To check a SonicWall SMA 1000 for exploitation signs, open AMC > Monitoring > Logging, inspect the relevant log files with search and level/source/status filters, and compare exact entries with the indicators in the applicable SonicWall advisory. The most concrete July 2026 indicators are unusual /__api__/login or /__api__/logout requests returning HTTP 200, /wsproxy requests with suspicious host parameters returning HTTP 101, path-traversal names in ctrl-service.log hotfix rollback entries, and unexpected routes for those API paths in /var/lib/unit/conf.json.

A matching line is an indicator for investigation, not proof of compromise by itself. Interpretation depends on the appliance model, exact platform-hotfix, advisory date, and corroborating events. July, September, and October 2026 notices cover different CVE sets, affected builds, fixed builds, and exploitation status.

Start with the exact appliance and firmware scope

Record the SMA 1000 model and complete platform-hotfix string before deciding what a log event means. The 2026 notices apply to SMA 1000 models 6210, 7210, and 8200v, but the affected and fixed builds differ by advisory. Do not treat an appliance as safe merely because it is newer than one notice: a later notice can cover a separate vulnerability set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Write down the model: 6210, 7210, or 8200v.
  • Capture the complete installed platform-hotfix, including every digit after the dash.
  • Record the date and time zone used by the appliance and by your incident timeline.
  • Identify whether the appliance is hardware or virtual, because the published recovery action differs.

Use two independent questions for every finding: does this model and exact build fall in the affected range for a particular advisory, and do the observed artifacts match indicators for that same advisory? Keep conclusions separated by CVE set and notice date.

Advisory date Vulnerabilities and exploitation status Affected platform-hotfixes Fixed release
July 14, 2026 (SNWLID-2026-0008) CVE-2026-15409, pre-authentication SSRF in the WorkPlace interface; CVE-2026-15410, post-authentication code injection in AMC. SonicWall reported cases indicating active exploitation. 12.4.3-03245, 12.4.3-03387, 12.4.3-03434, 12.5.0-02283, 12.5.0-02624, and 12.5.0-02800. 12.4.3-03453 and 12.5.0-02835 or higher.
September 1, 2026 (SNWLID-2026-0016) CVE-2026-83548, pre-authentication SSRF through an unintended forward-proxy, and CVE-2026-83549, post-authentication RCE. SonicWall says both were actively exploited in the wild. CVE-2026-83548 is CVSS 10.0 (Critical); CVE-2026-83549 is CVSS 7.8 (High). All instances of 12.4.3-03453 and 12.5.0-02835 on the listed platforms. 12.4.3-03526 and 12.5.0-02952.
October 6, 2026 (SNWLID-2026-0017) CVE-2026-102255 SSRF (CVSS 10.0), CVE-2026-102256 RCE (7.8), CVE-2026-102257 Zip Slip path traversal (7.2), and CVE-2026-102258 stored XSS (5.5). SonicWall reported no evidence that this separate set was being exploited in the wild. 12.4.3-03526 and earlier, and 12.5.0-02952 and earlier. 12.4.3-03670 and 12.5.0-03082 or higher.

The October statement applies only to CVE-2026-102255 through CVE-2026-102258. It does not withdraw SonicWall’s earlier active-exploitation reporting for the July or September vulnerabilities. CVSS values describe severity, not the number of victims or the likelihood that a particular appliance was compromised.

Open the AMC log viewer

  1. Sign in to the appliance management console (AMC) with an account authorized to view logs.
  2. Open Monitoring > Logging.
  3. Choose the log file from the viewer’s log-file selector.
  4. Use the search box for an exact path, status code, session identifier, or distinctive term.
  5. Narrow results with the available level, source, and status filters. Apply one filter at a time when troubleshooting an empty result set, then combine filters once you know the fields are populated.
  6. Expand long entries to see the complete request or message, and refresh the viewer before exporting or recording a final timeline.

The 12.5 Administration Guide lists system message, management message, management audit, management access, network proxy/tunnel audit, Web proxy audit, client installation, and unregistered-device logs. The exact files visible can vary with software and role, so use the documentation matching the installed build when a label differs.

Use the log fields to build a timeline

System message entries

The system message log records access-control decisions. In the 12.4 guide, each entry includes level, time, source, session ID, and message. Sources include network proxy, network tunnel, Web proxy, and policy server. Start with time and source, then follow the session ID through related entries. A suspicious request that is isolated from all other activity is less informative than a sequence showing access, policy decisions, configuration activity, and subsequent errors under the same session.

Management access and audit logs

Management access records the user, time, network location, and actions such as logins, data access, and configuration changes. Management audit entries can show administrative changes that help explain a later file or service event. Correlate these records with the request timestamp rather than assuming that the account named in an entry is the attacker; stolen credentials, automation, and administrator activity can produce similar fields.

Preserve context while searching

  • Capture the complete entry, not only the highlighted search term.
  • Record the appliance time zone and the time range searched.
  • Save the session ID, source, status, and surrounding entries.
  • Note which filters were active so another investigator can reproduce the search.
  • Do not alter configuration or delete logs while collecting evidence.

Search the July 2026 indicators exactly

SonicWall states that its July list is not exhaustive. Search each indicator separately, then correlate any hit with management, proxy, and system-message activity. Do not invent host values for the /wsproxy test; the advisory identifies suspicious host parameters but does not publish example malicious values in the available material.

1. Unexpected API login or logout requests

In extraweb_access.log, search for requests to /__api__/login and /__api__/logout with HTTP status 200. The status code is part of the indicator. A request to one of these paths with another response code is not the same published IoC, although it may still deserve review in context.

For every hit, capture the timestamp, client or network location if shown, session identifier when available, authenticated user information, and nearby entries. Compare the event with management-access records and expected administrative activity. Repeated requests, unusual source locations, or activity outside a normal maintenance window increase the need for escalation but do not independently prove exploitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. WebSocket proxy requests with status 101

In extraweb_access.log, search for /wsproxy requests that contain suspicious host parameters and return HTTP 101. HTTP 101 indicates a protocol switch, so preserve the full request and host parameter exactly as displayed. SonicWall does not provide a public example value in the cited indicator list; do not create a guessed blocklist.

Correlate a hit with source address, session ID, proxy or tunnel source, and adjacent system-message decisions. A single 101 response can be legitimate in some environments, which is why the host value, timing, and related activity must be reviewed by an incident responder or SonicWall Technical Support.

3. Path-traversal names in hotfix rollback entries

Inspect ctrl-service.log for hotfix rollback entries containing path-traversal names. Preserve the exact name, the rollback time, the initiating context, and entries immediately before and after it. Do not normalize, decode, or rewrite the path in your notes; the spelling can matter to forensic analysis.

Compare the rollback with your change calendar and management-audit records. An authorized rollback without traversal syntax is a different event from the indicator described by SonicWall. If traversal naming appears without a documented maintenance action, treat it as a high-priority artifact and avoid further changes to the appliance until evidence is preserved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Unexpected routes in the Unit configuration

Review /var/lib/unit/conf.json for routes for /__api__/login or /__api__/logout. SonicWall’s July advisory says these URIs do not exist in legitimate configuration. Their presence is therefore a configuration artifact requiring immediate vendor-assisted review.

Do not edit or remove the routes to make the file look clean. Preserve the file and its metadata through your normal evidence-collection process, and ask SonicWall Technical Support for instructions appropriate to your appliance build. A configuration snapshot without its time, acquisition method, and surrounding logs is harder to interpret.

Search efficiently in AMC

Begin broad, then narrow

  1. Search the relevant file for the literal path, such as /__api__/login.
  2. Add the response status, such as 200, only after confirming that the viewer indexes status text in the selected file.
  3. Filter by source (for example, Web proxy or network proxy) and then by severity or level.
  4. Expand each candidate entry and follow its session ID across system-message and management logs.
  5. Refresh the viewer and repeat the search over the same time range to detect entries arriving during collection.

Search by time windows

Use the first suspicious timestamp as an anchor. Review a surrounding window large enough to include authentication, policy decisions, configuration changes, and rollback activity. Keep separate timelines for pre-authentication requests and post-authentication actions: the July and September advisories distinguish those attack stages, and a later administrative action may not be the initial access.

When a search returns nothing

  • Confirm that the correct log file is selected; the indicators are not all in the same file.
  • Remove one filter and search the literal path or status again.
  • Check whether the viewer is showing the current file or an archived period.
  • Verify the time zone and date range.
  • Use the installed-build administration guide if field names differ from the 12.4 or 12.5 labels.

An empty result means only that no matching entry was found in the selected data and time range. It does not establish that the appliance was not exploited, particularly because SonicWall describes the July indicators as non-exhaustive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret a possible match with two axes

Document the result in a matrix with one row per advisory:

Axis Question to answer How to record it
Firmware and model scope Is this model and exact platform-hotfix listed as affected by the advisory, or is it at or above the stated fix? Record the model, full build, advisory identifier, and comparison with the fixed release.
Artifact match Does the log or configuration artifact match the advisory’s path, status, file, and naming details? Attach the complete entry, timestamp, session ID, source, and surrounding events.

These axes produce different conclusions. An affected build with no observed IoC means exposure exists but the available logs do not show a listed artifact. A matching artifact on a fixed build may reflect activity before patching, a retained configuration artifact, or another issue and still requires investigation. A non-affected build with a superficially similar request should not be attributed to the advisory without technical confirmation.

What to do when an indicator is found

Preserve and escalate first

  1. Stop routine cleanup, log rotation changes, configuration edits, and unplanned reboots that could destroy evidence.
  2. Preserve the complete AMC entries, relevant configuration artifact, timestamps, session IDs, and management-audit context.
  3. Record the model, exact platform-hotfix, deployment type, and the advisory/CVE set you believe matches.
  4. Contact SonicWall Technical Support for IoC review, especially for the September actively exploited set.
  5. Request thorough forensic analysis rather than treating one matching line as a final compromise determination.

Apply the published recovery actions

For the September 1, 2026 actively exploited vulnerabilities, SonicWall directs affected organizations to upgrade to the latest hotfix and contact Technical Support for IoC review. If IoCs are detected, its published actions are to re-image hardware appliances or redeploy virtual appliances, change all user and administrator passwords, and reset TOTP tokens. The July notice also recommends thorough forensic analysis and these recovery measures when indicators are present.

Coordinate the upgrade or rebuild with your incident-response plan and vendor guidance for the exact model. Re-imaging or redeployment is not a substitute for evidence preservation: collect what you can first, then follow the support team’s sequence so that containment does not erase the data needed to determine scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the October set is the relevant concern

The October 6 notice directs affected deployments to upgrade to the latest hotfix version. It does not provide a log-IoC checklist in the notice text described here. For CVE-2026-102255 through CVE-2026-102258, follow the current applicable advisory and SonicWall support guidance rather than reusing the July indicator list as if it were complete.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Conflating CVE sets: 12.4.3-03453 and 12.5.0-02835 are fixed releases for the July set but are affected by the September set.
  • Reading “no evidence” too broadly: the October statement concerns only its four CVEs and does not negate July or September exploitation reports.
  • Using status codes loosely: the July API indicator specifies HTTP 200, while the WebSocket proxy indicator specifies HTTP 101.
  • Assuming the list is complete: SonicWall explicitly says the July indicators are not exhaustive.
  • Declaring compromise from one line: a match is a reason to investigate and escalate; corroborate it with sessions, sources, administrative activity, and configuration state.
  • Guessing a malicious host value: the available advisory material does not publish example values, so preserve what the appliance recorded instead of inventing patterns.
  • Applying historical statements to current CVEs: SonicWall’s May 2022 notice concerned earlier SMA 1000 12.4.0/12.4.1 vulnerabilities and is not current evidence about the 2026 vulnerabilities.

Minimum incident record to hand to support

Provide a concise package that lets the vendor reproduce your conclusion:

  • Model and exact platform-hotfix.
  • Hardware or virtual deployment type.
  • Advisory identifier and CVE set under review.
  • UTC conversion and original appliance time zone.
  • Original log file name, complete entries, status codes, sources, levels, and session IDs.
  • Management-access and audit events for the same time window.
  • Any ctrl-service.log rollback entry or /var/lib/unit/conf.json route artifact, preserved without editing.
  • Actions already taken, including upgrades, password changes, token resets, re-imaging, or redeployment.

This record distinguishes an observed artifact from an assumption about impact and helps Technical Support determine whether additional collection is required.

Does an HTTP 200 request to an API path prove compromise?

No. It matches one published indicator and should be correlated with session, source, management, and configuration evidence. SonicWall says the indicator list is not exhaustive, and a single match is not a standalone verdict.

What if my appliance is on 12.4.3-03453 or 12.5.0-02835?

Those releases are at or above the July fixes but are explicitly affected by the September advisory. Compare the build with each advisory separately; the September fixes are 12.4.3-03526 and 12.5.0-02952.

Should I reset credentials after finding an indicator?

For the September actively exploited set, SonicWall’s published recovery actions include changing all user and administrator passwords and resetting TOTP tokens, along with re-imaging hardware or redeploying virtual appliances when IoCs are detected. Coordinate timing with evidence preservation and Technical Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rely only on AMC’s system message log?

No. Use the log file named by the indicator, then correlate with system message, management access, management audit, proxy, and tunnel records. Different files provide different fields and context.

Are the September CVEs the same vulnerabilities as the July CVEs?

No. They are separate vulnerability sets with different affected and fixed hotfixes. Keep searches and conclusions tied to the advisory and date.

What does an October “no evidence of exploitation” statement mean for my appliance?

It applies only to CVE-2026-102255 through CVE-2026-102258. It does not cancel SonicWall’s active-exploitation reporting for the separate July and September CVEs.
