To check RAM and “ROM,” use your device’s built-in information pages. On Windows, open Settings > System > About for installed RAM and Settings > System > Storage for disk capacity and free space. On a Mac, use System Information for hardware details and Activity Monitor for current memory use. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > [Device] Storage. On Android, open Settings > Storage, or use Files by Google.

“ROM” is common consumer shorthand for persistent storage, but current operating systems usually call it storage, capacity, available space, or free space. RAM and storage are different: RAM is the working area used by running apps and the operating system, while storage keeps files and apps when the device is turned off.

RAM and ROM: what you are actually checking

Before opening any menu, decide whether you need the device’s installed hardware capacity or its current usage. These are not interchangeable measurements.

Term What it means Typical label in settings
RAM Short-term working memory used by Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and running apps. Its contents disappear when the device powers off. Installed RAM, Memory, or physical memory
Memory usage How much RAM is being used at this moment. It changes as apps open, close, or run background tasks. Memory pressure, Used memory, or RAM usage
Persistent storage Space for photos, documents, music, apps, operating-system files, and other data that remains after shutdown. Storage, capacity, disk space, or device storage
Available or free space The portion of storage that is not currently occupied. It can be much smaller than total capacity. Available, free, or remaining
ROM A colloquial term often used for a phone’s built-in storage. It is not the label most current system menus use. Usually Storage or internal storage

Google summarizes the distinction this way: “Storage is where you keep data, like music and photos,” while “Memory is where you run programs, like apps and the Android system.” A phone advertised with 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM therefore has two different capacities, serving two different purposes.

How to check RAM and storage on a Windows PC

Find installed RAM in Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
  2. Select System, then select About.
  3. Under Device specifications, find Installed RAM. The value is the amount of physical RAM Windows recognizes in the computer.

The same About page identifies the processor and Windows edition and version. Those details help when you are checking more than one PC or confirming which machine you are inspecting. If you are giving information to a technician, record the model name and Windows version along with the RAM figure.

Check total and available disk space

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Review the main drive’s capacity and the space currently used by apps, temporary files, documents, and other categories.
  3. To review additional internal or external drives together, open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.

Storage categories explain why available space can be lower than the drive’s advertised capacity. Windows also reserves space for the operating system, updates, recovery data, and file-system overhead. Check each drive separately when a computer has more than one disk; free space on an external drive does not solve a full system drive.

What to do if Windows shows less RAM than expected

  • Check whether the number is reported in gigabytes (GB) and whether part of the memory is reserved for integrated graphics or hardware.
  • Confirm that you are viewing Installed RAM, not a Task Manager snapshot of currently available memory.
  • If the PC has recently been upgraded, shut it down fully and check the About page again after restarting.
  • For a machine with multiple memory modules, consult the computer maker’s model documentation before opening the case; the Windows page confirms what is recognized, not whether an unrecognized module is physically installed.

Do not compare a live “available” number with the capacity printed on the computer’s box. Installed RAM is a hardware total; available memory changes as Windows and applications run. Likewise, the Storage page’s free-space figure is not the disk’s nominal capacity.

Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but these settings pages continue to show the device’s information; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 when the hardware supports it.

How to check RAM and storage on a Mac

Use System Information for hardware details

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Settings > General > About.
  3. Select System Report.
  4. Review the hardware entries for the Mac’s installed memory and other components. The report also contains software information.

The exact wording and layout can vary by macOS release. System Report is the appropriate place for a hardware inventory; it is not a live performance dashboard. Use the hardware entry when you need the installed-memory amount for a support request or when comparing two Macs.

Use Activity Monitor for current memory use

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or find it with Spotlight.
  2. Open the Memory view.
  3. Read the current memory-use figures and the memory-pressure graph to see how running processes are affecting RAM.

Activity Monitor answers “How much memory is being used right now?” It does not replace the installed-memory information in System Report. A high usage figure can be normal when macOS is caching files or several large applications are open. Look for persistent memory pressure and repeated slowdowns rather than reacting to one momentary reading.

Find Mac storage information

Apple’s System Information guidance directs users to the Storage view in System Settings for storage-space information. Open the Storage entry shown in your version of System Settings and review total capacity, used space, and the categories consuming it. Apple changes navigation labels between macOS releases, so follow the current sidebar labels rather than a path copied from an older Mac guide.

When reporting the result, state whether you are quoting total capacity or available space. A Mac can have several volumes or external drives, and the amount free on one volume is not automatically the amount free on another.

How to check storage on an iPhone or iPad

Use the device’s Storage page

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage; the device name appears in this position.
  4. Read the storage summary and the list of apps. Each app entry shows how much space it uses; tap an app for additional details and management options.

The page also presents storage recommendations when iOS or iPadOS has suggestions. Cached and temporary data may not be counted in exactly the same way as permanent user files, so category totals can change without you manually adding or deleting a file. The app list is useful for finding unusually large games, video apps, downloads, or offline content.

This page reports persistent storage, not the iPhone or iPad’s installed RAM. Apple’s consumer storage procedure does not provide a general Settings route for displaying a physical RAM figure, so do not infer RAM from the storage tier shown on the device.

Inspect an iPhone or iPad from a computer

  1. Connect the device to the computer with a suitable cable and unlock it if prompted.
  2. On a Mac using a current macOS version, open Finder and select the device.
  3. On Windows or supported Apple software, select the device in the Apple Devices app or in iTunes.
  4. Review the storage bar, which divides space by content type.

Older Mac setups running macOS Mojave or earlier may use iTunes for this connected-device view. The computer view and the on-device Storage page can be useful together: one lists apps and recommendations, while the other presents a content-type breakdown. Apple notes that cached and temporary material may be represented differently from permanent files.

How to check RAM and storage on an Android phone

Check internal storage in Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Storage, or use the Settings search box for “storage” if the menu is organized differently.
  3. Review total device storage, used space, available space, and the categories listed by your phone.

Google notes that Android settings vary by phone and software version. A manufacturer may rename the menu, place it under a device-maintenance section, or provide a separate storage-management screen. If a direct Storage entry is not visible, searching Settings for the word “storage” is usually the quickest way to locate the manufacturer’s equivalent page.

Check storage with Files by Google

  1. Open Files (Files by Google).
  2. Tap Menu > Clean.
  3. Check the storage summary at the top for used and available device space.
  4. If the phone has an SD card, review the SD-card space shown in the same area.

Internal storage and SD-card storage are separate. Moving photos or downloads to an SD card can free internal space, but it does not increase the phone’s built-in capacity. Treat the SD-card figure as removable storage and the device figure as internal storage when recording your results.

Find installed RAM on Android

There is no single Google support path that displays installed physical RAM on every Android model. If your Settings app includes a Device information, About phone, Memory, or similarly named page, use the installed-memory figure shown there. Otherwise, check the phone manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and regional variant.

Do not treat a live memory-use number, a feature branded as RAM Plus or virtual memory, or storage temporarily used as swap as the same thing as installed physical RAM. Those features can change how the operating system manages workloads without changing the amount of RAM soldered into the phone. If you need a reliable figure for a repair or purchase comparison, match the complete model designation, not merely the family name.

How to interpret the numbers

Installed capacity versus available capacity

A 512 GB computer drive or a 256 GB phone will normally show less usable space than the marketing capacity. The operating system, recovery partitions, formatting overhead, preinstalled apps, and bundled content occupy part of it. “Available” is the amount you can use now; it is not a hardware specification.

For a clear note, write both numbers when they are shown: for example, “internal storage: total capacity and available space.” This prevents someone from mistaking a temporary free-space reading for the device’s permanent storage tier.

Current memory use versus installed RAM

Live RAM use rises and falls with open apps, browser tabs, background services, and system caching. A high percentage alone does not prove a fault. Use the platform’s memory-pressure or performance indicators when available, and investigate only when the device is consistently slow, apps repeatedly reload, or the operating system reports memory pressure.

Internal storage versus removable storage

Android may show internal storage and an SD card separately. A Windows PC may have several drives, and a connected iPhone or iPad may show a content-type bar rather than a simple folder list. Record the location as well as the number so you do not mistake removable or external capacity for the system drive’s free space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when storage is nearly full

Google Android Help says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” This is general guidance from Google, not a guaranteed failure threshold for every model, Android version, or symptom.

  • Use the device’s storage categories to identify unusually large apps, videos, downloads, or offline media.
  • Remove files you have verified are backed up or no longer needed.
  • Review downloaded media and temporary files before deleting them; an app may recreate cache data later.
  • On Android phones with an SD card, move eligible personal files after confirming that the card is healthy and supported by the device.
  • On Windows and Mac, leave room for operating-system updates and temporary working files rather than filling the drive completely.

Freeing storage does not add RAM. Conversely, closing apps or reducing memory use does not create more disk capacity; these are separate constraints.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every number “RAM.” Installed RAM, used memory, available memory, and memory pressure describe different things.
  • Calling every storage figure “ROM.” Use total capacity, used space, or available space so the reader knows exactly what was measured.
  • Checking cloud storage instead of device storage. On an iPhone or iPad, open the device-named Storage page rather than an iCloud storage summary.
  • Adding removable space to built-in space. An SD card or external drive is a separate location and may not hold every app or system file.
  • Assuming a product-family specification applies to every model. Android configurations can differ by exact model and region.
  • Installing a paid diagnostic utility just to read these figures. Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Android provide built-in views for the checks described here.

Troubleshooting checklist

The menu is missing or has a different name

  • Use the Settings search field for About, Storage, or Memory.
  • Check the operating-system version and the device maker’s support page, especially on Android.
  • On iPhone or iPad, confirm that you opened General > [Device] Storage, not iCloud storage.
  • On a Mac, use the current System Settings sidebar labels; older macOS guides may show a different route.

The number does not match the box or advertisement

  • Verify that you are comparing RAM with RAM and storage with storage.
  • Distinguish advertised capacity from usable capacity after system files and formatting.
  • Check the exact model, storage tier, and regional variant; phones in the same product family can have different configurations.
  • For Windows, check whether hardware-reserved memory accounts for part of the installed amount recognized by the system.

You need a report for technical support

Record the device model, operating-system version, installed RAM, total storage, available space, and whether the number came from internal, external, or removable storage. On Windows, the About page supplies model and Windows details alongside installed RAM. On a Mac, System Report provides a broader hardware and software inventory. For iPhone and iPad, the Settings storage page and the computer-connected storage bar provide complementary views. On Android, include the manufacturer, exact model designation, software version, and whether the storage figure includes an SD card.

How do I check how much storage I have?

Use your platform’s storage page: Settings > System > Storage on Windows, the Storage view in Mac System Settings, Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage on Apple mobile devices, and Settings > Storage on Android. Read both total capacity and available space.

How do I check RAM and ROM on my phone?

Check storage in the phone’s Storage page. For RAM, Android models may show installed memory in an About phone, Device information, or Memory page, but there is no universal Google path. Apple’s cited iPhone and iPad storage instructions do not provide a general installed-RAM screen.

Is ROM the same as storage?

In everyday phone specifications, “ROM” usually means built-in persistent storage. Current system menus generally call it storage, capacity, or device storage. It is different from RAM, which holds information used by running programs.

What is the difference between total and available storage?

Total storage is the device’s nominal capacity. Available storage is what remains after the operating system, formatting, preinstalled software, recovery data, and your files use space. Available space changes; total capacity is the specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does RAM Plus show my phone’s real RAM?

No. RAM Plus or another virtual-memory feature can use storage to help manage workloads, but it does not change the amount of installed physical RAM. Use an installed-memory figure from the manufacturer or an appropriate device-information page.

Why does my phone have less storage free than expected?

Apps, photos, videos, downloads, cached data, system files, and updates can consume space. On Android, inspect both internal storage and any SD card in Files by Google. On iPhone or iPad, review the app list and Apple’s recommendations.

How much free storage should an Android phone have?

Google Android Help gives general guidance that a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. It is not a guaranteed threshold for every model or symptom, but it is a useful warning to review large files and apps before the device becomes crowded.

Can I use an SD card to increase RAM?

An SD card adds removable storage for supported files and, on some phones, selected app data. It does not increase installed physical RAM. Android features that use storage as virtual memory are also not the same as adding a RAM module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a paid app to check RAM or storage?

No. The built-in pages described here are sufficient for the basic checks. A paid utility is not required to read installed RAM, total storage, or available space on these platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I record when checking a device for support?

Write down the exact model, operating-system version, installed RAM, total storage, available space, and whether the storage is internal, external, or removable. This prevents confusion between similar models and changing free-space readings.

Why is current memory use not a hardware specification?

Running apps, background services, and system caching constantly change memory use. Installed RAM is the physical capacity reported by the system; a live usage number is only a snapshot.

How can I tell whether an Android storage figure includes an SD card?

Use Files by Google and look for separate device and SD-card summaries. Treat the internal-device figure and removable-card figure as different locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do iPhone storage totals change after I do nothing?

Apple notes that cached and temporary data may not count in exactly the same way as permanent files. Categories can therefore change as the system manages temporary content.

The Bottom Line

Use the built-in information page for your platform: Windows About and Storage, Mac System Report and Storage, iPhone or iPad Storage, or Android Storage and Files by Google. Keep installed RAM separate from live memory use, and total storage separate from available space. When Android does not show a physical-RAM figure, use the manufacturer’s exact model specification rather than guessing from virtual-memory features.
