Before downloading, check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility label, open its rating details, then compare recent player reports on ProtonDB. Valve’s label describes the expected experience on Steam Deck; ProtonDB reports show how games have behaved on individual Linux systems. Neither is a guarantee for every PC, but together they help you spot likely caveats before committing to a large download.
Check the Steam listing for Valve’s compatibility label
- Find the exact game in Steam. Search for its title and confirm the edition or app entry you intend to install. Reports for a different edition may describe a different build or experience.
- Look at the Steam Deck compatibility result. Check the game’s Store page or its entry in the Steam Deck Library. Valve uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program explains the review, and Steam Support’s troubleshooting guide describes the labels.
- Open the rating details. Don’t stop at the badge. The details can explain why a game is Playable or Unsupported and what limitations to expect.
What each label tells you
- Verified: The game met Valve’s criteria for the Steam Deck experience.
- Playable: The game can be played, but may need configuration or have other caveats. Check the details for specifics.
- Unsupported: Valve found that the game does not meet the expected Steam Deck experience.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested the game for compatibility yet. This is not evidence that the game fails.
Understand what Valve’s rating measures
Valve reviews games for controller and input behavior, display and legibility, how seamless the experience is, and system support. Where Proton is involved, the review also considers whether the game and its middleware work through Proton. That means a rating reflects more than whether the game launches: usability can affect the result.
The rating is specifically about the Steam Deck. A non-Verified result does not, by itself, tell you whether the game will work on a desktop Linux PC. Hardware, distribution, controls, display, and other aspects of the setup can differ.
Check recent reports on ProtonDB
- Search the game on ProtonDB. You can find it by title, or use the game’s app ID with the format
https://www.protondb.com/app/<appid>, documented on Valve’s Proton wiki. - Read individual reports, not just the aggregate badge. ProtonDB is a community reporting site for Linux and Steam Deck players using Proton. A summary can help you find a game, but individual reports provide the setup and caveats needed to judge whether a result is relevant to you. See ProtonDB.
- Prioritize recent, specific reports. Look for the report date, device or hardware, Linux distribution, Proton version, whether the game launched and played normally, and any fixes or problems. An older successful report may no longer match the game after an update.
Compare reports that disagree
Two players can get different results without either report being useless. Compare the conditions and the type of problem before deciding how likely it is that the game will work for you.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Platform: Separate Steam Deck results from desktop Linux results; distribution and hardware may also matter.
- Recency: Prefer recent reports, especially when the game has had a meaningful update since older reports were filed.
- Compatibility tool: Check which Proton version or other tool the player selected.
- Severity: Distinguish a failure to launch or a crash from a broken online feature or a minor visual or input issue.
- Work required: Note whether the game worked by default or required settings changes, launch options, or another workaround.
- Acceptability: Decide whether the reported workaround and remaining limitations are acceptable for your use.
ProtonDB reports are player observations, not a promise that the same result will reproduce on your machine. Game, middleware, Proton, and SteamOS updates can also change compatibility. Valve describes ongoing efforts to improve the Deck and keep ratings current, but does not establish a fixed re-review interval in the linked guidance.
Should you install a game marked Unknown or Unsupported?
Unknown means there is no Valve test result to rely on; it does not mean the game is incompatible. Check ProtonDB for recent reports matching your platform and setup. For Unsupported, read Valve’s details to understand the issue and look for current community reports that address it. The label is a useful warning about the Deck experience, not a definitive prediction for every desktop Linux configuration.

Use a compatibility tool after installation only as troubleshooting
If an installed game has problems, Steam Support documents a per-game option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool. This setting is a troubleshooting choice, not a compatibility certification.
Recommended Free Tools
- In Steam, open Library, right-click the game (or open its gear menu), and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select a listed tool and try launching the game.
- Check which build Steam installs. Steam Support notes that forcing a tool can cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed.
Changing the tool can help test a reported workaround, but it does not establish that the game will work on your setup. Compare your result with reports that identify the same tool and platform.
