To check voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app, open its keypad, then touch and hold 1 to call your carrier’s voicemail system. Follow the spoken prompts to hear messages or set up your mailbox. If your carrier supports visual voicemail on your device and in your region, you can instead open its voicemail app or a supported voicemail inbox in the Phone app.
Call your carrier mailbox to listen to voicemail
- Open the Phone app on your Galaxy.
- Open the keypad or dial pad.
- Touch and hold 1 until the voicemail call starts.
- Follow the spoken prompts to play new or saved messages.
This is the normal basic route documented by Samsung and Google Phone Help. The carrier controls voicemail service and setup, so prompts and available options can differ. You can also tap a new voicemail notification to open a message where the Phone app supports that route.
Set up voicemail the first time
If you have not set up the mailbox, the carrier’s spoken prompts guide you through it. Be ready to create a mailbox password and record a greeting or name if prompted. The precise steps and password rules depend on your carrier; Samsung notes that voicemail options vary by carrier.

Visual voicemail shows messages in an inbox, so you can select a message rather than navigate only through spoken prompts. Support depends on the carrier, region, device, app and sometimes service plan. Samsung says the carrier voicemail app’s name and icon can vary.

Carrier voicemail app
Open the voicemail app provided for your line and follow its welcome and setup screens. On a US Verizon Samsung setup, for example, the Verizon voicemail guide describes opening the Voicemail app, selecting a message and tapping play. That is a carrier-specific example, not a universal Galaxy menu. Verizon also says deleted messages cannot be retrieved and archived messages are saved to the device’s internal storage.
Google Phone app
Where Google’s Phone app and your carrier support the feature, open More options → Settings → Voicemail → Visual voicemail. Google warns that visual voicemail is not supported by every carrier or region. It also says that using a carrier voicemail app turns off visual voicemail in Google’s Phone app to avoid a conflict. These Google Phone settings should not be assumed to match Samsung’s Phone app menus. See Google Phone Help for its supported workflow.

Choose the access method that fits your line

Clear a voicemail notification that will not go away
First, call the mailbox and listen to all new messages; Samsung says the notification should normally clear afterward. If it remains, Samsung’s UK guidance recommends the following software-version-dependent steps:

- Open Settings → Apps.
- If needed, use the menu to show system apps, then open Call settings → Storage.
- Clear cache and data. Clearing data resets the Phone app and removes recent calls, but not contacts.
- If the alert remains, repeat the cache and data steps for the Phone app.
- If it still persists, contact your network provider to check mailbox or account settings.
Labels can vary by software release and market. Voicemail access, mailbox setup and the service itself are controlled by the network provider. Samsung’s steps are documented in its UK voicemail-notification guidance.

Samsung Direct voicemail is a different feature
Samsung’s US guidance describes Direct voicemail for Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or later; availability and options vary by model, software and carrier. It lets a caller leave a message, lets you send an incoming call directly to voicemail or after a selected ring duration, and may let you answer while the caller is recording. The phone must be on and connected to the mobile network. Direct voicemail does not work for video calls and may not work when internal storage is nearly full. It is not a universal Galaxy feature and is distinct from retrieving messages in the carrier mailbox. Details are in Samsung’s US Direct voicemail guide.
