Do not infer freeze risk from a token’s name, ticker, logo, or marketing. Check the exact mint or contract address on the correct chain, identify every authority that can stop transfers or withdrawals, and inspect upgrade and governance controls. On Solana, this starts with the mint’s freeze authority and Token-2022 extensions. On EVM chains, it requires reading the verified token code, access-control roles, proxy implementation, and transfer restrictions. A vault needs all of those checks plus its own pause controls, strategies, and underlying assets.
“Frozen” is not one technical condition. An issuer might freeze one holder’s account, pause every transfer, blacklist a specific address, seize assets, or upgrade the contract into code with new powers. The workflow below separates those cases so you can make an address-specific, time-stamped decision before buying, depositing, or relying on an asset.
What “frozen” can mean
Use a precise description instead of a single safe/unsafe label. Different mechanisms have different scope, reversibility, and operators.

A token can have no current account-freeze authority yet still be pausable, blacklistable, or upgradeable. Conversely, a visible authority may be limited by a multisig or governance process without being absent.

Begin with the exact chain and address
Obtain the mint or contract address from a trusted project channel, then independently confirm the network. Tickers and symbols are not unique, and search results can lead to a look-alike asset. Record the address exactly as displayed by the project and explorer, including capitalization where the chain uses it.
For a vault, record the vault address and every material underlying token address. Include wrapped assets, receipt tokens, strategy contracts, lending pools, bridges, and other external components that can affect redemption. A clean result for one token does not establish that the vault’s entire withdrawal path is unrestricted.
Write down the explorer URL, chain, and review time or block number before you inspect permissions. Authorities and implementations can change, so this record defines what your conclusion actually covers.
Checking Solana tokens
Identify the token program
Open the mint account in a trusted Solana explorer or an RPC-capable inspection tool. Confirm whether the mint is owned by the original Token Program or by Token-2022. The program owner determines which fields and extensions you must evaluate.
Inspect the standard freeze authority
For a mint using the standard Token Program, inspect the freeze authority. If it contains an address, that authority can freeze individual holder token accounts. A frozen account keeps its owner, mint, and balance, but cannot receive, transfer, or burn tokens until an authorized thaw occurs. Solana’s documentation states: “Only a mint that still has a freeze authority can freeze token accounts.” See Solana’s Freeze Account documentation.
If the field is None or otherwise revoked, the standard freeze mechanism can no longer be used for accounts of that mint. Treat that as a statement about this mechanism only; it does not rule out Token-2022 extensions, custom programs, a separate wrapper token, or a vault-level pause.

Check Token-2022 extensions
Token-2022 mints can carry extension-specific authorities. Enumerate the complete extension list and inspect each authority rather than stopping after the base mint fields. Solana’s Set Authority documentation describes authority roles and revocation, while the Pausable Mint documentation explains the PausableConfig extension.
With PausableConfig, the designated authority can pause or resume the whole mint. While paused, the program rejects transfers, minting, and burning. This is broader than freezing one account. Therefore, “freeze authority revoked” is not proof that every Token-2022 control is gone.
Keep mint authority separate
Do not combine the freeze and mint fields into one conclusion. Mint authority controls creation of additional units; freeze authority controls account freezing. Revoking one does not revoke the other. The same Solana authority reference explains how each role is changed and how setting an authority to None permanently removes that role through the standard mechanism.
What a Solana finding should say
- Program: original Token Program or Token-2022.
- Freeze authority: address, multisig, program-derived account, or
None. - Mint authority: separate current value and controller.
- Extensions: every extension and its authority, including
PausableConfigif present. - Scope: individual accounts, whole mint, or another program involved in transfers.
- Time: slot, block, or UTC timestamp of the inspection.
Checking EVM tokens
Do not treat ERC-20 as a no-freeze guarantee
ERC-20 defines an interface for balances, allowances, transfers, and related operations. It does not require an implementation to be free of administrator-controlled restrictions. A project can add an owner-only freeze function, a frozen-address mapping, transfer checks, or compliance modules. An educational example on ethereum.org’s ERC-20 with Safety Rails tutorial shows how owner-gated freezing can be implemented in custom code.
Use the correct chain explorer
Open the address on the explorer for the network where you will transact. Confirm that the displayed contract is verified and that the bytecode, compiler settings, and linked libraries correspond to the deployed address. Verification helps you read published source that matches deployed bytecode; it is not a safety certification, and an audit badge or explorer label does not prove that privileged behavior is harmless.
Search code and access control together
Read both the functions that impose restrictions and the code paths that enforce them during transfers. Search for names such as pause, unpause, freeze, blacklist, blocklist, seize, forcedTransfer, mint, and role or owner updates. Then inspect transfer hooks, internal checks, and modifiers: a function with an innocent name can still write a mapping that causes transfers to revert, while a restriction may be implemented without an obvious “freeze” function.

For each relevant control, answer four questions:
- What state variable or condition blocks, redirects, burns, or seizes a balance?
- Which account or role can change that state?
- Can the role be renounced, replaced, or recovered by another administrator?
- Does the restriction affect one address, selected addresses, all transfers, minting, burning, or approvals?
Inspect current role holders and ownership in the explorer’s readable state or through contract calls. A role held by an externally owned account, multisig, DAO, timelock, or another contract has different operational consequences, but each remains a potential control path until its permissions are demonstrably removed.
Review proxies and upgrade powers
An upgradeable token or vault may present one user-facing address while delegating execution to a separate implementation. OpenZeppelin explains that, with this pattern, “the contract that the user interacts with will be just a proxy, and the actual logic will be in the implementation contract.” See OpenZeppelin’s upgrading smart contracts guide.
Find the current implementation
Determine whether the address is a transparent proxy, UUPS deployment, beacon proxy, diamond, or another upgrade pattern. Read the implementation address stored by the proxy at the time of review. If a beacon is involved, identify the beacon and its administrator as well as the implementation it currently returns.
Identify who can upgrade
Inspect the actual authorization path: a single admin, multisig, timelock, governance contract, or a combination. A multisig changes how many signers must approve an action; a timelock changes how quickly an approved upgrade can execute. Neither means that upgrade power is absent. Check signer thresholds, delay duration, proposer and executor roles, cancellation rights, and whether an emergency role can bypass the normal path.
Verify both source layers
Do not stop at a verified proxy. OpenZeppelin’s Preparing for Mainnet documentation distinguishes the proxy from its implementation and notes that explorer support for upgradeable deployments differs. Verify the implementation source and inspect its access control, then confirm that the implementation address has not changed since your review block. Also inspect upgrade events or governance proposals when available.
An upgrade authority can replace logic while preserving the proxy’s address, storage, and balances. Your conclusion should therefore state who can change the code and how much notice or coordination that process requires.

Audit a vault as a chain of controls
A vault is not safe merely because one deposited token has no visible freeze authority. Trace the entire route from a user’s shares to the assets that must be sold, transferred, or withdrawn.

| Proxy and governance | Is the vault upgradeable? What implementation is active, who authorizes upgrades, and are there multisig or timelock constraints? |
| Underlying tokens | Can each asset be frozen, paused, blacklisted, seized, or upgraded by its issuer? |
| Strategies and venues | Can a lending market, bridge, exchange adapter, or external strategy pause transfers or withdrawals, or become insolvent? |
| Accounting and exits | Does the vault require a particular token transfer, oracle, bridge message, or settlement call before a user can redeem? |
The strongest applicable restriction anywhere in this path determines the practical withdrawal risk. This is a control-path assessment, not a claim that every vault uses each listed component.
A repeatable pre-use review procedure
- Collect addresses. Record the chain, vault or token address, underlying assets, wrapped versions, and strategy contracts from trusted project documentation.
- Set the review point. Note the explorer, block or slot, and UTC time. Save the implementation address and visible role holders.
- Classify the token standard. On Solana, identify the owning token program. On EVM, determine whether the contract is a direct implementation, proxy, or another modular design.
- List every stop mechanism. Include account freeze, global pause, blacklist, transfer hook, seizure, forced transfer, withdrawal pause, cooldown, queue, and emergency mode.
- Map each authority. Record the exact address or contract that can invoke each mechanism, its signer threshold or governance process, and whether the power can be revoked.
- Inspect current state. Read freeze and pause flags, blacklists, role memberships, owner values, proxy implementation slots, beacon values, and vault withdrawal settings.
- Trace a normal exit. Follow the calls required to transfer, redeem, bridge, lend, or sell the asset. A restriction in any required call can block the final withdrawal.
- Check upgradeability again. Confirm that the implementation and upgrade administrator you recorded belong to the exact address you plan to use, not a similarly named deployment.
- Write a bounded conclusion. State what can be frozen, by whom, how it can be resumed, and what you could not verify. Use “no current authority observed at block X” rather than “cannot ever be frozen.”
How to compare two tokens or vaults
Use the same axes for every candidate so a polished interface does not hide a stronger administrator.

Do not convert these dimensions into an invented market-wide percentage. The available documentation does not establish how many tokens are freezeable, and a 2021 discussion of administrated ERC-20 mechanisms is not a current prevalence estimate; see the arXiv paper on administrated ERC-20 tokens for background on governance and key risks.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Relying on the ticker or a search result
Problem: Multiple assets can share a symbol, and a search result may point to a counterfeit contract.
Correction: Start from a trusted project source, verify the chain, and compare the complete address in the explorer.

Assuming ERC-20 means unrestricted transfers
Problem: ERC-20 permits custom owner, role, blacklist, pause, and seizure logic.
Correction: Read verified source, transfer hooks, modifiers, state variables, and current role holders.
Reading only the proxy page
Problem: The user-facing proxy may contain little or none of the token’s operational logic.
Correction: Resolve the current implementation or beacon, verify its source, and inspect the upgrade authorization path.
Treating a multisig or timelock as no control
Problem: Extra signers or a delay reduce unilateral speed but do not eliminate the ability to pause, freeze, or upgrade.
Correction: Record signer thresholds, delay, emergency bypasses, and the identities or governance rules involved.

Calling a point-in-time result permanent
Problem: Authorities, role members, implementations, and governance decisions can change after your inspection.
Correction: Include the block or timestamp and schedule a fresh review before a large deposit or after a contract upgrade.
Record limitations and make the decision explicit
Your final note should distinguish observed facts from unknowns. A useful record includes the chain, every address checked, token program or contract type, current authorities, implementation and upgrade administrator, relevant pause or blacklist state, external dependencies, and the block or UTC time.
Use bounded language such as “the standard Solana freeze authority was None at slot 250000000” or “a role-controlled blacklist function is present and the role is held by a multisig.” Do not write “guaranteed safe.” Even a thorough contract review cannot rule out a chain-level intervention, a newly deployed implementation, an undiscovered code path, a compromised key, or a dependency failure outside the inspected contracts.
A hardware wallet can protect private keys, but it cannot remove an issuer’s freeze authority or a protocol’s pause and upgrade powers. The relevant protection is address-specific inspection of the controls that govern the asset you intend to use.

Proceed only after you can answer, in writing: what can be stopped, which authority can stop it, whether the action can be reversed, how the code can change, and which external component could still block your exit. If any answer is unknown, treat that unknown as an unresolved control rather than as evidence that no freeze mechanism exists.
