The safest way to check a phone charger or power bank is to verify five things together: compatibility with your exact phone, the adapter and cable’s supported charging standard, credible safety-compliance information, the physical condition of every part, and the product’s model or serial number against current recall notices. A high wattage printed on a charger does not prove that your phone can safely charge at that speed.
Stop using a charger, cable, or power bank that is damaged, deformed, unusually hot, smells abnormal, sparks, swells, or behaves unpredictably. If an official recall covers the exact unit, follow the recall remedy and disposal instructions rather than continuing to use it.
What makes a charger or power bank safe?
Safety is not determined by a single logo, connector shape, or wattage number. A safe setup is a combination of a suitable phone, adapter, cable, and power bank that has been made and sold by a traceable manufacturer, meets applicable requirements, remains in good condition, and is not covered by a current recall.

Compatibility and safety overlap but are not identical. A charger can fit your phone yet lack the charging mode your phone expects. A cable can look genuine yet have no verifiable certification. A power bank can have an adequate capacity rating yet be unsafe because of a damaged lithium-ion cell or a recalled design.

The five checks
- Phone guidance: identify the exact phone model and read its manufacturer’s charging instructions.
- Electrical and protocol match: compare the adapter’s output ratings and charging standard with the phone and cable.
- Traceability: look for a real manufacturer, contact information, model identification, and credible compliance evidence.
- Condition: inspect the adapter, cable, plugs, ports, and power bank for damage or abnormal behavior.
- Recall status: search the exact model and, when requested, the serial number in regulator and manufacturer notices.
Start with the exact phone model
Find the model name or model number in the phone’s settings, on its original packaging, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Charging requirements can differ between phones that use the same USB-C connector, so do not rely on the connector alone.
Read the manufacturer’s official guidance for supported charging standards, maximum input, approved accessories, and any restrictions on third-party equipment. Apple, for example, says third-party adapters are supported when they comply with applicable country regulations and international or regional safety standards. That is guidance for Apple devices, not a universal certification for every adapter sold for every phone.
Apple Support warns: “Other adapters might not meet applicable safety standards, and charging with such adapters could pose a risk of death or injury.” This statement concerns adapters that do not meet applicable standards; it does not mean every third-party adapter is unsafe.

Can you use any USB-C charger?
No. USB-C describes the connector family, not a guarantee that every charger, cable, and phone combination is suitable. USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a flexible power-delivery specification used by phones and other devices, but the phone, adapter, and cable must still support compatible modes.
Read the adapter label
Record the output voltage, current, wattage, and any named charging protocols printed on the adapter. A label might list several output combinations, such as different voltage-and-current pairs. Those figures describe what the adapter can offer under the relevant protocol; they do not mean the phone will draw the highest number.
The phone and its charging system negotiate an appropriate level when the equipment supports the same standard. If the phone supports less power, it normally charges at the lower supported level. If the adapter lacks the phone’s preferred protocol, charging may be slower or may fall back to a basic mode.
Check the cable as part of the system
The cable is not a disposable detail in a safety check. It carries power between the adapter and phone, and its construction, connectors, and ratings affect both operation and risk. Match the cable’s connector ends to the phone and adapter and choose one rated for the charging mode and power level you intend to use.

UL describes hazards involving powered connectivity, cables, and connectors and its safety-certification work for information-and-communications-technology power cables. A cable’s appearance, packaging, or a seller’s statement alone does not verify that a certification claim is genuine. Where practical, verify a claimed mark or listing with the certifier or the manufacturer.
Do not infer charging speed from wattage alone
A 65-watt or 100-watt label is an adapter capability, not a promise that a phone will charge at 65 or 100 watts. Actual speed depends on the phone’s supported input, the negotiated protocol, the cable, temperature, battery state, and the manufacturer’s limits. Using a higher-capability adapter is not automatically unsafe when it is compliant and negotiates correctly, but the number by itself is not evidence of compatibility or quality.
How to inspect a wall charger, cable, and power bank
Perform the inspection before connecting a questionable product and again whenever it has been dropped, crushed, exposed to liquid, or stored in extreme conditions.
Wall adapter checklist
- Look for cracks, a loose or bent plug, exposed metal, melted plastic, discoloration, scorch marks, or a burnt smell.
- Check that the casing does not separate and that the output port is not loose or contaminated.
- Confirm that the label includes a model or other traceable identification, electrical ratings, and a manufacturer or responsible supplier.
- Do not use an adapter that buzzes, sparks repeatedly, cuts in and out, or becomes abnormally hot during ordinary charging.
Cable checklist
- Inspect both connectors for bent contacts, corrosion, looseness, or debris.
- Replace a cable with split insulation, crushed sections, exposed shielding, or intermittent charging.
- Do not assume a thick-looking or expensive cable has been certified; verify the claim when it matters.
- Keep connectors dry and avoid sharply bending the cable at either plug.
Power-bank checklist
- Do not use a bank that is swollen, bulging, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, or producing smoke or an unusual odor.
- Stop if the unit repeatedly shuts down, refuses to charge, rapidly loses capacity, or becomes hot without a clear reason.
- Check the casing, charging port, cable, indicator lights, and printed model information.
- Do not open a lithium-ion power bank or attempt a cell repair yourself.
Overheating and ignition hazards have been documented in official recalls. A warm surface during heavy use is not automatically proof of a defect, but abnormal heat, a rapid temperature rise, or heat combined with swelling or smell is a reason to disconnect the device and stop using it.
How to verify safety-compliance claims
Look for a traceable manufacturer and a model-specific compliance statement rather than relying on a generic “safe” or “premium” claim. Applicable requirements vary by country, so the relevant mark, testing scheme, and documentation depend on where the product is sold and used.
What credible evidence looks like
- A complete manufacturer name and contact details, not only a trading alias.
- A permanent model identifier and electrical ratings that match the packaging and instructions.
- Safety or regulatory marks appropriate to the sales region.
- Documentation or a searchable certification record that identifies the same model, when a certifier provides one.
- A manufacturer support or recall page that explains how to identify and remedy affected units.
Do not treat a USB-C logo, USB PD wording, or a familiar-looking certification symbol as a blanket guarantee. USB-IF explains the USB PD specification and USB-C ecosystem; that standards context does not establish that every USB-C charger or cable is safe or compatible. Likewise, UL’s cable-safety information describes its testing and certification work; it does not certify an unnamed cable merely because the cable is sold online.
Check recalls using the exact model and serial number
Search the product’s exact brand, model, and serial number in the current recall database of your national product-safety regulator and on the manufacturer’s recall page. The model text, capacity, color, date code, and serial range may all matter. Photograph the label before it becomes unreadable.

Why product-specific matching matters
A recall applies to the identified model, batch, or serial range described in the notice. It does not automatically condemn every product made by the same company. Compare the notice’s identifiers with the actual label rather than stopping at a brand-name search.
Examples from U.S. CPSC notices
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notices illustrate why exact matching is essential:
| Product or notice | Publication context | Reported scope or detail | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casely power banks | 2026 recall reannouncement; the original notice was in 2025 | About 429,200 units. The 2026 reannouncement reported 28 additional consumer reports since the 2025 announcement, including incidents involving a fatality and an airplane burn injury. | These figures apply to the identified recalled Casely product, not to power banks generally. Match the model and other identifiers before drawing a conclusion. |
| Belkin units | 2025 CPSC notice | About 83,500 units in the United States, plus about 2,385 sold in Canada. | Check the specific model and affected identifiers in the notice and follow its remedy. |
| Anker power banks | 2025 CPSC notice | About 481,000 units. | Do not generalize the notice to every Anker power bank; compare the exact unit with the listed models or serial ranges. |
| Flaunt power-bank notice | CPSC recall notice | The notice identifies particular affected products; a universal market-wide risk rate is not established. | Use the model and serial information in the notice, not the company name alone. |
The CPSC notices are U.S.-specific. If you live elsewhere, check your own national product-safety regulator as well as the manufacturer. Recall status and remedies can change, so verify the information when you buy and again if a product develops a problem.
What to do if your power bank is recalled
- Stop using it. Disconnect it from the phone and charger, and do not keep testing it to see whether it still works.
- Identify the unit. Record the brand, model, serial number, capacity, and purchase information without damaging the product.
- Read the official notice. Confirm that your identifiers are included and note whether the remedy is a refund, replacement, repair, or another instruction.
- Follow the specified handling method. Lithium-ion products may require special transport, storage, or collection instructions.
- Use only the stated disposal route. Do not assume ordinary trash or a general battery drop-off is appropriate for a recalled lithium-ion power bank; follow the notice and local authority guidance.
If a recalled unit is hot, smoking, leaking, or visibly swelling, move people away from it and follow emergency and local hazardous-material guidance. Do not puncture, crush, open, or place it in water.
A practical pre-purchase and pre-use sequence
Use this sequence for a new purchase, a charger borrowed from someone else, or equipment that has been stored for a long time.
- Identify the phone. Write down the exact model and read its official charging guidance.
- Define the required connection. Confirm the connector on the phone, the connector on the adapter, and whether the phone expects USB PD or another named mode.
- Compare ratings. Check the adapter’s voltage/current combinations and the cable’s suitability for the intended power level. Treat the adapter’s maximum wattage as a capability, not a guaranteed phone speed.
- Check traceability. Confirm the manufacturer, model, electrical label, instructions, and any claimed safety certification. Verify a certification listing with the certifier or manufacturer where practical.
- Inspect everything. Examine the adapter, cable, and power bank for cracks, swelling, exposed conductors, corrosion, loose ports, smell, or abnormal heat.
- Search recalls. Use the exact model and serial number in your national regulator’s database and the manufacturer’s recall page.
- Test cautiously. On the first use, remain nearby, keep ventilation around the adapter and power bank, and disconnect if charging becomes erratic or unusually hot.
- Keep records. Save the receipt, product instructions, model, and serial number so a later recall check is quick.
How to compare two chargers or power banks
There is no evidence establishing one universally safest brand or one universal wattage recommendation. Compare products on the factors that can actually be verified for your phone and region.
| Comparison factor | Questions to ask | What counts as a warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Exact compatibility | Does the phone maker list or support the charging mode and connector? | The seller only says “works with all phones” without model-specific information. |
| Output and cable | Do the phone, adapter, and cable support compatible voltage, current, and protocol combinations? | Only a large wattage number is provided, with no output profiles or cable information. |
| Traceability | Is there a real manufacturer, model, documentation, and a way to verify compliance? | Missing model data, copied marks, or no support contact. |
| Physical condition | Are the casing, ports, plugs, and cable intact and cool enough during normal use? | Swelling, cracks, exposed conductors, burning smell, repeated sparks, or unexplained heat. |
| Recall status | Has the exact model or serial range been checked against current notices? | A seller avoids providing identifiers or tells you to ignore a regulator notice. |
Common mistakes that create avoidable risk
Choosing by connector alone
USB-C compatibility is not automatic protocol compatibility. Check the phone’s guidance, the adapter’s output profiles, and the cable.

Assuming more watts is always better
Higher capacity can be useful for some devices, but it does not establish safety, charging speed, or build quality. The phone controls what it accepts within the supported system.
Ignoring the cable
A compliant adapter paired with a damaged or unsuitable cable is not a complete safe setup. Replace cables that are worn or intermittent and verify claims that matter.

Trusting a marketplace listing without identifiers
Before buying, insist on a model number, manufacturer information, ratings, and a return or support path. A generic product photograph is not enough to check a recall.
Continuing to use a hot or swollen bank
Disconnect abnormal equipment and seek the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not puncture, open, or improvise disposal for a lithium-ion product.
Generalizing from one recall
Recall notices identify particular products, batches, or serial ranges. A notice is a reason to check your unit precisely, not proof that every product from that company is affected.
When to replace equipment immediately
- The casing is cracked, melted, split, or swollen.
- A plug, port, or cable connector is loose, bent, corroded, or exposing metal.
- The device emits smoke, sparks repeatedly, a burning odor, or unusual sounds.
- The power bank becomes abnormally hot, especially while idle or lightly loaded.
- Charging repeatedly starts and stops without a clear connection problem.
- The exact model or serial number appears in a current recall notice.
- The manufacturer cannot identify the product or provide credible safety information.
For a recalled or damaged lithium-ion power bank, follow the official remedy and local disposal guidance rather than placing it in ordinary household waste.

Official recall counts demonstrate that particular power-bank models have presented hazards, but they do not provide a representative probability that any random charger or power bank is unsafe. The Casely incidents and the Belkin and Anker unit counts above must remain attached to their named products and publication years.
Similarly, a standards organization can explain a protocol or certification program without certifying every product that mentions that standard. The most defensible safety decision is therefore product-specific: verify the phone, adapter, cable, condition, manufacturer information, and recall status together.
