Do not compare the power bank’s 10,000mAh label directly with your phone’s battery mAh. Convert both batteries to watt-hours (Wh), then reduce the power bank’s figure for voltage-conversion and charging losses. A full charge is plausible when the bank’s estimated usable Wh is comfortably higher than the phone battery’s Wh, but no label-only calculation can guarantee 100% in every situation.
Why a 10,000mAh label does not answer the question
Milliamp-hours measure electrical charge, not total energy by themselves. The same mAh quantity can represent different amounts of energy at different voltages. That is why a phone battery rated at one voltage cannot be compared fairly with a power-bank cell rated at another.
Use watt-hours for the comparison. Watt-hours combine charge capacity and voltage:
Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage in volts
The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) describes battery capacity using both mAh and mWh modes. For a cross-device calculation, Wh is the clearer value because it puts both batteries on the same energy scale.

A power bank also changes the voltage of its internal battery to the voltage delivered through USB. That conversion consumes energy, as does the phone’s charging circuit. Heat, cable resistance, the phone’s charging protocol, battery age and phone use while charging all affect the energy that reaches the battery.
The information you need from each device
Find the phone battery capacity and voltage
Look in the phone’s technical specifications, service documentation or regulatory label for the battery’s capacity in mAh and its rated voltage. Some manufacturers publish the battery directly in Wh; use that figure without converting it.
- Battery capacity, such as a stated mAh value.
- Rated battery voltage, not the 5V or other voltage coming from the charger.
- If available, the phone’s published Wh value, which is already an energy figure.
Do not substitute the USB input voltage for the battery’s rated voltage. USB voltage describes the charging connection; the phone battery’s voltage describes the energy stored inside the phone.

Inspect the power bank label, manual or specification table for a Wh rating. If only mAh is printed, identify the voltage basis for that rating before comparing it with the phone.
Anker’s A1642 user guide provides a useful example of how labels can separate these figures: it lists 10,000mAh / 37Wh for the bank and specifies a 5V, 2.4A output. The 37Wh value is the bank’s rated internal energy; the 5V, 2.4A figures describe output conditions and charging rate, not additional capacity.
| Specification | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| mAh | Charge capacity at a particular voltage | Convert to Wh only when the voltage basis is known |
| Wh | Stored energy | Use as the main comparison with the phone’s battery Wh |
| Output voltage and current | Electrical conditions at the USB port | Check compatibility and estimate maximum charging rate |
| Output wattage | Power delivered per unit of time | Use to assess charging speed, not total number of charges |
| Charging protocol | How the bank and phone negotiate power | Check whether the connection can use the phone’s supported mode |
Calculate the phone’s battery energy
If the phone lists Wh, record that number and skip the conversion. Otherwise, use the rated mAh and voltage in this calculation:
Phone Wh = (phone mAh ÷ 1,000) × phone battery voltage

Worked example: a hypothetical 4,000mAh phone
Suppose a phone battery is rated at 4,000mAh and 3.85V. The stored-energy estimate is:
(4,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.85 = 15.4Wh
This is an arithmetic example, not a claim about any particular phone. Replace both numbers with the ratings printed for your own model.
Worked example: a hypothetical 5,000mAh phone
For a 5,000mAh battery rated at 3.85V:
(5,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.85 = 19.25Wh
A phone with a higher battery Wh value requires more energy than a phone with the same mAh rating at a lower voltage, which is why mAh-only comparisons can mislead.
Estimate how much of the bank can reach the phone
Start with the bank’s rated Wh, then account for the energy lost while converting the internal-cell voltage to USB output and while charging the phone.

This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal efficiency rating or an independent test of every 10,000mAh bank.
Applying that estimate to the 37Wh A1642 example gives:
- 37Wh × 0.60 = 22.2Wh estimated usable output energy.
- 37Wh × 0.70 = 25.9Wh estimated usable output energy.
The 22.2–25.9Wh range is arithmetic applied to the manufacturer’s stated percentage. Actual delivered energy can be lower or higher for a particular model and set of conditions.

| Item | Value in the example | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Power-bank label | 10,000mAh / 37Wh | Rated internal capacity listed in the A1642 guide |
| Estimated usable output | 22.2–25.9Wh | 60%–70% manufacturer estimate applied to 37Wh |
| Hypothetical phone A | 15.4Wh | 4,000mAh at 3.85V |
| Hypothetical phone B | 19.25Wh | 5,000mAh at 3.85V |
On paper, the estimated usable output exceeds either hypothetical phone battery’s stored energy. That makes one full charge plausible from near empty, but it does not promise that the phone will display 100%. The phone may be running during the charge, the bank may shut down before its rated energy is exhausted, and the final part of a lithium battery’s charge can be managed at a lower rate.

Use the result to judge whether a full charge is plausible
When the usable Wh is comfortably higher
If the estimated usable output is substantially above the phone’s Wh, a full charge from near empty is reasonable to expect under ordinary conditions. “Comfortably higher” matters because the estimate itself is a range and because the phone consumes energy while it is on.
When the values are close
If the bank’s estimated usable Wh is only slightly above the phone’s Wh, the outcome is sensitive to losses and conditions. A phone being used for navigation, video, gaming or a weak-signal connection can consume part of the incoming energy. Temperature and battery condition can also change the result.
When the usable Wh is lower
If the estimated output is below the phone battery’s Wh, one complete charge from near empty is unlikely. The bank can still add a substantial percentage, but the phone should not be expected to reach 100% solely from that cycle.
These comparisons estimate energy, not the percentage shown by the phone. A battery-management system may reserve energy, alter charging current near full, or report capacity differently from the nominal rating.
Follow this calculation step by step
- Record the phone’s battery rating. Write down its mAh and rated battery voltage, or its published Wh.
- Convert the phone to Wh if necessary. Divide mAh by 1,000 and multiply by the battery voltage.
- Record the bank’s rated Wh. Prefer the Wh value printed in the manual or specification table. If the bank lists only mAh, verify the voltage at which that capacity is rated.
- Apply a realistic loss allowance. Use a manufacturer’s stated usable-output estimate when one exists, and label it as an estimate. For the 37Wh example, 60%–70% produces 22.2–25.9Wh.
- Compare the two Wh values. A comfortably larger usable-output figure means a full charge is plausible; a close or smaller figure means it is uncertain or unlikely.
- Check the charging connection. Confirm that the bank’s port, cable and charging protocol can provide power accepted by the phone.
- Adjust your expectation for use and conditions. Charging while the phone is active, extreme temperatures and an aging battery can reduce the percentage gained.
Check output power, protocol and cable separately
Capacity answers “how much energy is available.” Output power answers “how quickly can it be delivered.” Do not replace the Wh calculation with a wattage comparison.
The A1642 example lists 5V and 2.4A, which corresponds to a maximum of about 12W under that output specification (5V × 2.4A = 12W). That figure describes the port’s rate under the listed conditions; it does not turn 37Wh into a larger battery.

USB Power Delivery supports negotiated power levels and coexists with USB Battery Charging. A compatible higher-power connection can shorten charging time when the phone, bank and cable all support the same mode. It does not increase the bank’s stored energy or guarantee a full charge.
- Match the cable to the bank’s connector and the phone’s connector.
- Use a cable suitable for the charging mode and power level you intend to use.
- Check whether the bank supports the phone’s required or preferred protocol.
- Remember that the phone may accept less power than the bank can advertise.
If the bank repeatedly starts and stops charging, a protocol, cable, port-contact or low-current issue may be involved even when the bank still has plenty of Wh remaining.

Why real-world results differ from the calculation
Conversion and charging losses
The bank’s internal cells operate at their own voltage, while USB output and the phone battery use different electrical conditions. Each conversion stage loses some energy, commonly as heat. The phone’s charging circuitry also does not transfer every watt-hour at the port into stored battery energy.
Phone use during charging
The phone draws power for its screen, processor, radios and applications while it charges. If that consumption is high, some of the bank’s output maintains operation instead of increasing the battery percentage.
Temperature
Charging behavior changes with temperature. A phone or bank that is hot, very cold or enclosed with poor ventilation may reduce charging current or pause charging. The calculation does not model these controls.
Battery age and condition
Nominal battery ratings describe a design capacity, not necessarily the present capacity of an older phone. A worn battery can have less usable energy than its original specification, while its charging system may also limit current differently.
End-of-charge behavior
Phones commonly manage the final portion of charging more carefully than the middle portion. The bank can therefore deliver energy for a long time without the displayed percentage rising at the same rate near full.

Bank cutoff and reserve behavior
A power bank may stop its output when the load becomes very small or when its internal protection system reaches a cutoff threshold. Its label does not mean every last watt-hour is available at the USB port.

| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| Subtracting 5,000mAh from 10,000mAh | The two mAh ratings may refer to different voltages | Convert both batteries to Wh |
| Using 5V as the phone battery voltage | 5V is a USB output condition, not necessarily the battery’s rated voltage | Use the phone battery’s own rated voltage |
| Treating 10,000mAh as delivered USB capacity | Internal-cell capacity is reduced by conversion and charging losses | Apply a stated usable-output estimate or a clearly labeled allowance |
| Assuming higher watts means more charges | Watts measure delivery rate, not stored energy | Use Wh for capacity and watts for speed |
| Ignoring the cable and protocol | The connection may not negotiate the intended power mode | Verify port, cable and protocol compatibility |
| Calling an estimate a guarantee | Temperature, phone use and battery condition vary | Describe the result as plausible, uncertain or unlikely |
How to compare two 10,000mAh power banks
Two banks with the same headline mAh can provide different results. Compare the following properties in order:
- Rated Wh and voltage basis. Confirm what the mAh number represents and whether a Wh figure is supplied.
- Usable-output information. Prefer a documented output-capacity figure or conversion estimate, while checking whether it is a manufacturer estimate or an independent measurement.
- Output power and protocols. These determine compatibility and charging speed, not total energy.
- Ports and cable requirements. A bank may have different limits on different ports or require a particular cable for a charging mode.
- Independent measured performance. If a credible test exists for the exact model, it can supplement—but not replace—the label calculation.
No independent test of a particular named phone-and-bank pair establishes a universal result here. Treat a model-specific measurement as evidence for that pair and those test conditions, not as a promise for every phone.

What a USB power meter can and cannot tell you
A USB power meter can show voltage, current and accumulated energy at the output connection during a charging session. That can help reveal whether a particular setup is delivering less power than expected or stopping early. It measures the tested bank, cable, phone and conditions together; it does not rewrite the bank’s rated capacity or prove that the same result will occur with another phone.
A meter is not necessary for the basic Wh calculation. It becomes useful when the label estimate and the observed behavior disagree, such as when a compatible phone gains very little charge or the bank shuts off unexpectedly.
How to report the result accurately
A precise answer should identify the devices and the assumptions. A useful statement looks like this:
“This bank is rated at 37Wh. Using the manufacturer’s 60%–70% usable-output estimate gives approximately 22.2–25.9Wh at the output. The phone battery is rated at 15.4Wh, so one full charge from near empty is plausible, but the result can be lower if the phone is used during charging or conditions reduce efficiency.”
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That wording keeps the bank’s rated energy, the manufacturer’s estimate and the uncertainty separate. Avoid saying “a 10,000mAh bank charges every phone twice” because the phone’s Wh, output conditions and real-world losses are not fixed by the headline mAh number.
Bottom line for the 10,000mAh question
Check the phone’s rated battery Wh, check the bank’s rated Wh, discount the bank for conversion and charging losses, and then verify output compatibility. The 10,000mAh label alone cannot tell you whether the phone will reach 100%. A model-specific calculation can show that a full charge is plausible, uncertain or unlikely; only the exact devices and actual conditions determine what happens in practice.
