Open Steam, select the game in your Library, and note the accumulated hours shown on its title page. You can also open your profile’s Games list to view the same account’s recorded time. Before submitting anything, check the purchase date and compare both facts with Steam’s normal refund test: a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime.
What Steam playtime means for a refund
Steam’s standard refund policy uses two measurements together: when you bought the title and how long the account has played it. For games and software, Valve says a refund is normally available when the request is submitted within 14 days of purchase and the title has been played for less than two hours.
The two-hour figure is a combined total. It includes playtime recorded while you were online, while Steam was operating offline, and while the title was accessed through Steam’s Family or shared-library feature. Offline play does not create a separate allowance or a second counter. The time shown in Steam is therefore the number to compare with the two-hour limit, regardless of how those hours were accumulated.

Meeting both conditions gives you the normal policy path, not a promise that every unusual transaction will be approved automatically. If either condition is outside the standard range, Steam still accepts a request for review, but the usual eligibility guarantee no longer applies.

Fastest ways to see your recorded hours
There are two practical views for checking playtime. The Library page is usually quickest when you already know which game you want to return. The profile Games list is useful when you want to scan several titles or reach the game through your account profile.

Whichever view you use, confirm that you are looking at the account that made the purchase. The number is meaningful only when paired with the correct purchase record and the correct title.
Method 1: Check playtime from the Steam Library
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Choose the game you are considering for a refund.
- On the game’s title page, locate the accumulated playtime shown near the game controls.
- Write down or otherwise record the displayed total before launching the game again.
Recording the number first matters because another session can increase the total Steam evaluates. Do not open the game merely to verify a menu, test a setting, or take a screenshot if you are close to the two-hour threshold. The policy test concerns the total recorded time, not only the time spent in a particular mode or level.

- Open your Steam profile.
- Select the profile’s Games list.
- Find the title you want to check and read the hours recorded for it.
- Record that total without starting the game.
This route is convenient when you are comparing several games in the same account. It is also a useful alternative if you do not immediately see the title in the Library view. The decision is still based on the recorded hours plus the purchase date; the profile list does not replace the purchase-history check.
Why you should stop playing before checking
Steam evaluates the accumulated total at the time of the request. Every additional session can move a title from below two hours to two hours or more. That includes a short launch to inspect settings, a session played without an internet connection, and time played from a shared library.

If the displayed total is close to two hours, treat the number as a hard boundary rather than rounding it down. “Nearly two hours” is not the same as “less than two hours” for the standard policy. Record the displayed value, then proceed to the purchase-date check without opening the title again.
Check the purchase date separately
Playtime alone cannot establish refund eligibility. The standard window is 14 days from the purchase date, so verify when the transaction occurred.

- Identify the purchase date for the specific title, rather than the date it was downloaded, installed, or first launched.
- Count the 14-day window from that purchase date.
- Keep the purchase record available while you submit the support request.
A later installation does not restart the refund period. Likewise, a game with zero recorded hours can still be outside the normal window if the purchase is older than 14 days.
Apply the two-part policy test
After checking both records, compare them with the normal Steam conditions:
- Purchase timing: the request is made within 14 days of purchase.
- Recorded use: the title has less than two hours of total playtime.
- Scope of the total: online, offline, and shared-library time all count toward that total.
Both conditions need to be satisfied for the standard policy route. A title at 1 hour 59 minutes and purchased 10 days ago fits the stated timing and usage limits. A title at 2 hours 1 minute, or one purchased 15 days ago, is outside at least one standard condition even if the other condition is satisfied.

Submit the request through Steam Support
When your checks are complete, use Steam Support at help.steampowered.com.
- Open help.steampowered.com and sign in to the account that owns the purchase.
- Enter the purchase-support flow.
- Select the game or transaction you checked.
- Choose the refund option.
- Briefly describe the reason for the request and submit it.
A concise explanation is sufficient when the purchase is within 14 days and the recorded total is under two hours. Include relevant circumstances when the request falls outside the normal limits, and ask Steam to review it manually rather than presenting the request as automatically eligible.
Valve/Steam Support states: “Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any title that is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than 2 hours (this includes online, offline and shared library playtime).”
What changes when you are over two hours or 14 days
More than two hours played
You can still submit a request through Steam Support, but the normal less-than-two-hour condition is no longer met. Approval is discretionary, so explain the circumstances clearly and do not describe the outcome as guaranteed.
Purchase older than 14 days
The same principle applies when the transaction is outside the 14-day window. Steam may review the request, but the standard timing guarantee no longer applies. State why you are asking for an exception and provide any relevant purchase details.

Both limits exceeded
A request can still be sent for review even when the game has at least two hours of recorded use and the purchase is more than 14 days old. The request is then entirely outside the normal two-part test, so approval depends on Steam’s assessment of the circumstances.
How shared and offline play affect the number
Steam does not provide a separate “offline allowance” for refunds. Time accumulated offline is part of the same total used for the policy check. The same is true when another person accesses a title through a shared library: that use contributes to the shared title’s recorded playtime for the account and library context Steam evaluates.
For that reason, check the displayed total before asking another household member to test the game, and do not assume that offline sessions or shared-library sessions are excluded. The relevant question is the total Steam records for the title, not which person started each session or whether the client had an active connection at the time.

Use Library when speed matters
The Library title page is the shortest path for a single known game. It puts the title and its accumulated hours in one place, so you can record the value and then move to Steam Support.

Use the Games list when you are reviewing several titles
The profile Games list is better for scanning your account. It lets you locate a game through your profile and compare recorded hours across titles before checking the relevant purchase record.

Use both views when a decision is close
If a number appears surprising or is close to two hours, check it in the other available view before submitting. The second view does not create a different playtime total; it is simply a way to confirm that you selected the intended title and account. The purchase date must still be verified separately.
Common mistakes that can jeopardize a request
- Launching the game to check the counter: the extra session can increase the total you are trying to keep below two hours.
- Checking only playtime: a low total does not overcome a purchase older than 14 days.
- Checking only the receipt date: being within 14 days does not overcome two hours or more of recorded playtime under the standard test.
- Ignoring shared-library use: another user’s session can be part of the total Steam evaluates.
- Assuming offline time is exempt: offline use is included in the same counter.
- Submitting from the wrong account: the support flow must be opened while signed in to the account associated with the purchase.
- Writing as though an exception is guaranteed: requests outside the limits can be reviewed, but approval is discretionary.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- Open the game’s Library title page or your profile’s Games list.
- Record the displayed accumulated hours.
- Do not launch the title again while deciding whether to request a refund.
- Find the transaction in purchase history or locate the receipt email.
- Confirm the request is being made within 14 days of that purchase, if you are relying on the standard policy.
- Compare the total with two hours, counting online, offline, and shared-library use.
- Sign in to help.steampowered.com.
- Select the correct purchase and choose the refund option.
- Explain the reason briefly; describe the circumstances in more detail if either standard limit has been exceeded.
EU and UK consumer-rights considerations
Steam’s 14-day and less-than-two-hour rule is its standard voluntary refund policy. Readers in the European Union or United Kingdom may also have statutory consumer rights under local law. Those rights can involve different conditions and exceptions, and the outcome depends on the country, the transaction, the digital-content rules that apply, and the specific circumstances.
Do not assume that the Steam policy summary answers a statutory-rights question. If your request relies on consumer law rather than Steam’s normal policy, describe the issue accurately in the support request and obtain advice appropriate to your jurisdiction.
What to expect from an out-of-policy request
Steam Support can receive a request even when the displayed hours are at least two or the purchase is older than 14 days. Sending the request gives Steam an opportunity to assess the circumstances; it does not convert the request into a standard-policy refund. Avoid changing the playtime record while waiting for review, and retain the purchase details and the explanation you submitted so you can respond consistently if support asks for clarification.

Bottom line for checking before you click “Request”
Use the Library title page for the quickest check or the profile Games list as an alternative. Record the accumulated hours before playing again, verify the purchase date in history or the receipt, and evaluate both against Steam’s 14-day and less-than-two-hour standard. If the figures fall outside those limits, submit through Steam Support only as a discretionary review request, and remember that EU or UK statutory rights may be a separate legal question.
