The reliable way to investigate an app’s dice is to analyze a complete, unfiltered roll record—not a memorable losing streak. Record or export every roll, count each die face separately against the 1-in-6 expectation, examine ordered pairs and sequences, and use appropriate statistical tests. Then seek documentation of the random-number generator (RNG), its output-to-face mapping, independent test scope, and a way to reproduce individual rolls.
A frequency anomaly is a reason to investigate, not proof that an app deliberately changes outcomes. A short run of doubles, several bad rolls, or a histogram that looks unusual can occur by chance. No conclusion about a particular app is possible without its name, version, complete data, and implementation evidence.
What “biased dice” can mean
Players often use “biased” to describe any run that feels unfavorable, but several different technical questions are involved. Keeping them separate prevents a valid test from being asked to prove something it cannot establish.

Face frequencies
For one fair six-sided die, each face has probability 1/6. A frequency test asks whether the observed count of 1s, 2s, and so on is compatible with that distribution. It can identify an unusual imbalance in the sample.

Pairing and sequence dependence
Backgammon produces two dice at a time. Even if each die has the right overall frequencies, particular ordered pairs could be unusual, or one result could depend on the preceding roll, player, score, or board state. Those are separate questions from face frequency.
Unpredictability and selective handling
A generator might produce an apparently even long-run distribution while still being predictable, using a flawed mapping from random bytes to faces, or selecting among generated results. A frequency test cannot rule out those possibilities. Implementation review and reproducible verification are needed.
Build a trustworthy roll dataset
Your conclusion is only as good as the record you analyze. Start with the most complete source the app makes available and preserve the original data before cleaning or converting it.

- Keep every eligible roll. Do not select losses, spectacular doubles, or games that support a theory. Record wins, losses, resignations, unfinished matches, and ordinary turns according to one rule.
- Preserve context. Store the timestamp, match identifier, app name and version, platform, and any indication that a roll was an opening roll, a normal turn, a reroll, or an action with a special rule.
- Freeze the original files. Keep an untouched copy and make a separate working copy for parsing. Note when you downloaded the data and any conversion steps.
- Record missingness. If games or turns are absent, say how many and why. A partial history can still be analyzed, but its scope must be stated.
When an app exposes only an aggregate histogram, you can compare totals with the expected distribution, but you cannot independently check sequence dependence, ordered pairs, or whether some rolls were omitted. Say that limitation explicitly.

Count each die, not just the total
For a sample of n recorded rolls, each individual die has an expected count of n/6 for every face. Count die 1 and die 2 in separate six-bin tables. Combining the dice is acceptable only as an additional analysis; it can hide an imbalance because several pairs produce the same sum.
For example, a total of seven can arise from (1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), or (6,1). A sum chart cannot tell which face or ordered pair is responsible for an excess. Keep the original pair whenever the export supplies it.

Check your parsing before testing
- Verify that every record has exactly two legal face values from 1 through 6.
- Check that a displayed double, such as 4–4, contributes one four to each die rather than one combined observation.
- Confirm that separators, localization, and replay notation have not swapped the dice or dropped zeros and delimiters.
- Compare your computed totals with any in-app total as a basic reconciliation, without treating the app’s summary as independent evidence.
Apply statistical tests that match the question
A test evaluates a defined hypothesis under stated assumptions. It does not certify an app, and passing one test does not prove that the generator is secure or that outcomes were never altered.

Chi-square for face counts
For each die, compare observed counts Oi with expected counts Ei = n/6 using the statistic Σ(Oi − Ei)²/Ei. Report the sample definition, the test applied, and the resulting p-value or decision rule. Do not present a p-value without explaining which data were included and whether any records were excluded.
Runs and serial-correlation checks
A runs test can look for an unexpectedly patterned order after you define categories, such as above-versus-below three or a particular face versus all others. Serial-correlation analysis examines whether a value is related to earlier values. These tests address ordering, not merely how often each face appears.
Control the number of comparisons
If you test six faces, two dice, many pairings, several players, and numerous score ranges, at least one small p-value can appear by chance. Decide the primary comparisons before looking for patterns, or label exploratory findings as such and seek new data to confirm them.
Interpret an apparent anomaly correctly
A statistically significant result means that the specified fair model is a poor explanation for that dataset under the selected assumptions. It does not distinguish random fluctuation from a parsing error, omitted games, a changed app version, a special opening rule, a flawed mapping, or deliberate intervention. Recheck the raw records and scope before drawing a conclusion.

It is not proof that the app is fair, unpredictable, or free of selective handling. The available sample may be too small, incomplete, or insensitive to the type of defect you care about. No general sample-size threshold guarantees detection of every meaningful bias across apps.

Random sequences can contain conspicuous streaks. A run of bad rolls or doubles is weak evidence by itself, especially when it was noticed after the outcome. Treat it as a reason to preserve the complete log, not as a verdict.
Ask what RNG the app uses and what was tested
Statistical output checks are stronger when paired with technical documentation. Ask the operator for:
- The RNG name, version, and seeding or entropy design.
- The exact mapping from RNG output to the six die faces, including how values outside an even multiple of six are handled.
- Whether the test used raw RNG output, scaled game output, or both.
- The test date, report or certificate reference, testing laboratory, and findings.
- The app client version, server version, platform, distribution channel, and geographic scope covered.
- Whether source code or relevant implementation components were reviewed.
- Any changes since the test and the change-control process for updates.
The UK Gambling Commission’s RTS 7 states that “Random number generation and game results must be ‘acceptably random’.” It describes demonstrating randomness to a high degree of confidence through generally accepted statistical methods, with uniform output, theoretical probabilities, unpredictability, and no repeated streams or adaptive behavior under that standard. RTS 7 was last updated 7 May 2024. It is a regulatory standard for its legal scope, not a universal certification of every backgammon app.
Another concrete technical example is 25 CFR § 547.14, which enumerates chi-square, runs, and serial-correlation tests and addresses unpredictability and unbiased scaling. That rule concerns the Class II gaming-system context described by the regulation; it should not be presented as automatically governing a casual app.
Understand unbiased scaling and modulo bias
Even a sound random source can become biased when its output is converted to six faces. If a program takes a byte value and computes the remainder after division by six, values 0 through 255 do not divide evenly into six groups. Some faces receive one more byte value than others. A careful implementation uses a method such as rejection sampling: discard values in the incomplete tail and map only the evenly divisible range to faces.
This is one reason to request the mapping specification rather than relying only on a face histogram. A long sample might not reveal a small conversion bias, and a good histogram cannot demonstrate that the mapping remains correct after an update.

Look for independently verifiable rolls
A commit-reveal design can let players recompute individual outcomes. Before play, the system publishes a cryptographic commitment to secret input. After the roll or game, it reveals the committed value and the other inputs needed to verify that the commitment was not changed. A verifier then reproduces the derivation and confirms the die values.
When evaluating such a design, check that the commitment is time-stamped before the outcome, the later reveal is mandatory or detectable when missing, and the conversion to faces avoids modulo bias. An open-source backgammon dice project documents one example using rejection sampling. That project demonstrates a possible design; it does not prove that another app uses the same method or that its server implementation matches the description.
Compare fairness evidence across apps
If you are choosing among services or assessing competing fairness claims, compare evidence rather than marketing language. These dimensions answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one score.

Separate operator statements from independent evidence
Some published help pages describe fairness features but are still statements from the operator. For example, a Backgammon Galaxy help article marked modified 20 May 2025 says the service uses a cryptographically secure RNG and provides profile dice statistics. Those statements can tell you what to ask for, but they are not an independent examination of the underlying implementation.
Backgammon.com publishes a claim that Gaming Laboratories International tested its RNG in July 2026 and that the World Backgammon Federation conducted due diligence in August 2026. Treat those dates and organizations as the site’s published claims unless you can inspect the underlying reports, their scope, and the versions covered. The existence of a named laboratory or federation does not automatically establish that every current client, server, or game mode was included.

Common traps and how to correct them
Using only memorable losses
Problem: Selection after the fact exaggerates unusual outcomes. Correction: Use the complete available history and document exclusions before testing.

Counting sums instead of dice
Problem: Different pairs collapse into the same total. Correction: Keep two face columns and an ordered-pair field.
Mixing opening rolls with ordinary turns
Problem: Opening procedures may use different rules. Correction: Separate them whenever the record identifies them, or state that they were combined.
Ignoring an app update
Problem: Results from different implementations are treated as one population. Correction: partition by version and report the date range for each.

Relying on a chart with no raw data
Problem: You cannot inspect order, pairing, omissions, or duplicate records. Correction: request an export; if unavailable, limit the claim to the displayed aggregate.
Running unlimited subgroup searches
Problem: Looking at enough players, scores, and positions will eventually produce a striking fluctuation. Correction: pre-specify comparisons and label unscheduled discoveries as hypotheses for new data.
Write a reproducible finding
A useful report lets another person repeat the analysis without guessing what you did. Include:
- The app name, exact version, platform, region if relevant, and dates covered.
- The number of matches, turns, and individual dice, plus any missing or excluded records.
- The data source and a description of how opening rolls, doubles, and unfinished games were handled.
- Separate face counts for each die, expected counts, and the test method.
- Any ordered-pair, runs, serial-correlation, or subgroup analyses, with comparisons planned in advance.
- The software or script version used for counting, along with a checksum or shared copy of the raw file when privacy permits.
- A cautious interpretation that distinguishes an anomaly from evidence of intent, unpredictability, or tampering.
When the evidence justifies action
Use a staged response. If the record is incomplete or selected, improve collection before making a fairness claim. If a complete dataset shows an anomaly, reproduce the parsing, separate versions and game modes, and obtain an independent analysis. If the anomaly persists, ask the operator for the RNG and audit details and report the exact scope. If technical documentation and independently reproducible rolls agree with the observed data, confidence is stronger, but no single frequency test proves system-wide integrity.
Without a named app, its version, a complete roll record, and implementation or audit material, the responsible conclusion is limited: you have not established that its dice are biased, and you have not established that they are fair.
