To check a stock’s NSE F&O ban status, consult NSE’s Security in ban period for the next trade date – F&O segment file and note the session it covers. To check whether the stock remains eligible for F&O contracts, use NSE’s List of Underlying and Information and its F&O Stock Introduction and Exclusion Tracker. These are separate checks: a stock can remain an eligible underlying while temporarily in the ban period.

What the two checks tell you

“Is this stock in the F&O ban?” and “Is this stock eligible for F&O contracts?” are different questions, answered by different NSE information. The ban is a temporary trading restriction associated with aggregate open interest (OI) approaching the stock’s market-wide position limit (MWPL). Eligibility is the stock’s status as an underlying in the derivatives segment under NSE’s selection and review framework.

Question What to check What the result means
Is the stock in the ban for the next session? NSE’s Security in ban period for the next trade date – F&O segment file on the Market Wide Position Limit page. Whether the stock’s derivatives are subject to the position-reducing-only restriction for the session identified by the file.
Is the stock an F&O underlying, and what contracts are listed? NSE’s Contract Information page, including List of Underlying and Information and the F&O Stock Introduction and Exclusion Tracker. Whether the stock appears in NSE’s current underlying and contract information, and whether introduction or exclusion information is recorded.

Neither check replaces the other. Presence in the underlying list does not mean the stock is free of a temporary ban on a particular session. Conversely, presence in a daily ban file does not by itself mean NSE has removed the stock from F&O.

How to check whether a stock is in the ban

  1. Identify the exact security. Match the company name and exchange symbol. Where names are similar, rely on the symbol as well as the name so you do not mistake one listed security for another.
  2. Open NSE’s Market Wide Position Limit page. Find the file named Security in ban period for the next trade date – F&O segment and open or download it.
  3. Check the file’s effective session. The file refers to the next trade date, not automatically to the calendar day on which you are viewing it. Check the relevant trading calendar, particularly around market holidays, and make sure the file is for the session you intend to discuss or trade.
  4. Search for the stock in the file. Match its name or symbol carefully. If it appears, report it as subject to the ban for the trade date covered by that file. If it does not appear, do not infer a status for some other session or treat an old copy as current; check the latest file applicable to the session in question.
  5. Record when you checked. If you share the result, state both the effective trade date and the date or time you checked. The file contents can change each trading day, so an undated screenshot or older report is not a reliable statement of current status.

The NSE reports catalog also lists date-filtered security-in-ban-period and combined-open-interest reports. These can help when you need a dated report rather than only the next-session file. Keep the report date with the result: a historical report establishes information for its own date, not the status of a later session.

What the ban restricts—and what it does not

NSE says securities in the next-trade-date ban file have crossed 95% of their MWPL. During the ban, clients and trading members may trade only to reduce positions through offsetting positions. Increasing open positions is restricted and can attract disciplinary action.

This is not a blanket prohibition on all trading or a rule that prevents a trader from closing or reducing a position. The distinction is the effect of the trade on the open position: permitted trades are for reduction through offsetting, while adding to open exposure is restricted. A ban-status check therefore matters when considering whether an intended F&O transaction would increase or reduce a position; it does not establish the outcome of a particular order or replace the applicable exchange and broker procedures.

The ban is tied to positions across exchanges, not just to a single NSE contract viewed in isolation. NSE Clearing’s position-limit guidance says the exchange considers aggregate futures-and-options OI across exchanges against the stock’s MWPL. A stock can consequently enter or leave the ban as aggregate OI changes, even though its status as an F&O underlying is a separate matter.

How the 95% trigger and 80% resumption level work

Under NSE Clearing’s published position-limit explanation, when aggregate OI across exchanges exceeds 95% of a stock’s MWPL, the exchange takes note of end-of-day open positions. From the next day, clients and trading members may trade only to reduce positions by offsetting. Normal trading resumes only after aggregate OI across exchanges falls to 80% or below of MWPL.

The two percentages serve different purposes. The 95% level is the ban trigger described in the guidance; the 80% level is the condition for normal trading to resume. Do not treat a fall below 95% as enough by itself to confirm that normal trading has resumed. Check the applicable official status for the relevant session.

NSE’s trading system also provides an alert when NSE open interest exceeds 60% of MWPL. That is an early warning threshold, not the ban trigger. It is important not to conflate the alert level with the cross-exchange 95% threshold used in the ban explanation.

NSE Clearing states: “The normal trading in the scrip is resumed only after the aggregate open interest across Exchanges comes down to 80% or below of the market wide position limit.” The quote describes the resumption condition; it does not mean that every stock below the ban trigger is automatically eligible to start trading normally at any moment. The applicable session status should still be checked.

How to verify F&O contract eligibility separately

  1. Open NSE’s Contract Information page. Use the exchange’s current contract-information resources rather than relying on a broker watchlist as proof of eligibility.
  2. Inspect “List of Underlying and Information.” Look for the exact stock name or symbol to establish whether it appears in the current underlying information.
  3. Review the listed contract information. Check the relevant contract specifications and available contract details shown by NSE. The underlying list answers the eligibility question; contract information helps identify the listed derivatives associated with it.
  4. Check the “F&O Stock Introduction and Exclusion Tracker.” Use the tracker to review introduction or exclusion information that may affect the stock’s segment status.
  5. Date your conclusion. The underlying list and tracker reflect current exchange information at the time of checking. If stating whether a stock is eligible, identify the date checked rather than presenting a past list as timeless.

A broker’s platform may display instruments available through that broker, but it is not a substitute for checking NSE’s current underlying list and tracker when the question is specifically about exchange eligibility. The broker view and the exchange’s underlying status answer different operational questions.

NSE’s published stock-selection criteria

NSE’s selection-criteria page says new F&O securities are selected using rolling six-month market data and published thresholds. The listed criteria include market ranking, trading activity, order size, position-limit capacity and deliverable value.

Published criterion NSE threshold or test
Market standing Among the top 500 by average daily market capitalisation and traded value, using rolling six-month data.
Median quarter-sigma order size At least ₹75 lakh.
Market-wide position limit At least ₹1,500 crore.
Average daily cash-market deliverable value At least ₹35 crore.

These are eligibility criteria, not a live-status lookup. The rolling-data tests and review framework can change a stock’s status over time, so a stock that appears to meet a threshold—or appeared on an older list—should not be assumed to be currently eligible without checking NSE’s current underlying information. The criteria also do not tell you whether the stock is in the ban for a particular session; that requires the daily ban-file check.

How a stock can leave F&O, and what happens to existing contracts

NSE says failure to meet any listed selection criterion for three continuous months can result in exit, subject to its framework and a minimum of six months since the stock’s introduction. This is a review-based eligibility process, not the same event as crossing the daily MWPL ban threshold.

When a stock is excluded, NSE says existing unexpired contracts may be permitted to trade until expiry, while no fresh month contract is issued. Thus, exclusion does not necessarily mean every outstanding contract disappears immediately. The specific introduction or exclusion record and current contract information should be checked for the stock concerned.

NSE further says an excluded stock is not considered for re-inclusion for one year and must meet the criteria for six consecutive months before it can be reintroduced, subject to SEBI approval. These conditions describe the published framework; they are not a shortcut for deciding current eligibility without consulting the exchange’s current list and tracker.

Common mistakes when checking ban or eligibility status

  • Calling a next-session file “today’s status” without checking its date. The file is explicitly for the next trade date. State the covered session, especially if checking after market hours, on a holiday, or before a nonstandard trading session.
  • Treating a ban as removal from F&O. The daily ban is an exposure-based trading restriction. Removal follows a separate eligibility review process.
  • Assuming a stock can only be traded in the ban to close completely. The published restriction permits position-reducing trades through offsetting positions; it is not a blanket ban on reducing exposure.
  • Confusing the 60% alert with the ban threshold. NSE’s system alert above 60% of NSE OI is an early warning. The ban guidance describes a 95% aggregate-OI trigger across exchanges.
  • Assuming a single-exchange position reading answers the aggregate question. The ban framework refers to aggregate OI across exchanges relative to MWPL.
  • Using an old eligibility list or a watchlist as proof. Eligibility uses rolling criteria and can change. Check the current NSE underlying list and introduction/exclusion tracker.
  • Reading a historical report as a live status. A date-filtered report is evidence for the date it covers. It does not establish the stock’s status for a later session.

A reliable way to report what you found

Use wording that makes the status and its date unambiguous. For example: “NSE’s next-trade-date ban file checked on [date] covers the [trade date] session; [stock name and symbol] [appears/does not appear] in that file.” For eligibility, report separately whether the stock appears in NSE’s underlying information and what the introduction/exclusion tracker shows as of the date checked.

Do not combine the two statements into “the stock is eligible, so it is not banned” or “the stock is banned, so it is no longer eligible.” A concise but accurate status report identifies the source, the exact security, the session or check date, and which of the two questions the result answers.

Putting the checks together

For a quick, defensible answer, make two separate notes rather than one blended status. First record the ban-file result, its next trade date and when you checked it. Then record whether the stock appears in the current underlying information and what the tracker says. If the first check shows a ban while the second shows the stock as an underlying, report both facts: the stock remains listed as an underlying but is subject to the position-reducing restriction for the identified session.

If the underlying list and tracker do not appear to agree, do not resolve the discrepancy by relying on a broker screen or an old screenshot. Recheck that you have the exact symbol and the latest exchange information, and identify the dates of the records you compared. The sources answer different questions and may be updated on different schedules: the ban file is session-specific, while eligibility is reviewed under rolling criteria. A date attached to each result prevents a temporary restriction or an older eligibility record from being presented as a permanent status.

There is no single threshold that answers both questions. The 95% and 80% levels explain entry into and exit from a position-limit restriction. The top-500 ranking and rupee-denominated criteria help describe selection and continued eligibility. Neither set of figures is a replacement for the corresponding current exchange list or report.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if a stock is in the F&O ban today?

Open NSE’s Market Wide Position Limit page and check the “Security in ban period for the next trade date – F&O segment” file. It covers the next trade date, so confirm the effective session against the trading calendar. If you are reporting the result, include both the trade date covered and when you checked the file.

Does an F&O ban mean the stock has been removed from derivatives?

No. The ban is a temporary position restriction linked to aggregate open interest and MWPL. Removal from the F&O segment follows a separate eligibility review. Check the underlying list and the introduction/exclusion tracker independently of the daily ban file.

Can I reduce or close an F&O position while a stock is in the ban?

The published restriction permits clients and trading members to trade only to reduce positions through offsetting positions; increasing open positions is restricted and can attract disciplinary action. The ban is not described as a blanket prohibition on reducing exposure. Check the applicable exchange and broker procedures for a particular order.

Why does the 80% level matter if the ban starts at 95%?

The levels serve different functions. Aggregate OI across exchanges exceeding 95% of MWPL is the ban trigger described in NSE Clearing’s guidance. Normal trading resumes only after aggregate OI falls to 80% or below. A fall below 95% alone does not establish that normal trading has resumed; verify the official status for the session.

What are NSE’s published stock F&O selection thresholds?

NSE’s published criteria include a top-500 ranking by average daily market capitalisation and traded value using rolling six-month data, median quarter-sigma order size of at least ₹75 lakh, MWPL of at least ₹1,500 crore, and average daily cash-market deliverable value of at least ₹35 crore. These criteria explain the framework; check the current underlying list for a stock’s present status.

What happens when a stock no longer meets the eligibility criteria?

NSE says failure to meet any listed criterion for three continuous months can result in exit, subject to its framework and a minimum of six months since introduction. Existing unexpired contracts may be permitted to trade until expiry, while no fresh month contract is issued. The tracker and current contract information are the right places to verify a specific stock’s status.

Can a stock be eligible and in the ban at the same time?

Yes. Eligibility means the stock remains an underlying under NSE’s selection and review framework. The ban is a session-specific restriction caused by aggregate OI relative to MWPL. Confirm each status using its own NSE source.

The Bottom Line

Use NSE’s next-trade-date ban file for the session-specific MWPL restriction, and NSE’s underlying list and introduction/exclusion tracker for contract eligibility. A ban does not itself remove a stock from F&O: date-stamp both checks and keep their answers separate.
