To find out whether satellite internet is available at your home, search your complete address in the FCC National Broadband Map, note the satellite providers it lists, and then enter that same address in each provider’s own availability checker. The FCC map is a useful starting point, not an order confirmation: provider tools are the next step for current eligibility and plan details, and neither tool tells you whether trees or buildings block a usable installation spot.

A reliable answer requires three separate checks: whether a provider reports service at the location, whether the provider currently accepts that exact address for an order, and whether your property has a compliant place to install the equipment. Complete them in that order, then compare only the plans actually returned for your address.

What an availability check can—and cannot—tell you

Satellite internet availability is address-specific. A provider may report service at a location on a map, but that signal does not establish that you can place an order on the terms you want or that your property has a suitable place for the equipment. Check both the provider’s current eligibility for the exact address and the sky view at the likely installation location.

The FCC National Broadband Map is designed to show fixed internet services reported for homes and small businesses in the United States. Its fixed broadband layer includes satellite, and the location view can display providers, technologies, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a selected location. Those speeds are not a promise of the speeds you will experience.

The map relies on provider-submitted availability data. Fixed broadband providers file twice a year, and the FCC also updates the map through verification, location updates, and public input. Read the map’s data-as-of date when you check it; a listing is a snapshot of reported availability, not a live installation assessment.

That distinction explains why two tools can produce different answers without either one being a simple substitute for the other. The map is a broad, regulator-maintained view of reported service. A provider’s own form is tied to its current ordering system, plan inventory, and address qualification. Neither tool performs a physical inspection of your roof, yard, balcony, or other possible mounting area.

Before you start: gather the exact location details

Use the complete service address, including the street number, street name, city, state, and ZIP code. If you are checking a new build, rural route, apartment, or property with multiple structures, be especially careful to select the location that represents the building where service would be installed. A nearby road, town-center pin, or mailing address for a different structure can produce a misleading result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a short record of each lookup. Write down the address as entered, the date, the FCC map’s data-as-of date, the providers shown, the technology listed, and any maximum advertised speeds. When you move to a provider’s site, save the returned plan name, price, fees, and conditions. Eligibility and offers can change, so dated notes help you tell a current result from an older one.

Check the FCC map for providers at your location

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map. Search the complete street address. If the address is in the FCC database, it appears as a selectable result, displayed in capital letters. Select the matching result rather than relying on a nearby road or town-level view.
  2. If you do not have a street address, search by town and state or use the map’s location view. This can help you explore an area, but it is less precise than checking the actual service location. Confirm the exact address with providers before making a decision.
  3. Open the fixed broadband availability view for the selected location. Review the provider list and identify entries that report satellite service. Note the technology and any maximum advertised download and upload speeds shown for each provider.
  4. Record the map’s data-as-of date. Keep it with your notes so you can distinguish a recent map result from a later provider response.
  5. Use the FCC challenge process if the result appears wrong. The map provides separate routes to challenge availability information and to challenge a missing or inaccurate location point. Choose the route that matches the issue: whether a provider is reported at a location, or whether the location itself is represented correctly.

The FCC’s Broadband Data Collection Help Center describes the map as showing fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless services available at each mapped home or small business. Its “How to Use the FCC’s National Broadband Map” guidance was updated May 15, 2025. The live map’s own data date is the relevant date for an individual lookup.

How to read the map result

Start with the provider name and technology. You are looking for entries identified as satellite, not simply every fixed provider shown at the location. Then examine the maximum advertised download and upload speeds associated with that provider or technology. These figures help you understand what the provider reported to the FCC, but they are not a speed test, service-level guarantee, or prediction of the result at every hour.

Look for the location marker itself. If the marker is on the wrong building, the provider list may describe another property. If no selectable address appears, do not substitute a nearby address and assume the result applies to your home. Correct the location record or proceed to the provider’s own address form using the exact service address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map can also help you discover that more than one satellite provider reports service. That is a useful shortlist, not a final ranking. A provider might report a maximum speed that looks attractive while offering a different current plan, data policy, equipment arrangement, or installation condition at your address.

Confirm the exact address with each provider

Use the full address you searched on the FCC map in the provider’s own checker. A provider’s tool is the practical next step for current ordering eligibility and locally available offers. Results can differ from the FCC map because the map reflects submitted data while provider tools handle current order qualification and plan information.

Enter the address consistently. Check spelling, apartment or unit information where applicable, city and ZIP code, and the selected state. If a form autocompletes to a nearby location, verify that the suggested result is your intended property before continuing. An address checker that returns a plan for a neighboring location is not confirmation for your home.

Starlink

Starlink’s availability map asks for a service address. Enter the location where you want service installed and follow the result shown for that address. Treat this as an address-level eligibility check; it does not evaluate obstructions at the specific spot where equipment would go.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the Starlink result indicates that the address can be served, continue by considering the installation requirements and the current offer displayed for that location. If it does not return the expected result, recheck the map pin and address spelling before concluding that service is unavailable. The provider’s current response is the one to use for ordering, while the FCC listing remains a separate reported-availability signal.

Hughesnet

Hughesnet’s plan finder requests a street address, city, state, and ZIP code, then returns locally available plan information. Its cited service area covers the contiguous United States, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. The page links to separate sites for Latin American countries, so the US address workflow should not be assumed to determine service in other countries.

Read the plans returned for the address rather than relying on a general Hughesnet coverage statement. Record the recurring price, any displayed fees, advertised speeds, data language, equipment terms, and contract or cancellation conditions. If a plan finder asks for more location information, provide it accurately; the returned offer is tied to the details supplied.

If a provider’s result is unclear, unavailable, or inconsistent with the map, use that provider’s current contact or ordering process to confirm whether the exact service location can be activated. Ask about the specific plan and any address-level restrictions before relying on a general coverage statement.

Keep provider availability, installation suitability, and performance separate

These are related but different questions. A listing on the FCC map is reported availability. A provider address checker indicates current eligibility or offers for the entered location. A clear view of the sky determines whether the equipment can be installed in a workable position. Actual connection performance is a further question; a map’s maximum advertised speed is not a speed test or a guarantee.

FCC National Broadband Map Providers reporting service at a selected US location, technology, and reported maximum advertised speeds. A completed order, installation survey, or guaranteed real-world speed.
Provider address checker Whether the provider currently returns eligibility or plan information for the entered address. Whether a particular spot on the property has an unobstructed sky view.
Property sky-view check Whether a potential installation location appears suitable under the provider’s stated sky-view requirements. Whether the provider will accept the order or what plan terms and performance will apply.

Check the installation location

Starlink says its equipment needs an unobstructed view of the sky and directs customers to its app to find a suitable setup location. Hughesnet says a clear view of the southern sky is required. A map result cannot see trees, buildings, or other obstructions on your property, so inspect the likely installation area separately after checking address eligibility.

Walk around the property and consider more than one possible location. A roof edge, pole, wall, or yard position may have a different view than the first spot you considered. Do not climb onto a roof or alter a structure merely to test availability; the relevant question at this stage is whether a safe, workable location appears possible. The provider’s stated requirements and any installation assessment govern the actual setup.

Seasonal changes can matter to a practical site check. A location that appears open from one angle may be blocked by nearby structures or tree growth from another. The address checker cannot resolve those physical conditions, so keep the installation question separate from the coverage question.

Compare plans only after providers confirm your address

If two or more providers’ address tools return service, compare the offers returned for your location rather than comparing broad coverage claims. Use the current plan details from provider pages: the FCC map is useful for identifying reported providers and technologies, but it is not a substitute for current plan terms.

  • Recurring charge and one-time fees: distinguish the ongoing monthly service charge from any charges due at signup or installation. Note whether a displayed price is conditional or limited to a particular offer.
  • Advertised download and upload speeds: compare the address-specific plan figures, but do not treat advertised or FCC-reported maximums as guaranteed performance. Put the FCC figures and provider plan figures in separate columns so they are not confused.
  • Data or traffic terms: read how each plan describes data use, limits, or traffic management rather than assuming that similarly named plans work the same way. Record any wording that changes how service may operate after a stated threshold.
  • Equipment and installation: check what equipment is required, whether installation is included or separately charged, and what site conditions the provider requires. Confirm whether the equipment arrangement is part of the offer you are viewing.
  • Contract and cancellation terms: confirm any commitment, cancellation conditions, and any charges that apply if you stop service. Do not infer these terms from another provider’s plan or from an older offer.
  • Address, capacity, or plan restrictions: check any limits or conditions attached to the specific result returned for your location. An address may qualify for one offer without qualifying for every plan shown elsewhere.

Provider prices, plan names, and eligibility can change. Verify them in the current provider tool before ordering, and do not reuse an old price or infer an address-specific offer from another household’s result.

A simple comparison worksheet

Create one row per provider and one column for each decision factor. Include the date checked, exact address, plan name, monthly charge, one-time fees, advertised download and upload speeds, data or traffic terms, equipment and installation conditions, contract length, cancellation terms, and any address or capacity restriction. Add a separate note for sky-view requirements.

This format prevents a common mistake: comparing one provider’s promotional monthly price with another provider’s total first-year cost, or comparing an FCC maximum speed with a provider’s plan speed as if they were identical measurements. Keep every figure tied to the page and date where you found it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the map and provider result do not match

The FCC lists a provider, but its checker does not return an orderable plan

Use the provider’s result as the immediate indication of whether it will accept an order for that address, then ask the provider to clarify any discrepancy. The FCC entry remains a report of availability data submitted for the map; it is not proof of current ordering eligibility. If you believe the map’s availability information is inaccurate, submit an availability challenge through the FCC map’s process.

The provider checker finds service, but the FCC map does not list it

Confirm that both tools are using the same complete address and the correct mapped location. If the provider confirms that it can serve the location, retain the provider’s response for your own comparison. You can use the FCC’s availability-challenge process to report map information you believe is incorrect.

The address is missing or the map point is in the wrong place

Use the FCC’s location-challenge process for a missing or inaccurate location point; an availability challenge addresses the provider listing rather than the location record itself. Then repeat the provider check using the exact service address and, if needed, confirm it directly with the provider.

The map shows a provider, but no plan details are visible

That is not unusual for a map intended to show reported service rather than a complete commercial offer. Use the provider’s address checker for current plan information. If the provider tool cannot identify an offer, ask whether the issue is the address, a plan restriction, or another ordering condition rather than assuming the map is an order form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different addresses on one property produce different results

Check which structure each address represents and whether the FCC marker is placed on the intended building. For a property with several residences or outbuildings, a result for one location should not automatically be applied to another. Enter the address of the building that needs service and clarify the installation location with the provider.

Common mistakes that lead to a wrong answer

  • Using a town-level result as proof for a house: an area view can reveal possible providers, but only the exact address and provider response answer the household question.
  • Stopping at the FCC map: the map is a starting point based on provider filings. It does not confirm a current order, a plan, or a physical installation site.
  • Assuming a maximum advertised speed is guaranteed: map speed values describe what was reported, not live performance at your property.
  • Ignoring the map date: record the data-as-of date and the date you checked the provider because both availability data and offers can change.
  • Confusing an availability challenge with a location challenge: challenge the provider listing when the service information is wrong; challenge the location record when the address or point itself is missing or inaccurate.
  • Skipping the sky-view check: service in the coverage area does not prove that trees or buildings permit an acceptable installation position.
  • Comparing stale prices: use the current address-specific offer and read its fees, data terms, equipment conditions, and cancellation language.
  • Applying US tools abroad: the FCC map is for the United States. Other countries require their own regulator, government map, and provider tools.

Checking satellite coverage outside the United States

The FCC National Broadband Map is a US map, and the described workflow is for US addresses. For another country, use local provider availability tools and the relevant regulator’s or government’s broadband map rather than treating the FCC map as an international coverage source. Hughesnet’s cited page identifies the contiguous United States, Alaska, and Puerto Rico and directs users to separate Latin American country sites; availability in one region does not establish availability in another.

The same logic still applies elsewhere: identify providers through an authoritative local map, enter the complete address on each provider’s site, verify the current offer, and inspect the property for the provider’s installation requirements. Do not carry over US plan names, prices, service areas, or map interpretations to another country.

A final address-check checklist

  1. Enter the complete address in the FCC National Broadband Map.
  2. Select the capitalized address result that matches the intended building.
  3. Review the fixed broadband layer for satellite providers, technology, and reported maximum speeds.
  4. Record the map’s data-as-of date and the date of your lookup.
  5. Note whether the location marker itself appears accurate.
  6. Enter the same address in every relevant provider checker.
  7. Save the current plan, price, fees, speed figures, data terms, equipment requirements, contract terms, and restrictions returned for that address.
  8. Check the likely installation area for the provider’s stated unobstructed-sky requirement.
  9. Use an FCC availability challenge for an incorrect provider listing and a location challenge for a missing or inaccurate map point.
  10. Compare only providers that confirm the exact address, and verify all terms immediately before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is satellite internet available at my address?

Search your complete US address in the FCC National Broadband Map and identify satellite providers in the fixed broadband view. Then enter the same address in each provider’s own checker. The provider’s current response is needed to confirm ordering eligibility; the FCC listing alone is not an order confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I check satellite internet coverage at my house?

Use the FCC map for a provider overview, select the exact address result, and note the satellite entries and map date. Next, run the address through provider tools such as Starlink’s service-address map or Hughesnet’s plan finder. Finally, check whether your property has the clear sky view required for installation.

Can I get Starlink at my address?

Enter the intended service address in Starlink’s availability map and follow the result for that location. If it indicates eligibility, separately use Starlink’s app or guidance to identify a suitable location with an unobstructed view of the sky. Address eligibility does not inspect your property for obstructions.

Does the FCC broadband map show satellite internet?

Yes. The FCC National Broadband Map’s fixed broadband layer includes satellite service and can show providers, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds reported for a selected location. The figures are reported maximums, not guaranteed real-world speeds.

Why does the FCC map show a provider but the provider says I cannot order?

The map is based on provider-submitted availability filings and is updated through verification, location updates, and public input. A provider’s own checker handles current ordering eligibility and plan information. Confirm the address and ask the provider to clarify the discrepancy; if the map information appears wrong, use its availability-challenge process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my address is missing from the FCC map?

Try the complete address and check whether the map’s location marker is missing or misplaced. Use the FCC location-challenge process for a missing or inaccurate location point. Separately, enter the address in provider checkers because a missing map point does not by itself prove that no provider can serve you.

What is the difference between an availability challenge and a location challenge?

An availability challenge addresses the provider or service information reported for a location. A location challenge addresses the location record itself, such as a missing or inaccurately placed address point. Choose the process that matches the error.

Will the FCC map’s advertised speed be the speed I receive?

No. The map displays maximum advertised speeds reported for the selected location. Those values are not a speed test or a guarantee of actual performance. Compare current provider plan details, but keep advertised figures separate from measured performance.

What sky conditions are required for satellite internet installation?

Starlink says its equipment needs an unobstructed view of the sky and points customers to its app for a suitable setup location. Hughesnet says a clear view of the southern sky is required. Check the provider’s specific guidance after confirming address eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which satellite internet provider serves my location?

The FCC map can identify providers reporting satellite service at a selected US location. Confirm each candidate with its own full-address checker, because current eligibility, plan availability, and address-specific restrictions may differ from the map listing.

How should I compare two satellite internet plans?

Compare the current offers returned for your exact address. Review monthly price, one-time fees, advertised download and upload speeds, data or traffic terms, equipment and installation conditions, contract and cancellation terms, and address, capacity, or plan restrictions. Do not compare only broad coverage claims or old prices.

The Bottom Line

For a US address, start with the FCC National Broadband Map, select the exact location, and note every satellite provider and the map’s data-as-of date. Then run the same complete address through each provider’s current checker. Treat those results as separate from the physical installation question: Starlink requires an unobstructed sky view, while Hughesnet requires a clear view of the southern sky. Compare only address-specific offers, fees, data terms, equipment requirements, contracts, and restrictions, and use the FCC’s availability or location challenge process when the map itself appears wrong.
