To price a PlayStation 2 game defensibly, identify the exact release and condition, then compare several recent sold transactions for matching copies. A guide site’s number is only an estimate; an active listing is an asking price, not proof that anyone paid it.

This method works for one game or an entire collection, including the common question from PAL sellers: should a game with its manual use the loose or CIB price? The answer depends on everything actually included and on the category used by the comparable sales.

What determines a PS2 game’s price?

There is no single value for “a PS2 game.” The practical price is a combination of the title, release variant, region, completeness, physical condition, sale date and marketplace. Two discs with the same cover name can produce very different results if one is a Greatest Hits reprint, one is an original black-label release, or one is missing its case.

  • Title: Record the exact game, including subtitles and numbered editions.
  • Release or print variant: Distinguish original/black-label copies, Greatest Hits or other reprints, collector editions and bundled releases.
  • Region: PAL, North American and Japanese copies are separate markets. A US estimate should not be applied automatically to a PAL game.
  • Completeness: Loose disc, disc with case, disc with manual, complete-in-box (CIB) and sealed/new are different categories.
  • Condition and testing: Note scratches, cracks, label damage, sun fading, missing inserts and whether the disc was tested. State “tested” only after you have actually checked it.
  • Sale context: Record the transaction date, marketplace, geography, currency, shipping treatment and whether the copy was graded or sealed.

These details define whether another sale is genuinely comparable. A high price may reflect a sealed or graded copy, an unusual edition, included extras or shipping rather than a normal complete copy.

Step 1: Identify the exact copy in your hands

Write an identification record

Before searching, make a short record from the physical item and its case. Include the title as printed on the spine, the region rating mark (such as PAL), the publisher, the catalogue or product number when visible, and any “Greatest Hits,” “Platinum,” “Classics” or collector-edition wording. Photograph the disc label, spine, front and back cover, and the manual if you are preparing a sale.

Choose the correct completeness category

Use the category that describes what a buyer will receive, not the category that produces the highest number. A loose copy is normally a disc without its original case and manual. “Item and box” means the disc and case but no manual; “item and manual” means the disc and manual but no case. CIB generally means the original disc, case and manual, with the guide’s definition taking priority if a particular marketplace uses a narrower one. A sealed/new copy must still be genuinely factory sealed.

Copy in your possession Price category to compare What to disclose
Disc only Loose Disc condition, label and whether tested
Disc and original case, no manual Item and box (or the marketplace’s equivalent) Case condition and missing manual
Disc and manual, no original case Item and manual Manual completeness and replacement case, if any
Disc, original case and manual CIB/complete Originality, inserts, artwork and condition
Factory-sealed copy New/sealed Seal integrity, tears, cracks and any grading

A manual by itself does not make a copy CIB. If the original case is missing, compare with item-and-manual sales or with the closest clearly described category, and explain the difference in your listing.

Step 2: Start with guide estimates, but treat them as a range

Price guides are useful for triage and for finding the right categories. The cited PS2 guide separates loose, CIB and new values and its individual game pages can further separate item-and-box and item-and-manual. Those figures are estimates derived from sold listings on eBay and other marketplaces; they are not guaranteed offers.

For orientation, the PS2 page for God of War displayed these illustrative estimates when accessed for this guide:

Category Displayed estimate
Loose $10.97
Item and box $14.64
Item and manual $15.00
Complete $18.31
New/sealed $49.48

These are title-specific snapshots, not a market-wide PS2 statistic. Guide values change, and the page does not promise that a seller will receive the displayed amount. Recheck the page immediately before publishing or pricing, and preserve the region path that matches your copy; PAL and Japan pages are separate from a US-market figure.

Step 3: Use sold transactions as your evidence

Search the exact title and variant

On a marketplace with completed-sale filters, search the title together with the region and print variant. For example, add “PAL,” “Greatest Hits,” or “black label” where appropriate. Exclude bundles unless you are valuing a bundle, and avoid results whose photos or descriptions do not establish what is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filter for completed or sold listings

Active listings show what sellers hope to receive. Sold records show a price at which a buyer and seller actually completed a transaction. The cited guide describes its historic sales as completed transactions and excludes unsold items. Use those records as the transaction evidence, while retaining the guide only as an estimate and search aid.

Capture the fields that affect comparability

  • Sale date and the displayed item price.
  • Marketplace, country and currency; do not silently convert currencies or assume shipping was included.
  • Exact release/print and region.
  • Loose, box, manual, complete or sealed status.
  • Condition, tested status and any grading.
  • What the description and photographs actually show.

Read several recent relevant records instead of copying one result. A single unusually high sale can be a different edition, a sealed or graded copy, a listing with extras, a shipping amount folded into the total, or a misclassified item.

How to read a sold listing critically

Do not rely on a search-result title alone. Open each promising record and compare the photographs with the description. A listing may use “complete” in its headline while showing a missing manual, a replacement case or a different print on the disc. Conversely, a seller may describe a copy briefly while the photographs establish that the original case and manual are present. Record what is actually visible and mark anything unresolved as “not stated.”

Check the sale date before combining records. A transaction from an older period can still be useful, but it should not automatically carry the same weight as a recent sale when guide values or demand have moved. Keep the date beside every price so a later reader can see whether the estimate is current or historical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shipping deserves its own note. If the marketplace displays item price and shipping separately, record both and explain which figure you are comparing. Do not assume that a high total represents a higher game value when it may include postage. Likewise, do not subtract or add a universal shipping amount: treatment varies by marketplace, country and listing.

Use geography and currency as comparison labels, not as hidden adjustments. A PAL sale in one country and a PAL sale in another may be relevant, but the currency and marketplace still need to remain visible. The available guides do not establish a universal conversion or cross-region percentage, so report the original figures and explain any decision to place them in one range.

Step 4: Build a defensible estimate

Make a small comparable-sales table

For one game, collect a handful of matching sold records when available. A simple worksheet keeps unlike copies from being averaged together.

Date Region/print Completeness Condition/testing Price and currency Notes
Enter the sale date Match your copy Loose, box, manual, CIB or sealed Describe only what is stated Record as displayed Shipping, extras or uncertainty

Do not put a placeholder or a guess into a cell: if a comparable field is not established, mark it “not stated” and treat that sale cautiously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the cluster, not the outlier

When several comparable sales cluster together, that cluster is more informative than the highest or lowest result. Exclude or separately label sales with a different print, region, completeness level, sealed status or unexplained condition. If only one weak comparable exists, report a wide, qualified estimate rather than false precision.

Keep guide and transaction numbers separate

A practical note might read: “Guide estimate: $X for CIB; recent matching sold records observed at Y–Z in the stated currency.” Never present the guide figure as a guaranteed sale price, and never call an active listing fair market value merely because it is the cheapest or most expensive result.

Turn the estimate into a buying or selling decision

For a sale, use the comparable cluster to choose an asking range, then state whether your number includes shipping and fees. A price near the observed cluster is easier to defend than a number copied from an active listing. If the copy has a defect or an uncertain variant, position it separately from clean, clearly identified examples rather than hiding the uncertainty in an average.

For a purchase, compare the seller’s total cost with the same cluster. An asking price below the cluster is not automatically a bargain if the disc is untested, the region is wrong for your console, or the case and manual shown in comparable sales are absent. Conversely, a higher ask may be explainable by a sealed, graded or uncommon edition, but only if the listing proves that distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How condition changes the comparison

Inspect the disc before calling it tested

Check the playing surface under good light for deep scratches, cracks around the centre hub, clouding, label damage and signs of resurfacing. Test the disc in a compatible PS2 when you can and record what was tested. If you did not test it, say so. A guide on PS2 pricing cautions that some disc degradation cannot be repaired; do not promise that polishing or resurfacing will restore a problematic disc.

Inspect case, artwork and manual

Look for a genuine original case, intact hinges, replacement trays, water damage, writing, torn pages, missing inserts and faded artwork. A replacement case can make a copy presentable but does not automatically make it equivalent to a sale with the original case. Photograph defects so a buyer can assess the same evidence you used.

Separate sealed and graded sales

Factory-sealed and graded copies belong in their own comparison set. They should not be averaged with ordinary CIB copies, even when the title and region match.

Pricing PAL, Greatest Hits and other regional or print variants

For a PAL game, use PAL sold records and a PAL guide path where available. Keep the currency visible and state the marketplace country. There is no universal cross-region adjustment established here, so do not convert a US result into a PAL price by applying a fixed percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, black-label and Greatest Hits copies are not interchangeable merely because the disc runs on the same console. Search and compare the print wording and packaging shown in the sold listing. If a seller’s copy is ambiguous, describe the uncertainty and price from the lower-confidence comparable set rather than asserting a premium.

Pricing a large PS2 collection efficiently

Inventory before valuing

  1. List every title, region, print wording and disc count.
  2. Assign each item a completeness category and note condition/testing.
  3. Photograph unusual editions, sealed copies and visibly scarce titles.
  4. Mark duplicates and obvious common sports, movie tie-ins and Greatest Hits copies for triage.

Check standout titles individually

Search exact sold records for titles that are unusual, complete, sealed, in excellent condition or repeatedly appearing at materially different prices. This is where the extra time is most likely to affect the result.

Bundle common titles only as a workflow choice

For common sports, movie tie-ins and other low-demand-looking items, checking every disc separately may cost more time than it saves. Sorting them for a bundle is a practical workflow suggestion, not a guarantee that a bundle will sell or that its per-game price will match individual sales. State the bundle contents, region, completeness mix and defects clearly.

Keep the collection total honest

Do not add the highest guide category for every item when the collection contains loose discs, incomplete cases and uncertain variants. Tally each category separately, then show which titles were checked individually and which were grouped for efficiency. A collection total is only as defensible as the inventory behind it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying with the same method

When buying, compare the seller’s photographs and description against sold records, not against the seller’s headline alone. Confirm that the listed copy is the same region and print, that the case and manual are really present, and that condition claims are supported. An asking price above a guide estimate may still be justified by an uncommon variant or exceptional condition, but it is not evidence of value until comparable sales support it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using an active listing as the market price: switch to completed/sold filters.
  • Mixing loose and CIB copies: create separate comparison groups.
  • Ignoring Greatest Hits or region: add the print and region to the search phrase.
  • Copying one spectacular sale: collect several dated records and investigate the description.
  • Assuming a manual means CIB: check for the original case and use the item-and-manual category when appropriate.
  • Calling a disc tested without testing: disclose untested status instead.
  • Promising a guide price: present it as an estimate and show the sold evidence separately.
  • Converting currencies without context: retain the original currency and marketplace geography.

A repeatable worksheet

For each game, save: title; region; print/edition; disc count; loose/box/manual/CIB/sealed category; disc, case and manual condition; tested status; guide estimate and the date checked; several matching sold records with dates, currencies and prices; exclusions and their reasons; and your resulting asking or buying range. This record makes the number explainable and easy to update when the market moves.

Final checks before you publish or buy

  1. Verify that the title, region and print in your notes match the physical disc and case.
  2. Confirm that every comparison uses the same completeness category, or explain why a near match was retained.
  3. Reopen the photographs and descriptions for the sales supporting your range.
  4. Separate item price, shipping, currency and marketplace rather than combining them silently.
  5. Write down the date you checked the guide and sold records, because displayed values can change.
  6. Describe defects and testing limits plainly so the next buyer is judging the same copy.

If those checks leave only one uncertain sale, that is a reason to qualify the estimate, not to manufacture precision. A transparent range with its assumptions is more useful than a confident number that mixes categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a PS2 game with its manual priced as CIB?

Not automatically. CIB normally requires the original disc, case and manual. If the case is missing, compare with item-and-manual sales; if the manual is missing, use the item-and-box category or its marketplace equivalent.

How many sold listings should I check?

Check several recent, genuinely matching records whenever they exist. If only one weak comparable is available, widen and qualify the estimate instead of presenting precise certainty.

Does a guide price guarantee what I will receive?

No. It is an estimate derived from historical transactions; your result depends on the exact copy, timing, marketplace, presentation and buyer.

Should I use an active listing if no sold records appear?

Use active listings only as clues about how sellers describe the item, not as proof of value. If no strong sold comparison exists, state that limitation and give a wider, qualified range rather than treating an asking price as a completed sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a sealed PS2 game comparable with a complete copy?

No. Factory-sealed and graded copies should be compared with other sealed or graded records, not averaged with ordinary CIB sales.

How should I price a collection of common games?

Inventory the collection, identify standout or unusual titles individually, and consider bundling common sports, movie tie-ins and similar copies as a workflow choice. Disclose the bundle’s contents, regions, completeness mix and defects; bundling does not guarantee a particular per-game result.

What if the listing does not say whether the disc was tested?

Treat testing as not stated. Do not describe the copy as tested unless you performed the test yourself, and keep that uncertainty visible when comparing prices.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact PS2 release, match its region and completeness, and use several recent sold records—not active asking prices—to set a qualified range. Keep guide estimates, shipping, currency, condition and uncertainty separate so your buying or selling number can be explained and updated.
