Symptoms such as sudden slowness, crashes, browser redirects, changed settings, disabled security tools, or persistent pop-ups justify a malware check, but none proves an infection. The same behavior can come from ordinary software faults or failing hardware. Verify the cause with the built-in security steps for your operating system: on Windows, update protection definitions and run a Full scan in Windows Security; on a Mac, update or restart macOS and inspect unfamiliar applications and Safari extensions when persistent pop-ups suggest adware.

What counts as a warning sign—and what does not

Malware rarely announces itself clearly. A computer may simply behave differently, which is why checking matters more than trying to diagnose the cause from one symptom. Microsoft identifies unusual slowness, frequent crashes or freezes, inability to start a virus scanner or other system tools, inability to open security-related webpages, an unexpectedly changed browser homepage, and constant unexpected pop-ups as possible signs of malware.

Microsoft also lists sudden performance loss, shorter battery life, increased data use, unexpected advertising, and redirects to unrelated websites as clues. These observations are useful for deciding when to investigate, not for declaring that the computer is infected. Microsoft explicitly notes that the same problems may result from hardware or software issues unrelated to malware.

Use a pattern of symptoms, not a single symptom

  • One slow day: A busy update, low free storage, a failing drive, or a resource-heavy application can look like malware.
  • Repeated or escalating changes: Slowness combined with redirects, unfamiliar pop-ups, or security tools that will not open is a stronger reason to scan promptly.
  • A security warning you did not expect: Treat it as untrusted until you verify it in the operating system’s own security app. Do not use a web page’s claim that your computer is infected as proof.

The practical question is therefore not “Does this symptom prove malware?” but “What check should I perform next, and what should I do if that check finds something?”

Before you start: protect your information and avoid fake alerts

Save important work before running a scan that may slow the computer. If you see a suspicious pop-up, do not click its links, telephone numbers, download buttons, or even a deceptive “close” control. Apple warns that some pop-ups imitate trusted companies and try to obtain personal or financial information. Close the browser window or tab using the operating system’s normal controls instead of interacting with the message.

Do not install an alleged cleaner solely because a pop-up says you must. The workflow below uses the security features already supplied with Windows or macOS. If you are handling a work-managed computer, follow your organization’s security procedure as well; a managed device may have policies that change which actions you can take.

Windows: run the built-in malware checks

Windows Security provides three useful levels of investigation: a Quick scan, a Full scan, and Microsoft Defender Offline. They answer different questions. A Quick scan concentrates on places malware is most likely to hide. A Full scan examines the PC more broadly and is Microsoft’s recommended choice when you think the computer is infected. Defender Offline runs outside the normal Windows environment for threats that persist or hide while Windows is running.

1. Open Windows Security

  1. Open the Windows Security app.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.

If Windows Security or security-related webpages will not open, that inability is itself a warning sign identified by Microsoft. Do not assume that a blocked security tool confirms malware, because software problems can cause the same symptom; continue with the recovery or troubleshooting process available for your Windows installation or organization.

2. Update protection definitions before scanning

In the Virus & threat protection area, update the security intelligence or protection definitions before starting the scan. Microsoft says current definitions improve detection. An out-of-date definition set can reduce what the scanner recognizes, so updating is a meaningful part of the check rather than an optional cosmetic step.

3. Choose the right scan

Scan What it checks When to use it Effect on the computer Restart or offline mode
Quick scan Locations where malware is most likely to hide A fast first check when you need an initial indication Generally less disruptive than a full scan, although the exact time varies No offline restart is required
Full scan The PC more broadly When you suspect the computer is infected; this is Microsoft’s recommended scan for that situation It can take considerably longer and may slow the computer while it runs No offline restart is required
Microsoft Defender Offline Threats that may hide or persist while Windows is running When malware returns after removal or a normal scan cannot deal with the suspected threat Windows is unavailable during the offline check The computer restarts and the scan runs outside Windows

A Quick scan is not a conclusive “clean bill of health.” It is targeted by design. If your concern is substantial, select the scan options in Windows Security and run Full scan rather than treating a Quick scan as the final answer.

4. Run a Full scan when infection is suspected

  1. From Virus & threat protection, open the scan options.
  2. Choose Full scan.
  3. Start the scan and let it complete. Plan to leave the computer available; Microsoft notes that a Full scan may slow it while it examines the PC.
  4. Review the result in Windows Security when the scan finishes.

A clean result lowers concern, but it does not establish that every possible infection is absent. If the symptoms continue, the same malware returns, or Windows behaves as though a threat is still active, move to the offline check and Microsoft’s applicable troubleshooting guidance rather than repeating the same limited scan indefinitely.

5. Handle a detection carefully

When Windows Security identifies a threat, follow its options to clean, remove, or quarantine the item. Do not allow a file merely because you recognize its name or because an application stops working after detection. Microsoft says to allow a file only when you trust both the file and its publisher; allowing it prevents further alerts for that file. If you cannot establish that trust, leave the item handled by Windows Security and investigate the affected application through a known-good source.

6. Use Microsoft Defender Offline for persistent threats

Defender Offline is the escalation step when malware may be hiding while Windows is active or keeps coming back after a normal scan. It runs outside Windows and restarts the computer. Save open documents, close applications, and make sure you can tolerate the restart before selecting it. After Windows starts again, return to Windows Security and review the available protection history and current status.

Windows scan choices at a glance

The following decision path keeps the checks proportionate without mistaking a fast result for certainty:

  1. Minor, isolated concern: Update protection definitions and run a Quick scan as an initial check.
  2. You believe the PC is infected: Run a Full scan, because it examines the computer more broadly and is Microsoft’s recommended option in that circumstance.
  3. Threat persists, returns, or seems hidden: Save your work and run Microsoft Defender Offline, which restarts the PC and scans outside Windows.
  4. Symptoms remain after these checks: Treat the result as unresolved. The symptoms may have a non-malware cause, or additional troubleshooting may be needed; do not claim certainty from one clean scan.

Mac: investigate persistent pop-ups and unwanted software

Apple’s guidance is particularly relevant when a Mac repeatedly displays pop-ups that resemble security warnings, advertisements, or requests for personal or financial information. Persistent pop-ups can indicate adware or other unwanted software, but a pop-up alone does not prove that the Mac is infected. Deceptive messages may simply be phishing attempts delivered through a webpage.

1. Do not interact with suspicious pop-ups

Do not click a suspicious message’s links, download controls, phone numbers, or fake close buttons. A message that uses a familiar logo or urgent language can still be deceptive. Use normal browser or macOS controls to leave the page, then continue with the checks below.

2. Update macOS

Install available macOS updates using Apple’s normal software-update mechanism. Updating is Apple’s first supported check for this type of problem and also ensures the operating system has current security fixes and malware-removal components.

3. Restart if the Mac is already current

If macOS is already up to date, restart the Mac. Apple states that macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when the Mac restarts. This is a specific Apple statement about known malware removal during restart, not a guarantee that every unwanted program or every possible infection will be found.

4. Inspect Applications for software you do not recognize

Open the Applications folder and look for applications you did not intentionally install or no longer need. An unfamiliar name is a reason to investigate, not proof of maliciousness: legitimate software can be installed by another user, an employer, or a bundled installer. Remove an application only when you are confident it is unwanted and you understand what depends on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Review Safari extensions

Open Safari’s extension settings and review the installed extensions. Disable or uninstall extensions you do not need or do not recognize. Extensions can alter pages, searches, and redirects, so this check is useful when the browser behaves differently even though the operating system itself appears normal.

Apple’s steps are aimed at suspected adware or unwanted software associated with persistent pop-ups. They are not a universal manual scan procedure for every Mac configuration, and Apple does not say that every pop-up means malware.

How to interpret the result

A threat is detected

Use the operating system’s remove, clean, or quarantine action. Record the name of the detected item if you need to investigate a related application or report the incident. On Windows, allow an item only when you trust the file and its publisher; otherwise, do not override the protection decision.

The scan is clean but symptoms continue

A clean scan reduces concern but is not proof that all malware is absent. Recheck that Windows protection definitions were current, use a Full scan if you initially used Quick scan, and use Defender Offline if the behavior suggests a threat that persists while Windows is running. On a Mac, finish Apple’s update or restart step and inspect unfamiliar applications and Safari extensions when pop-ups continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the same time, keep the alternative explanations in view. Hardware faults, ordinary software conflicts, browser settings, and resource-heavy programs can all produce slowness, freezes, battery loss, or crashes. A continuing symptom after a clean, appropriately chosen scan is a reason to troubleshoot the symptom itself rather than to label the computer infected without evidence.

The computer cannot open security tools

Inability to start a virus scanner or access security-related webpages is one of Microsoft’s listed warning signs, but it can also result from a damaged installation or another software problem. Avoid downloading a replacement tool from a pop-up. If the computer is managed, contact the administrator; otherwise use Microsoft’s supported recovery and troubleshooting options for the Windows installation.

Common mistakes that make a malware check less useful

  • Calling a symptom a diagnosis: Slowness or advertising is evidence to investigate, not proof of infection.
  • Stopping at a Quick scan: Its scope is targeted. When infection is suspected, Microsoft recommends a Full scan.
  • Ignoring definition updates: Windows protection should be updated before scanning so detection uses current security intelligence.
  • Clicking the warning to “fix” the computer: A deceptive pop-up may be phishing and can solicit personal or financial information.
  • Allowing a detected file automatically: Windows says to allow it only when you trust the file and its publisher.
  • Running Defender Offline without saving work: The check restarts the computer and runs outside Windows.
  • Installing a Mac cleaner because an ad demands it: Apple’s supported response is to update or restart macOS and inspect applications and Safari extensions; a web advertisement is not an authority.
  • Assuming a clean result explains every performance problem: Hardware and unrelated software issues remain possible.

A compact checklist

Windows

  • Note the actual symptoms and when they began.
  • Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
  • Update security intelligence or protection definitions.
  • Run Full scan when you suspect infection; use Quick scan only as a targeted initial check.
  • Clean, remove, or quarantine detections; allow a file only when its file and publisher are trusted.
  • Run Microsoft Defender Offline for threats that persist or may hide while Windows runs, after saving work.

Mac

  • Do not click suspicious pop-ups or fake close buttons.
  • Update macOS.
  • If macOS is current, restart; Apple says the restart includes a tool that removes known malware.
  • Inspect Applications for unfamiliar software.
  • Review Safari extensions and disable or uninstall those you do not need.

What a responsible conclusion looks like

The reliable conclusion is conditional: the computer showed clues worth checking, and the built-in security workflow either found a threat or did not find one. No single symptom establishes malware, and no single clean scan promises that every infection has been ruled out. Use the scan scope and escalation steps that match the evidence, avoid suspicious pop-ups, and continue with ordinary hardware or software troubleshooting when the malware checks do not explain the behavior.
