In the United States, the quickest way to check local air quality is to enter your ZIP code or city at AirNow.gov or use the free AirNow mobile app. Read the current AQI, note the primary pollutant, and follow the activity guidance shown with it. If wildfire smoke is present, switch to the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, which provides a more detailed PM2.5 and sensor view. Check the forecast when you are deciding whether to exercise, commute, work outdoors, or change plans later in the day.
Start with an official local reading
AirNow is the U.S. government’s public air-quality service. Its website accepts a ZIP code, city, or state and returns the reporting area with current AQI information. The AirNow mobile app can display the current AQI for your local area or another location and lets you save multiple locations for quick reference. AirNow describes the app this way: “The app automatically displays the current AQI (Air Quality Index) for your local area or any area you wish to check, and allows you to store multiple areas for quick reference.”
These tools are free public information services. They are the best starting point for a decision about outdoor activity because they combine official monitoring data, pollutant identification, health guidance, and forecasts in one place.

Search the website
- Open AirNow.gov.
- Enter your ZIP code, city, or state in the location search.
- Select the reporting area that matches where you are.
- Read the current AQI category, the number, and the primary pollutant.
- Review the activity guidance shown for that AQI level and pollutant.
A city search may take you to the nearest city with available data. If no reporting city with data is within 50 miles, AirNow says the search goes to a state page listing cities that do have data. That result is useful for regional context, but it is not a measurement taken at every street, building, or home.

Use the app for places you check often
The app is useful if you regularly monitor a home, workplace, school, or travel destination. Add each location to the saved list, then open the location you need before going outside. A saved location is still a reporting-area result; it should not be interpreted as a sensor installed at your exact address.
Understand what the AQI number means
The U.S. AQI is a communication scale, not a complete description of every pollutant or every person’s risk. AirNow’s current displayed bands are:
| AQI | Category |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good |
| 51–100 | Moderate |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy |
| 301 and above | Hazardous |
Do not stop at the color or number. AirNow’s regular dial reports ozone or particle pollution, whichever currently has the highest AQI. The primary pollutant tells you what is driving the displayed result, while the accompanying guidance explains how to adjust activity. Someone who is sensitive to a pollutant should pay attention to that pollutant even when another value is producing the headline AQI.
Use the category as a decision prompt
- Check the guidance for the displayed category. The recommendations are written for the general population and for people who may be more sensitive.
- Identify the pollutant. Ozone and particle pollution can lead to different precautions, and the pollutant can change over the course of a day.
- Consider your own sensitivity. Do not treat one AQI value as a universal “safe” cutoff for every person.
- Look ahead when timing matters. A current value describes recent conditions; a forecast helps with a later activity.
Choose the right AirNow view
AirNow offers two especially useful views for a local check. The regular AQI view is the concise answer to “How is the air in my area?” The Fire and Smoke Map is the better tool when smoke or particulate pollution is the question.
| View | Best purpose | Data emphasis | What you can inspect | Time information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirNow AQI lookup and dial | General daily air-quality check | Official reporting monitors selected by state, local, and tribal agencies; ozone or particle pollution with the higher AQI drives the dial | Location-level AQI, primary pollutant, category, and activity guidance | Current conditions and a daily forecast |
| AirNow Fire and Smoke Map | Wildfire smoke and local particle pollution | PM2.5, smoke plumes, permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and crowdsourced or low-cost sensors | Clickable nearby markers, smoke trends, protective steps, and smoke outlooks where available | Current conditions, trends, and outlooks where available |
| Indoor PM2.5 monitor | Additional context inside one residence | A reading from the device’s location indoors | Home-level particulate readings | Depends on the device and its data display |
Neither public view guarantees a measurement at your exact address. The map areas are approximate, and the meaning of a nearby marker depends on the instrument and data source behind it.

How to check wildfire smoke with the Fire and Smoke Map
AirNow says, “Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map when wildfire smoke is affecting your air quality.” The map focuses on PM2.5, the fine-particle pollutant that is central to smoke conditions, rather than presenting only the single headline value from the regular dial.
- Open the Fire and Smoke Map from AirNow.gov.
- Pan or search to your area and zoom in until nearby markers are visible.
- Open the marker closest to your home, workplace, or planned activity.
- Check whether the marker represents a permanent official monitor, a temporary monitor, or a low-cost/crowdsourced sensor.
- Compare the current reading with the map’s trend information and smoke-plume display.
- Read the protective steps and any smoke outlook available for your area.
The map can show more local detail than the standard AQI dial because it includes additional sensor types. That extra detail does not mean every marker is directly comparable. Devices, placement, calibration, and data pathways differ, so nearby readings can diverge without one source being universally “the accurate one.” Use the marker type and the surrounding pattern to understand what you are seeing.

AirNow notes that the regular dial may not reflect smoke well when there is no nearby PM2.5 monitor or when another pollutant has the higher AQI. For example, a location can have visible or transported smoke while the headline dial is being driven by ozone or by a monitor farther away. In that situation, open the Fire and Smoke Map and inspect PM2.5 markers and smoke information instead of relying on the color alone.
Use forecasts when you are planning ahead
The current AQI and the forecast answer different questions. The current view is based on recent measurements processed into an AQI. The forecast is a prediction for the day and is the more relevant view when you are deciding about an afternoon game, a run, outdoor work, or travel later.
AirNow describes NowCasts as algorithms that relate hourly monitor readings to AQI. That processing helps turn changing hourly measurements into a current, readable condition. It does not turn a forecast into a direct measurement of your home.

A simple planning routine
- Check the current AQI before you leave.
- Read the primary pollutant and the activity guidance.
- Open the forecast for the time period when you expect to be outdoors.
- If smoke is involved, compare the forecast with the Fire and Smoke Map’s current PM2.5 and smoke outlook information.
- Recheck close to the activity if conditions are changing quickly.
A forecast can support a plan to move an activity indoors, shorten the time outside, or choose another time, but it cannot guarantee what every block will measure.
Why a nearby air-quality number can differ from your experience
“Near me” is a reporting concept, not a promise that a monitor is at your address. AirNow’s regular dial uses monitors selected by state, local, and tribal agencies. The service then presents a location-level summary for the reporting area. A city result can therefore represent conditions across a broader area than one neighborhood.
The search fallback changes the geographic precision
If AirNow finds a reporting city, the result is tied to that city’s available data. If no such city is within 50 miles, the search leads to a state page listing cities that have data. That fallback is valuable when no close station exists, but it should prompt extra caution: the state-page city may be useful for regional direction without describing the air at your particular location.
The pollutant driving the dial may not be the pollutant you notice
The standard AQI dial displays whichever of ozone or particle pollution currently has the higher AQI. During smoke, PM2.5 is usually the key question, yet the dial can be influenced by the monitor network and by which pollutant has the higher calculated value. Always read the primary-pollutant label and use the smoke map when smoke is the concern.
Different sensors produce different readings
The Fire and Smoke Map combines permanent monitors, temporary monitors, and crowdsourced or low-cost sensors with other smoke information. These sources can show different numbers because they use different devices and data pathways. The public sources do not establish a universal accuracy ranking among them. Treat the map as a way to see local patterns and additional context, not as proof that one marker measures your exact indoor or outdoor exposure.

Should you buy an indoor air-quality monitor?
You do not need to purchase a device to answer the basic question of whether outdoor air quality is currently elevated. The AirNow website, app, and Fire and Smoke Map provide that public information.
An indoor PM2.5 monitor can add home-level context, especially if you want to see how indoor conditions change when windows are closed, filtration is running, or smoke is present outside. It measures at the residence rather than at a regional reporting station, so it answers a different question. The available information does not establish a consumer-model accuracy comparison or support a particular product recommendation. If you use one, compare its trend with official outdoor information rather than treating a single reading as a definitive health threshold.
How to turn the reading into an outdoor decision
Use a short checklist instead of making a decision from the AQI color alone:
- Where are you going? A regional reporting result may not represent a specific street or building.
- What is the primary pollutant? Read the pollutant label before interpreting the number.
- Who is going outside? Follow the guidance for sensitive groups when it applies.
- How long will the activity last? Use the forecast and current trend when timing matters.
- Is wildfire smoke involved? Open the Fire and Smoke Map and inspect PM2.5 markers.
- Is the condition changing? Recheck the service near the activity rather than relying on an earlier screenshot or saved result.
The AQI is designed to communicate conditions and recommended precautions. It is not a personal medical assessment, and the same category can call for different choices depending on the pollutant, activity, and person.

If you live outside the United States
The instructions above use U.S. AirNow tools because they are the official service covered here. AirNow says it also provides air-quality data for Canada and Mexico. Readers elsewhere should use the official environmental or public-health service for their country or region, then look for the same core information: a current local reading, the pollutant measured, a category or health scale, and a forecast.

Common problems and fixes
“My ZIP code did not return an exact neighborhood.”
Search by city or state as well. AirNow may send a city search to the nearest reporting city, or to a state list when no reporting city is within 50 miles. Use the returned location as regional context and check the map for other nearby markers.
“The dial says one thing, but I can see smoke.”
Open the Fire and Smoke Map, select nearby PM2.5 markers, and inspect smoke-plume and trend information. The regular dial can fail to reflect smoke well when no nearby PM2.5 monitor is represented or when another pollutant has the higher AQI.

“Two nearby markers show different values.”
Check the source label on each marker. Permanent official monitors, temporary monitors, and low-cost or crowdsourced sensors can produce different readings because their devices and data pathways differ. Look for the broader pattern and the trend rather than selecting one number without context.
“I need to know what the air will be like later.”
Open the forecast instead of relying only on the current AQI. The current view reflects recent processed measurements; the forecast is the service’s prediction for the day.
“I am not sure whether the number is safe for me.”
Read the primary pollutant and the activity guidance, then use the advice for sensitive groups if it applies. There is no single cutoff that describes every person and every pollutant.
Make this your routine
For a normal daily check, use the AirNow ZIP-code or city lookup, read the AQI and primary pollutant, and check the forecast before a planned activity. During wildfire smoke, make the Fire and Smoke Map your primary view so you can inspect PM2.5, nearby sensor types, smoke trends, and available outlooks. Treat every result as a location-based report rather than a guaranteed reading at your exact address, and let the official guidance—not the color alone—drive your decision.
