine manuals and the warranty for an explicit B5, B20, B100 or other limit.
- Confirm the fuel standard. Check that the product meets the standard named by the documentation. In DOE guidance, B5 falls under ASTM D975; B6–B20 is covered by ASTM D7467.
- Check conditions. Review temperature, storage-duration and infrequent-use cautions. A blend approved in warm weather may have a separate cold-weather restriction.
- Check the market. Verify that the label, standard and warranty language apply to the country where the machine is fueled.
- Resolve uncertainty. Ask the maker or dealer before putting the fuel in the tank if any percentage, standard or condition is unclear.
- Buy compliant fuel. Once compatibility is confirmed, use a commercial source that can identify the blend and quality certification required by the manual and local rules.
Understand B5, B20 and B100 labels

ASTM documents describe fuel properties and test requirements. They do not grant approval for a particular engine. ASTM editions can change, so verify the current edition and the edition named by the supplier, regulator or machine manual rather than relying on an older guide’s number.
What the general guidance says about B5 and B20
DOE guidance indicates that OEMs generally approve B5. AFDC material also notes that many engines can use B20 without modification, but it still directs users to consult the engine maker’s warranty. That is a useful starting point, not a substitute for your machine’s documentation.
For a B20 decision, all of the following must line up:
- The manual or warranty explicitly allows B20 or a range that includes it.
- The fuel is correctly labeled and meets the applicable quality standard, normally ASTM D7467 for B6–B20 in the DOE guidance.
- The operating temperature, storage period and maintenance instructions are within the maker’s limits.
- The approval applies to your engine version and market.
If any item is missing, treat the blend as unconfirmed and obtain an OEM answer.

Account for temperature, storage and duty cycle
Cold weather
Higher biodiesel blends can gel in cold temperatures. Gelled fuel can restrict flow and contribute to filter problems. The temperature limit is engine- and blend-specific; do not copy a number from another vehicle.
For example, the 2018 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax Diesel Supplement recommends avoiding biodiesel blends above B5 below 0°C (32°F), citing possible fuel-filter plugging, gelling and freezing. That recommendation applies to the vehicles and market covered by that supplement; it is not a universal 0°C rule for all diesel equipment.
Long storage and infrequent use
DOE guidance identifies storage issues with high blends. If a generator, seasonal tractor, boat or backup vehicle may sit for weeks or months, check the manual for maximum storage time, fuel-turnover, inspection and maintenance instructions. A blend approved for daily driving may have different requirements for a machine that is rarely operated.
Load and application
Equipment that runs continuously at high load, operates remotely or is difficult to service deserves stricter planning than a frequently driven vehicle. Confirm the maker’s requirements for filters, fuel-water separators and service intervals rather than assuming that a lower blend’s maintenance schedule applies unchanged to a higher blend.
Compare fuel choices on the criteria that matter
When two fuels are available, compare them against the same machine-specific criteria instead of choosing the higher percentage automatically.

A higher blend is not automatically better, cleaner, cheaper or safer for your application. The acceptable choice is the one that satisfies the machine’s approval, fuel-quality and operating-condition requirements.
Use the manufacturer example correctly
The 2018 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax supplement is a concrete illustration of why model-specific instructions matter. It cautions against blends above B20 in the covered vehicles and recommends avoiding blends above B5 below 0°C (32°F). It also describes U.S. pump labeling for blends above B5 and the need for those blends to meet ASTM D7467.
Its wording is precise: “At temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), it is recommended to avoid using biodiesel blends above 5% blend.” Treat that as a rule for the vehicles and edition covered by that supplement, not as evidence that every diesel engine has the same ceiling or temperature threshold.

Use two columns in your notes: fuel specification and equipment approval. ASTM D975 or D7467 can show that a batch is formulated and tested as the relevant diesel or biodiesel blend. Only the engine maker’s documentation and warranty establish that your unit may use it.

Do not confuse station or tank rules with vehicle approval
Fuel-storage infrastructure has its own regulatory requirements. DOE’s U.S. codes information describes compatibility demonstrations and 30-day advance notification for certain underground storage systems holding blends above B20. Those obligations concern tanks and dispensing infrastructure; they do not tell you what blend your engine warranty permits.
Conversely, an approved vehicle blend does not remove the station operator’s obligation to comply with storage, labeling and environmental rules. Confirm both sides independently when you manage a tank or fueling site.
What to ask a manufacturer or dealer
Send a concise request that removes ambiguity:
- “Is [exact blend percentage] approved for [make, model, year, engine and serial range] in [country/market]?”
- “Which fuel specification and labeling must the supplier meet?”
- “Does approval change below a stated temperature or during storage longer than a specified period?”
- “Are there filter, water-separator, service-interval or emissions-system requirements?”
- “Will using this blend affect the engine or vehicle warranty?”
Keep the response, the fuel label and the purchase record. If the answer applies only to a particular engine family, do not extend it to another model that happens to use the same vehicle or equipment brand.
If the documents are unclear or the wrong blend is offered
Pause before refueling. A lower percentage is not automatically approved, and a fuel that worked in another machine is not evidence for yours. Contact the maker or dealer with the exact details above. If fuel has already been delivered but the machine has not been operated, do not assume that starting it is harmless; obtain model-specific instructions before use. The correct response can depend on the amount, blend, engine and local service guidance, so avoid improvising a draining or dilution procedure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using “diesel” as approval. The base fuel name does not state the biodiesel percentage.
- Assuming B20 is universal. AFDC’s statement that many engines use B20 without modification is not a warranty approval for every engine.
- Treating ASTM compliance as permission. Fuel quality and OEM compatibility are different decisions.
- Copying another maker’s temperature limit. The 0°C example belongs to a specific Duramax supplement.
- Ignoring the market. Labels, standards and warranty language can differ by country.
- Overlooking storage. Seasonal or backup equipment may face restrictions that daily-use vehicles do not.
- Relying on an old document. Standards and manuals are revised; verify the current applicable edition.
- Assuming B100 is ordinary diesel. DOE identifies special handling and possible equipment modifications for neat biodiesel.
A printable compatibility record
Complete this record before each new blend or machine:

The practical decision
Use B5 only when it is identified and permitted for your machine; treat B6–B20 as requiring explicit OEM and warranty confirmation; and do not use blends above B20 or B100 without documentation covering the specific engine, handling and equipment requirements. Fuel standards, climate, storage and market labeling all matter, but none replaces the exact maker’s approval. When the manual does not settle the question, waiting for the manufacturer or dealer is the safest step.
