To check a Pixel’s current charge or charging estimate, open Settings > Battery. To check battery health, use Settings > Battery > Battery health—but that screen is available only on Pixel 8a and later. Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, have a separate Battery diagnostics tool. Charge level, health status, and diagnostics answer different questions, so your phone may show one without showing the others.
Those distinctions matter when a phone seems to charge slowly, stops at 80%, or has shorter runtime. A percentage tells you how much energy is left now; a health estimate describes the battery’s condition relative to when it was new; diagnostics can help evaluate a device even when a dedicated health page is not offered. The menu names and supported measurements depend on the Pixel model and software version.
Check the current charge and whether the phone is charging
Open Settings > Battery to see how much charge remains. When the phone is plugged in, the page can also show an estimate of how long it will take to reach a full charge. After connecting a charger, allow a moment for the estimate to appear. Google Pixel Help describes the charging view this way: “When it’s charging, you can see how long until your battery will be fully charged.”
The estimate is useful for planning, but it is not a fixed promise. Charging speed can change with the adapter, cable, outlet, phone temperature, current battery level, and whether the phone is being used. If the estimate is missing immediately after plugging in, wait briefly and check again before treating that as a fault.

To display the charge as a number beside the status-bar battery icon, go to Settings > Battery and turn on Battery percentage. This is a display setting; it does not measure battery health. A phone can show 100% today and still have a reduced maximum capacity compared with its original battery.
For a record of what used the charge since the last full charge, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. The screen breaks down usage by app and system activity. Use it to identify a navigation app, display setting, mobile connection, or other process that consumed power. High usage by an app is not the same thing as a worn battery, and a worn battery can exist even when no single app dominates the usage list.
Check battery health, capacity, and cycle count
Battery health screen: Pixel 8a and later
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery health.
- Read the health status. If the Battery capacity option appears, tap it to view Google’s estimate of remaining capacity compared with the battery’s original capacity.
- To find the cycle count, open Settings > About phone > Battery information.
Google’s current Pixel guidance, checked October 13, 2026, says battery health status is available on Pixel 8a and later. It specifically says Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro do not indicate battery health status. A missing Battery health page on one of those models is therefore not evidence that the battery has failed. It means that Google does not expose that particular health-status feature on the listed models.

Do not infer support solely from the Android version or from the presence of a Battery menu. Google groups availability by device generation, and labels can change with software updates. Check the support instructions for the exact model if the path above does not appear.
Battery Diagnostics: Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold
For a built-in diagnostic rather than the health-status screen, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics. Google lists this tool for Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Diagnostics are a separate feature: availability of Battery diagnostics does not mean the phone can show the Battery health status or capacity estimate.
This distinction explains why two recent Pixels can expose different information. A Pixel 7 may offer diagnostics but not a Battery health status page, while a Pixel 8a can offer health status, capacity, and cycle information. Use the feature your model actually provides instead of trying to substitute a charge percentage or a diagnostics result for a missing health estimate.
| What you want to check | Where to look | Availability in Google’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Remaining charge and charging-time estimate | Settings > Battery | Google documents this Battery page for checking charge and, while charging, the estimate until full. |
| Battery health status and estimated capacity | Settings > Battery > Battery health | Pixel 8a and later; Google specifically lists Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro as not indicating battery health status. |
| Cycle count | Settings > About phone > Battery information | Pixel 8a and later, according to Google’s battery-health guidance. |
| Battery diagnostics | Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics | Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. |
Google’s model availability and labels can change. If a menu is missing, confirm the instructions for your exact Pixel model rather than assuming every Pixel has the same health screen. A missing menu is a compatibility limitation; an Unavailable status on a supported phone is a measurement limitation. Those are different situations and call for different next steps.
What the health status and capacity estimate mean
Google describes three possible health statuses:
- Normal: The battery’s capacity is within normal limits.
- Reduced: The battery’s reached capacity is below 80%.
- Unavailable: The phone cannot determine the status.
Where a capacity estimate is available, it compares the battery’s estimated remaining capacity with its original capacity. Google cautions that initial health values are based on lab results and may differ from the battery’s actual condition. Treat the figure as an estimate, not a precise physical measurement or a promise of how many hours the phone will last. Runtime also depends on how the phone is used.
For example, two phones with the same health status can have different screen-on time because one is using mobile data, navigation, high brightness, or demanding apps more often. Conversely, a phone with a Normal status can still drain quickly if an app or system activity is consuming unusual power. Check Battery usage as well as health status when investigating runtime.
Unavailable does not mean the battery is necessarily bad. It means the phone cannot determine a status from the information it has. Check for software updates and model-specific guidance, then use Battery diagnostics when your model supports it. If the phone also shows charging problems, overheating, or a battery-icon question mark, move to Google’s support or authorized repair options rather than treating the estimate as a do-it-yourself measurement.

Google’s stated cycle guidance differs by model family. The cycle figures below are manufacturer expectations, not guarantees for an individual battery. Google’s support pages did not show a publication date in the material available for these guidelines; figures reflect Google’s current guidance checked October 13, 2026.

|---|---|---|
| Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold | Up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles. | Google recommends replacement below 80% remaining capacity or when the applicable cycle threshold is reached. |
| Pixel 8a and later | Up to 80% capacity for about 1,000 charge cycles. | Google recommends replacement below 80% remaining capacity or when the applicable cycle threshold is reached. |
A cycle count is not the same as the number of times you plug in. It is useful context for Google’s guidance, but reaching a stated threshold does not prove that a particular battery has suddenly failed. The figures describe when a battery is expected to retain up to 80% of its original capacity under Google’s stated guidance, not a guaranteed expiration date.
If the phone reports Reduced, the capacity is below Google’s 80% reference point. That does not automatically make the phone unsafe or unusable, but it can explain shorter runtime and may make battery replacement worth considering. Google recommends replacement below 80% remaining capacity or when the applicable cycle threshold is reached for the covered device families. Use Google’s repair and warranty options to determine eligibility and service details.
Why a Pixel may stop below 100%
Charging optimization can delay a full charge or cap it
On supported phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization to review the charging behavior. Adaptive Charging learns your usual charging habits and aims to finish nearer the time you normally unplug the phone. Google says learning can take about 14 days, so a delayed full-charge estimate may be intentional. It is designed around a regular routine, so changing your schedule can make the timing look inconsistent while the feature learns.
The 80% charge limit is available on Pixel 6a and later. If it is enabled, a phone stopping around 80% may be following the selected limit rather than failing to charge. Check Charging optimization before replacing a cable or assuming the battery is defective. The limit is a setting, not a health reading.
Google says supported Pixel phones should reach 100% every tenth cycle to help keep capacity readings accurate. For that calibration cycle, Google advises leaving the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes after 100% appears. This instruction is about maintaining the accuracy of the phone’s estimate; it is not a requirement to leave the phone at 100% after every charge.
Automatic battery protection can temporarily limit charging
Google separately describes automatic protection for Pixel 3 and later on Android 11 and later. During prolonged charging or high-temperature conditions, charging may temporarily be limited to about 70–80%, and the screen may show Protecting your battery. The phone can therefore stop below 100% even when the charger, cable, and battery are functioning as intended.
Google says the feature turns off when those conditions no longer apply. At that time, you can choose Charge to full in Settings or restart the phone to override the limit. If the phone is hot, first move it to a cooler location and avoid demanding use while it charges. A temporary protection limit is different from the 80% Charging optimization setting: one is automatic protection under prolonged charging or heat, while the other is a user-selected charging behavior.
How to compare what different Pixel models show
When comparing Pixels, compare three separate capabilities: the charge and time-to-full estimate, the health-status and capacity screen, and Battery diagnostics. Do not use a newer-looking Battery menu as proof that every model reports the same measurements.

- Charge status: The Settings > Battery page is where Google documents remaining charge and, while charging, the estimate until full.
- Health and capacity: Pixel 8a and later can show the Battery health status, with estimated capacity available when the option appears. The specifically listed Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro do not indicate battery health status.
- Diagnostics: Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, have Battery diagnostics even when a health-status screen is not available.
- Cycle count: Google places this under About phone > Battery information on Pixel 8a and later.
For charging accessories, compare model compatibility, supported wattage, connector, and wired or wireless support before comparing the accessory price. Google names the Google 45W USB-C Power Charger as a compatible example, but the maximum supported wattage is model-specific. A 45W charger does not make every Pixel charge at 45W, and a higher-wattage adapter is not automatically a better choice for every phone.

Troubleshoot slow charging or charging that does not start
- Confirm the status. Connect the phone, wait briefly, then check Settings > Battery for a charging indication and an estimated time to full, if available. The estimate may take a moment to appear.
- Check the charging path. Verify the cable, power adapter, and outlet, and make sure the equipment is compatible with your Pixel. If the battery is very low, leave the phone connected for several minutes before deciding that charging has not begun. If possible, check each part of the path rather than changing several variables at once.
- Look for an intentional limit. Review Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization if your phone offers that menu. Adaptive Charging, an 80% limit, or automatic battery protection can explain a delayed or limited charge.
- Consider temperature and prolonged charging. If the display says Protecting your battery, allow the phone to cool and wait for the automatic protection condition to end. Google says you can later choose Charge to full or restart the phone to override the temporary limit.
- Check the model’s charging specifications. Google names its 45W USB-C Power Charger as one compatible example, but directs owners to the Battery and charging specifications for their exact phone to confirm supported wattage. A higher-wattage charger does not mean every Pixel will charge at that wattage.
- Use the right diagnostic path. On Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, open Battery diagnostics. On Pixel 8a and later, also review Battery health, capacity when available, and cycle count. Do not interpret a missing health page on a listed unsupported model as a charging failure.
- Get help if the problem persists. If Google’s charging troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, review Google’s support, repair, and warranty options. If a question mark appears on the battery icon, Google advises seeking an authorized repair inspection or contacting support.
The charger is optional equipment for charging; it is not needed to check charge level, health status, or diagnostics. Google’s 45W USB-C Power Charger is an example, not a universal requirement, and no particular accessory should be assumed to have the same performance on every Pixel. Charging behavior and menu availability vary by Pixel model and software, so use the specifications and help for your exact device when a step does not match what you see.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing percentage with health: 80% charge means 80% of the battery’s currently available charge, not necessarily 80% of its original capacity.
- Assuming every Pixel has Battery health: Google specifically excludes Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro from battery-health status.
- Treating diagnostics as a capacity meter: Battery diagnostics and the Battery health screen are separate features with different availability.
- Calling every 80% stop a fault: An 80% limit, Adaptive Charging, or automatic protection can all change charging behavior.
- Reading cycle guidance as a deadline: About 800 or 1,000 cycles are Google’s stated expectations, not a guarantee that a battery fails at that exact number.
- Buying by wattage alone: Confirm the exact Pixel’s supported wattage and charging specifications before choosing an adapter.
