Check the current AQI for your location on AirNow.gov or the official AirNow app before you go outside. Use the pollutant-specific activity guidance and forecast to choose a safer time, shorter duration or lower intensity, then check again because conditions can change during the day.
The U.S. AQI is a decision aid, not a universal medical “safe” line. The right response depends on the AQI band, whether ozone or particle pollution is driving it, how hard and how long you plan to exercise, and whether anyone in your group is especially sensitive.
What the AQI tells you
The U.S. Air Quality Index converts outdoor pollution measurements into a 0–500 scale with six color-coded categories. A higher number means greater concern for health. The value shown for a city or reporting area is intended to describe outdoor conditions; it does not measure the air inside your home, office or gym.
AirNow publishes the current AQI (often called the NowCast for rapidly changing conditions) and a forecast. Those answer different questions: the current value helps you decide whether now is a good time to be outside, while the forecast helps you plan an activity later and identify cleaner periods. A forecast is not a promise; smoke, wind, sunlight and traffic can move pollution quickly.

The number is usually the highest AQI among the pollutants being tracked for that area, with the “main pollutant” identified when available. That means a moderate particle value and a high ozone value should not be averaged together mentally. Read the category, pollutant name and update time as a set. A reporting-area value can also smooth over differences between neighborhoods, hills, valleys and roads, so local conditions may not match the number perfectly.
| AQI value | Category | What it generally means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good | Air quality is satisfactory, and health risk from outdoor air pollution is low. |
| 51–100 | Moderate | Air quality is acceptable. People who are unusually sensitive may notice effects. |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups | Some members of sensitive groups may experience health effects; the general public is less likely to be affected. |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy | Some people may experience health effects, and sensitive groups may experience more serious effects. |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy | Health alert conditions; the risk of effects is increased for everyone. |
| 301–500 | Hazardous | Emergency conditions; everyone is more likely to be affected. |
These thresholds are the current U.S. agency scale. They are not interchangeable with another country’s index, and they do not mean that every person has the same response at the same number.
How to check air quality where you are
1. Open the official local reading
- Go to AirNow.gov.
- Search for your city or ZIP code and select the matching reporting area.
- Read the AQI number, color category and named “main pollutant,” if one is displayed.
- Note the time of the observation or update. An older value may not represent conditions at the moment you leave.
The free AirNow app provides the same type of official AQI information on a phone and can store multiple locations. Add home, work, school or a destination so you can check each place rather than assuming one citywide value applies everywhere. If you travel between two areas, compare both reporting areas instead of using the reading for your starting point alone.
2. Check the forecast for the time you will be outside
Use the forecast after checking the current value. Forecast discussions can identify when pollution is expected to peak and whether a cleaner period is likely later in the day. For example, if ozone is expected to rise in the afternoon, a morning walk may involve less ozone exposure than the same route at 3 p.m. Conversely, overnight or morning smoke can make an early activity worse on a day affected by a fire.
Write down the planned start and end times, not just the date. A forecast for “Good” tomorrow does not answer whether a 6 a.m. practice or a 4 p.m. run will have the cleaner air. Look for the expected peak, the direction of the trend and any agency discussion of weather that could change the estimate.
3. Recheck immediately before leaving
Make the final check shortly before an outdoor practice, commute, run or job shift. Weather fronts, wind changes, traffic and wildfire smoke can alter the reading during a single day. If an activity lasts several hours, check again during a break and be prepared to shorten, move or stop it.
4. Verify the source and measurement type
When a reading looks surprising, check whether it is an official U.S. AQI, a private index or a single sensor value. Confirm the pollutant and whether the number is a current NowCast or a forecast. Also check how close the monitor or sensor is to your route. These details explain many apparent disagreements without requiring you to guess which color is right.

Match the AQI to the activity you plan
For particle pollution, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Guide for Particle Pollution (February 2023) gives activity-specific recommendations. “Intense” activity means breathing harder for a sustained period, such as running, competitive sport, fast cycling, heavy outdoor work or shoveling. A leisurely walk is less demanding, but duration still matters.

| AQI band | Particle-pollution activity guidance |
|---|---|
| Good (0–50) | It is a good day to be active outside. |
| Moderate (51–100) | Unusually sensitive people may make activity shorter and less intense. Everyone else can generally be active outdoors. |
| Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (101–150) | Sensitive groups should shorten activity, reduce intensity, take more breaks and watch for symptoms. |
| Unhealthy (151–200) | Sensitive groups should avoid long or intense activity and consider moving or rescheduling it. Everyone else should reduce long or intense activity and take breaks. |
| Very Unhealthy (201–300) | Sensitive groups should avoid all outdoor physical activity. Everyone else should avoid long or intense activity and consider moving it indoors or rescheduling. |
| Hazardous (301–500) | Everyone should avoid all outdoor physical activity. Sensitive groups should stay indoors and keep activity low. |
This chart addresses particle pollution. Ozone has a separate official guide, so do not apply the particle chart as if it were a complete rule for every pollutant. If AirNow identifies ozone as the main pollutant, follow the ozone-specific instructions in the AirNow publication index.
Duration and intensity change your exposure
A short, easy errand and a two-hour soccer practice are not equivalent at the same AQI. Hard exercise increases the amount of air you breathe, and a longer session extends the time you spend in that air. When the AQI rises, first reduce intensity, then shorten the session, add breaks or move it indoors. At higher categories, rescheduling is more protective than trying to “push through” with a brief warm-up outside.
Consider the whole session, including warm-up, drills, travel between fields and cleanup. A plan that looks brief on paper can become prolonged when delays or extra games are added. Build in a decision point: if the AQI moves into a higher band or the main pollutant changes, switch to the lower-intensity or indoor option rather than waiting until the end.

Symptoms are a stop signal
Leave the polluted area and stop exertion if you develop coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, unusual shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness or other concerning symptoms. Seek urgent medical care for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, confusion or symptoms that do not improve. An AQI reading cannot diagnose the cause of a symptom or replace advice from your clinician.
Who should use extra caution
EPA particle-pollution guidance identifies several groups that can be affected at lower exposure levels or develop more serious effects:
- People with heart disease or lung disease, including asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Older adults.
- Children and teenagers, whose lungs are still developing and who often spend more time being active outdoors.
- People in minority populations, who EPA identifies as a sensitive population in its guidance.
- Outdoor workers and others whose jobs require long or strenuous periods outside.
Membership in a sensitive group does not create one universal cutoff. A person with well-controlled asthma, for example, may receive different instructions from a clinician than someone with unstable symptoms. Use your personal action plan, prescribed medicines and medical advice together with the AQI.
For a group activity, plan for the most vulnerable participant rather than the average participant. A coach, camp leader or employer can schedule a lower-pollution period, provide indoor alternatives and allow people to stop without penalty when symptoms appear. Tell participants in advance which AQI source will be used and who will make a change-of-plan decision.

| What to compare | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Pollutant | Ozone and particle pollution behave differently and have different guidance. | Is the number for ozone, fine particles or another pollutant? |
| Time horizon | A current NowCast describes conditions now; a forecast describes expected conditions later. | Am I comparing a live estimate with a forecast? |
| Location and proximity | A reporting area, regulatory monitor and neighborhood sensor may represent different air masses. | How close is the measurement to my route or destination? |
| Source and method | Official agencies and private services may use different calculations, averaging windows and quality controls. | Is this the official U.S. AQI or a private index? |
Use the official U.S. AQI as your reference when a commercial weather app disagrees, and read advisories from your state or local air agency. A private sensor can add neighborhood detail, but a very short-term reading—especially from a low-cost device—has more uncertainty when you try to translate it into a health decision.
For example, an inexpensive sensor beside a busy road may react to a brief local plume while the area-wide NowCast remains stable. That spike is useful context, but verify the trend and the official advisory before treating it as a sustained exposure. Conversely, a monitor several miles away may miss smoke pooling in a nearby valley. Location helps explain the difference; it does not make either number a universal substitute for the other.
What to do during wildfire smoke
Smoke can travel far from the fire and can change direction or concentration rapidly. Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map in addition to the ordinary local AQI. The map combines regulatory air-quality monitors with other products, including low-cost sensors, to show smoke and particle conditions at a finer geographic scale.
- Check the map for your current location and the place you plan to visit.
- Look at the particle reading and the smoke plume, not only the color shown by a weather app.
- Compare the current condition with the day’s forecast and any local air-agency smoke advisory.
- If smoke is moving toward your area or the AQI is worsening, postpone strenuous outdoor activity rather than waiting for a later update.
- Recheck after wind shifts, a fire-growth report or a change in the visible smoke.
Smoke-map layers may not update at exactly the same time, and a sensor near your home may not represent the air along a route several miles away. Treat a sudden isolated spike as a reason to verify the source and trend, not as permission to ignore a broader smoke advisory. If visibility worsens or the smell of smoke becomes strong, use those observations as additional reasons to recheck, not as a replacement for the AQI.
Practical decisions for common plans
Walking or easy errands
At Good AQI, proceed normally. At Moderate, most people can continue, while unusually sensitive people may shorten the walk or choose a less polluted time. At higher categories, use the particle guidance, keep the trip brief and avoid turning an errand into prolonged exercise. If the route is flexible, choose a shorter path and avoid adding optional stops when the category is rising.
Running, cycling and outdoor sports
These activities can become intense quickly. Check both the current value and the forecast for the entire practice window. If the AQI is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, sensitive athletes should reduce intensity and duration and take breaks. At Unhealthy or Very Unhealthy levels, move long or intense sessions indoors or reschedule; at Hazardous, everyone should avoid outdoor physical activity. A team should have an indoor or postponed version ready before participants arrive.
Outdoor work
Workers may have fewer choices than recreational exercisers. Supervisors should use the AQI and forecast to schedule strenuous tasks during cleaner periods, rotate demanding work with breaks and provide an indoor or lower-exposure option when the category calls for it. A worker who develops symptoms should stop and report them rather than treating the AQI as a quota to endure. Record the source and time used for the decision so a later shift can reassess current conditions.
Children’s activities
Children and teenagers are listed as sensitive to particle pollution. Check the AQI before recess, camps, field trips and games, and have a plan for shorter, lower-intensity or indoor activities. Do not rely on a single morning check for an all-day event; conditions can change. Share the plan with families and staff, including the trigger for moving indoors and the person responsible for checking again.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a forecast as the current condition: A predicted “Good” afternoon does not tell you what the air is like this morning.
- Treating 100 as a universal safety boundary: Sensitivity, pollutant, duration and intensity all affect risk.
- Comparing different pollutants: An ozone number and a particle number are not interchangeable.
- Assuming one monitor represents every neighborhood: Topography, wind and smoke can create local differences.
- Ignoring the trend: A rapidly rising AQI deserves more caution than the same value after conditions have been steadily improving.
- Assuming an indoor location is automatically clean: The outdoor AQI does not measure indoor air, and indoor conditions depend on ventilation and filtration.
- Waiting for symptoms before changing plans: The guidance is designed to reduce exposure before you feel ill.
- Checking only one place: A destination, school field or worksite may be in a different reporting area or smoke pocket than home.
- Letting a single low-cost sensor overrule an advisory: Use it for added local context, then verify the official AQI, trend and agency notices.
A repeatable air-quality check
Use this sequence whenever you are deciding about outdoor activity:
- Identify the exact location and the planned start and end times.
- Read the current AQI and main pollutant on AirNow.gov or in the AirNow app.
- Check the forecast for the activity window and note any expected peak or cleaner period.
- Choose the pollutant-specific guidance, accounting for duration, intensity and sensitive participants.
- For smoke, verify the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local agency advisories.
- Recheck before departure and during long activities; stop if symptoms develop.
For a recurring schedule, make the check part of the routine: review the forecast when planning, check the current value on the way out and assign someone to monitor changes during a long event. Keep an indoor, shorter or postponed alternative ready so a worsening AQI does not become a last-minute argument.

Frequently Asked Questions
What AQI is too high to exercise outside?
There is no single number that is safe or unsafe for every person and every activity. For particle pollution, Good (0–50) is a good time to be active. At Moderate (51–100), unusually sensitive people may shorten or reduce intensity. Sensitive groups should reduce activity at 101–150, avoid long or intense activity at 151–200, avoid outdoor physical activity at 201–300, and stay indoors with low activity at 301–500. Everyone should avoid outdoor physical activity in the Hazardous band.
Is an AQI of 100 safe?
An AQI of 100 is the upper end of Moderate, not a universal safety boundary. Most people can generally be active outdoors, while unusually sensitive people may need shorter, less intense activity. Check which pollutant is driving the value, how long you will be outside and whether anyone has a heart or lung condition.
Is morning or afternoon better for outdoor exercise?
It depends on the pollutant and the day’s forecast. Ozone may rise in the afternoon, making an earlier period cleaner. Wildfire smoke can be worse overnight or in the morning, or can shift with wind. Use the current AQI and forecast discussion for the specific location rather than assuming one time of day is always best.

How often should I check the AQI?
Check when planning, again shortly before leaving and again during a long activity or when conditions change. Wind shifts, traffic, weather fronts and wildfire smoke can change air quality within a day. A single morning check is not enough for an all-day event.
Can a low-cost air sensor replace the official AQI?
No. A sensor can add neighborhood detail, but short-term readings have greater uncertainty for health interpretation and may represent only one spot. Use the official U.S. AQI and local agency advisories as the reference, and use sensor trends to prompt verification rather than to dismiss a broader advisory.
Does the outdoor AQI tell me whether indoor air is safe?
No. The AQI describes outdoor conditions and does not measure the air inside a home, office or gym. Indoor conditions depend on the building, ventilation and filtration. Moving an activity indoors may reduce exposure, but it is not automatically a guarantee of clean air.

Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map along with the ordinary local AQI. Look at particle readings, smoke movement, the forecast and local agency advisories for both your current location and destination. If smoke is moving in or the AQI is worsening, postpone strenuous activity and recheck after wind or fire conditions change.
Who is considered more sensitive to particle pollution?
EPA guidance identifies people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, minority populations and outdoor workers as sensitive groups. Individual responses differ, so use a clinician’s action plan and consider the most vulnerable participant when planning a group activity.
What if I live outside the United States?
Use your national or local environmental agency’s air-quality index and health guidance. Category names, numerical ranges and averaging periods can differ from the U.S. AQI, so do not transfer AirNow thresholds directly.
The Bottom Line
Check the current AQI and main pollutant for your exact location on AirNow.gov or the AirNow app, then check the forecast for the hours you will be outside. Match the pollutant-specific guidance to your activity’s intensity and duration, use extra caution for sensitive people, and consult the Fire and Smoke Map during wildfire conditions. Recheck before leaving and during long activities because air quality can change quickly.
