To fact-check an AI-generated podcast, turn its script or transcript into a list of factual claims, check that the transcript matches the recording, and verify each claim against reliable evidence—not against the AI output or citations it generated. If you confirm an error after publication, correct it promptly and clearly, updating the audio, transcript, and episode information where supported. AI can help with drafting and organization; it does not establish that a claim is true.
What to check in an AI-generated podcast
AI can enter a podcast at several stages: research, script drafting, transcription, editing, or narration. The review process should cover each stage that can affect what listeners hear. A fluent sentence, a confident synthetic voice, or a plausible-looking citation can still contain an error. Treat generated claims and references as leads to investigate, not evidence.
Check factual assertions that could change what a listener understands, especially:

- Numbers, statistics, comparisons, and claims about trends.
- Quotations and descriptions of what a person or institution said.
- Claims about causes, responsibility, accusations, or the sequence of events.
- Statements about current events or other information that may have changed since the script was drafted.
- Claims that are technically accurate but could mislead without context, such as a figure without its year, population, geography, or denominator.
PBS Standards’ “Accuracy” guidance says producers should be able to identify the source for each factual assertion and explain why it is reliable. That is an editorial standard from PBS, not a universal legal rule, but it is a useful baseline: if you cannot show where a claim came from and why the source supports it, do not present it as established fact.

How to fact-check an AI-generated podcast
1. Build a claim list from the approved script
Start with the version of the script intended for recording. Break it into individual assertions that can be checked. A paragraph may contain several claims: a person’s title, a date, a reported figure, and an explanation of why something happened. Assess each material assertion separately rather than treating the paragraph as one fact.
Give extra attention to claims that are consequential, disputed, easy to misquote, or likely to be repeated as a headline. Mark quotations, accusations, causal explanations, and current-event statements for a close review. A value such as “one in five” is not complete on its own: check what was counted, among whom, in which place, and during what period.
Use generated citations only to find possible source material. Open the cited document or source yourself, confirm that it exists, and check the relevant passage or data directly. A citation that looks complete does not show that the source supports the sentence attached to it.

Before using a transcript as the basis for fact-checking, listen to the recording while following the approved text. Speech recognition can mishear names, dates, figures, and unfamiliar terms; an editor can also introduce a mismatch while revising or assembling audio. Correct the transcript against the recording first, then check the corrected wording against external evidence.
Listen specifically for:
- Names, places, titles, and technical terms pronounced incorrectly or rendered incorrectly in the transcript.
- Numbers or dates that differ from the approved script.
- Negations, qualifiers, and short words that can reverse or narrow a claim.
- Edits that remove a caveat, change the order of statements, or make two passages sound like one continuous statement.
- Quotations that are incomplete or joined to surrounding narration in a way that changes their apparent meaning.
Apple Podcasts requires submitted transcripts, subtitles, and captions to accurately reflect the audio. Podcast annotation research by Setty and Becker, published as a 2025 preprint, also treats transcription correction and ambiguity resolution as distinct parts of podcast fact-checking. In practice, this means a transcript is useful working material, but it is not a substitute for listening to the episode.

3. Verify claims against underlying evidence
Where possible, go to the material closest to the event or fact being described: an original document, dataset, recording, court record, official statement, or research publication. Read or inspect enough of it to understand the claim’s context. A secondary summary may help you locate the underlying evidence, but do not assume that a summary—or an AI paraphrase of it—preserves the source’s qualifications.
For every claim, ask:
- Does the source actually support the exact wording in the episode?
- Is it authoritative for this particular claim, or merely repeating another account?
- Does the claim preserve the source’s date, scope, population, geography, and denominator?
- Is there a relevant qualification, limitation, or contrary finding that would change the listener’s understanding?
- Can another independent source corroborate the point, especially if it is disputed or consequential?
PBS says its general rule for breaking news or controversial claims is to have at least two authoritative, independent sources on the record. This describes PBS’s newsroom practice for those claim types; it is not a universal numerical requirement for every podcast claim. Independence matters: two accounts that both rely on the same original report do not necessarily provide two separate confirmations.
4. Check meaning and context, not just individual words
A sentence can be literally accurate yet create a false impression through omission or framing. Check whether a quotation answers the question it is presented as answering, whether adjacent edits imply a connection that the evidence does not establish, and whether a statistic is described with its relevant limits. Do not let narration imply causation when the source only reports that two things occurred together.
For example, if a script says a report found a change “in the country,” confirm whether the report covers the whole country or a particular sample or region. If it says an event happened “because of” a policy, check whether the source establishes that causal link or merely discusses timing. PBS’s accuracy guidance explicitly treats sufficient context as part of accuracy and warns against framing that misleads or encourages unsupported inferences.
5. Keep a verification record
Record enough information for another editor to retrace the decision without repeating the entire investigation. A compact log can include:

- The exact spoken wording, with the relevant sentence or surrounding context.
- The source document or URL and the passage, table, or data point that supports or contradicts the claim.
- The verification status and any qualification needed in the script.
- The editor who resolved the claim and the date of the decision.
This record format is an editorial recommendation, not a platform mandate. It makes it easier to catch unsupported claims before release and to respond accurately if a listener later reports a mistake.
How to correct a published podcast episode
When you confirm an error, first identify exactly what is wrong and how much of the episode it affects. A mispronounced name, a wrong statistic, a mistaken identification, and an edit that creates a misleading impression may call for different fixes. Do not leave a consequential error unaddressed while waiting for a routine production cycle.
Make the correction clear
A useful correction tells listeners which episode and claim are affected, what was incorrect, and what the correct information is. Say what you changed in the audio or accompanying materials. Do not bury a significant correction in an unrelated update or silently replace content in a way that leaves regular listeners unaware of the change.
PBS’s standards call for timely corrections that are abundantly clear and for responding when the public brings errors to a producer’s attention. Those are PBS editorial standards, but the underlying practice is broadly useful: acknowledge a confirmed mistake plainly and give the audience the corrected information.
Update the audio and supporting materials
Where your publishing setup supports it, update the episode audio as well as the show notes and transcript. Apple says creators who want to publish an updated version of an episode should upload a replacement to the original. That is Apple-specific guidance; other hosts and directories may handle episode updates differently. Check how your own distribution setup propagates a replacement so listeners do not continue receiving an outdated file or transcript.

Keep a dated correction record in your editorial file, including the original claim, the correction, the material changed, and when the update was made. This recommendation provides a clear history for the production team; the reviewed platform guidance does not prescribe one universal correction-note template.
Decide whether the change needs an on-air notice
Consider how likely listeners are to encounter or rely on the original version. If the error changes a key assertion, misidentifies someone, materially misstates a statistic, or leaves a misleading impression, make the correction conspicuous in the places your audience will encounter the episode. A corrected transcript alone may not reach someone who has already downloaded the audio. Explain the correction in the show notes or another visible episode notice where available, and make the updated audio easy to identify.
How to preserve audio integrity during editing
Technical cleanup should improve audibility without changing what the recording communicates. The Associated Press’s “Telling the Story” standards say, “AP’s audio content always must be accurate.” AP permits limited technical processing—such as normalization, level adjustment, equalization, noise reduction, and fades—when it does not conceal, obscure, remove, or otherwise alter the content.
AP also says not to add sound effects, substitute audio from another event, or embellish or fabricate an event with added sound. These are AP newsroom standards, not automatically binding rules for every podcast producer, but they offer a concrete integrity benchmark. If an edit could change what a listener thinks was said, who said it, or what happened, review it as an editorial change rather than routine cleanup.

Do you need to disclose AI-generated voices?
For Apple Podcasts, yes: Apple requires creators who use AI to generate audio or video—including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts, and AI-synthesized replicas of real individuals—to prominently disclose that use to audiences in the content and metadata for each episode and show. Apple also prohibits AI use that misleads audiences or deceptively portrays real-life events. State clearly what was generated, and do not imply that a synthetic voice is a real speaker.

Disclosure should give listeners enough information to understand the role AI played. For example, distinguish an entirely synthetic host from a human host using an AI-generated segment, and avoid wording that obscures whether a real person’s voice was replicated. The requirement above is specific to Apple Podcasts; do not assume that one platform’s policy is the rule for every distributor.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance on disclosing generative AI use in scientific work, published 28 May 2026, offers a useful model by analogy, not a podcast-wide requirement. It recommends verbal disclosure for speech or audio and says a disclosure should describe the affected content, action, AI tool, purpose, and human oversight. It also says AI tools should not be cited as authors or primary sources and that people remain responsible for investigating accuracy and integrity.
What EU distribution may require
The European Commission’s page on the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content says Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. Its summary distinguishes those legal obligations from the voluntary Code of Practice: it describes marking and detection duties for providers and disclosure of certain deepfakes and AI-generated public-interest text by deployers. Whether a particular podcast or use falls within a legal obligation depends on the facts and the relevant provisions. This overview is not individualized legal advice; assess the specific use and distribution context rather than treating every AI-assisted episode as subject to the same disclosure rule.
A practical review sequence before release
- Freeze the text to be recorded. Use the approved script as the starting point for the claim list so the fact-check applies to the words intended for the episode.
- Extract and prioritize claims. Identify factual assertions, then flag names, numbers, dates, quotations, accusations, causal claims, and current events for close scrutiny.
- Inspect cited material. Open each source behind an AI-generated citation, verify that it exists, and check the original passage or data rather than relying on the generated summary.
- Resolve each claim. Confirm that reliable evidence supports the wording, add necessary context, seek independent corroboration for disputed or breaking claims, or revise or remove unsupported assertions.
- Listen against the script. Check the final recording for wording differences, mispronunciations, omitted qualifiers, and edits that could shift meaning. Correct the transcript against the actual audio.
- Review audio changes. Make sure cleanup improves sound without concealing, removing, or changing content, and that no added audio fabricates or embellishes an event.
- Prepare disclosure and metadata. Where the distribution platform requires it, identify AI-generated audio in the episode and metadata, including the show-level information specified by Apple Podcasts.
- Retain the verification log. Keep the claim wording, timecode, evidence, decision, editor, and date so the decisions can be checked later.
What this process does—and does not—guarantee
A completed claim log and a careful listen reduce the chance that an unsupported statement, transcription mistake, or misleading edit reaches the audience. They do not make every source infallible or guarantee that every claim will remain current. For claims that can change, preserve the date and scope in the wording and be prepared to update the episode if a material error is later confirmed.
The central editorial distinction remains simple: AI may assist with drafting, transcription, synthesis, or narration, but a generated answer is not proof. The producer or editor must be able to trace each meaningful assertion to evidence, ensure the recording communicates the approved and supported claim, and correct the record when that standard is not met.
