To check whether a Steam game is likely to run, open that game’s own Steam store page, scroll to System Requirements, select the operating-system section you will use, and compare its minimum and recommended CPU, RAM, graphics, storage, and other listed requirements with your computer’s actual specifications. Treat the result as a screening check: meeting minimum specifications does not guarantee smooth performance.
Why the exact game page matters
Steam does not publish one hardware baseline that applies to every game. Requirements belong to the individual game, and two games in the same genre can demand very different processors, graphics hardware, memory, or storage. Publishers can also revise requirements after release, so always check the current listing for the title you intend to download.
A useful check answers two separate questions:
- Compatibility: Does the computer meet the operating system, processor, memory, graphics, and storage requirements listed for the game?
- Expected experience: If it does, what preset, resolution, and frame-rate target does the publisher associate with that hardware?
The first question is a filter, not a promise. Real performance can vary with graphics drivers, temperatures, and applications running in the background. The second question is meaningful only when the listing supplies those targets, and those targets apply to that particular game rather than to Steam games generally.
1. Open the correct Steam store page
- Open Steam and locate the game you are considering, or use Steam’s store search in a browser.
- Open the store page for the exact title and edition you plan to install. Do not use requirements copied from another game, a sequel, a demo, or a general hardware guide.
- Keep the page available while you inspect your computer’s specifications. You will need to compare several fields rather than just the graphics card.
Requirements are attached to the store listing. A game may publish separate groups for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, so the page is the authoritative place to identify which platform details apply to your installation.

2. Find and select the System Requirements section
Scroll through the game’s store listing until you see System Requirements. On listings that separate platforms, choose the section matching the operating system on which you will run the game. Do not compare a Windows requirement with a macOS or Linux computer, and do not assume that a game supports every platform merely because Steam displays several platform headings on another listing.
Windows requirements
Use the Windows block when the game will run on Windows. Record the operating-system wording exactly, along with the processor, memory, graphics, and storage entries. If the listing specifies DirectX, an architecture, a network connection, or another note, include that in your check.
macOS requirements
Use the macOS block for a Mac installation. Its processor, graphics, operating-system version, and other constraints can differ from the Windows block. A Mac that appears to meet a Windows specification is not automatically covered by the macOS requirement.
SteamOS/Linux requirements
Use the SteamOS/Linux block when that is the intended operating system. Read any architecture, driver, compatibility, or additional-note text shown with the Linux requirements instead of relying only on the numeric hardware entries.
3. Read both minimum and recommended requirements
Most listings divide the information into Minimum and Recommended. Read both rows before deciding. Minimum hardware is generally the publisher’s lower screening point; recommended hardware is the stronger target for the stated experience. A computer can pass the minimum row yet require reduced settings or produce inconsistent frame rates.

| Storage | Compare the game’s listed space with free capacity on the intended installation drive. |
| DirectX, network, architecture, or notes | Check every extra condition shown in the listing; these can be part of the requirement even when they are not hardware components. |
Do not treat a “recommended” row as a guarantee of maximum settings. It is the publisher’s stated target for that listing, and the useful context depends on any accompanying performance notes.

4. Compare each component with your computer
Processor (CPU)
Identify the complete processor model, including its series and generation when shown. Compare that model with the CPU named in the minimum and recommended rows. A processor’s brand name alone is not enough: two processors sold under the same broad family can have different performance and instruction support.

If the listing names a specific architecture or requires a particular operating-system architecture, record that separately. Do not replace a listed CPU requirement with a guess based on clock speed; the page may be relying on differences in cores, instruction sets, or generation.
Memory (RAM)
Check installed system memory against the RAM amount in each row. Meeting the number does not mean all of it is available to the game: the operating system, launchers, browsers, and background applications consume memory too. Close unnecessary applications before judging borderline results, but do not count that as adding physical RAM.
Graphics hardware (GPU)
Identify the exact graphics device and compare it with the listed GPU. Integrated and dedicated graphics can differ substantially even when a computer reports a similar memory figure. If the listing specifies video memory, compare that as an additional condition; do not use video memory alone as a substitute for the GPU model.
Graphics requirements may also be tied to a preset, resolution, and frame-rate target. Keep those qualifiers with the hardware comparison so that “meets minimum” does not get misread as “will run at high settings.”

Storage
Check the free space on the drive where Steam will install the game. Compare that free capacity with the space printed in the listing, not with the drive’s total advertised capacity. Leave room for the operating system, updates, temporary installation files, and other games.

If the listing recommends an SSD, distinguish that recommendation from a hard capacity requirement. The game may install on a hard drive when the page calls an SSD recommended, but loading behavior and the publisher’s expected experience may differ.
Additional requirements
Read all text beneath the component list. A listing can include DirectX, an internet or network requirement, a 64-bit or other architecture requirement, a required operating-system version, or notes about controllers and other software. These details can determine whether the game starts even when the CPU, RAM, GPU, and storage appear sufficient.
5. Find your computer’s actual specifications
Use your operating system’s built-in system-information and storage tools to identify the processor, installed memory, graphics device, operating-system version, and free disk space. The exact labels and menu paths vary by Windows, macOS, and Linux release, so use the settings or information panel supplied by the operating system you are running rather than assuming a path from another version.

- Operating system: edition, version, and architecture if displayed.
- Processor: full model name.
- Memory: installed RAM.
- Graphics: the active GPU model; computers with multiple GPUs may display more than one device.
- Storage: free space on the specific drive selected for the Steam library.
Write the values down or keep the information window visible beside the Steam listing. Comparing one field at a time prevents a strong result in one category from hiding a shortfall in another.
6. Interpret the comparison
Every field meets or exceeds the recommended row
This is the strongest result available from the listing. It indicates that your computer reaches the publisher’s recommended hardware and platform conditions. Apply any performance notes exactly as written, and remember that drivers, temperatures, background applications, and game updates can still affect actual results.
The computer falls between minimum and recommended
The game may be viable with settings below the recommended target, but the listing alone cannot predict a particular frame rate. Look for a publisher-supplied preset, resolution, and frame-rate note. If none is provided, treat the result as uncertain rather than assuming that the recommended row is optional.

One or more fields are below minimum
Do not promise that the game will run. A shortfall in the operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, DirectX, architecture, or another listed condition is a warning that the title is outside the publisher’s stated minimum configuration. Identify the exact missing field before considering whether the computer can be changed; an upgrade may be impossible or uneconomical on a particular laptop or prebuilt system.

Use only the conditions the publisher actually lists, and check the additional notes for related constraints. Do not invent a threshold for an omitted component. The absence of a number does not establish that any value will work, only that the listing does not state one in that section.
7. Use performance notes as game-specific context
Some Steam listings connect each requirement tier to an expected graphics preset, resolution, and frame rate. One cited listing describes its minimum hardware as targeting Low settings at 1080p and 30 FPS, while its recommended hardware targets High settings at 1080p and 60 FPS.

Those targets describe that particular game’s publisher-listed expectations. They are not a universal definition of what “minimum” or “recommended” means on Steam. If your page gives different settings or no targets at all, use the wording on that page rather than importing the example.
8. Check installation space separately
Storage is easy to overlook because a computer can meet every CPU, RAM, and GPU requirement while lacking enough free capacity. Confirm the drive assigned to the Steam library, then compare its current free space with the game’s listed storage requirement.

- Account for updates and temporary space used during installation.
- If an SSD is recommended, record that as a performance or loading recommendation rather than confusing it with the required number of gigabytes.
- Recheck free space immediately before downloading if the drive is nearly full.
9. Decide whether to download
- Confirm the platform: you are reading the requirement block for the operating system you will use.
- Confirm the hard conditions: operating-system version or architecture, CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, DirectX, network, and other listed notes.
- Classify the result: above recommended, between the two rows, or below minimum.
- Set expectations: use any listed preset, resolution, and frame-rate target; otherwise acknowledge that performance is uncertain.
- Make the download decision: proceed when the comparison fits your tolerance for uncertainty and available space; otherwise investigate the specific shortfall first.
There is no requirement to buy another product to perform this check. If the result exposes a genuine hardware limitation, evaluate that computer’s upgradeability and the cost of addressing the exact component rather than choosing a generic upgrade.

10. Optional automated checkers
A Steam-listed third-party checker can compare a computer’s CPU, graphics card, RAM, video memory, and storage with a game’s requirements. Such a result is an estimate, not a guarantee. The listing’s developer notes that real performance varies with drivers, thermals, and background applications.
Use an automated result as a second opinion:
- Verify that the tool detected the correct GPU, especially on systems with integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Compare its inputs with the current Steam listing; publishers can update requirements.
- Investigate any disagreement manually by checking the operating-system section and the exact component models.
- Do not treat a pass from a checker as proof of a specific frame rate.
You can complete the basic compatibility check directly from the store page and your operating system’s information tools, so an external checker is optional.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using another game’s requirements
Problem: You assume games from the same developer, series, or genre share hardware needs.
Correction: Return to the exact game’s current store page.
Reading only the minimum row
Problem: You interpret minimum hardware as a promise of smooth play or high settings.
Correction: Read the recommended row and every performance note, then carry the stated preset, resolution, and frame-rate target with your conclusion.
Checking the wrong operating-system block
Problem: You compare Windows requirements with a Mac or Linux installation.
Correction: Select the platform section that matches the system on which the game will run.
Comparing only the graphics card
Problem: A suitable GPU distracts from insufficient RAM, an unsupported CPU, or inadequate storage.
Correction: Compare every listed field, including DirectX, architecture, network, and notes.
Confusing total disk size with free space
Problem: The drive is large enough in total but lacks room for the installation.
Correction: Check free capacity on the selected Steam library drive and leave headroom for updates.
Treating a checker as a guarantee
Problem: An automated pass is taken as proof of a particular frame rate.
Correction: Verify the detected components and use the Steam listing as the primary comparison, with drivers, thermals, and background applications in mind.
