Check Steam’s server status before changing your PC or network settings. If Steam is operating normally, use the pattern of the failure—one game server or every Steam connection, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, downloads or sign-in—to narrow down whether the cause is your device, router, firewall, or network policy.
Check whether Steam is having a broader outage
Open Steam Support’s network troubleshooting guide and follow its link to Steam Server Status. The status page is a snapshot: check it when the problem occurs, and check again later if Steam reports a service issue. If Steam sites are timing out or a service is unavailable, wait before changing local settings; Steam says a system-wide issue can make its services inaccessible until it is resolved.
This is the first check for errors such as “The Steam Servers are currently unavailable. Please try again later.” or “The Steam Servers are too busy.” Steam’s support article for servers unavailable or too busy also points users to the status page.

“Server Verification Failed” on one server
Try connecting to several other game servers. Steam says that if another server works, the server that produced the error is the likely source of the problem. This is different from a Steam-wide outage or a failure in your internet connection.

All game servers fail
Check Steam’s status, confirm that the client is not set to Offline, and see whether Steam Friends reports a lost connection. Steam’s connection-error guidance covers “Error: Server Verification Failed” and “SECURE CONNECTION FAILED.”
Test the local network path
- Restart the modem and router. This is a basic first test before changing router settings.
- Try Ethernet if your device supports it. Steam recommends testing a direct wired connection when possible. Wi-Fi and powerline connections can fail intermittently because of interference. Steam’s network connectivity guide and router troubleshooting guide explain these checks.
- Isolate the router, if your modem and router are separate. Close Steam, connect the computer directly to the modem to bypass the router, confirm that internet access works, then restart Steam and test again. If Steam works when bypassing the router, its configuration or compatibility is a stronger lead than a Steam-wide problem.
Steam Deck and Wi-Fi checks
On Steam Deck, test another available Wi-Fi band—6 GHz, 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz—if your router and device support it. A wired test may require a compatible USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. For poor download speeds, Steam also suggests checking router channel congestion and reverting custom DNS changes.

Review firewall permissions and other software
A first-time installation or recent Steam client update can leave firewall rules blocking Steam, even if the client worked previously. Steam’s firewall troubleshooting instructions describe removing old permissions for Steam executables so the firewall can request fresh rules, then restarting Steam.
A temporary firewall-off test can help isolate whether the firewall is involved, but treat it only as a diagnostic: turn the firewall back on immediately and correct its rules. Steam does not recommend leaving it disabled. If the issue continues, review potentially interfering software, background applications, and malware or spyware using Steam’s current guidance and the relevant security-software vendor’s instructions; do not remove security software indiscriminately.

Check for blocked ports or network restrictions
Steam publishes separate TCP and UDP port requirements for login, downloads, gameplay, Remote Play, dedicated servers, and Steamworks peer-to-peer and voice features in its required ports article. School, university, business, and proxy networks may block ports Steam needs. On a managed network, ask the network administrator to check its policy. Steam notes that its required ports cannot simply be remapped to HTTP or an arbitrary custom port range.
Fix “The Steam Servers are too busy” or “currently unavailable”
If the status page does not show a broader issue, try a different Download Region that is relatively close to you. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose another region from Download Region, then retry the download.

If changing regions does not help, Steam’s server availability troubleshooting article discusses interfering programs, corrupted Steam files, firewall or antivirus settings, router or internet problems, and possible network outages. Its file-repair directions differ between Windows and macOS and may affect mods or custom content, so follow the current instructions for your operating system rather than deleting Steam files from a generic checklist.

Separate a slow download from a connection failure
A low Steam download-speed figure does not by itself prove that your internet connection is slow. Installation can put substantial load on the CPU and storage, and Steam may throttle a download to match the system’s installation work. Storage write speed—including an SD card’s speed—can also affect how long installation takes. Steam discusses this in its network and download troubleshooting guide. Consider whether the client is downloading, unpacking, or installing before treating the displayed rate as a network diagnosis.

Escalate based on when and where the failure happens
- Only at certain hours: Steam says ISP blocking or traffic shaping is possible. Test at another time; if the pattern persists, contact your ISP.
- Works on another network: The current router, ISP, proxy, or managed-network policy becomes a more likely cause than a general Steam outage.
- Still failing after local checks: Return to Steam’s network guide and the support page for your exact error. The right next step depends on whether the failure affects sign-in, one game server, every server, or downloads.
