Horizontal lines can come from a damaged LCD or another display-hardware fault, but intermittent lines on some laptop models can also be linked to graphics drivers or power-saving features. Compare the laptop screen with an external display, check whether the lines appear before the operating system loads, and use software fixes only when they apply to your exact model. Visible damage or persistent lines call for model-specific repair advice.
What horizontal lines can indicate
There is no single cause for every line. The pattern and when it appears help narrow down whether to look first at physical display hardware or software. Neither clue alone identifies the failed component.
Possible screen damage or another internal display fault
Multiple jagged lines, broad white or black areas, or visible impact damage can indicate a cracked LCD. HP says these cracked-screen patterns may be visible during startup before Windows loads and that the screen must be replaced. That guidance applies to the described damage pattern; a thin line by itself does not prove the panel is cracked. HP Support’s screen troubleshooting guidance recommends authorized repair for a damaged display.

If the laptop’s built-in screen has lines but a known-good external display is clear, the internal display path deserves attention. That comparison cannot tell you whether the LCD panel, its internal connection, or another part is responsible; model-specific inspection is needed.

Possible graphics-driver or power-saving behavior
Some intermittent lines can be software-related. Dell’s display guidance says resetting graphics drivers may help with corrupted settings, and rolling back a display driver may help if the problem began after an update. It also suggests checking the recommended display resolution and using Safe Mode to see whether normal-running software or services are involved. The page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but its advice is general display troubleshooting; follow your laptop maker’s instructions for your model. Dell’s display troubleshooting guide includes those checks.
LG describes a narrower case: lines that appear and disappear along the bottom of the screen on certain LG models. Its guide, dated October 12, 2023, identifies Intel Panel Self Refresh and video-driver errors as possible causes. The setting advice below applies only to the models LG lists, not to laptops generally. LG’s guide to horizontal lines names models 17Z90P, 16ZD90P, 14T90P, and 16T90P.

How to narrow down the cause safely
- Observe the pattern. Note whether the lines are fixed or intermittent, limited to a band or spread across the screen, and accompanied by visible cracks or impact damage. Do not press on the display to test it. Broad jagged lines or large white or black areas warrant repair assessment.
- Compare with an external display. If available, connect a known-good monitor or TV with a compatible port and cable. If its image is clear while the laptop screen still has lines, focus on the internal display path; this result does not identify the exact part. If the external display also shows artifacts, investigate graphics software and settings as well.
- Check when the lines appear. If they are visible during startup or firmware diagnostics, a Windows application or driver alone is less likely to explain the symptom. This is a clue, not a diagnosis; HP notes that cracked-LCD patterns can appear before Windows boots.
- Try relevant software checks. If the issue began after a software update, check the recommended display resolution, restart the graphics driver, and consider rolling back a recently updated driver if that option is available. Use the laptop maker’s support site for model-specific steps, and avoid unknown third-party driver downloads.
- Arrange service if damage is visible or lines persist. Check warranty status and the manufacturer’s repair process before opening the laptop or buying a panel. HP recommends authorized repair for damaged screens. Without the laptop model and part details, a particular screen or cable cannot be recommended.
LG’s setting fix applies only to listed models
For the 17Z90P, 16ZD90P, 14T90P, and 16T90P models covered by LG’s guide, check Intel Graphics Command Center and turn off Panel Self Refresh and Display Power Savings. If the lines persist, LG suggests reinstalling or updating the graphics driver. Menu names can vary by driver version, so use LG’s model-specific guidance rather than applying these settings to another laptop.

A clear external image alongside lines on the built-in screen points attention toward the laptop’s internal display path. Lines on both screens make a graphics or software issue worth checking, though they do not rule out every hardware fault. An external monitor or TV can also serve as a temporary way to use the computer, but it does not repair the laptop’s built-in display. Borrowing a display for the comparison avoids buying one solely for diagnosis.

When to get the screen assessed
Seek model-specific repair help if the screen is visibly damaged, shows broad jagged lines or large white or black areas, or continues to show lines after relevant software checks. For the cracked-LCD patterns it describes, HP states: “The screen must be replaced. There are no actions available to correct this problem.” That statement is specific to those patterns, not every horizontal line. Check the laptop maker’s service process and warranty terms before authorizing repair or attempting to replace a component.
