Open the exact game’s Steam Store page before you buy. Read its supported operating systems and System Requirements, compare the listed CPU, memory, graphics and storage with the computer you will use, then check the controller label. For a Steam Deck, also read the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility rating and its detailed criteria. This title-specific check is more reliable than assuming that another game, a publisher’s general recommendation or your controller model will work the same way.

What to check on a Steam Store page

A Steam purchase decision has several separate parts. A computer can be powerful enough but run an unsupported operating system. A game can support controllers while still requiring a mouse for setup. A title can be playable on Steam Deck but need manual configuration. Check each axis independently rather than treating one label as a universal compatibility guarantee.

Store-page item Question it answers How to use it
Supported operating systems Does Steam list the operating system you will use? Check the operating-system line directly. Hardware that meets the numbers does not overcome an unsupported OS.
Minimum requirements Does your computer meet the game’s published lower threshold? Compare your actual CPU, memory, graphics hardware and available storage with every listed item.
Recommended requirements What hardware does the developer recommend for a more capable setup? Read it separately from minimum requirements. It is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
Full Controller Support Can the game be used with only a controller? Steam defines this as being able to download, launch and play with a controller alone.
Partial Controller Support Could some interaction require a mouse or keyboard? Plan for possible non-controller steps such as installation, configuration, a launcher or menus.
Steam Deck Compatibility How does Valve categorize the title for Deck use? Read the rating and the explanation of any unmet criteria, especially for Playable or Unsupported results.

Steam’s own compatibility guidance directs buyers to the game’s Store-page System Requirements and says to check hardware as well as operating-system support. See Steam’s platform-availability guidance.

Step 1: Open the exact game’s Store page

  1. Sign in to Steam in the desktop client or a browser.
  2. Search for the precise game title and open its official Store listing. Check the title, developer and edition so you do not evaluate a demo, soundtrack, expansion or similarly named product by mistake.
  3. Scroll to the System Requirements section. Requirements are title-specific; do not substitute another game in the same series or a publisher’s general PC recommendation.
  4. Note whether the page has separate Windows, macOS or Linux requirements. The supported operating-system information and the hardware lists belong to that particular product page.

Requirements and support labels can change as a game receives updates or its Store page is revised. Recheck the current page immediately before buying, especially if you are relying on an older saved recommendation or a result copied from a search engine.

Step 2: Confirm your operating system first

Read the operating-system line before comparing components. Steam lists the operating systems a game supports, and a mismatch can make the purchase unsuitable even when your processor, memory and graphics card appear faster than the listed minimum.

Windows, macOS and Linux are separate cases

Do not infer cross-platform support from the existence of a Windows requirement list. If the page lists only Windows, that is not a promise that the game runs natively on macOS or Linux. If more than one operating system is listed, use the requirements associated with the system you will actually boot; they may not be identical.

How to handle an OS that is not listed

  • Treat an unlisted operating system as an unresolved compatibility issue, not as a pass.
  • Look for a separate current support statement for that exact game before purchasing.
  • Do not convert a Deck rating into a general Linux, Windows or macOS guarantee. Deck compatibility is a separate assessment for Valve’s handheld.

Step 3: Compare your computer with minimum and recommended hardware

After the OS check, compare the machine you will use with each category shown on the Store page. Record the actual components rather than relying on a computer’s marketing name; two systems with a similar product label can have different processors or graphics hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU (processor)

Compare the processor model and, where the page provides it, the generation or clock information. A “faster” label from a different product family is not enough to establish equivalence. If your CPU is below the listed minimum or the page gives no directly comparable detail, mark the result as uncertain instead of assuming the game will run.

Memory (RAM)

Use the installed system memory available to the game, not the capacity of a drive or graphics card. Close other heavy applications when testing a system that only narrowly meets the stated amount, but do not present that as proof that the game will perform well.

Graphics hardware

Compare the actual GPU model with the listed graphics requirement. Integrated graphics and discrete graphics are not interchangeable merely because both report a similar amount of video memory. If Steam lists a specific graphics API, driver feature or memory amount, treat that as part of the requirement.

Storage

Check the requested storage space against free space on the drive where Steam will install the game. A page may list an installation amount without describing future patches, save files or optional content, so leave practical headroom rather than filling a drive to the exact number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimum versus recommended

Label What it represents Decision use
Minimum The developer’s published lower hardware threshold for the listed configuration. If your system falls below any material item, compatibility is not established. Meeting every minimum item still does not promise a particular frame rate or visual setting.
Recommended A higher hardware recommendation for a more capable setup. Use it to judge headroom. Falling below recommended is not automatically a failure if you meet minimum, but it means the page is not describing your system as the preferred configuration.

Steam’s requirements are not a benchmark for every combination of resolution, graphics settings, driver version and background workload. Unless the game’s own documentation supplies a tested result for your exact setup, do not translate a requirement into a promise such as “60 frames per second.”

A practical comparison worksheet

  • Operating system: write down the edition and version you will use, then match it to the Store page.
  • Processor: record the exact model and compare it with the minimum and recommended CPU lines.
  • Memory: record installed RAM and compare the stated capacity.
  • Graphics: record the exact GPU, including whether it is integrated or discrete, and compare the page’s model, memory and API notes.
  • Storage: check free space on the target Steam library drive against the listed requirement.

A missing value is itself a reason to investigate. Do not fill an omitted requirement with a guess or assume that a nearby model is equivalent.

Step 4: Check whether a controller is supported

Look near the game’s Store-page feature information for Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support. These labels describe how much of the game’s use can be completed with a controller; they do not identify every controller model that will behave identically.

What Full Controller Support means

Steam uses Full Controller Support for a game that can be downloaded, launched and played with only a controller. This is the strongest Store-page indication for someone who wants to avoid a mouse and keyboard, including during initial navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Partial Controller Support means

Partial does not mean “controller unusable.” It means that some part of the experience may require a mouse or keyboard. Common examples include selecting options in an external launcher, entering text, changing configuration, completing installation steps or navigating an interface that lacks controller focus. Plan to keep another input device available until you have confirmed the exact workflow for that title.

Steam’s Big Picture guidance states: “Any Steam game can be played while in Big Picture mode, though not all Steam games support the use of a controller.” Its definitions and supported-controller information are in Steam’s Big Picture mode guide.

Controller families listed by Steam

Steam’s Big Picture support list includes the Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Steam notes that third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. The list is therefore a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every game exposes the same prompts, wireless features or button mapping on every device.

If you need hardware, an Xbox wireless controller is an optional example of a controller family Steam lists as supported; you do not need to buy one merely to inspect a game’s label. Check the title’s Full or Partial designation and any game-specific notes before choosing a device.

Controller-only buying decision

  1. Choose Full Controller Support when you need installation, launch and play to be possible without a mouse or keyboard.
  2. Choose Partial Controller Support only if you can tolerate occasional keyboard or mouse use, or if you have confirmed that the required steps are acceptable.
  3. If no controller label is visible, treat controller-only use as unconfirmed and seek current information for that exact title before paying.

Step 5: Read the Steam Deck Compatibility rating

On a Deck, use the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility section in addition to the ordinary OS and hardware information. The rating is specifically about Steam Deck use; it is not a universal PC system-requirements result.

Rating Steam’s meaning What to expect
Verified Steam categorizes the game as working great by default. The Deck program found the title suitable without the manual intervention associated with lower categories.
Playable The game can work, but may require manual configuration or mouse/touch interaction. Read the page’s notes so you know which step, menu or control needs attention.
Unsupported Steam does not currently consider the game playable on Deck. Do not treat this as a promise that no workaround exists; it means the current program classification is not playable.
Unknown The game has not been tested in the Deck Verified program. Unknown is not a failure result and not evidence of success. Find additional current information before relying on it.

For Playable or Unsupported results, Steam’s Deck guide explains that the Compatibility section identifies the requirements that were not met. Read those details instead of stopping at the colored category label. The official explanation is available in Steam’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Deck rating and controller support answer different questions

A game can have a favorable Deck rating while still carrying Partial Controller Support, because Deck compatibility can account for touch or trackpad interaction and the rating is not a promise of controller-only navigation. Conversely, a Full Controller Support label does not establish that the title meets every Deck criterion. Check both indicators.

Step 6: Verify and troubleshoot controller input on Steam Deck

If you already own a Deck and input is uncertain, Steam provides built-in checks rather than requiring you to guess from the Store badge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings on the Steam Deck.
  2. Select Controller.
  3. Choose Test Controller Inputs and press each stick, button, trigger and directional control to see whether the Deck registers it.
  4. For a particular game, open its Library details and inspect the controller layout. Steam lets you view or edit that per-game layout.
  5. If the game is marked Playable, follow the Store-page compatibility notes before changing bindings; the note may identify a required keyboard, touch or manual configuration step.

These checks separate a hardware-input problem from a game’s own support limitations. A controller that registers correctly in Steam can still encounter a title-specific launcher or menu that requires another input method. Steam’s official Deck input instructions are in Steam’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

A repeatable pre-purchase decision workflow

Use this short sequence whenever you evaluate a game, and keep the results tied to the machine and input method you will actually use.

  1. Identify the exact Store listing. Confirm the title and edition.
  2. Check the operating system. Reject or investigate a mismatch before spending time on hardware comparisons.
  3. Compare every published hardware field. Check CPU, memory, graphics and storage against both minimum and recommended sections.
  4. Decide how much performance uncertainty you accept. Minimum and recommended labels do not guarantee a frame rate on your resolution, settings or driver stack.
  5. Check the controller label. Full suits controller-only plans; Partial requires tolerance for keyboard or mouse steps.
  6. If using Deck, read the rating and notes. Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown have different meanings, and the detailed criteria matter.
  7. Resolve decisive unknowns. If the page omits a component, lists an OS you do not use, or gives a Deck note you cannot accept, investigate current support information for that exact title before buying.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a powerful computer makes the OS irrelevant

Hardware and operating-system support are separate checks. A strong GPU cannot turn an unlisted operating system into a supported one.

Reading minimum as a performance promise

Minimum is a lower published threshold, not a target frame rate or a guarantee of smooth play at a particular resolution. Keep the qualification attached to the number when making your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating Partial as a broken controller

Partial identifies possible non-controller interaction. It may be perfectly workable for someone who keeps a mouse nearby, while it is unsuitable for a strict controller-only setup.

Using a Deck badge as a desktop benchmark

Deck ratings describe compatibility with Valve’s handheld configuration. They do not replace the Store page’s requirements for your Windows, macOS or Linux computer.

Assuming an official controller list covers every game behavior

Steam’s supported families and a game’s Full or Partial label are related but distinct. A controller can be recognized by Steam while a title still displays different prompts, lacks a feature or requires another device for a launcher.

Interpreting Unknown as Unsupported

Unknown means the game has not been tested in the Deck Verified program. It establishes neither success nor failure, so treat it as an information gap.

When the page does not give you a confident answer

  • OS is missing: do not infer support from the Windows list; find a current statement for your operating system.
  • Your component is not an obvious match: record the exact model and seek title-specific confirmation instead of comparing brand names alone.
  • No controller label appears: assume controller-only operation is unconfirmed and keep a keyboard and mouse available if you proceed.
  • Deck is Playable or Unsupported: read the unmet criteria and decide whether the stated manual step is acceptable.
  • Deck is Unknown: recognize that the program has not tested it; do not convert the badge into a prediction.
  • The Store page changed: repeat the check immediately before purchase, because requirements and labels are title-specific and may be updated.

The safest purchase decision is the one that matches the exact game, operating system, computer, controller plan and, when applicable, Steam Deck criteria. If any one of those decisive details remains unresolved, pause the purchase rather than turning a general label into a promise.
