The reliable way to choose an accelerator is to start with the exact model implementation and inference runtime, not with a vendor label or a card’s headline memory. Confirm that the model’s operations and format are supported, match the accelerator architecture and software versions, verify the operating system and Python requirements, then calculate memory for the model, context, runtime overhead, and concurrent requests. A card listed as compatible can still be too small, too slow, or missing a feature your workload needs.

Use the current runtime documentation as a gate before you buy. For example, the stable vLLM GPU installation documentation separates NVIDIA CUDA, AMD ROCm, Intel XPU, and Apple Silicon paths. Its support list is evidence of a documented software path—not a promise of fit, throughput, latency, or stability for every model.

What “compatible” must mean for an LLM accelerator

Compatibility is a stack of dependencies. The model implementation, weight format, inference server, accelerator architecture, driver, toolkit or runtime, operating system, language runtime, and requested features all have to line up. A model may load on one device but fail when you enable a quantization format, multimodal input, a particular attention kernel, tensor parallelism, or a long context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate four questions before comparing products:

  • Can the software start? The runtime must support the operating system, Python version, driver, accelerator backend, and device architecture.
  • Can the model load? Its implementation, operators, weight format, and precision or quantization must be supported.
  • Can the workload fit? Memory must cover weights, the key/value cache for the context window, runtime allocations, and simultaneous requests.
  • Will it meet your service target? Throughput, latency, power, and value require a benchmark for your exact model and request pattern; a compatibility list does not establish them.

Do not treat “AI compatible,” “CUDA capable,” or a vendor family name as a complete answer. The exact device model and its architecture matter.

Step 1: Freeze the workload you are actually buying for

Write a one-page workload specification before looking at cards. Record the model name and revision, the implementation or repository, the weight format, precision or quantization, maximum context, expected prompt and output lengths, and the number of concurrent requests. Note whether you need streaming, batching, tool calling, multimodal inputs, adapters, speculative decoding, or multi-GPU execution.

Also record the deployment shape: a local process, a container, a hosted server, or an orchestration platform. “The model” is not always a single artifact. The same model family can have different implementations and quantized files with different operator and runtime requirements.

Why the exact format matters

Backends do not support every format identically. A runtime may support a model in one precision while lacking a kernel or conversion path for another. A model card that says “GPU supported” may refer to a specific framework, release, or file format. Copy the implementation and format names exactly into your compatibility notes and check them in the runtime’s current documentation.

Step 2: Select the inference runtime first

Choose the serving runtime you intend to operate, then use its release-specific hardware and feature matrix. Runtime documentation is more useful than a generic accelerator list because it identifies the backend, minimum versions, operating-system constraints, and known feature boundaries.

For a concrete example, the current stable vLLM GPU page documents four routes:

Intel XPU Intel Data Center GPU and Intel Arc GPU Confirm that the specific accelerator and the desired vLLM features appear in the current Intel support information.
Apple Silicon Apple Silicon GPU through the community-maintained vLLM-Metal plugin The plugin uses MLX and requires MLX-optimized models; treat it as a separate community path rather than the CUDA or ROCm route.

These entries describe documented routes, not universal performance or capacity. The page is release-sensitive, so open it for the exact vLLM version, device, and feature set you plan to deploy.

Step 3: Check operating system, Python, drivers, and runtime versions

Software mismatches are a common reason a seemingly suitable accelerator fails before the model is tested. The stable vLLM GPU documentation specifies Linux and Python 3.10 through 3.13. It says, “vLLM does not support Windows natively,” while pointing to Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) with a compatible Linux distribution or community forks as alternatives. If you plan to use Windows, verify the complete WSL path—including GPU access and the distribution version—before buying hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the target operating system. Include distribution and version for Linux, or the exact WSL distribution if applicable.
  2. Pin the Python version. For the cited vLLM stable page, that means Python 3.10–3.13. Other runtimes can have different ranges.
  3. Identify the GPU driver and toolkit. Record the installed driver, CUDA or ROCm release, and any required compiler or kernel components.
  4. Pin the inference runtime release. A container tag or package version is preferable to an unpinned “latest” install for a purchase decision.
  5. Read the installation page for the exact backend. Follow the NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or Apple route rather than combining commands from different paths.

Keep this version matrix with your purchasing notes. A newer driver may not support an older runtime combination, and a device newly added to a project may require a newer runtime than the one your application currently uses.

Step 4: Match the exact accelerator architecture

Check the full model number, not only “NVIDIA,” “AMD,” “Intel,” or “Apple.” For the NVIDIA vLLM route, the documented floor is compute capability 7.5 or higher. The examples—T4, RTX 20-series, A100, L4, H100, and B200—illustrate supported families; they do not prove that every model, quantization, context length, or feature fits each card.

For AMD, verify both the exact family and the ROCm minimum. The cited page lists ROCm 6.3 or above as the general requirement, with higher minima for MI350 and Ryzen AI MAX/AI 300. A Radeon model outside the documented families, or a system that cannot run the required ROCm release, should be treated as unverified.

For Intel, confirm that your specific Data Center GPU or Arc GPU appears in the current support information, then check feature coverage for the model. For Apple Silicon, confirm that the vLLM-Metal plugin and an MLX-optimized model meet your needs; do not assume that a model packaged for another backend will work unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Calculate usable memory for the real request pattern

There is no responsible universal “how much VRAM does an LLM need?” answer without the workload specification. Start with the memory occupied by the model weights at the selected precision or quantization. Add the key/value cache required by the context window and the number of active sequences, plus runtime allocations, temporary workspaces, CUDA or ROCm overhead, and any memory consumed by preprocessing or multimodal inputs.

Concurrency changes the result. A configuration that loads one short request may run out of memory when several users keep long conversations open. Batch size, maximum sequence length, prompt length, generated-token budget, and whether the runtime preallocates cache all affect the usable headroom.

A practical memory worksheet

  • Weights: record the model’s actual file format and precision or quantization, not the family’s marketing parameter count alone.
  • Context and KV cache: record the maximum context and the number of simultaneous sequences; use the runtime’s documented cache behavior where available.
  • Runtime overhead: reserve room for kernels, graph capture, allocators, temporary tensors, and framework bookkeeping.
  • Application overhead: include tokenization, vision or audio encoders, retrieval components, adapters, and monitoring if they share the accelerator.
  • Safety margin: leave headroom for version changes, longer real prompts, and transient allocations instead of targeting a full device.

Only after these inputs are fixed should you compare a candidate’s usable memory. Product capacity alone is not a workload result, and the compatibility documentation cited here does not provide a universal capacity estimate.

Step 6: Verify the model’s features, not just its loader

Create a feature checklist for the exact service. Confirm support for the quantization format, attention implementation, batching, streaming, multimodal path, adapters, custom operators, and multi-GPU behavior you require. A model can pass a basic import test yet fail when a production feature is enabled.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Ask the runtime documentation and the model implementation documentation the same questions:

  • Is the architecture implemented by this runtime release?
  • Are all required operators available on the selected backend?
  • Does the chosen precision or quantization have a supported kernel?
  • Are long contexts and the required KV-cache policy supported?
  • Does batching or tensor and pipeline parallelism work on this device set?
  • Are multimodal encoders, adapters, or custom code supported in the deployment mode?

If either document is silent, mark the combination as unverified and test it. Silence is not proof of incompatibility, but it is not proof of support either.

Step 7: Compare candidates on evidence you can verify

Use a comparison sheet that separates compatibility from commercial and performance claims. The following axes are the ones you can establish before purchase:

Comparison axis What to record Decision rule
Model and runtime Exact implementation, format, runtime, and release Reject candidates that require an unverified conversion or backend.
Architecture Exact accelerator model and architecture; compute capability or backend family where applicable Match the runtime’s documented hardware criteria.
Software stack OS, Python, driver, CUDA or ROCm, toolkit, container or package version Require a supported, reproducible combination.
Feature coverage Quantization, attention, multimodal, batching, parallelism, and adapters Confirm every production feature, not just model loading.
Usable memory Weights plus cache, overhead, concurrency, and safety margin Choose only after the workload calculation fits.

Price, throughput, latency, power, and value are separate decisions. The cited compatibility source does not establish comparative benchmarks, so do not infer a “best” card from the support examples.

Step 8: Run a pre-purchase validation test

The strongest check is a short test of the exact model, runtime release, operating system, driver, and accelerator—or a purchase with a return option that allows this test. Use the same quantization, context limit, concurrency, and feature flags you will use in production.

  1. Install the pinned operating-system, driver, toolkit, Python, and runtime versions.
  2. Run the runtime’s device discovery command and confirm that the expected accelerator and backend are visible.
  3. Load the exact model artifact without changing precision, quantization, or custom-code settings.
  4. Send a short request, then a maximum-context request, and record whether allocation succeeds.
  5. Increase concurrency to the intended level and watch memory usage, errors, and request completion.
  6. Exercise every required feature, including streaming, batching, multimodal inputs, adapters, and multi-GPU behavior.
  7. Record startup failures, out-of-memory events, unsupported-operator messages, and driver warnings. Keep the logs with the hardware decision.

A successful smoke test proves that this tested combination works under those settings. It does not establish speed or capacity for a different model, context, or concurrency.

Common failure modes and what to check

The runtime cannot see the accelerator

Check the operating system, driver installation, device permissions, container pass-through, and backend-specific toolkit. Confirm that the runtime release supports the device architecture. On Windows, revisit the native-support limitation and verify the complete WSL configuration.

The model loads, then runs out of memory

Reduce the maximum context or concurrency only as a diagnostic, then recalculate the production requirement. Check whether the runtime reserved cache, whether a multimodal component shares memory, and whether another process occupies the device. If the required workload still does not fit with headroom, the candidate is too small regardless of its support-list status.

A quantized model fails while the full-precision model works

Verify that the exact quantization format and kernel are supported on the selected backend and runtime release. A different file format or conversion path may be required; do not assume that all quantized files are interchangeable.

A basic request works but a production feature fails

Isolate the feature—such as batching, long context, multimodal input, adapters, or multi-GPU execution—and check its backend-specific documentation. Treat an unsupported operator or kernel as a compatibility blocker until a documented update or tested workaround exists.

The installation works after an upgrade, then breaks later

Pin the runtime, driver, toolkit, Python, and container or package versions. Record the exact device and model artifacts. Recheck the live compatibility page whenever you change a major component because support facts are release-sensitive.

What the vLLM compatibility list can—and cannot—tell you

The stable vLLM page is useful for identifying documented backend routes: NVIDIA CUDA, AMD ROCm, Intel XPU, and Apple Silicon through vLLM-Metal. It supplies concrete constraints such as Linux, Python 3.10–3.13, NVIDIA compute capability 7.5 or higher, and AMD ROCm minima. Those are valuable purchase gates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not provide a universal model-memory estimate, a ranking of accelerator value, or a workload-specific benchmark. It also cannot settle every combination of model implementation, quantization, context, feature, and concurrency. Use the page as the beginning of verification, then test the exact workload and retain the versioned evidence.
