To check an existing GST charge in India, start with the invoice description and its HSN (for goods) or SAC (for services) code. Search that code or a precise description in the official CBIC GST rate finder, open the complete schedule entry, and then compare its applicable rate components and conditions with the invoice. Finally, recalculate the tax on the invoice’s taxable value and check the supplier, GSTIN, place of supply, and any reverse-charge notation.
A product’s everyday name is not always enough to determine its GST treatment. Composition, material, intended use, processing, service category, transaction date, exemptions, and other entry conditions can change the classification. The official schedule—not a search snippet, calculator, or an old invoice—is the controlling reference for the supply you are checking.
The five-minute method
- Read the invoice. Note the exact description, quantity, taxable value, HSN/SAC code, GST rate, CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, and any cess. Record the invoice date and supplier GSTIN.
- Identify the supply. Decide whether it is goods or a service, and collect details that affect classification: material or composition, model or specification, use, packaging, processing, and whether the transaction is intra-state or inter-state.
- Search an official reference. Use the CBIC GST Rate Finder by description or HSN/SAC. You can also use the GST portal’s HSN search facility, which CBIC describes in its HSN/SAC guidance.
- Open the full schedule entry. Confirm the heading, subheading, description, CGST and SGST/UTGST columns, IGST column, cess, exemptions, footnotes, and conditions in the CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates schedules.
- Recalculate and compare. Apply the combined rate to the invoice’s taxable value, check whether the component split is correct, and verify the amount charged. If anything remains unclear, ask the supplier for the classification and rate basis before treating the invoice as wrong.
This sequence checks both parts of the problem: whether the supply is in the right classification and whether the supplier calculated the tax correctly after choosing that classification.

Copy the invoice description exactly
Do not search only for a short retail name such as “filter,” “fabric,” “consulting,” or “repair.” Copy the detailed line description, including brand-independent technical facts, size, capacity, material, whether the item is new or used, and what the service actually includes. Keep the product catalogue, quotation, purchase order, or service agreement nearby if the invoice is vague.

Find the HSN or SAC code
HSN is the Harmonized System of Nomenclature code used for goods. SAC is the Services Accounting Code used for services. The code may appear beside each line item or in a separate column. Some invoices show a shorter heading while the supplier’s accounting system stores a more detailed subheading. Record every digit shown; a broad chapter number is not equivalent to a complete tariff entry.
If no code appears, or the code does not match the description, do not silently choose a code from a random online list. Use the description and the underlying facts to investigate the likely heading, then ask the supplier to explain its classification. The CBIC GST Rates FAQs illustrate why a familiar product name can lead to different headings.
Record transaction facts
- Invoice date and, where relevant, the date of supply or receipt of advance.
- Supplier’s legal name and GSTIN; for a registered recipient, record the recipient GSTIN too.
- Delivery or service location and the stated place of supply.
- Whether the invoice says intra-state, inter-state, export, import, or reverse charge.
- Taxable value before GST, discounts, freight or other charges included in the tax base, and any separate cess.
These details matter because a rate can change by effective date, and the tax component depends on the nature and location of the transaction.
How to use the official CBIC rate finder
Search by HSN/SAC when the code is credible
CBIC’s 2017 GST Rate Finder press release describes searching by description or by HSN chapter or section and checking the rate charged. Enter the complete HSN or SAC from the invoice if it is plausible. If the finder returns several subheadings, open each candidate and compare its full wording with the actual supply.
Search by description when the code is missing or doubtful
Use distinctive terms from the description rather than a generic consumer name. For goods, include composition, function, and technical characteristics. For services, include the activity performed and the recipient or business context where the description distinguishes categories. Treat the results as candidates: a text match does not prove that the entry applies.

Use the GST portal HSN search as a second official route
CBIC also points to the GST portal’s HSN search facility in its 2021 HSN/SAC press release. It can help locate a heading when you know only the code or a description. Still open the corresponding rate schedule and read its conditions. A search tool helps you find an entry; it does not replace classification analysis.
How to read a rate-schedule entry correctly
Match the complete description
Read the heading, subheading, tariff item, and explanatory wording together. Look for qualifiers such as “other,” “parts,” “for household use,” “of specified material,” or “excluding.” A product can resemble an entry while failing one of its conditions. Compare the actual composition, use, processing, and presentation with the text of the entry.

A schedule can show separate CGST and SGST/UTGST rates and a separate IGST rate. The two domestic components usually add to the total GST for an intra-state supply; IGST is the inter-state component. Do not treat a 9% CGST cell as a 9% total rate, and do not add IGST to CGST and SGST on the same ordinary supply. Check whether a cess column also applies.
| What you see | What it generally represents | What to compare on the invoice |
|---|---|---|
| CGST | Central component for an intra-state supply | CGST percentage and amount |
| SGST or UTGST | State or Union Territory component for an intra-state supply | SGST/UTGST percentage and amount |
| IGST | Integrated component for an inter-state supply and certain other specified transactions | IGST percentage and amount |
| Cess | An additional levy listed for particular goods or conditions | Cess rate and amount, if the entry requires it |
Read footnotes, exemptions, and conditions
Many entries are conditional. The schedule may limit a concession by value, recipient, use, packaging, registration status, or another fact. An exemption can apply only when every stated condition is met. Record the relevant footnote with the rate you found; do not copy a percentage while ignoring the text that qualifies it.
Check the effective date
Rates and classifications can change through notifications. Compare the schedule and applicable notification with the date of the supply, not merely the date you happen to search. The schedule page’s search-index crawl predates the date of this article, so it is a starting point for locating entries, not proof that a rate has never changed. For an old invoice, check the rate that was effective on that transaction date.

How to compare the invoice rate and tax amount
Calculate the expected tax
Use this formula for each taxable line or tax category:
Tax amount = taxable value × applicable tax rate ÷ 100
For an intra-state supply, calculate the total GST first and then verify the CGST and SGST/UTGST split shown on the invoice. For an inter-state supply, calculate the IGST instead. Round only as permitted by the invoice and accounting rules; compare the supplier’s line-level rounding with the total.
| Illustrative calculation | Working | Expected tax |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable value ₹10,000; total GST 18%; intra-state | ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800 total, normally split into 9% CGST and 9% SGST/UTGST | ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST/UTGST |
| Taxable value ₹10,000; IGST 18%; inter-state | ₹10,000 × 18% | ₹1,800 IGST |
These are arithmetic examples, not a determination that the underlying supply is taxed at 18%. The applicable percentage must come from the correctly matched, current schedule entry.
Check taxable value before checking the percentage
An invoice can show the right rate but the wrong tax because the taxable base is wrong. Compare line values, discounts, freight, packing, incidental charges, and any other amounts included or excluded under the invoice rules. Recalculate each tax category separately when different lines have different rates.

Check the component and amount together
- Confirm that the invoice uses CGST plus SGST/UTGST for the stated intra-state supply, or IGST for the stated inter-state supply.
- Confirm that the two domestic percentages add to the schedule’s combined rate.
- Confirm that the rupee amounts equal the taxable value multiplied by the displayed percentages, allowing for legitimate rounding.
- Check any cess separately; it is not automatically part of the GST percentage.
- Make sure exempt, nil-rated, or non-GST lines are not included in the taxable subtotal.
Why the product name alone can mislead you
CBIC’s saree and dhoti examples
The CBIC GST Rates FAQs explain that sarees and dhotis can fall under different headings depending on constituent fibre and other properties. Two items sold under the same everyday name may therefore require different classification analysis. When a textile invoice says only “saree,” obtain the fibre or material details and compare the relevant headings rather than assuming one universal rate.
Water purifier example
The same FAQ lists filters or water purifiers under heading 8421 at 18%. This is an example of how CBIC presents a classification and rate, not a blanket answer for every device marketed as a purifier. Confirm that the item is actually covered by heading 8421 and check the current schedule and conditions for the transaction date.
Services need the same discipline
A service label such as “support,” “consulting,” or “maintenance” can cover different activities. Identify what was delivered, whether it is bundled with goods, and any facts that distinguish one SAC entry from another. Ask for the supplier’s SAC and written basis when the invoice description is too broad to test.
Invoice fields to verify
CBIC’s invoice guidance, including Tax Invoice and other such instruments in GST and the Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes rules, describes the particulars that may be required. The fields that apply can vary with the transaction, so use the relevant rule rather than a one-size-fits-all checklist.

- Signature or authorized authentication and other transaction-specific particulars.
Missing information does not automatically prove that the rate is wrong, but it makes the charge harder to validate. Ask the supplier to correct or explain a material omission.

What to do when the rate or classification looks wrong
First, rule out an arithmetic or location mistake
- Recheck the taxable value and discounts.
- Confirm whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state from the place-of-supply particulars.
- Check whether the invoice has applied CGST and SGST/UTGST separately or used IGST.
- Look for a cess, exemption, or condition that changes the result.
- Verify that you searched the rate effective on the supply date.
Then request the supplier’s basis
Send the supplier the invoice number, line description, HSN/SAC shown, and the specific schedule entry you believe may apply. Ask for the classification, notification or schedule reference, effective date, and calculation used. Keep the original invoice, purchase order, delivery record, correspondence, and your calculation together. Do not alter an invoice yourself.
Escalate a material dispute carefully
If the supplier cannot resolve a significant discrepancy, obtain advice from a qualified Indian tax professional or the relevant tax authority. The appropriate route depends on facts such as your role, registration status, place of supply, and whether the issue is classification, collection, or documentation. There is no single universal complaint channel or response time that can safely be promised for every GST overcharge.
A reusable GST-check worksheet
| Field | Your entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice number and date | Record exactly | Links the calculation to the transaction and effective date |
| Description and specifications | Copy full wording | Supports classification beyond the everyday product name |
| HSN/SAC | Record every digit | Provides the starting point for the official lookup |
| Taxable value | Before GST | Base for recalculating tax |
| Schedule entry | Heading, description, conditions | Shows why the rate applies |
| Effective date | Date applicable to supply | Rates and rules can change |
| Tax components | CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, cess | Prevents component-versus-total errors |
| Supplier and GSTIN | As printed and verified against the invoice | Connects the charge to the registered supplier |
| Place of supply and reverse charge | As stated where relevant | Can determine the component and documentation |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a shopping-site percentage. Retail listings and old articles can be outdated or omit conditions. Use the official CBIC schedule.
- Searching only a colloquial name. Add composition, function, and technical details.
- Copying the first search result. Open the full entry and compare every condition.
- Calling CGST the total GST. Add the applicable components or use IGST as appropriate.
- Ignoring the supply date. A later schedule may not apply to an earlier invoice.
- Assuming an HSN proves classification. An invoice code can be entered incorrectly; test it against the actual supply.
- Comparing only the percentage. Recalculate the rupee amount from the taxable value.
- Overlooking reverse charge or place of supply. These particulars affect who accounts for tax and which component appears.
- Changing records before resolving the issue. Preserve the original invoice and obtain a credit note or corrected document through the supplier’s proper process if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I determine GST from the product name alone?
Not reliably. Use the full description, composition or use, HSN/SAC, and the complete schedule entry. CBIC’s saree examples show that constituent fibre and other properties can change the heading.
Should I add CGST and SGST to IGST?
No. For the same ordinary supply, verify either the CGST-plus-SGST/UTGST split for an intra-state transaction or IGST for an inter-state transaction. Check the schedule and place-of-supply particulars.
What should I do if the supplier used the wrong HSN or rate?
Preserve the invoice and supporting records, ask the supplier for the classification and rate basis, and request a proper correction if necessary. For a material dispute, consult a qualified Indian tax professional or the relevant tax authority.
