You can check earthquake activity near you with ShakeNet or Raspberry Shake’s public web maps without owning a seismograph. To record ground motion at your own location, you need access to a Raspberry Shake instrument; when its owner enables data forwarding, it can send a continuous seismic stream to Raspberry Shake’s data center for automated processing.

These tools support monitoring and exploration, not a guaranteed early-warning service. A map event, a nearby station’s trace, and a recording from a sensor in your home are different things.

Choose what you mean by “detect near you”

Option What you can see What you need Useful for
ShakeNet or public web tools Reported earthquake events, network stations, and public station data for exploring activity around an area A phone or browser with internet access Checking activity without installing a sensor
A Raspberry Shake at your location A live waveform recorded by that instrument; forwarding can also contribute its data to network processing A physical station, power, Ethernet, suitable placement, and configuration Keeping a local recording for education, research, or personal monitoring

The public tools show network data; they do not turn a phone into a seismograph. To see a trace measured inside your home, you need a sensor located there or access to one nearby.

Check events and station data in ShakeNet

The free ShakeNet mobile app lets you browse global earthquake events, local ground-motion activity, and stations that are online. You can follow a station to view its live waveform; the app listing also describes 24-hour helicorder and spectrogram views. See the ShakeNet Earthquake Monitoring listing on Google Play for the app’s current features.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A waveform is a record of motion, not proof by itself that an earthquake occurred. Local activity such as school-day movement or other cultural noise can appear in station data. Confirm a suspected event against earthquake solutions and other station information rather than interpreting every spike as seismic activity.

How a forwarded station contributes

Raspberry Shake’s network manual says stations configured to forward data send a continuous real-time seismic stream to the Raspberry Shake Data Center. Automated systems, including SeisComPro as an example, search streams for earthquakes and use a network-wide approach to locate events. The network also integrates publicly available stations from the Global Seismic Network. Detected events can be viewed in EarthquakeView, while StationView helps locate stations.

This describes a monitoring and processing system; the cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed detection radius, quantified accuracy, or alert lead time. Do not treat a station or app as a substitute for official emergency alerts.

Set up a Raspberry Shake for a local recording

  1. Connect the instrument: Use Ethernet to connect it to your router, then power it with the recommended supply. Raspberry Shake’s Quick Start Guide describes configuring the device from a browser on another device connected to the same network.
  2. Choose a stable location: Place it on a bare floor rather than carpet, a desk, or a windowsill. The guide recommends the lowest floor, ideally on a concrete slab near a foundation wall.
  3. Reduce noise: Keep the instrument away from furnaces, washing machines, air conditioners, drafts, and, where possible, Wi-Fi or other RF sources that may add noise to measurements.
  4. Orient the unit if required: RS3D and RS4D models need north alignment using a compass. Follow the guide for the specific model; sensor types and measured channels vary.
  5. Configure the station: From a browser on the same network, complete setup and enter the station location carefully. The guide says accurate coordinates matter for earthquake locations.
  6. Enable forwarding if you want to share data: Data forwarding is a configuration choice. Enabling it sends the station’s stream to the Raspberry Shake Data Center and makes the station part of the shared network experience.
  7. Secure and maintain the device: Change the default password after initial setup. Raspberry Shake recommends hand-tightening screws to avoid stripping plastic enclosure threads and suggests a small UPS for short-to-medium outages and microSD-card protection; these measures do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

For privacy, the guide says a station’s public map location is offset by a couple hundred meters in a random direction. Do not expect its displayed marker to identify the exact home location.

What the system does—and does not—promise

  • It can help you inspect seismic data: ShakeNet, StationView, and DataView expose event, station, and waveform information.
  • A local instrument can record local motion: Its trace may include non-earthquake vibration and should be interpreted alongside event and station data.
  • Forwarding supports shared processing: The network searches data streams and locates events using data across stations, but the cited materials provide no quantified performance guarantees.
  • It is not established as a life-safety early-warning service: The official materials reviewed describe detection and analysis, not guaranteed alerts, lead times, or replacement of official emergency notifications. Raspberry Shake’s curriculum also discusses background noise and custom Node-RED alerts, which are not a guarantee of warning performance.
