To check a Nintendo Switch 2 controller, open HOME Menu > Controllers. The screen shows the approximate battery life for every controller actively paired with the console and displays a charging indicator when a controller is charging. This is the controller-status screen; the console’s own battery-percentage setting does not convert controller readings into exact percentages.
For Joy-Con 2 attached to the console, charging works only when the Switch 2 is connected to its AC adapter and is powered on or in Sleep Mode. A Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (model BEE-010) provides a separate charging route. The Switch 2 Pro Controller can charge from a dock USB port or directly from the Switch 2 AC adapter.
Check a paired controller’s battery level
- From the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu, select Controllers.
- Locate the icon for each controller currently paired to that Switch 2 system.
- Read the approximate battery-life indicator shown beside each controller.
- Look for the charging symbol on the controller entry. Its presence indicates that the controller is currently charging.
Nintendo describes this as an approximate battery-life display for each controller actively paired to the system. It is not documented as an exact percentage. The controller icons and charging state are therefore the right place to check whether a particular Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controller has power, rather than relying on the console-battery percentage setting. If a controller is missing from the list
The screen reports controllers that are actively paired to that Switch 2. A controller that is switched off, out of range, disconnected, or not paired will not provide a current reading. Wake or connect the controller, pair it with the console, and return to HOME Menu > Controllers to check it. If you are checking several controllers for multiplayer, inspect each icon separately; one Joy-Con can have a different remaining level from the other.

How to tell whether a controller is charging
Open HOME Menu > Controllers and inspect the relevant controller icon. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a charging indicator on this screen. If the indicator appears, the console recognizes that the controller is receiving charge; if it does not, check the physical connection and the requirements for that controller.
- Joy-Con 2 attached to the console: the Switch 2 must be connected to the AC adapter, and the console must be powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- Joy-Con 2 in the Charging Grip: the grip must be connected by its included USB cable to the Switch 2 dock or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
- Switch 2 Pro Controller: connect its included USB charging cable to a dock USB port or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
After connecting a charging cable or attaching a controller, give the system a moment, then check the Controllers screen again. The battery icon and the charging icon answer different questions: the first estimates remaining power, while the second indicates that charging is currently recognized. Do not confuse controller battery readings with the console percentage
The Switch 2 has separate controls for showing the console’s own battery level. These instructions do not turn the controller display into a percentage:

- In handheld or tabletop mode, tap the battery icon at the top-right of the screen to view the console battery percentage.
- Press ZL and ZR together briefly to show the console’s battery percentage.
- To keep the console percentage visible on the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Battery (%).
Those settings apply to the Switch 2 console battery. For paired controllers, return to Controllers and use the approximate level and charging indicator shown for each controller. Nintendo Japan also distinguishes the controller indicator from the console’s battery display at Nintendo Support Japan. A console reading of, for example, 60 percent does not mean an attached Joy-Con 2 is also at 60 percent.
Joy-Con 2 charging methods
Joy-Con 2 has two Nintendo-documented ways to charge: attached to the Switch 2 console or attached to the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. Nintendo estimates approximately 3½ hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not an independently measured result, and the support page does not state a publication year for the figure. The Charging Grip is not included in a Switch 2 bundle, so it is an additional accessory if you want to charge detached Joy-Con 2 away from the console.
Charge Joy-Con 2 while attached to the Switch 2
- Slide the Joy-Con 2 controllers onto the Switch 2 console.
- Connect the Switch 2 to its AC adapter.
- Leave the console powered on or place it in Sleep Mode.
- Open HOME Menu > Controllers and confirm that the charging indicator appears for the attached Joy-Con 2.
Simply attaching Joy-Con 2 to a console that is not connected to the AC adapter does not meet Nintendo’s stated charging conditions. If the console is running from its internal battery, connect the AC adapter before diagnosing a charging problem. A completely powered-off console also does not satisfy the stated powered-on-or-Sleep-Mode condition.
Charge Joy-Con 2 with the Charging Grip
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010).
- Connect the grip with its included USB cable to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock, or connect it directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
- Check HOME Menu > Controllers on the paired Switch 2 for the approximate level and charging indicator.
The grip is useful when the Joy-Con 2 controllers are detached from the console or when you want to charge them separately. It does not make the controller reading an exact percentage; it simply supplies the approved charging route and lets the paired console report the status. Switch 2 Pro Controller charging
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller uses its included USB charging cable. You can charge it in either of these ways:

Once connected, use HOME Menu > Controllers to see the Pro Controller’s approximate battery state and charging indicator. Nintendo’s instructions do not establish a charging-speed advantage for dock USB versus direct AC-adapter power, so choose the connection that is available and verify the icon on screen. The console itself does not have to be sitting in the dock for the Pro Controller to charge from a dock USB port. Nintendo’s Pro Controller instructions are published at Nintendo Support.
Quick checks before you start playing
The Controllers screen is most useful when several controllers are paired or when you need to identify a low controller before a multiplayer session. Use this short check:
- Open Controllers from the HOME Menu rather than the console-battery setting.
- Confirm that every controller you intend to use appears in the list.
- Read each approximate battery indicator individually; one controller may have substantially less charge than another.
- Confirm the charging icon after attaching a Joy-Con 2, placing it in the Charging Grip, or plugging in the Pro Controller.
- If no charging icon appears, follow the controller-specific troubleshooting steps below.
Checking before a game avoids mistaking a console percentage for a controller level and helps you find a single low controller in a pair. The display is tied to controllers actively paired to that system, so perform the check on the Switch 2 you plan to use.
Troubleshooting: Joy-Con 2 will not show as charging
1. Verify the console-attached charging conditions
When Joy-Con 2 is attached directly to the Switch 2, confirm all three conditions: the controllers are fully seated on the console rails, the console is connected to the AC adapter, and the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode. A missing AC connection or a completely powered-off console can explain why the charging indicator does not appear.
2. Check the Controllers screen
Open HOME Menu > Controllers after reconnecting the AC adapter. If the Joy-Con 2 entry appears with the charging symbol, the system has recognized the charging state. If the controller is absent, wake it and make sure it is paired with the console. A missing entry is a connection or pairing issue as well as a battery-status issue, because the console cannot show a current reading for a controller it does not actively recognize.
3. Try the Charging Grip
If console-attached charging still does not work, attach the Joy-Con 2 to the BEE-010 Charging Grip and connect the grip using its included USB cable. Use either a USB port on the Switch 2 dock or the Switch 2 AC adapter as the power source. This alternate route helps determine whether the issue is specific to console attachment or persists with another approved charging method.

4. Stop if the problem persists
Persistent charging failures or unusually short battery life may require Nintendo service. Use Nintendo’s support and repair path rather than opening the controller, removing its battery, or following an unverified battery-replacement procedure. - Reconnect the included USB cable at both ends and check whether the controller appears on the Controllers screen.
- If you are using a dock USB port, check another available port on the Switch 2 dock.
- Connect the cable directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter to bypass the dock as a charging source.
- Confirm that the Pro Controller is paired and visible in HOME Menu > Controllers; an unpaired controller cannot provide a current paired-controller reading.
- After changing the connection, wait briefly and inspect the charging indicator again.
- If the charging indicator never appears with either Nintendo-documented connection, consult Nintendo support instead of disassembling the controller.
These checks distinguish a cable or power-source problem from a controller or pairing problem. Nintendo documents both charging routes, but does not promise that one will charge faster than the other.
Older Nintendo Switch controllers are a separate case
Nintendo lists earlier Nintendo Switch controllers as usable wirelessly with Switch 2, but they should not be treated as physically interchangeable with the new hardware. First-generation Nintendo Switch Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. They need a compatible charging accessory, such as a Joy-Con Charging Grip or charging stand, or a compatible original Nintendo Switch console for charging.
The same distinction applies when interpreting controller names: Joy-Con 2 is not the first-generation Joy-Con, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller is not the earlier Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Pair the controller you actually intend to use, then check its individual entry under HOME Menu > Controllers. Nintendo’s compatibility information is at Nintendo Support.
What the battery display can—and cannot—tell you
It can show an approximate remaining level
The Controllers screen gives a practical indication of whether a paired controller has plenty of charge, is running low, or should be connected to power. Because Nintendo labels the reading approximate, treat it as a status estimate for planning play time, not as a laboratory-precise measurement. Avoid assigning a precise number to an icon or claiming that two icons represent identical percentages.

It can show the current charging state
The charging icon answers a different question from the level indicator: whether the system currently recognizes the controller as charging. A controller can show a remaining level while not charging, or show a charging state while its level is still low. Recheck after changing the cable, attachment, or power state.
It does not provide a documented exact percentage for controllers
The System Battery (%) option belongs to the console battery. Do not use it as evidence that a Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controller is at a particular percentage. For controller status, use the dedicated Controllers screen.

Which charging method should you use?

Nintendo documents both routes for the Pro Controller and does not establish a performance advantage for one over the other. Choose the connection that is available and confirm the resulting status on the Controllers screen. For Joy-Con 2, the practical choice is whether you want the controllers attached to the console or charging separately in the BEE-010 grip; the approved power requirements differ between those positions.
Accessory, model, and bundle details
The official separate accessory is the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010. It is the relevant purchase when detached Joy-Con 2 need a charging location, and it includes the USB cable used to connect the grip to the dock or AC adapter. It is sold separately rather than included in a Switch 2 bundle. No specific retail price is established by Nintendo’s support instructions, so compare current retailer pricing separately if you are deciding whether to buy one.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller includes its USB charging cable. You do not need to buy a dock-specific charger for it: Nintendo documents either an available USB port on the Switch 2 dock or a direct connection to the Switch 2 AC adapter. Earlier-generation Joy-Con accessories are a separate compatibility question and should not be assumed to fit Joy-Con 2.
When to contact Nintendo
Contact Nintendo support or use its repair process when a controller remains paired but never shows a charging indicator with the correct connection, repeatedly loses charge unusually quickly, or fails to charge through both documented methods available for that controller. Keep the controller intact while troubleshooting; battery disassembly can create safety risks and may complicate service.

Why is my Joy-Con 2 not charging while attached?
Check that the Switch 2 is connected to its AC adapter and is powered on or in Sleep Mode. Then inspect the Controllers screen. If needed, try the BEE-010 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip with its included USB cable.
Can I charge Joy-Con 2 without attaching it to the Switch 2?
