Use the NJ TRANSIT station-to-station schedule search to plan a trip, then use DepartureVision for the latest departure, arrival, and track information at a station. For recurring journeys or service changes, add My Transit Alerts. The official NJ TRANSIT app brings these functions together: you can plan trips and view schedules without signing in, while an account is needed to purchase, store, or manage tickets.
Which NJ TRANSIT tool should you use?
NJ TRANSIT provides several status tools because a timetable and a live station board answer different questions. Start with the tool that matches the decision you need to make.

A practical sequence is: plan with the schedule search, check the station board shortly before leaving, and enable alerts if the trip matters enough to monitor automatically.
Find a scheduled train between two stations
Use a station-to-station schedule when you are deciding which train should work for your journey. It is the right starting point for a future trip because it describes the planned service rather than what is currently happening at a platform.

Use the NJ TRANSIT website
- Open the NJ TRANSIT website and go to the train schedule search in the Schedules and Fares area.
- Enter the station where you will board as the origin and the station where you will get off as the destination. Check the station names carefully, especially when a metropolitan area has more than one station.
- Choose the applicable service day. The schedule tool provides current weekday and weekend schedules, so do not assume a weekday result applies on Saturday or Sunday.
- Review the available itineraries and select a departure that fits your plans. Compare the displayed departure and arrival times, along with any route or connection information shown for that itinerary.
- Keep the selected schedule available for reference, but plan to check DepartureVision again near departure. A timetable is a plan; it is not the station’s live operating display.
The Schedules and Fares section also supports itinerary planning. That makes it useful when you know the two stations but have not yet chosen a specific train.
What a schedule result means
A scheduled departure is the time the service is planned to leave the origin station. A scheduled arrival is the planned time at the destination. These values help you choose a train and estimate when you will reach your destination, but they do not provide the latest platform status or track assignment. Use the live station display for those details.
When to use a weekday versus weekend schedule
Select the service period that matches the day you will travel. NJ TRANSIT publishes weekday and weekend schedule views; trains and departure times can differ between them. If your trip crosses midnight or involves a date change, verify that the selected day represents the departure you intend to take.

- Open the app and use its trip-planning or schedule function.
- Enter your origin and destination stations, then select the relevant travel day and itinerary.
- Review the proposed departure and arrival times before deciding which train to take.
- Use the app’s real-time information or DepartureVision function when you need the current station display rather than the planned timetable.
Do not create an account merely to look up a schedule. An account becomes relevant when you want to purchase, store, or manage tickets. Schedule access and ticket-account access are separate functions.
See current departures, arrivals, and track assignments with DepartureVision
DepartureVision is NJ TRANSIT’s station-departure tool. It displays train arrival and departure times and track assignments. You can use it on the NJ TRANSIT website or in the official app.
Check a station on the website
- Open DepartureVision.
- Select the station from which you plan to depart.
- Read the listed trains, including their displayed departure or arrival times and assigned tracks.
- Find the train that matches the service you selected in the schedule search. Compare the station display with your planned departure before heading to the platform.
- Select the train entry if you need more detail. DepartureVision shows the stations served by that train and estimated arrival information for those stops.
Use the live display in the app
The app provides access to the same type of real-time departure information. Open the station-departure view, choose your station, and inspect the current train list and track assignments. Selecting a train exposes its route stops and estimated arrival information.
Why the station view matters
A station board answers questions that a station-to-station timetable does not: which trains are currently being displayed for this station, what track assignment is shown, and what estimated arrival information is available after selecting a train. Check the station view close to departure because it is the appropriate place to look for the latest displayed operating information.

Set up My Transit Alerts for a recurring trip
My Transit Alerts sends notifications about selected rail trips and service changes. NJ TRANSIT supports app notifications, text messages, and email.
Configure an alert
- Open the My Transit Alerts setup in the NJ TRANSIT app or through the service-updates area.
- Choose the origin station and destination station for the journey you want to monitor.
- Enter the approximate departure time and return time that describe your usual travel window.
- Select the trains you want to follow.
- Choose how to receive the notices: app push notification, text message, email, or the channels offered during setup.
- Save the alert and review the selected stations, times, trains, and notification channel so the alert matches your actual trip.
Alerts are useful for changes affecting a selected journey. They do not replace a live station check when you are about to board: use DepartureVision for the current station display and track assignment.
A reliable pre-trip routine
For a one-time journey, the following order keeps planned information and live information separate.

- Plan: Search the origin and destination in Schedules and Fares, select the correct weekday or weekend view, and choose an itinerary.
- Confirm: Before leaving for the station, open DepartureVision and select the departure station. Check the listed train, displayed time, and track assignment.
- Inspect the route: Select the train in DepartureVision if you need to confirm its stops or view estimated arrival information.
- Monitor: If the trip is a regular commute or a service change would be especially disruptive, create a My Transit Alert for the relevant origin, destination, approximate times, and trains.
- Recheck after a change: If an alert or station display differs from your original plan, return to the live station view and reassess the train shown there before boarding.
How to handle differences between a timetable and the live display
It is normal for a planned timetable and a live station display to serve different purposes. The schedule search tells you which service is planned for the selected day and station pair. DepartureVision tells you what the selected station is currently displaying, including a track assignment and estimated information after you open a train.

- If the schedule search shows a train but you cannot find it in the selected station’s live list, verify the origin station and the travel day before relying on the result.
- If the live display lists a train with a time or track that differs from your earlier plan, use the current station display for the immediate departure decision and continue checking the listed train details.
- If you selected the wrong station, return to DepartureVision and choose the station where you will actually board. A live result for another station does not describe your platform.
- If you need destination timing rather than platform information, select the train entry to see its route stops and estimated arrival information.
Troubleshooting common lookup problems
The schedule result looks wrong
Check the origin and destination fields, then confirm that the weekday or weekend view matches your travel date. A correct-looking itinerary for the wrong station or service period can lead you to the wrong train.
You cannot see track information
Use DepartureVision rather than the station-to-station schedule search. Track assignments are part of the DepartureVision station display.
You want to know every stop
Open the train in DepartureVision. Selecting a train reveals the stations it serves and estimated arrival information.

Schedule viewing does not require signing in according to NJ TRANSIT’s app FAQ. Sign-in is associated with ticket purchasing, storing, and management, so use the schedule function without an account when you only need timetable information.

You need notifications in a particular format
Set up My Transit Alerts and select the available delivery method that suits you: app notification, text, or email. During setup, verify the trip’s origin, destination, approximate departure and return times, and selected trains.
You are checking a train for someone at the station
Select the station where that person will arrive or depart, then use the displayed train list. If you need to know where the train came from or where it is going, open the train entry to view its served stations and estimated arrival information.

What each source can and cannot tell you
Use the station-to-station search for planned timing and itinerary selection. It is not the station’s live board. Use DepartureVision for the current display at one station, including the track assignment and train details available after selection. It is not a substitute for choosing the correct origin and destination when you are planning an unfamiliar journey. Use My Transit Alerts for notifications tied to a trip you define; it is not a general replacement for checking the station display immediately before departure. The app is the most convenient single interface when you need planning, schedule access, real-time information, and ticket functions, but ticket management has the separate account requirement described above.
