Open the UPI app you used, find the payment in transaction history, and record its status and transaction number or RRN. A debit does not always mean the payment is complete: the next step depends on whether the transaction is pending, failed, successful, or unauthorised.

For a failed UPI transfer in which the beneficiary was not credited, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires automatic reversal by T+1. For a merchant payment where the merchant did not receive confirmation, the deadline is T+5. Here, T is the calendar date of the transaction. If the applicable deadline is missed, RBI’s framework provides ₹100 per day for the delay.

Start by checking the transaction status

Use the same UPI application, bank application, or mobile-wallet interface from which you initiated the payment. Open its Transaction history, Payments, or similarly named section and select the exact payment. Some apps provide a Refresh status, Check status, or Raise dispute control on the details screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the status shown by the app rather than relying only on the debit notification from your bank. Save a screenshot or export the receipt before the app changes the display. A notification can confirm that your account was debited without proving that the beneficiary or merchant received a final credit.

NPCI’s UPI – Frequently Asked Questions says users can check UPI status or raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app. NPCI also provides a separate transaction-status and complaint facility for payments routed through its systems.

Record the identifiers before contacting anyone

Support teams can trace a payment only when you provide its identifiers. Copy the details exactly as displayed; do not rely on memory or a cropped notification.

  • Transaction date and approximate time
  • Amount and account debited
  • Transaction number, UPI transaction ID, or RRN
  • Beneficiary name and UPI ID for a transfer
  • Merchant name, order number, or terminal reference for a purchase
  • The bank-statement debit entry
  • The status and error message shown in the UPI app
  • Any app, bank, or NPCI complaint reference number

NPCI’s complaint form asks for the transaction date and transaction number or RRN. Its portal indicates that the member bank or institution can check progress using the transaction details or a complaint reference number, so keep both until the case is closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the original RRN in every follow-up. If you make another payment, record that payment separately; do not let a second RRN replace the identifier for the first disputed transaction. Keep the debit entry and any later reversal credit visible in your statement so the bank can compare the two timestamps.

Use the correct RBI reversal deadline

RBI’s framework for failed transactions using authorised payment systems separates two UPI situations. The deadline is measured from T, the calendar date on which the transaction occurred, not from the time you opened a complaint. T+1 and T+5 therefore mean calendar-day deadlines, not business-day deadlines.

What happened Required reversal Compensation for delay
Your account was debited for a UPI transfer, but the beneficiary’s account was not credited. The beneficiary bank must auto-reverse the amount by T+1. ₹100 for each day after T+1 until the reversal, under RBI’s framework.
Your account was debited for a merchant payment, but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation. Auto-reversal is required within T+5. ₹100 for each day after T+5 until the reversal, under RBI’s framework.

For example, if a person-to-person transfer occurred on 10 October, T+1 is 11 October. If a merchant payment occurred on 10 October, T+5 is 15 October. These are calendar dates, so weekends and holidays are not automatically excluded.

These rules concern transactions that were not fully completed for reasons not attributable to the customer, including a missing beneficiary credit. They should not be reduced to a generic promise that every failed payment will be refunded within 24 hours. First identify whether the failed leg was the beneficiary credit or the merchant’s confirmation.

What to do when the payment is pending

A pending payment means the final result has not been confirmed. Do not immediately send a second payment: the first one may still settle, creating a duplicate debit. Note the time you checked and refresh only through the app or bank’s official interface.

Check whether the beneficiary has actually received the money

Ask the recipient or merchant to check the credited account, not just an SMS or order page. If the recipient confirms a credit, save that confirmation and ask the merchant to reconcile the transaction using the UPI reference number. Do not ask the recipient to share a UPI PIN or approve a new collect request.

Allow for the beneficiary-bank delay described by NPCI

NPCI’s FAQ says a pending transaction in which the payer was debited but the beneficiary was not credited can reflect a delay at the beneficiary bank. It says the amount will reach the beneficiary within 48 hours once that bank completes its daily settlements. This is an NPCI FAQ explanation for a pending case; it does not replace RBI’s T+1 rule for a transfer that ultimately qualifies as a failed transaction.

Contact support if the app remains pending

Use the support or grievance control on the transaction screen and give the transaction number or RRN. If the app offers no useful update, contact the bank that issued the debited account. Continue tracking the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline based on whether this was a transfer or a merchant payment. Ask the bank to state whether it is treating the item as pending, successful, or failed, rather than accepting an indefinite “processing” answer.

What to do when the payment failed after your account was debited

  1. Confirm the failure in transaction history. Open the payment details, refresh the status if that option exists, and capture the failure message.
  2. Check the bank statement. Confirm that the amount was actually debited, rather than merely blocked or shown as a temporary authorisation.
  3. Classify the payment. A person-to-person or account transfer uses the T+1 rule when the beneficiary was not credited. A merchant purchase uses T+5 when the merchant did not receive confirmation.
  4. Raise an in-app complaint. Select the failed transaction and choose the available dispute, complaint, or refund option. Submit the RRN, date, amount, and recipient or merchant information.
  5. Register through NPCI if necessary. NPCI’s complaint facility accepts status checks and complaints for transactions routed through its payment systems and forwards the case to the relevant member institution.
  6. Contact the bank that debited your account. Give the bank the app complaint number and ask it to trace the reversal against the RRN.
  7. Monitor the deadline. If the amount is not reversed by T+1 or T+5, ask the bank to apply the prescribed delayed-reversal compensation.

NPCI’s FAQ separately advises contacting bank customer support if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. That FAQ advice is an early support step; the RBI transaction-type deadlines remain the regulatory benchmark for a failed transfer or merchant payment.

When you contact the bank, describe the issue precisely: “My account was debited, the UPI transaction is marked failed, and the beneficiary was not credited,” or “The merchant did not receive confirmation.” This wording helps the bank place the case under the appropriate transaction category instead of treating it as a generic card or cash-withdrawal dispute.

How to raise and track a complaint

Use the UPI app first

Open the transaction, select Help, Report a problem, Dispute, or the label used by your app, then choose the closest reason: failed payment, amount debited, beneficiary not credited, or merchant confirmation missing. Submit only one complaint for the same failure unless support instructs you otherwise; multiple tickets can make tracking harder.

Save the complaint reference, the date submitted, and the institution to which it was routed. A screenshot of the final submission page is useful if the app later hides the ticket. Record every call, email, or chat reference alongside the original RRN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use NPCI’s complaint facility when the app does not resolve it

NPCI’s Register a Complaint facility supports status checks and complaint registration for transactions routed through NPCI payment systems. The relevant member bank or institution—not NPCI itself—is responsible for investigating and resolving the complaint. After registration or closure, use the transaction details or complaint reference number to check the final status with that institution.

Escalate after the applicable turnaround time

If the bank does not provide redress within the relevant RBI turnaround time, RBI’s circular points customers to the Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, as amended. Keep the bank’s complaint number, dates of contact, transaction evidence, and any response when making an escalation. Explain the original transaction date, the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline, the date you complained, and whether the principal and ₹100-per-day compensation were credited.

How delayed-reversal compensation works

RBI’s framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline. The framework says this compensation is to be credited without waiting for the customer to submit a separate claim or complaint.

Ask the bank to identify both the date on which the reversal became due and the date on which it was actually credited. For instance, if a transfer due on T+1 is credited two calendar days late, ask the bank to explain the corresponding daily compensation. If the bank returns the principal but omits compensation, refer to the failed-transaction framework in your written complaint and retain the response for any Ombudsman escalation.

Fraud and unauthorised debits require a different route

Do not handle an unfamiliar debit as an ordinary delayed-reversal case. If you did not authorise the transaction, or the amount is fraudulent or unidentified, contact your bank immediately through its official telephone number, app, branch, or other verified channel. Ask the bank to block further exposure, register the fraud report, and provide a complaint number.

NPCI specifically directs users to their bank for fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transaction complaints. Do not share a UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN, or screen-sharing access with anyone claiming to process a refund. A genuine refund does not require you to approve a new “collect” request or enter a PIN to receive money. Preserve the suspicious transaction details and any messages, but do not delay the bank report while gathering screenshots.

UPI HELP: what it can and cannot do

An NPCI circular dated 8 October 2025 describes UPI HELP as a pilot AI-powered support service. In participating member channels, it includes status checking and complaint logging or tracking for incomplete transactions and certain merchant-service issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the circular describes a pilot, availability is not established for every UPI user. If UPI HELP appears in your bank or UPI app, it can be an additional way to check status or open a ticket; it does not change the RBI deadlines, the bank’s responsibility for resolution, or the fraud-reporting route. Continue to save the ordinary transaction and complaint references even if UPI HELP displays a separate support conversation.

Common situations and the right response

The app says failed, but no debit appears

Check the bank statement and available balance. If there is no debit or hold, keep the failed receipt for your records and retry only after confirming that the first attempt did not create a pending transaction.

The app says pending, but the recipient says they were paid

Do not pay again. Ask the recipient for the credited amount and time, then have the bank or merchant reconcile the payment using the RRN. Keep the transaction pending until the issuing bank confirms its final state.

The merchant says no payment arrived, but your account was debited

Give the merchant the UPI reference number and ask it to check its acquiring or settlement records. If confirmation was not received and the transaction remains incomplete, the merchant-payment case is subject to the T+5 reversal deadline.

The transfer was to a person, not a merchant

Use the beneficiary-credit rule. If your account was debited and the beneficiary was not credited, the required auto-reversal deadline is T+1, with ₹100 per day for delay beyond that date.

The bank says the complaint is closed, but the money is still missing

Ask for the closure reason in writing and provide the original RRN, debit proof, and complaint reference. If the applicable turnaround time has passed without effective redress, use the RBI Integrated Ombudsman route described in the bank’s grievance process and RBI’s framework.

The bank says the merchant must refund you

Ask whether the payment is recorded as a completed merchant transaction or as a failed transaction with missing confirmation. If it is the latter, the RBI T+5 auto-reversal framework applies; obtain the bank’s classification and keep it with your complaint.

You made two payments for one purchase

Keep both RRNs and identify which payment the merchant received. Do not cancel or dispute the wrong transaction. Ask the merchant and bank to reconcile each reference separately, because the original failed attempt may still reverse while the later attempt settles.

Checklist before you close the case

  • The app shows a final status rather than an unexplained pending state.
  • The bank statement shows the original debit and, if applicable, the reversal credit.
  • The beneficiary or merchant has confirmed the outcome where relevant.
  • You have saved the RRN, transaction date, complaint number, and bank responses.
  • Any compensation due for missing the RBI deadline has been credited.
  • For an unauthorised debit, the bank has issued a fraud complaint reference and explained the next protective steps.
  • You have checked that no duplicate payment remains unresolved.

What does T+1 mean for a failed UPI transfer?

T is the calendar date of the transaction. If your account was debited but a person or other beneficiary was not credited, the beneficiary bank must auto-reverse the amount by T+1.

What is the deadline for a failed UPI merchant payment?

When your account was debited but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation, RBI’s framework requires auto-reversal within T+5 calendar days.

What compensation applies when reversal is late?

RBI’s framework specifies ₹100 for each day after the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline. It says the compensation should be credited without waiting for a separate customer claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The payment is pending and money was debited. Should I pay again?

No. A pending payment may still settle and a second payment can create a duplicate debit. Check with the beneficiary or merchant, refresh the status, and contact the bank if it remains unresolved.

Where should I complain about a failed UPI payment?

Start with the complaint or dispute option on the transaction in your UPI app. If necessary, register the case through NPCI’s complaint facility and contact the bank that debited your account. The relevant member institution is responsible for resolution.

What if the debit is fraudulent or unauthorised?

Contact your bank immediately through an official channel and request a fraud complaint number and protective action. NPCI directs fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transaction complaints to the user’s bank rather than the ordinary delayed-reversal route.

Is UPI HELP available to everyone?

NPCI’s 8 October 2025 circular describes UPI HELP as a pilot available through participating member channels. It may help check status or log and track complaints, but it does not replace the bank, NPCI complaint process, or RBI deadlines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the payment in your UPI history, save the RRN and debit proof, and classify what failed. A debited UPI transfer with no beneficiary credit is due for reversal by T+1; a debited merchant payment with no confirmation is due by T+5. Raise the complaint in the app or through NPCI, follow up with the bank, and request ₹100 per day for any delay beyond the applicable deadline. Report any unauthorised debit to the bank immediately.
