To check a viral image or video, verify two separate questions: what the pixels or frames show and what the post claims about them. Save the exact post, reverse-search the image or several video frames, trace the earliest credible appearance, check existing fact-checks, compare visible clues with independent evidence, and treat metadata or AI labels as leads rather than proof.
This process can show that a real recording is old, filmed elsewhere, or paired with a false explanation. It may not identify the original camera or exact capture date. Report only what the evidence establishes, and label unresolved context as unverified.
Why a real image can still carry false information
“Fake” and “misleading” are different findings. A manipulated image may not depict a real event at all. A genuine photograph or video can be reposted with the wrong year, country, event, or caption. Reverse-search results often address whether the same visual appeared earlier; they do not automatically establish who recorded it or whether the new description is accurate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep four questions separate while investigating:
- What is visible? Describe people, objects, signs, landmarks, weather, language, and edits without repeating the caption as fact.
- Where and when was it recorded? Look for evidence of location and timing, not just a posting date.
- Where did this file or sequence appear before? An earlier indexed copy is a useful lead, not necessarily the original.
- Does the caption fit the evidence? A source can be genuine while the claim attached to it is wrong.
Social posts commonly omit the information needed to answer all four. A careful result can therefore be “the scene is confirmed in this place, but the exact recording date is unknown” rather than a forced true-or-false verdict.

A quick triage before you share
When a post is moving quickly, use this short sequence before forwarding it:
- Copy the exact wording, account name, platform, visible posting date, and stated location.
- Save the original post URL and the highest-quality file you can obtain without cropping, recompressing, or adding marks.
- Reverse-search the still image or clear frames from different moments of the video.
- Open the most promising earlier results and compare their captions, dates, and publishers.
- Search the claim in Google Fact Check Explorer and read any matching article, rather than relying on a result label.
- Check signs, landmarks, road markings, language, weather, shadows, clothing, and event details against independent material.
- Record what is confirmed, what is likely, and what remains unknown before writing or sharing a conclusion.
A search that returns nothing is not evidence that the media is new. It may be poorly indexed, altered, private, or too recent for a match to exist.
Step 1: Preserve the claim and the original media
Capture the claim exactly
Write down the caption, hashtags, quoted statements, account, platform, visible upload time, and claimed place. Save a screenshot as well as the post URL because captions and accounts can change. Keep the claim in one note and your own description of what can be seen in another; this prevents the wording from steering your observation.
Keep the best available copy
Download or save the highest-resolution file available through the platform’s normal controls. Do not crop out signs, remove watermarks, add subtitles, or convert the file before analysis. If you must create a frame or crop for searching, retain the untouched original and label every derivative copy.
A platform’s displayed upload time is the time of that upload, not proof of when or where the camera captured the scene. The original poster may also be a re-uploader.
Step 2: Reverse-search still images and video frames
For a photograph
Use a reverse-image search by uploading the file or submitting its image URL. Google News Initiative describes this as a quick first verification step. Compare visual matches, page captions, publisher names, and publication dates. Search a full image and then distinctive details such as a sign or landmark if the first attempt is unhelpful.

For a video
Extract several sharp still frames from different points: an opening scene, a frame with a sign or building, and a frame showing the wider setting. Search each frame separately. A single frame may be blurred, mirrored, or too generic; a set of frames increases the chance of finding an earlier upload and can reveal that a clip has been assembled from unrelated material.
Bellingcat’s documented example demonstrates the method. Investigators searched a frame from a viral TikTok said to show panic buying in Haarlem, found an older YouTube upload titled ALDI Sonderverkauf in Kiel, and traced that video to 2011. A visible sign and other scene details placed it in Kiel, Germany, rather than Haarlem in the Netherlands. The example shows how frame searching can correct a caption; it is not a guarantee that every original will be found.
Use more than one search service when necessary
Different indexes contain different sites and image variants. If the first service returns no useful match, try another and search several frames or crops. Record the search date and the exact match you examined so another person can reproduce your work.
Step 3: Trace the earliest credible appearance
Open pages instead of trusting snippets
Search-result snippets can display a later page’s text beside an older-looking thumbnail. Open each candidate and inspect the publisher, page date, caption, surrounding article, and whether the page is simply copying another post. A page that embeds the same social video may be newer than the account that first published it.
Use About this image as a history clue
Google’s About this image can show when an image or similar images were first indexed, sites that use it, and available metadata. “First indexed” means the search system encountered that version by that time; it is not automatically the camera date, the first publication date, or proof of the original creator. Availability and displayed fields can vary by geography, account, and interface.
Assess source quality
Give more weight to an identifiable publisher with a contemporaneous caption, location details, and a transparent correction history than to an anonymous repost. An earlier page is a lead until you establish that it contains the same visual, not a look-alike, and that its date is credible.

Step 4: Check existing fact-checks
Search the exact claim wording and submit the image to Google Fact Check Explorer. Read the linked fact check in full. Check whether it assessed the same crop, edit, language version, and claim, and note the evidence the fact-checker used.
Explorer relies on eligible fact checks that carry ClaimReview markup and meet Google’s conditions. Its coverage is therefore incomplete by design. No result does not show that a claim is true, new, or never examined; it only means that Explorer found no eligible matching entry.
Step 5: Test the claimed place and time
Geolocate visible details
Compare landmarks, building shapes, street furniture, road markings, signs, language, and distinctive terrain with maps, reliable local reporting, or official imagery. A sign can be more decisive than a broad visual resemblance, but confirm that it belongs to the same scene and has not been digitally inserted.
Check whether the date fits
Look at weather, shadows, vegetation, clothing, holiday decorations, construction work, vehicle models, and event-specific objects. Compare those clues with contemporaneous weather records, official notices, or reporting from the claimed area. A post date, file creation date, and recording date can all differ.
Seek independent corroboration
Find unrelated photographs, videos, eyewitness accounts, emergency notices, or local-news coverage that describe the same event from another angle. Multiple independent sources are stronger than many accounts repeating one original post. The Associated Press describes checking timing and location alongside landmarks, signage, weather, and language.
Step 6: Treat metadata and AI labels as clues
What metadata can and cannot tell you
Some files contain EXIF fields such as a camera model, capture time, or GPS position. Social platforms often strip these fields, and a downloaded file may have been edited or re-exported. A missing field is not evidence of deception, while a populated field is not proof that it is genuine.

Google warns that credit and digital-source-type metadata can be changed by editing or generation tools. Treat a provenance label, content credential, or AI indicator in the same way: useful for deciding what to investigate next, never a standalone authentication result.

Examine edges, reflections, repeated textures, lighting, shadows, lip movement, and abrupt audio changes, but do not declare an edit from one odd-looking pixel. Compare the file with earlier versions and inspect video frame by frame for cuts, duplicated sequences, missing audio, or material combined from different events. Professional verification teams, including AP’s, combine this analysis with source tracing and corroboration.
Step 7: Verify the person or account behind the post
Inspect the account’s older posts, profile history, location claims, and links to original files. A verified badge, large follower count, or confident caption does not establish authorship. Ask whether the account was present at the claimed event, whether it credits a filmer, and whether the same account has changed its explanation.
If a plausible original filmer or publisher is identified, compare the earliest available upload with later edits and captions. Professional journalists may contact that person directly; readers should avoid pressuring private individuals and should not expose personal information merely to win an online argument.

| Tool type | Input | Useful for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse-image search | Uploaded image or image URL; extracted video frame | Finding similar or earlier appearances and alternate captions | Results depend on index coverage; an earlier result is not automatically the original |
| Google About this image | An image in supported Google Search experiences | Index history, other-site uses, and available metadata | “First indexed” is a search-system date, and fields or availability can vary |
| Google Fact Check Explorer | Claim wording or image search | Locating published fact checks | Only eligible ClaimReview-marked checks are included; no result is not a clean bill of health |
| AP Verify | Newsroom verification inputs, including images, video, and social content | A professional dashboard combining reverse image search, frame-by-frame analysis, social listening, and AI-assisted functions | AP announced it in 2025 for newsrooms; the evidence here establishes neither consumer access nor pricing |

What the wider numbers imply
Google’s May 2023 post attributed a Poynter survey from 2022 in which 62% of people said they encountered misinformation daily or weekly. That is a reported survey figure, not a universal rate for every population.
Google News Initiative material says Google and several fact-checking organizations reviewed more than 130,000 fact checks dating back to 1995. In that reviewed corpus, 80% involved photos or video. The same review reported that video represented nearly half—48%—of misinformation claims in the last three years it covered; the source does not identify those calendar years, so the figure should not be converted into specific dates.
Google also reported that more than 70% of beta users said image features helped reduce their investigation time. That is a self-reported beta-user result, not an independent controlled evaluation or a guarantee of accuracy.

How to write the final finding
Separate established facts from inferences
Write one sentence for each material finding: where the visual appeared earlier, what location is supported, what date is supported, and whether the caption matches. Attribute a lead to the tool that surfaced it, then explain the evidence you independently checked.
Use calibrated language
- Confirmed: “The same video appears in a 2011 upload titled …, and the sign and location match Kiel.”
- Likely: “The weather and landmarks are consistent with the claimed location, but no original upload was found.”
- Unverified: “Available searches do not establish when or where this recording was made.”
- False context: “The scene is real, but the documented earlier appearance predates the event named in the post.”
Do not turn “no match found” into “new,” and do not turn a metadata anomaly into “AI-generated.” If sources conflict, describe the conflict and identify the missing evidence instead of choosing the most dramatic explanation.
When professional newsroom tools are relevant
AP announced AP Verify in 2025 as a web-based newsroom dashboard that brings together reverse image search, frame-by-frame video analysis, social listening, and AI-assisted functions. AP senior vice president and chief technology officer Gianluca D’Aniello described it this way: “AP Verify equips journalists with the essential tools they need to assess online content quickly and accurately all in one place – whether it’s identifying the source of a photo, analyzing video or vetting text.”
That service is a professional lead, not a requirement for ordinary readers. The available information does not establish its price, consumer suitability, or availability in every geography. Individuals can apply the same principles with public search, fact-checking, and independent corroboration.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Believing the first reverse-search result: Open multiple results and establish which is genuinely earlier and which is a repost.
- Searching only one video frame: Use clear frames from different moments and include signs, buildings, or other distinctive details.
- Equating a post date with a recording date: Treat upload, file, and capture dates as separate claims.
- Assuming missing metadata proves fabrication: Platforms can remove metadata during upload.
- Using an AI detector as a verdict: Combine any label with source history, visual inspection, and corroboration.
- Accepting a fact-check headline without reading it: Confirm that the article examined the same version and exact claim.
- Confusing popularity with provenance: A widely copied post can still be far removed from the original filmer.
- Overstating a partial result: Say exactly which part is established and leave the rest unverified.
A reusable verification record
Keep a compact log so someone else can audit the conclusion:
- Exact claim, account, platform, post URL, and visible post date
- Original file name, format, resolution, and any transformations made for searching
- Search services used, dates searched, and frames or crops submitted
- Earlier appearances with publisher, page date, caption, and relevant quotations
- Fact-check results and the precise claim each one assessed
- Location and timing clues, with independent sources that corroborate or contradict them
- Metadata or provenance fields observed, noting that they may be absent or altered
- Final wording divided into confirmed, likely, and unverified points
This record preserves the distinction between a visual match and proof of origin—the distinction that prevents a genuine image from being used to support a false story.
