To check a share price, open the official BSE or NSE market-data page, search for the company name or trading symbol, then check the quote’s timestamp and data-status label. NSE’s equity market page displays fields including last traded price (LTP), previous close, change, volume and the session’s open, high and low. A number is not necessarily current just because it appears on an exchange page: confirm whether the display is streaming, a snapshot or delayed, and read its timestamp.
For a quick lookup, an exchange’s public quote display is a sensible starting point. For an app, data analysis workflow or commercial service, a public page is not the same thing as a licensed data feed. The right source depends on how fresh the data must be, how much order-book detail is needed, what market coverage is included and what use the terms permit.
How to check a share price on an exchange page
- Open an official exchange market-data page. For NSE, use its equity market page. For BSE, use an official BSE market-data display and check the information shown on that page. NSE’s live equity market page provides a quote table and identifies the display as streaming when indicated. The available official descriptions do not establish the functionality or exact delay of every public BSE quote display, so check the particular page rather than assuming its refresh rate.
- Search for the company. Enter its company name or trading symbol in the page’s search, then select the intended listing if the results distinguish between instruments or listings. Check the displayed name and symbol before relying on the quote. A close match in a search result is not enough: make sure the quote belongs to the security you meant to look up.
- Read the timestamp and status first. NSE’s page can show an “As on” time in IST and identify the display as streaming. Confirm these indicators are populated and current for the quote you are viewing. If a timestamp is missing, old, or the page identifies the data as delayed, do not treat the displayed price as a live market price. If the page does not clearly establish how fresh the data is, regard that as an unresolved point and verify the specific page or product information.
- Interpret the price with its comparison fields. Read LTP together with previous close, change, percentage change and the other available quote fields. These give context that a price on its own does not. Note whether the display is intraday, a snapshot, delayed, or end-of-day/historical before drawing conclusions from the figures.
Quotes and activity fields are session-dependent and can change. A page refresh or a visible number alone does not tell you the precise freshness of a quote; use the exchange’s own timestamp and data-status wording. For a simple lookup, you can stop after confirming the correct security, the freshness label and the quote fields relevant to your question. If you need a programmatic or business use, first identify a product whose specification and license match that use.
What the quote fields mean
| Field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Last traded price (LTP) | The price shown for the last trade represented in the quote display. | Read it alongside the timestamp, previous close and change. On a delayed or stale display, the LTP may not represent the current market. |
| Previous close | The comparison price shown for the prior close. | Use it as context for the displayed change, while checking the page’s timestamp and comparison basis. |
| Open, high and low | The displayed opening price and session price range. | They help place LTP within the session’s reported movement; they are not a forecast of where the price will go. |
| Change and percentage change | The displayed movement and percentage movement relative to the page’s comparison basis. | NSE notes that percentage change may use adjusted prices around corporate actions, including dividends, bonuses, consolidations, rights issues and face-value splits. Do not assume the percentage is always a simple calculation from unadjusted prices. |
| Volume and value | Trading-activity fields reported in the quote table. | Read them as activity measures for the displayed data and period. They do not, by themselves, explain why a price moved. |
| 52-week high and low | Longer-period reference points displayed alongside the quote. | Use them to see how the quote compares with the displayed 52-week range, not as a guarantee of support, resistance or future performance. |
Field labels and values should be read as the exchange page presents them. A quote page is a data display, not a complete explanation of an instrument or of the factors behind a price change. LTP answers what price the displayed last trade had; it does not alone tell you whether the quote is current, how active trading has been, or how the figure compares with the previous close. That is why the timestamp and surrounding fields matter together.

Change and percentage change also need context. NSE notes that percentage change may be calculated using adjusted prices around corporate actions such as dividends, bonuses, consolidations, rights issues and face-value splits. If a displayed percentage does not look like a straightforward comparison with the prior close, do not automatically assume the page is wrong; check the exchange’s stated comparison basis and any adjustment convention. The official quote fields should be interpreted as presented rather than reconstructed from a single number.
How to tell whether market data is live, delayed or a snapshot
“Live” can describe different delivery arrangements. The useful distinction is not just whether a page updates, but how fresh its data is, what information it contains and whether it is intended for a person viewing a page or for an application consuming a feed.
- Streaming display: NSE’s equity market page identifies its display as streaming and may show an “As on” timestamp in IST. Check both signals on the page rather than assuming the label applies to every quote or remains current indefinitely. The timestamp gives a time reference, while the status wording tells you how the exchange describes the display. Neither should be skipped.
- Snapshot: A snapshot product supplies data as a captured view rather than as a continuously updating stream. NSE describes snapshot products as part of its data offerings, including a 15-minute-delayed snapshot. That makes snapshot timing a product characteristic to verify, not something to infer from a page that happens to show a quote.
- Delayed data: NSE and BSE both describe delayed-data options in their data products. A delayed quote can be useful for checking market information, but it should not be mistaken for the current executable price. Check the specific delay stated for the product; the official descriptions do not establish one universal delay for all exchange displays or products.
- End-of-day or historical data: These products are intended for completed-session or past data, rather than a current intraday quote. BSE’s tariff describes end-of-day and historical market data; NSE’s data-vending page lists end-of-day/historical data. These categories may suit retrospective analysis, but they should not be presented as a live price.
For an everyday quote check, the crucial test is whether the page tells you the data status and when it was current. A streaming label without a current timestamp leaves uncertainty; a timestamp with a delayed label does not make the figure real-time. If you cannot find either signal, do not fill in the missing information by assuming the page updates continuously. Consult the exchange’s specific page or product terms.

Choosing an exchange data source or feed
If you only need to look up a quote, begin with the relevant exchange’s public market-data display and verify its timestamp and status. If you are selecting data for software, research or a business, compare the product itself rather than treating all “real-time” data as equivalent. A useful comparison covers freshness, depth, coverage, delivery format, intended use and current price.
| Decision point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Freshness | Whether the product is streaming, a snapshot, delayed or end-of-day/historical, and how its timing is described by the exchange. |
| Depth | Whether you need only the best bid and ask or more levels of the order book. NSE describes Level 1 as the best bid and ask, Level 2 as up to five best bid and ask prices, Level 3 as up to twenty, and tick-by-tick as the full order book. |
| Coverage | Which market information and categories the specific product includes, such as equity, derivatives, indices or corporate data. Confirm the product’s actual coverage rather than inferring it from a general data-page description. |
| Delivery format | How the exchange makes the product available and whether the delivery method fits your application or workflow. Confirm the current product specification with the exchange. |
| Intended use and licensing | Whether the terms allow your intended use, including internal use, public display, commercial use or redistribution. |
| Current price and eligibility | The exchange’s current tariff, registration requirements and eligibility terms. Availability and terms may differ by product and customer. |
NSE’s broader data-vending page lists real-time, end-of-day/historical and corporate data, and states that its tariff is effective April 1, 2026. BSE’s tariff describes real-time, intraday snapshot, delayed, end-of-day and historical market data. These descriptions identify product categories, not a promise that every option is available to every user or in every geography. Confirm current availability and pricing directly with the relevant exchange before choosing a product.
The comparison is practical, not merely technical. A person who wants to check the latest displayed quote has different needs from a developer supplying a public app or an analyst working with historical data. A snapshot may meet a use that does not need continuous updates; a delayed product may meet a different workflow than a streaming product. More depth may be unnecessary if the intended use only calls for the best bid and ask. Conversely, a business should not assume a basic quote page supplies the content, delivery method or permissions its service requires.
NSE order-book depth options
NSE distinguishes feed depth by the number of bid and ask levels provided. Level 1 contains the best bid and ask; Level 2 provides up to five best bid and ask prices; Level 3 provides up to twenty; tick-by-tick provides the full order book. These are different levels of market detail, not interchangeable labels for a quote’s freshness. A feed with more depth is not automatically more current for every use; verify both its depth and delivery timing.

In other words, “how much of the order book?” and “how recently was it delivered?” are separate questions. Compare the depth tier with the actual task, then separately check whether the product is streaming, snapshot or delayed. The NSE descriptions establish the stated depth options, but users should confirm the current product specification, coverage and terms rather than infer every delivery detail from a level name.
Using BSE or NSE data in an app or business
A public quote page does not, by itself, establish permission to copy, redistribute or commercially display exchange data. NSE says market data accessed for commercial purposes is provided by NSE Data at a price approved under its governance process. BSE’s tariff describes information products for customer categories including data vendors, software vendors, app developers and researchers. A business should confirm the relevant exchange or provider’s subscription, display, redistribution and licensing terms before building a product around the data.
BSE’s official data-vending information describes a process that includes registration, KYC, plan selection, agreements and payment for access to its data products. Those are access steps identified for BSE’s data products; they are not a requirement established for a reader simply checking a publicly displayed quote. A company evaluating a BSE product should check which plan, agreement and payment terms apply to the particular product and intended use.
NSE’s broader data-vending page covers real-time, end-of-day/historical and corporate data, and its paid data page distinguishes the available order-book depth and snapshot options. The exchange’s descriptions are a starting point for understanding categories, not a substitute for confirming current specifications. Before integrating a feed, establish what is included, how it is delivered, whether it is delayed, and which display or redistribution rights are granted.

NSE’s official MCP page says: “The data is provided strictly for educational and informational purposes; it is not intended for real-time trading, investment advice, or commercial deployment.” The page also says that using its MCP interface and data does not grant rights to commercially exploit or redistribute the data, and disclaims endorsement or responsibility for output produced by third-party AI applications. Treat that interface according to its stated limits, not as a substitute for a licensed commercial feed.
For a person who wants only to check a quote, buying a subscription is not established as necessary. Licensed market-data access is an adjacent consideration for people building or operating data products. No referral or affiliate program is identified by the exchange descriptions, so a data subscription should be considered only where the user’s actual data, delivery and rights requirements call for it.
Common mistakes when checking a quote
- Assuming every displayed number is live. Look for the timestamp and explicit data-status label. A quote can be delayed or stale even when it is visible.
- Reading LTP without the comparison basis. Check previous close, change and percentage change, and remember that NSE’s percentage-change figure may be adjusted around specified corporate actions.
- Confusing data depth with data freshness. Bid-and-ask levels describe how much order-book information a feed contains; streaming, snapshot and delayed describe delivery timing.
- Assuming a public page grants reuse rights. Viewing a quote and redistributing exchange data are different uses. Check licensing before incorporating the data in a service, app or commercial display.
- Assuming a category description confirms your access. Product pages list types of data and feed options, but current eligibility, exact pricing and availability need confirmation with the exchange.
- Comparing two figures without checking their times. A streaming quote and a delayed or snapshot figure may reflect different points in time. Check the status and timestamp for each before treating a difference as a market move.
- Treating the 52-week range as a prediction. The high and low provide longer-period reference points. They do not guarantee that a price will stay within the range or signal what it will do next.
- Assuming all products cover the same information. Exchange data pages list multiple categories, including real-time, historical/end-of-day and corporate data. Confirm the coverage of the specific product rather than inferring it from the exchange name.
What to check before relying on a market-data figure
- The company name or symbol matches the security you intended to check.
- The page identifies the data as streaming, snapshot, delayed or end-of-day, as applicable.
- The timestamp is visible and sufficiently current for your purpose.
- LTP is considered with previous close, change, volume and other relevant fields.
- If comparing percentage change, account for the comparison basis and NSE’s stated potential adjustments around corporate actions.
- If the quote is being used in software or a business, the product terms cover that use and any display or redistribution.
- For a paid product, confirm the current specification, price, access requirements and eligibility with the exchange.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I check a BSE or NSE share price?
Start with the relevant exchange’s official market-data page and search by company name or trading symbol. Confirm the displayed company and symbol, then inspect the timestamp and data-status label. NSE’s equity market page shows quote fields and identifies its display as streaming when indicated. Check BSE’s specific page directly; its public display’s precise refresh rate is not established universally.

How do I know whether an NSE quote is live?
Check the NSE page’s data-status wording and its “As on” timestamp in IST when shown. NSE identifies its equity market display as streaming, but a visible number alone does not prove that a quote is current. If the timestamp is missing or old, or the page states that the data is delayed, do not treat it as a live market price.

What is the difference between a streaming quote, snapshot and delayed data?
A streaming display is described as updating as a stream; a snapshot is a captured view rather than a continuous stream; delayed data is not contemporaneous with the market. NSE describes snapshot products, including a 15-minute-delayed snapshot, and both NSE and BSE describe delayed-data products. Check the individual product’s terms because there is no single delay or refresh interval established for every page and feed.
What do LTP, volume and the 52-week high and low tell me?
LTP is the last traded price represented in the displayed quote. Volume and value are trading-activity fields, while the 52-week high and low provide longer-period reference points. Read LTP with the timestamp, previous close, change and percentage change. None of these figures alone explains why a price moved or predicts its next move.
What do NSE Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and tick-by-tick data mean?
NSE describes Level 1 as the best bid and ask, Level 2 as up to five best bid and ask prices, Level 3 as up to twenty, and tick-by-tick as the full order book. These labels describe market-data depth, not whether delivery is streaming or delayed. Check freshness separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a public BSE or NSE quote in my app or redistribute it?
Do not assume that public access grants reuse rights. NSE says market data for commercial purposes is provided by NSE Data at a price approved under its governance process, and BSE describes products for data vendors, software vendors, app developers and researchers. Contact the relevant exchange or provider to confirm subscription, display, redistribution and licensing terms for the intended use.
Does checking a quote require buying an exchange data subscription?
The exchange product information describes paid data access for particular products and uses, but it does not establish that a reader must subscribe simply to check a publicly displayed quote. For ordinary viewing, start with the public market-data page and verify its status. Consider a paid product when an application, business or other use needs its specified delivery, coverage or rights.
The Bottom Line
For a quick price check, use an official BSE or NSE market-data display, confirm the correct company or symbol, and read the timestamp and data-status label before treating the quote as current. Interpret LTP with the comparison and activity fields. If you need data for software or commercial use, compare the exchange’s current freshness, depth, coverage, price and licensing terms rather than assuming a public quote page or a “real-time” label covers everything.
