Use UIDAI’s official “Verify Aadhaar Number” service. Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number only on UIDAI’s website and follow the result shown there. If the result says the number is inactive, or does not explain the status clearly, contact UIDAI at 1947, through its official email channel, or via a UIDAI Regional Office. UIDAI’s public service information does not establish that an online result identifies death as the reason for deactivation, so support is the definitive route for an explanation.
A downloaded Aadhaar PDF, a printed letter, or a PVC card is not proof that the underlying number remains active. Those documents can continue to exist after a status change; the current UIDAI verification response is what matters.
What you can actually confirm online
UIDAI provides a public Aadhaar-number verification service. It is designed to tell you whether the number presented for checking is currently valid or inactive. It is not documented as a public death-status lookup, and the available service guidance does not promise a special “deceased” label.

That distinction matters. An inactive result confirms a status problem or deactivation, but it does not, by itself, prove that UIDAI deactivated the number because a death was reported. UIDAI’s support channels can explain the reason and tell you what documentation or action is required.

Do not infer current status from any of the following:
- An Aadhaar card issued during the person’s lifetime.
- A photocopy, scanned image, or downloaded e-Aadhaar file.
- A previous successful identity-verification transaction.
- The fact that the number has not been used recently.
These are records or historical events. Only the current response from UIDAI’s verification service, followed by UIDAI support when necessary, answers the status question.
Check the number through UIDAI’s Verify Aadhaar service
- Open UIDAI’s official website. Navigate to the service labelled Verify Aadhaar Number (also described in UIDAI material as Aadhaar-number verification).
- Enter the deceased person’s Aadhaar number in the official form. Avoid search-engine advertisements, unofficial portals, mobile apps of uncertain origin, or any site that asks for unnecessary copies of identity documents.
- Submit the verification request using the controls displayed by UIDAI. The exact screen wording and security checks can change as the portal is updated.
- Record the result and date. Save a screenshot or printout only if you need a case record, and redact the Aadhaar number before sharing it with anyone who does not need it.
- Escalate an unclear result. If the response says inactive, gives an error, or does not make the status understandable, use UIDAI’s 1947 helpline, official email channel, or a Regional Office.
UIDAI’s public guidance does not state that this service reveals why a number is inactive. Treat the verification response as a status indication, not as a death-report certificate or a complete case history.

If the death has not been reported to UIDAI
When the death has not yet been reported, an authenticated family member can use UIDAI’s Reporting of Death of a Family Member service in myAadhaar, where that service is available for the relevant death-registration jurisdiction.
Obtain the death certificate first
The report requires a death certificate issued by the authority that registered the death. The reporting family member should have the certificate and its Death Registration Number available before starting the online process.
Submit the report through myAadhaar
The authenticated family member provides the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and the demographic details requested by the portal. UIDAI validates the submission against the available death-registration and Aadhaar records before taking any deactivation action.
Submitting the form is not confirmation that the Aadhaar number has already been deactivated. Wait for processing, then verify the number through UIDAI’s official verification service or ask UIDAI for the case status.
Check whether the service covers the registration jurisdiction
Coverage has changed over time. UIDAI announced the family death-reporting service on 9 June 2025 and said deaths registered in 24 states and union territories were covered at launch. An official update dated 26 November 2025 said coverage had reached 25 states and union territories, with integration elsewhere under way.
Those figures are dated snapshots, not a current list of every participating jurisdiction. The available material does not provide a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction list as of 13 October 2026. Check the live myAadhaar portal or ask UIDAI before assuming that a particular state or union territory is integrated.

If the portal does not accept the jurisdiction
Do not repeatedly submit altered details or use an unofficial intermediary. Contact UIDAI for instructions and, if necessary, contact the authority that registered the death. UIDAI can tell you whether the jurisdiction is supported and what alternate route applies while integration is pending.
Information to have ready before contacting UIDAI
Support can handle the case more efficiently when your records are consistent. Keep the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, the death certificate, the Death Registration Number, and the demographic details entered in myAadhaar together. Note the date and time of every verification attempt, the exact wording of the response, and any acknowledgement or reference number generated by the portal.
Only provide information requested by an authenticated UIDAI channel. A support representative may need to establish that you are an authorised family reporter, but do not assume that every caller, email address, or intermediary asking for a full Aadhaar number is genuine. If an office asks for documents, confirm the office’s address and submission method through UIDAI’s official website or 1947 first.
How UIDAI validates a death report
UIDAI says it checks reported death details against the death registrar’s database and the Aadhaar database. The family member’s authenticated submission therefore starts a validation process; it is not an automatic switch that instantly changes the Aadhaar status.
The practical sequence is:
- The family member authenticates and submits the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and requested demographic information.
- UIDAI checks the information against the relevant death-registration data and its Aadhaar records.
- If the information is validated, UIDAI takes the further action required for deactivation.
- The family member can then use the verification service to check the resulting status and contact UIDAI if the outcome is missing or unclear.
Processing time, portal wording, and the documents requested can change. The live instructions on myAadhaar and UIDAI’s support response take precedence over older screenshots or third-party explanations.
Contact UIDAI when the reason matters
Use UIDAI support rather than trying to interpret an inactive result as proof of a death-related deactivation. The official FAQ directs people who see a deactivated status to contact UIDAI to learn the reason.

- In person: Contact a UIDAI Regional or State Office when the matter requires case handling or document review.
When contacting support, state that you are asking about a deceased family member’s Aadhaar and provide only the information UIDAI requests. Keep the death certificate and Death Registration Number available, but do not send copies to an unverified address. Ask the representative to distinguish between an inactive status, a pending death-report validation, and any other reason for deactivation.
What if a living person was marked as deceased?
UIDAI’s circular provides a reactivation-request route for a living Aadhaar holder who was wrongly treated as deceased. The request is handled through a UIDAI Regional or State Office.
The office may call the living holder for full biometric submission at a designated Aadhaar centre. That requirement is a safeguard for correcting a serious identity-status error; it is different from the family member’s online death-reporting process.

If you are helping someone who is alive and affected, do not file a death report to “test” the system. Ask UIDAI for the reactivation procedure and follow the office’s identity and biometric instructions.

An Aadhaar number is sensitive personal information, even after the holder’s death. Use the following controls while checking or reporting:
- Type the number only into a UIDAI page reached through the official UIDAI website.
- Do not post the full number, death certificate, or Death Registration Number on social media or public forums.
- Redact most digits before sending a screenshot to an adviser, bank, insurer, or other organisation that does not need the complete number.
- Verify that an email address or office contact belongs to UIDAI before sending documents.
- Be suspicious of anyone promising an instant “deceased” label, paid activation, or a downloadable status certificate that UIDAI does not identify as an official service.
A third-party card reader, biometric device, printed manual, or replacement card cannot establish the current UIDAI status. The authoritative paths are UIDAI’s verification service and UIDAI support.
Why an Aadhaar card can be misleading
Physical and digital Aadhaar documents are snapshots of an identity credential. They are not a live indicator that the number remains active. A family may legitimately possess a card after the holder’s death, while UIDAI’s records have since been updated.
Conversely, retaining a card does not show that a death report was processed. The only defensible conclusions come from a dated verification result and, where the reason is material, UIDAI’s explanation.
UIDAI’s published deactivation totals
UIDAI and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology have published nationwide totals that provide context, but they cannot answer an individual family’s status question.

In its 26 November 2025 government release, UIDAI/MeitY stated: No Aadhaar number is ever re-assigned to another individual.
That assurance concerns reassignment; it does not replace the verification and support steps for checking a deceased relative’s status.
What the nationwide figures do—and do not—tell you
The totals are useful for understanding the scale of UIDAI’s death-linked deactivation work, not for proving an individual case. More than 2 crore numbers had been deactivated by 26 November 2025, and the reported total exceeded 2.5 crore on 4 February 2026. Neither announcement supplies a searchable list of names or Aadhaar numbers, a reason code for each record, or a substitute for the Verify Aadhaar service.
The statement that no Aadhaar number is ever re-assigned to another individual addresses a separate concern. If a relative’s number is inactive, it does not mean the number has been issued to someone else. You still need UIDAI to explain whether the status arose from a validated death report or another administrative process.

Troubleshooting common problems
The result says “inactive,” but you need proof of the reason
Use the result as evidence of the status shown on that date, then contact UIDAI. Ask specifically whether the deactivation was connected to a validated death report or another administrative reason. The public verification service is not documented as displaying that explanation.
The family report was submitted, but the number still verifies as valid
Submission starts validation; it does not confirm completion. Check that the Death Registration Number and demographic details matched the certificate and portal request, then ask UIDAI whether the report is pending, rejected, or processed.
The death-reporting option is missing
The service may not yet cover the jurisdiction where the death was registered, or the portal may be temporarily unavailable. Confirm the live service availability and contact UIDAI rather than guessing from the 2025 coverage announcements.
You cannot authenticate as the reporting family member
Do not use another person’s credentials or submit altered information. Contact UIDAI for an authorised alternative and ask the death-registering authority whether its record contains the required details.

Use the reactivation route through a UIDAI Regional or State Office. Be prepared for a request to complete full biometrics at a designated Aadhaar centre.
The portal and helpline give different information
Record the date, time, response wording, and any case number from each channel. Tell UIDAI that the verification result and support response appear inconsistent and ask which status is current. Do not submit duplicate death reports with changed spellings or numbers while the discrepancy is being reviewed.
You need to show a bank, insurer, or pension office that you checked
Ask the organisation what evidence it accepts. A dated screenshot or printout of the UIDAI response may document the status shown at that time, but it may not prove the reason for deactivation. If the organisation needs confirmation of a death-related status, request guidance or a written response through UIDAI’s official support route.

- Save the dated result without exposing the full Aadhaar number unnecessarily.
- If the result is inactive or unclear, contact UIDAI at 1947, by official email, or through a Regional Office for the reason.
- If no death report has been filed, obtain the death certificate and use the myAadhaar family death-reporting service when the jurisdiction is supported.
- After UIDAI processes the report, verify the number again and retain the support reference or office correspondence.
This sequence separates three issues that are often confused: whether the number currently verifies, why UIDAI has assigned that status, and whether a family death report has been submitted and validated.

Does an inactive result prove that the person’s death was reported?
No. An inactive result establishes only that the number was not treated as active by the verification service at the time of checking. UIDAI support must explain whether a validated death report caused the change or whether another administrative reason applies.
Is there a fee to verify the Aadhaar number or report a death?
The official instructions identify UIDAI’s Verify Aadhaar service, the myAadhaar death-reporting service, and the 1947 helpline as the relevant channels; they do not identify a product purchase or third-party payment as necessary. What if my state or union territory is not listed in myAadhaar?
Do not assume that older coverage figures are current. The service covered 24 states and union territories at its 9 June 2025 launch and 25 according to a 26 November 2025 update, with integration elsewhere under way. Check the live portal or ask UIDAI about the jurisdiction and any alternate route.
