To check and manage where Steam games are installed, open Steam > Settings > Storage. To move games without uninstalling them, create or add a Steam Library on the destination drive first, then move selected games from Storage—or move one title from its Library properties. Moving the Steam client itself is a different, riskier operation and should not be confused with moving game installs.
This guide covers both the multi-game and single-game routes, how to set up a destination, what to check if a library is missing, and why a client move needs extra care. Steam’s interface labels can change as the client updates, so follow the labels visible in your installed version.
Check Steam game storage and library locations
Steam’s Storage settings are the official starting point for reviewing installation drives and managing library locations. The view identifies the default installation drive and lets you add another library path. The exact information and controls visible can change as the Steam client is updated, so use the labels shown in your installed version.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam > Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Choose a listed drive or library to review its Steam installations and storage information.
This is the place to check which Steam library holds your installed games and to manage the available library locations. If you are trying to find out how much of a drive is being used by games, start by selecting the relevant drive in Storage and reviewing the installations and storage information Steam displays there. The display is tied to the libraries Steam knows about, so a library that has not been added or recognized may not appear as an expected location.

Steam’s current support instructions identify C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon as the default Windows game-installation folder. That is a Windows example, not a universal path for every operating system or a guarantee that your own installation uses the default. Your Steam Library location and the client’s installation location are related but distinct: game folders live in a library, which can be on a different drive from the client.
That distinction matters when you are freeing space. Moving a game installation changes the library location of that game; moving the Steam client is a separate procedure with different folders and backup considerations. You do not need to relocate the client simply because you want games to use another drive.
For Steam’s official instructions on the Storage manager and library paths, see Moving a Steam Installation and Games.
Set up a Steam Library on the destination drive
Steam’s move command needs a destination Steam Library to select. If the drive does not already have one, add a library path in Storage before moving a game. You do not need to uninstall the game or create a library folder by manually copying game files.
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the plus control in the Storage view to add a library location.
- Select the destination drive or path offered by Steam and complete the add-library flow.
- Confirm that the new library appears in Storage before starting the move.
Once another library path exists, Steam can direct future installations there as well. When choosing a destination, check that the drive is available to your computer and has enough free space for the game or games you intend to move. Steam’s support instructions do not specify a universal capacity figure, because the required space depends on the installations you select.
Adding the library first also makes the destination available in Steam’s move controls. If you go directly to a game’s properties before setting up an alternate library, the desired destination may not be offered. Return to Storage, add the path, and then retry the move. The same prerequisite applies whether you plan to move one title or several.
Use the Storage interface to add the location rather than treating an arbitrary folder on another drive as a Steam Library automatically. If you already have a library on that drive, Steam’s guidance says you can add the existing alternate library through the plus control as well. Check that Steam lists the intended path after adding it.

If your current drives cannot accommodate the library you need, an additional internal SSD is one optional product category to consider, but compatibility depends on your computer and Steam’s instructions do not identify a universal model, capacity, or interface. Steam cautions against installing the Steam client on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues; that caution does not establish a particular performance figure or make a purchase necessary.
Move multiple Steam games using Storage
Use the Storage manager when you want to move selected installations from one library to another. Steam says its move feature transfers existing games without requiring an uninstall.

- Select the source drive or library that currently contains the games.
- Select the games you want to transfer. Check the selection carefully before proceeding.
- Choose Move.
- Choose the destination library you created or added, then confirm the move if prompted.
Move only the titles you mean to transfer. A move changes where Steam keeps those game installations; it is not the same as moving the Steam client, and it does not by itself relocate unrelated files such as local saves that a game stores outside its Steam library.
The key sequence is source first, selection second, destination last. Selecting the source library lets you work with the games installed there; choosing the destination tells Steam where the selected installations should go. Before confirming, compare the selected titles with your intention and make sure the destination shown is the library you added. If the destination is absent, do not substitute a different folder simply because it is on the correct drive; go back to Storage and add the intended library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

This is useful when several titles need to move from one library, but it is not a requirement to move everything together. You can select the games relevant to your space-management task rather than changing all of the installations on the source drive. Steam’s instructions do not set a minimum number of games for this route, so it can be used for a selected set; for a single title, the Library-page route below is another supported option.
Steam describes the feature as moving existing games without requiring an uninstall. That means the intended operation is not to remove each game and then download it again at the new location. The available guidance does not promise a particular transfer duration or give a speed estimate: no universal time can be stated for a move from the support instructions. Let Steam complete the operation through its move control rather than treating it as a manual file-copy task.
Move one game from its Library page
For a single title, Steam provides a route through the game’s properties. The destination library must already be set up; the game’s properties do not replace the step of adding an alternate library.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game you want to move.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Move Install Folder.
- Choose the destination library and complete the move.
Steam documents this route in its instructions for managing downloads and updates. If the destination is not offered, return to Settings > Storage and add the alternate library first.
Use the title’s own properties when you want to act on that installation rather than selecting games from a source library. The route still uses Steam’s supported move functionality, and it still depends on an alternate Library folder already being set up. It is not a separate way to create the destination. If the game’s Properties page does not show the expected control, check that you opened the installed title’s Installed Files section and that a destination library exists in Storage.
These two routes solve similar problems but organize the task differently: Storage is convenient for moving selected games from a drive, while the Library page starts with a particular game. Neither route is the procedure for relocating Steam itself.
Choose the right operation: game move or client move?
The two operations affect different folders and have different preparation requirements. Most people who only need room on another drive should move game installations, not the Steam client.

This is a separate procedure. If it fails without a backup, Steam warns that games may need to be reinstalled. |
Steam cautions against installing the client on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. That warning is about potential performance, not a claim that every external drive will fail. The official guidance does not compare specific drive types, models, capacities, or connection standards, so a particular hardware purchase cannot be inferred from it.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Think of the choice in terms of scope. If the goal is to move one or more game installations, use one of the game-move routes and prepare a destination library. If the goal is to relocate the Steam client itself, you are dealing with the client and its associated folders, not merely changing the location of selected games. Steam treats that as a separate, more involved operation.
The preparation also differs. A game move requires the destination Steam Library to exist in Steam. A client move calls for a backup of steamapps before you attempt it, because Steam warns that games may need to be reinstalled if a client move fails and there is no backup. The local-save question is important for the client move too, particularly if moving to another computer or reinstalling: Steam Cloud is not used by every game, and local save data may be outside the game installation.
There is no source-backed cost comparison or required hardware upgrade here. The first choice is software navigation, not shopping. If a storage purchase is necessary for your own setup, compare the free capacity you need, whether an internal drive can physically be installed in your computer, and the cost of options compatible with it. Steam’s instructions do not establish a preferred SSD model, say that a particular capacity is right for every player, or quantify SSD-versus-HDD performance. Treat an internal SSD as an optional search phrase, not a recommendation that every reader must buy one.
Before moving Steam itself, protect games and saves
Moving the Steam client is not accomplished by simply using the game-move controls above. Steam’s guidance recommends backing up steamapps before attempting a client move. Treat that backup as protection against a failed process; without it, Steam says you may have to reinstall games.
This is why the client move deserves a separate decision rather than being used as a shortcut for freeing space. If your objective is only to put a few large game installations on another drive, the Storage or per-game move controls address that need without undertaking the client relocation. If you do intend to move the client, preserve the recommended folder before starting and avoid assuming the game-move instructions are sufficient for the different operation. Steam’s cited guidance warns about backup consequences but does not make a failed move inevitable.
Also check whether the games you care about store saves locally. Many third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may keep saves or profiles under C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games, but that is only a place to check, not a guaranteed save location. Each developer determines where a game stores its data. If you are moving to another computer or reinstalling, look up the save location for each specific game and make a separate backup if needed.
Do not treat the Windows path as the universal location for all saves, or assume that a title without a save folder there has no local data. Steam’s point is that save locations vary by developer. Check the specific game’s documentation or developer guidance for the relevant save path and backup needs, especially before reinstalling or changing computers. A normal game-library move should not be confused with a full migration of the saves and profiles that might live elsewhere.
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance discusses local save locations and installation issues in Update & Installation Issues. Do not assume that a game’s files in the Steam Library include every save or profile file.

Troubleshoot a missing library or a game that will not start
If Steam does not recognize a library after a move, first check whether the alternate library is listed in Storage. Steam’s guidance says to add an existing alternate library through the Storage manager’s plus control if necessary. Avoid deleting or recreating folders until you have confirmed which library path contains the game files.
A missing location and an error in a game are different problems. If the library itself is not visible, add the existing alternate library through Storage. If the library is present but a particular game has a problem, use the game-specific verification option. If the folder or library is not behaving as expected, Steam also documents a repair option. These are separate tools for separate scopes, not proof of a single underlying cause.
Library does not appear in Steam
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage and use the plus control to add the existing library location.
- Confirm that you selected the folder that is the Steam Library, not merely a nearby parent folder.
- If the library is on a removable drive, make sure that drive is connected and available before asking Steam to use it.
After adding it, check Storage again to confirm the library is listed. This is also the right first check if a destination you expected to choose during a move is missing. Steam’s troubleshooting instructions describe adding an existing alternate library; they do not call for deleting the files and starting the game installation over as the first response.
Repair a library folder
Steam documents Repair Folder in Settings > Storage as a troubleshooting option for library problems. Use it when the library itself is not behaving as expected, rather than treating every individual game error as proof that the whole drive is damaged.

Repair Folder is distinct from verifying one game’s files. The folder-level option is for a library problem; the game-level check is available under that game’s Installed Files settings. Choose the control that matches what is not working instead of applying a broad diagnosis to every error.
Verify a game’s files
For a problem with a particular game, open its Properties > Installed Files page and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam lists damaged files as one possible result of hardware problems, crashes, power surges, or other causes; a single error does not establish that the drive is failing. If the issue returns, note the exact Steam message and check the game’s files and the drive separately instead of assuming one cause.
Verification is a troubleshooting option for the selected game, not an instruction to move it or a guarantee that every startup problem comes from damaged game files. Steam’s support guidance lists several possible reasons files can be damaged. Avoid concluding that a drive is defective from one error alone; follow the specific message and evaluate the library or game with the appropriate Steam control.
For Steam’s guidance on issues during updates or installation, see Update & Installation Issues. If the client interface labels differ from those listed here, use the current labels in your installed client and consult Steam Support’s current instructions.
What to check before you begin
- Destination library: It exists in Steam Storage and is selectable as a destination.
- Available capacity: The destination drive has enough room for the installations you plan to move.
- Correct scope: You are moving game installations rather than attempting to relocate the Steam client unintentionally.
- Local saves: If you are changing computers or reinstalling, check the save location for each game that may not use Steam Cloud.
- Drive suitability: Steam cautions against installing the client on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues; its guidance does not identify a particular drive as compatible with every computer.
For a game move, the practical checklist is short: verify the source library, add the destination in Storage, confirm it is available, select only the intended games, and confirm the destination before moving. For a client move, stop and do the additional preparation instead: back up steamapps and check local save locations for games that do not use Steam Cloud. These checklists differ because the two operations affect different parts of a Steam setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check how much space my Steam games are taking up?
Open Steam > Settings > Storage and select the listed drive or library to review its Steam installations and storage information. If a library is missing from the view, add the existing alternate library with the plus control before relying on the listed locations.
Can I move a Steam game without uninstalling it?
Yes. Steam’s Storage move feature transfers existing games to another Steam Library without requiring an uninstall. Add the destination library first, then select the game or games in Storage and choose Move. For one title, use Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder.
How do I change where Steam installs future games?
Open Steam > Settings > Storage and use the plus control to add another library path. Once the path exists, Steam can direct future installations there. The exact interface labels may vary as the client updates.
Why is my other drive not showing as a destination?
The destination Steam Library may not have been added yet. Go to Settings > Storage and add the drive or existing alternate library with the plus control, then confirm it appears before trying the move again. If it is a removable drive, make sure it is connected and available.
Should I move the Steam client or just the games?
If your goal is to free space or place installations on another drive, move the selected game installations. Moving the Steam client is a separate, more involved operation; Steam recommends backing up the steamapps folder first and warns that games may need to be reinstalled if the move fails without a backup.
Will moving a game also move its saves?
Do not assume so. Some third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves or profiles outside the Steam Library. Steam identifies C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games as one place to check on Windows, but each developer chooses the save location. Check the specific game, especially before changing computers or reinstalling.

Steam notes that damaged files can have multiple causes, so one error alone does not prove the drive is failing.
Do I need to buy an SSD to move Steam games?
No. Moving games is a Steam feature and does not require a purchase if you already have a suitable destination library with enough free capacity. If you need more storage, check the capacity you need, your computer’s compatibility, and cost. Steam’s instructions do not recommend a specific model or quantify drive performance.
The Bottom Line
To check Steam game storage, open Settings > Storage. To move games, add a destination library first, then use Storage for selected titles or Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder for one game.
