To check your UPI limit, start in the UPI or banking app connected to the account that will fund the payment. Look for UPI settings, payment limits, account restrictions, and transaction history. If the app does not show an account-specific limit, ask the bank that holds the account for its per-transaction cap, daily aggregate cap, transaction-count rule, and any temporary restriction.
You cannot automatically raise every UPI limit. NPCI sets overall ceilings, while each bank may impose a lower internal limit. A bank can review its own cap, but there is no universal increase button, guaranteed approval, standard form, or fixed turnaround time.
What a UPI transaction limit actually means
“The UPI limit” is not one number. A payment can be blocked by several different controls:

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Per-transaction amount: the maximum value of one payment.
- Aggregate amount: the total value permitted during a period, commonly a day, by the bank or account.
- Transaction count: a maximum number of payments in a period, even when the total amount is still below the amount cap.
- Category ceiling: a different NPCI ceiling for an eligible payment type, such as tax, hospital, education, IPO, or Retail Direct Scheme payments.
- Merchant eligibility: some enhanced ceilings require the recipient to be a qualifying or verified merchant.
- Temporary account restriction: a cooling period, newly registered device restriction, PIN reset restriction, fraud-control hold, or another bank security rule.
NPCI publishes network-level ceilings, but member banks can set lower internal limits within those ceilings. NPCI states in its 28 August 2025 circular: “Member banks may continue to be provided the discretion to set their internal limits based on their internal policy, within the overall ceilings prescribed by NPCI.” Read the circular at NPCI’s official PDF.

That is why a published ₹1 lakh ceiling does not prove that your account can send ₹1 lakh. Your bank, account profile, payment category, recipient, recent activity, and security status can all produce a lower available limit.
Published UPI ceilings and bank limits
The figures below are published ceilings or examples, not a promise that every customer can send the amount.
| Limit or ceiling | Scope | Owner and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ₹1 lakh per transaction | Ordinary UPI payments | NPCI FAQ; certain categories have separate higher ceilings. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ. |
| Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction | Certain categories listed by NPCI | NPCI category ceiling; the payment must fit the applicable category and bank rules. |
| Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments | NPCI FAQ; eligibility depends on the payment type and participating entities. |
| ₹5 lakh per transaction | Specified additional categories aligned to tax payments | NPCI circular dated 28 August 2025; enhanced limits apply to covered categories and verified merchants, while banks may set lower internal limits. |
| ₹5 lakh per transaction | Tax payments | RBI policy decision published in 2024; see RBI’s tax-payment release. |
| ₹5 lakh per transaction | Payments to hospitals and educational institutions | RBI decision published in 2023; see RBI’s publication. |
| ₹1 lakh per day | SBI UPI example | State Bank of India figure, page last updated 4 February 2025. It is not a universal limit for other banks; see SBI’s UPI customer-care page. |
Do not apply a category ceiling to an ordinary person-to-person transfer. A higher network ceiling only becomes relevant when the transaction type, recipient, merchant status, participating bank, and account rules all qualify.
How to check your applicable limit
- Identify the funding account. In the UPI app, note which bank account is selected as the source of funds. The app provides the payment interface, but the account-holding bank can impose the operative restriction.
- Open the app’s UPI and account-limit areas. Look through UPI settings, linked accounts, payment settings, account information, security controls, and any page labelled limits or transaction permissions. Menu names differ between providers, so there is no single path that applies to every app.
- Check both amount and count information. If shown, record the per-payment amount, daily or periodic aggregate amount, remaining allowance, and number-of-transaction rule. A screen showing only one figure may not show every restriction.
- Classify the payment. Decide whether it is a person-to-person transfer, ordinary merchant payment, tax payment, hospital or education payment, IPO, Retail Direct Scheme payment, or another special category. Check whether the recipient is an eligible or verified merchant before relying on a higher ceiling.
- Review the payment history and error message. Record the amount, date and time, recipient, category, selected account, and the exact decline text. This information helps the bank distinguish an amount excess from a daily cap, count limit, category mismatch, or temporary restriction.
- Ask the account-holding bank when the app is unclear. Use the phone number, secure message option, or support route displayed in the bank’s official app or website. Ask for the live account-specific values rather than quoting a general internet limit.
NPCI’s FAQ says: “You can also raise your grievance or check status of UPI transaction through the UPI App of the participating banks.” The same app may show status or dispute tools, but the exact menu is bank-specific. See NPCI’s FAQ.
A two-layer check before retrying
Use two separate checks before sending the payment again. First, check the network and category layer: is the amount within the NPCI ceiling for this kind of payment, and is the recipient a qualifying or verified merchant where that is required? Second, check the account layer: what cap, remaining daily amount, transaction count, and security hold does the funding bank apply?
This prevents a common error: seeing a ₹5 lakh ceiling for one category and assuming that changing the amount or retrying in another UPI app will unlock it for an ordinary transfer. The app does not replace the bank’s account controls, and switching apps normally does not change the limit on the linked account.

How to diagnose a declined UPI payment
NPCI identifies amount excess, transaction-count excess, and daily-amount excess among possible business decline reasons. The app’s wording is therefore important, but it does not by itself prove which control was reached.
| What happened | Likely limit type to investigate | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| A single large payment fails immediately | Per-transaction bank cap, NPCI ceiling, category or merchant eligibility | Confirm the payment category and ask the bank for its per-transaction cap. |
| A smaller payment fails after earlier payments | Daily aggregate amount or transaction-count limit | Review today’s successful and failed attempts and ask for remaining amount and count. |
| Only a tax, hospital, education, IPO, or similar payment fails | Category qualification, verified-merchant status, participating-bank support, or a lower bank cap | Ask the recipient and your bank whether this category is enabled for that payment route. |
| Payments fail after a PIN change or reset | Cooling period or temporary security restriction | Check the bank’s PIN and cooling-period instructions instead of repeatedly retrying. |
| The app shows no limit at all | Information not exposed in the app, or a bank-side control | Contact the account-holding bank through its official support channel. |
Keep the exact error text. “Limit exceeded” can refer to amount, count, or daily total, while a generic decline can require bank-side investigation.
Questions to ask bank support
Ask for precise answers rather than a generic statement that UPI supports a particular maximum. Useful questions include:
- What is my current per-transaction UPI cap for this account?
- What is the aggregate amount I can send during the relevant period, and how much remains?
- Is there a transaction-count limit, and do failed attempts affect it?
- Is the payment being treated as ordinary UPI or as a category such as tax, hospital, education, IPO, or Retail Direct Scheme?
- Does the recipient need verified-merchant status for the higher ceiling?
- Is a PIN reset, device change, account-linking event, or fraud review causing a temporary restriction?
- If this is an internal bank cap, can the bank review it, and what verification is required?
Ask the representative to state the applicable rule and effective date in the service response. Save the case number and any written confirmation so you do not have to repeat the same history.
Can you raise a UPI limit?
First determine who controls the limit:
- NPCI ceiling: a bank cannot raise an ordinary payment above the applicable network ceiling. A higher amount may be available only by using a qualifying payment category, not by changing a setting.
- Bank internal cap: the bank may accept a request to review its limit, but approval, verification, and the resulting amount are discretionary.
- Category or merchant restriction: the recipient or payment purpose may not qualify for the higher ceiling. Changing your account setting will not make an ordinary transfer qualify.
- Temporary restriction: waiting for the cooling period or completing the bank’s security process may restore payments; this is not a permanent limit increase.
- App display issue: the limit may exist but be visible only to the bank’s support team.
There is no universal request form, guaranteed increase, standard processing time, or common app toggle established for all banks. Do not assume that an option called “change limit” in one bank’s app exists elsewhere.

- Use an official channel. Open the bank’s official app or type its website address yourself. Avoid phone numbers or links sent in unsolicited messages.
- State the exact issue. Say whether you need a higher per-transaction amount, a higher daily aggregate, a higher transaction count, or clarification of a temporary restriction.
- Provide payment context. Give the date and time, amount, recipient type, selected account, and exact error text. Mention if the payment is for tax, a hospital, an educational institution, an IPO, Retail Direct Scheme, or another special category.
- Ask which rule applies. Request confirmation that the restriction is a bank internal policy, an NPCI ceiling, a category or merchant rule, or a temporary account hold.
- Ask whether a review is available. If it is a bank-set cap, ask what verification or account requirements apply and whether the bank can change the cap for your account.
- Record the case details. Save the complaint or service-request number and the bank’s stated limit and effective date.
Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN, full password, or remote-access code to support staff. A legitimate limit review should not require you to reveal authentication secrets.

Why category-specific ceilings do not automatically help
NPCI and RBI have approved higher ceilings for specific uses, but the purpose of the payment matters. A ₹5 lakh tax-payment ceiling does not turn a regular person-to-person transfer into a ₹5 lakh transfer. Similarly, a hospital or educational-institution ceiling depends on the payment being routed to an eligible recipient.
The 28 August 2025 NPCI circular also ties enhanced limits in covered categories to verified merchant status. A merchant may therefore need to be correctly classified and verified before the higher amount is accepted. Ask the bank or merchant whether that qualification is present rather than repeatedly retrying the same payment.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Confusing the app with the account provider: the UPI app may be operated by a different company from the bank holding the funds. Ask the funding bank about account-level restrictions.
- Quoting a headline maximum: NPCI’s ordinary ceiling, an RBI category decision, and one bank’s daily figure have different scopes. Give the bank the payment category and account details.
- Retrying without recording the error: repeated attempts make it harder to explain whether the issue was amount, count, daily total, or a temporary hold.
- Assuming a special category from the payment description: calling a transfer “tax” does not make it a tax-category payment. The route, recipient classification, and participating entities must qualify.
- Sharing credentials to remove a limit: no support representative should need your UPI PIN or one-time password to explain a cap.
Bank-specific example: checking SBI limits and disputes
SBI publishes a ₹1 lakh-per-day UPI figure on its customer-care page, last updated 4 February 2025. That number describes SBI’s published policy and should not be presented as the limit for another bank.

Those labels are an example of one bank’s interface, not a standard UPI navigation path. For current SBI instructions, use SBI UPI customer care and its UPI FAQ.
Temporary limits after setting or resetting a UPI PIN
A newly set or reset PIN can trigger a security cooling period that is separate from your normal daily limit. SBI YONO describes a first-24-hour ₹5,000 restriction for Android users after setting or resetting a UPI PIN and a different first-five-day rule for iOS users. These are SBI-specific instructions published on 27 June 2025, not a universal rule for every bank or operating system. Check the current terms in SBI YONO’s guidance before relying on them.
If a payment fails during a cooling period, waiting or following the bank’s verification process is the remedy. Requesting a permanent limit increase will not normally bypass a temporary security control.

UPI Circle is not a way to raise your ordinary account limit
UPI Circle is a delegated-authorisation feature with its own limits and permissions. A secondary user can be authorised to make payments under the primary user’s arrangement, but those delegated-device limits are not an increase to the account holder’s ordinary UPI ceiling. Review the feature’s current rules on NPCI’s UPI Circle page before treating it as a payment option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractical examples
An ordinary person-to-person transfer is declined at a high amount
Check the selected account’s per-transaction cap first. The ordinary NPCI ceiling is ₹1 lakh, but your bank may set a lower amount. If the requested payment is above the ordinary ceiling, a bank review cannot make it an ordinary-payment transaction above that network limit.
A second or third payment fails even though each is small
Add the day’s successful payments and count attempts. The remaining amount or transaction count may be exhausted. Give the bank the timestamps and exact error text so it can check the account-level ledger.
A tax payment is rejected above the ordinary ceiling
Confirm that the recipient is the correct tax-payment channel and that the merchant or biller is eligible. RBI’s ₹5 lakh tax-payment policy and NPCI’s category rules do not apply to an unrelated transfer merely because the amount is being described as a tax payment.
A payment fails immediately after a PIN reset
Check for a cooling-period message and the bank’s device-specific rule. Do not keep changing the PIN or sharing credentials with anyone who promises to remove the restriction.

What to have ready before contacting the bank
- The bank account and UPI app used.
- Payment amount, date, time, recipient and payment category.
- Exact error message and a transaction reference, if available.
- Successful payments already made during the relevant period.
- Date of any recent PIN change, device change, account-linking event or security alert.
- Your question stated as a limit type: per transaction, daily amount, transaction count, category eligibility or temporary hold.
Bottom line
Check the funding bank’s UPI settings and history first, then confirm the live figures with that bank. Treat NPCI and RBI numbers as category-specific ceilings, not as a guaranteed personal allowance. A bank may review an internal cap, but only the bank can confirm whether your account qualifies for a higher limit and what verification is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the normal UPI transaction limit?
NPCI’s FAQ gives ₹1 lakh per transaction for ordinary UPI payments, but your bank can set a lower internal cap. Some categories have higher ceilings.
Can I increase my UPI limit from the app?
Not universally. If the restriction is a bank-set internal cap, ask the account-holding bank whether it accepts a review. A network ceiling, category rule, or temporary security hold cannot be removed through a generic settings toggle.
Why did a small UPI payment fail after earlier payments?
You may have reached the aggregate daily amount or transaction-count limit. Check successful payments, timestamps, and the exact error, then ask the bank for the remaining amount and count.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a ₹5 lakh tax limit apply to every UPI transfer?
No. The higher ceiling applies to qualifying tax-payment routes and eligible recipients. It does not convert an ordinary person-to-person transfer into a tax-category payment.
What should I do after resetting my UPI PIN?
Check your bank’s cooling-period rules. SBI, for example, publishes a first-24-hour ₹5,000 restriction for Android users and a different first-five-day rule for iOS users; those instructions are bank-specific.
Which bank should I contact about a UPI limit?
Contact the bank holding the account selected as the source of funds. The UPI app may be a separate provider, but the account bank controls its internal cap and security restrictions.
Can UPI Circle raise my personal UPI limit?
No. UPI Circle is a delegated-authorisation feature with separate permissions and limits; it does not increase the account holder’s ordinary UPI ceiling.
Is there a standard form or approval time for a higher limit?
No universal form, guaranteed approval, or fixed turnaround time is established. Each bank decides whether and how to review its internal limit.
The Bottom Line
Check the funding bank’s live UPI limits, identify whether the restriction is amount, count, category or temporary, and ask that bank for a review only when it controls the cap.
