To check Starlink usage, open Data usage in the Starlink app, or sign in at starlink.com, choose Subscriptions, select the service line, and look in its Data section. Whether you need to stay below an allowance depends on your plan: Residential includes unlimited Residential data, while some Roam and Priority plans have allowance-related controls. Check the plan and settings shown in your own account before deciding whether you need to limit usage.
Check Starlink data usage in the app or on the web
Starlink provides account-level usage tracking through its app and website. The app is the quickest route when you are on your phone; the website is useful when you are already managing a subscription in a browser. Keep the app updated so its current features and labels are available.
In the Starlink app
- Open the Starlink app and tap the menu in the top-left corner.
- Select Data usage.
- For more detailed usage information, select the graph in the upper-right corner.
If the usage view is missing or does not match the instructions, check that you are signed in to the account associated with the service and update the app. Starlink’s interface can change, so the labels in your current app may differ.

- Sign in to your Starlink account at starlink.com/account/home.
- Open Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription or service line you want to inspect.
- Find the Data section for that subscription.
If your account has more than one service line, make sure you selected the one whose usage you want to check. A figure for a different subscription will not answer whether this line is approaching its allowance.

What to verify while you are there
Use the account page not just to find a number, but to identify the service line and plan attached to it. Usage by itself does not tell you whether a cap applies or what happens when an allowance is exhausted. Confirm the plan name, the applicable allowance if one is shown, and any controls for additional Priority data. If you manage more than one line, repeat the check for each one; do not assume they share the same allowance or settings.
Starlink says its account page and app can be used to track monthly usage and manage the service plan. The account is also where you should verify current plan terms and controls, because names, availability, allowances, and rates can vary by market and change over time. A plan description seen elsewhere may not match the subscription currently attached to your account.
First determine whether your plan has a data allowance
There is no single monthly data cap that applies to every Starlink subscriber. Starlink’s Residential Service Plan terms describe Residential data as unlimited. Some Roam and Priority offerings, by contrast, have allowance-related limits or controls. The name, allowance, availability, and post-allowance behavior can vary by market and may change; use the plan details and controls currently shown in your account rather than assuming that another customer’s terms apply to you.

| Plan category covered by Starlink’s guidance | Allowance or limit behavior | What happens after the allowance | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential | Starlink’s terms describe an unlimited amount of Residential data. | No monthly Residential data allowance is described in those terms. Congestion and bandwidth-intensive activity may still affect performance during peak periods. | Confirm that your current service is Residential. Do not interpret slower performance by itself as evidence that you reached a monthly data cap. |
| Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB | These named Roam plans have allowances of 100GB and 300GB, respectively. | After the applicable allowance is used, service automatically switches to low-speed unlimited data. Starlink says higher-bandwidth activities, including video streaming, large downloads, and video calls, will be limited. | Verify that your exact plan is one of these tiers and check its current account usage. Do not assume this behavior applies to every Roam plan. |
| Local or Global Priority | Starlink’s guidance describes a monthly Priority data limit and controls for additional Priority data. | Users can opt in to receive additional Priority data automatically when the limit is exhausted. Additional data is supplied in 50GB increments, billed at plan-specific rates on the next invoice, and the automatic setting remains active until opted out. | Review your current Priority data progress, whether automatic additional data is enabled, and the rate for your plan and market. |
The table reflects the plan distinctions in Starlink’s published plan guidance; it is not a universal catalog of every plan, market, or current price. Starlink does not establish one price that applies to all Priority subscribers. Check the terms attached to your subscription before relying on a plan name or allowance seen elsewhere.
Compare plans by their consequences, not just their allowance
When deciding whether a plan’s data rules matter to you, compare five details: whether an allowance applies, what service does after it is used, whether extra data is manual or automatic, how and when extra data is billed, and whether the offering is available in your market. Those distinctions matter more than treating a plan name as shorthand for a universal cap.
For Residential, the relevant issue is not a stated monthly allowance but the possibility of performance changes during peak congestion. For the specifically named Roam 100GB and 300GB tiers, Starlink describes low-speed unlimited service after the allowance, rather than automatic paid top-ups. For Local and Global Priority, the important extra step is checking whether automatic additional data is enabled: Starlink says it supplies additional data in 50GB increments at plan-specific rates, with charges on the next invoice. These rules are not interchangeable, so do not transfer the outcome from one plan category to another.

There is no single price list or allowance table that should be assumed to apply to every market and subscriber. Before changing a plan or relying on a quoted price, read the terms and controls currently displayed for your own service. In particular, confirm whether a displayed additional-data option is active or merely available to select.
How to interpret the number Starlink shows
Starlink says its data tracking uses UTC and that displayed usage may take several minutes to appear. As a result, the app, website, and a separate router monitor may not show identical totals at the same moment. The monthly statement is Starlink’s most accurate usage figure. If you are checking close to an allowance or billing-cycle boundary, allow for display delay and use the statement for the authoritative account-level total.
UTC matters when comparing Starlink’s usage period with a local calendar day or with another device’s daily report. The start or end of a period in your local time may not line up with the same date boundary in the account view. Check that you are comparing the same time span before concluding that data is missing or has been counted twice. The several-minute reporting delay is another reason a reading should not be treated as a live, second-by-second meter.
Starlink calculates usage from bytes sent to and received from connected devices. That includes traffic generated by speed tests, so a connection test can add to the measured total. Starlink says terminal software updates and health checks are not counted toward monthly usage. The router may, however, use a small amount of counted data for its own software updates and health monitoring.
Starlink’s router does not provide a per-device consumption breakdown. A third-party router or network monitor may provide its own estimate, but its totals can differ because it may count different traffic, measure it differently, or record usage at different intervals. Use Starlink’s account view and statement to assess the Starlink-reported total; treat another device’s figures as a separate monitoring view, not a substitute billing meter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy a router estimate can still be useful—and where it stops
A network monitor can help you investigate which devices or activities appear busy on your local network, if that equipment supports such reporting. That information may help you decide what to change, but it does not make the monitor an authoritative Starlink billing record. It may omit or include traffic differently from Starlink’s account measurement, and the two systems may update on different schedules. Starlink specifically says its own router does not track per-device usage, so there is no official device-by-device breakdown to compare against.

If exact account-level usage is the question, use the Starlink subscription’s Data section and monthly statement. If the question is which device on your network generated activity, a separate monitor may offer a clue, but interpret its figures as estimates within that device’s own measurement method. Do not add its total to Starlink’s, average two readings, or use a router reading to dispute an account total without first checking the same time range and the monthly statement.
How to avoid an allowance surprise
If your current plan has a limited allowance or you have enabled paid additional Priority data, make checking usage part of your routine rather than waiting until service changes or an invoice arrives. The practical goal is to pair the usage figure with the plan rule that applies to it.
- Confirm the service line and plan. In Subscriptions, select the service line you use and read the plan shown there. Establish whether it is Residential, Roam, Local Priority, Global Priority, or another offering before treating a number as a cap.
- Check the allowance and its consequence. For a qualifying Roam 100GB or 300GB plan, the published guidance says the result of using the allowance is low-speed unlimited service. For Local or Global Priority, inspect the controls for additional Priority data and any plan-specific rate shown in your account.
- Review the graph before the cycle ends. Check the app’s detailed graph or the subscription’s Data section on the website. Because the display can lag several minutes and usage is tracked in UTC, do not treat a just-refreshed figure as a guaranteed real-time reading.
- Check the Priority automatic-data setting. If you do not want additional Priority data to be added automatically after the limit is exhausted, review the setting and opt out as appropriate. Starlink says automatic additional data is delivered in 50GB increments, billed on the next invoice at plan-specific rates, and the setting persists until you opt out.
- Reduce discretionary high-bandwidth activity if needed. On Roam 100GB or 300GB, streaming video, large downloads, and video calls are among the higher-bandwidth activities Starlink says may be limited after the allowance. If you are nearing the threshold and want to preserve remaining allowance, postponing large transfers or reducing optional streaming is a practical choice.
- Use the statement to settle a discrepancy. If a displayed total and another monitor disagree, do not average them or assume the router reading is billable usage. Compare the account figures with the monthly statement, which Starlink identifies as the most accurate measure.
A simple check-in sequence
When you review a line, first confirm that you have selected the correct subscription. Next, identify its exact plan and whether that plan has an allowance. Then check the current account usage and, on Priority, inspect the automatic additional-data control and the applicable rate. If you are close to an allowance, remember that the display may be several minutes behind and tracked periods use UTC. Finally, compare the figure with the statement when you need the most accurate account total.
This sequence avoids two common mistakes: treating every Starlink plan as capped and assuming that every displayed data number has the same consequence. If you are on Residential, a large usage figure does not by itself mean you have exceeded a monthly cap. If you are on a limited Roam tier, the stated post-allowance behavior is low-speed unlimited service for the named 100GB and 300GB plans. If you are on Priority, the automatic additional-data setting can affect billing, so the control deserves as much attention as the graph.
What to do when the usage figure looks wrong
A mismatch does not necessarily mean the account is miscounting. Check the measurement and context before drawing a conclusion.
- The app and website differ: Confirm they show the same subscription and comparable time period, then allow several minutes for tracking data to appear. Starlink tracks usage in UTC, so local-time expectations can also make a period look offset.
- A third-party router reports a different total: The devices may use different counting rules, traffic coverage, or update intervals. Starlink does not promise that an outside monitor will match its account-level total.
- Usage rose after a speed test: Starlink counts speed-test traffic among bytes sent and received by connected devices, so testing can contribute to usage.
- You cannot identify a device responsible for usage: Starlink’s router does not show per-device consumption. A separate monitoring device may offer its own breakdown, but it should not be treated as Starlink’s official total.
- Service slowed down: First verify the plan. Starlink describes Residential data as unlimited, while congestion and bandwidth-intensive activity can affect peak-period performance. The low-speed unlimited behavior in the cited Roam guidance applies specifically to Roam 100GB and 300GB after their allowances are used, not automatically to all plans.
- You see additional Priority data on an invoice: Review whether automatic additional data was enabled on the relevant Local or Global Priority service. Starlink says the setting remains active until the user opts out, and added data is billed in 50GB increments at the plan-specific rate.
When comparing a bill with the usage view
Start by matching the subscription, usage period, and plan. A mismatch between a local-time report and Starlink’s UTC-based tracking may shift what appears to be a daily total, and the account view may take several minutes to catch up. Then check whether the plan has a paid additional-data control. For Priority, the setting can remain active until you opt out, and the added data is charged at the rate for that plan in 50GB increments on the next invoice. The monthly statement remains Starlink’s most accurate usage figure; a router estimate is not a replacement for it.

If the figures still appear inconsistent after checking those details, avoid treating an instantaneous app reading as final. Keep the comparison focused on Starlink’s own account and statement for the relevant service line and period. Starlink’s published guidance identifies the statement as the most accurate source, but does not promise that third-party network totals will match its counting method.

How often should you check?
For an unlimited Residential plan, the usage graph can help explain activity, but its figure is not evidence of a monthly Residential cap. For an allowance-based Roam plan, check periodically and again before the end of the billing cycle if staying within the allowance matters to you. For Local or Global Priority, check both usage progress and the automatic additional-data setting; the latter can affect charges even if you are not actively watching the graph.
No universal checking schedule or safe daily target follows from Starlink’s guidance: how quickly an allowance is used depends on the subscriber’s traffic and the specific plan. A useful approach is to check often enough that a change in usage gives you time to adjust, while remembering that the displayed total may lag and the monthly statement is the strongest reference for final usage.
If you are approaching an allowance, a check before the cycle ends gives you an opportunity to respond, but it cannot make the graph instantaneous. Avoid relying on a particular day-by-day target unless you have calculated it from the allowance and remaining time for your own plan; Starlink does not specify a general safe daily usage benchmark. The useful control is the current account total, interpreted against the service line’s actual plan terms.
Key distinction: an allowance, a slowdown, and congestion are not the same
An allowance is a plan-specific data quantity with a defined account consequence. For the cited Roam 100GB and 300GB tiers, Starlink says use beyond the allowance leads to low-speed unlimited data. Priority plans have controls for additional paid data. Residential terms describe unlimited Residential data, but also note that congestion and bandwidth-intensive use can affect performance during peak periods. Therefore, a slowdown alone does not establish that a data allowance was exceeded; check the account’s plan, usage, and applicable terms together.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Likewise, the presence of a graph or a large usage number does not mean every subscriber is about to be charged. A usage figure becomes meaningful only when paired with the plan rule: unlimited Residential data, an allowance and low-speed outcome for the specified Roam tiers, or a Priority limit with possible additional-data billing if the corresponding control is enabled. Keeping these concepts separate makes it easier to troubleshoot a performance change without assuming a cap that may not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I manage my Starlink data?
Open the Starlink app menu and choose Data usage, then select the graph in the upper-right for more detail. On the website, sign in at starlink.com, open Subscriptions, select the service line, and look in Data. Check the plan and its controls alongside the usage figure.
Does Starlink Residential have a data cap?
Starlink’s Residential Service Plan terms describe an unlimited amount of Residential data. Congestion and bandwidth-intensive activity can still affect performance during peak periods, but that is not the same as a stated monthly Residential data cap. Verify that your account actually shows Residential service.
What happens when I use all the data on Roam 100GB or Roam 300GB?
Starlink says these specific plans switch automatically to low-speed unlimited data after the allowance is used. Higher-bandwidth activities such as video streaming, large downloads, and video calls will be limited. Do not assume this rule applies to every Roam offering; check your exact plan and market.
Does Starlink show which device used the data?
Starlink says its router does not provide a per-device consumption breakdown. A third-party router or network monitor may offer its own device-level estimate, but it can measure different traffic or update at different intervals and should not be treated as Starlink’s account-level total.
Why does Starlink usage differ from my router’s total?
Starlink tracks bytes sent and received by connected devices, including speed-test traffic, and reports usage using UTC. Its display may lag by several minutes. Third-party equipment may count traffic differently or record it at different intervals; Starlink identifies the monthly statement as its most accurate usage figure.
Can Priority data charges happen automatically?
For Local or Global Priority, Starlink says users can opt in to automatic additional Priority data when the monthly limit is exhausted. It is added in 50GB increments at plan-specific rates and billed on the next invoice. The setting remains active until you opt out, so review the control and rate shown for your own plan.
The Bottom Line
Check the correct Starlink service line in the app or under Subscriptions on starlink.com, then interpret its Data figure according to that line’s plan. Residential is described as unlimited; the named Roam 100GB and 300GB plans move to low-speed unlimited service after their allowance; and Priority users should review the automatic additional-data setting and plan-specific rate. Usage is tracked in UTC, may take several minutes to appear, and the monthly statement is Starlink’s most accurate figure.
