To tell whether your power supply can handle a graphics card, check the exact GPU model’s recommended system wattage and power connectors, then confirm your PSU has enough rated capacity and the required GPU cables. The wattage printed on the PSU alone cannot establish compatibility: board-partner cards can differ from reference models, and the rest of the PC affects the manufacturer’s system-power recommendation.
Check the exact graphics card, not just its GPU family
Find the card’s full model name, including the manufacturer and board-partner version. Then check both the GPU maker’s family specifications and the card maker’s specifications for that exact model. The reference GPU’s power limit, connector type, connector count, and system-power recommendation may not match a partner card.
For example, NVIDIA’s RTX 4080 family specifications list 320 W total graphics power and 750 W required system power for the reference RTX 4080 and RTX 4080 SUPER. NVIDIA also says add-in-card specifications may vary. AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT specifications list 304 W typical board power and a 750 W minimum PSU recommendation. These figures describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

GPU board power
Board power, total graphics power, or typical board power describes power associated with the graphics card. It is not a PSU recommendation for the whole computer.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Recommended or required system power
A system-power recommendation is guidance for the PSU capacity of a complete PC configuration. It accounts for the GPU alongside other components, so it can be higher than the card’s own power figure. Follow the recommendation for your exact card and configuration rather than applying a generic wattage rule.
As manufacturer examples, NVIDIA lists 285 W total graphics power and 650–700 W required system power, depending on model, for its RTX 4070 family. AMD lists 220 W typical board power and a 650 W minimum PSU recommendation for the Radeon RX 9070. NVIDIA cautions that “A higher power rating may be required depending on your system configuration.”

Verify the PSU’s connectors and cables
Read the PSU’s model label and manufacturer documentation. Confirm both its rated capacity and that it supplies the connector type and number required by the exact graphics card. A PSU that meets a wattage figure but lacks the required GPU power cables does not pass this check.

- Distinguish PCIe GPU power connectors from CPU/EPS connectors; they are not interchangeable.
- Check whether the card’s specification calls for PCIe 8-pin connectors, a PCIe Gen 5 cable, or another specific input.
- Confirm the PSU itself provides the required native cables. Do not assume an adapter makes an otherwise unsuitable PSU compatible.
Connector power figures are not universal guarantees. NVIDIA’s workstation guidance describes a particular 250 W card case in which an 8-pin connector may carry up to 175 W if the PSU provides at least 18 A of dedicated current to that connector; it also warns that some cards require the auxiliary input to supply the card’s full total graphics power. Use the exact card and PSU documentation rather than inferring capacity from a connector shape alone.

Use the specifications together
| Reference graphics card | Board or graphics power | System PSU guidance | Reference power inputs |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 / RTX 4080 SUPER | 320 W total graphics power | 750 W required system power | Three PCIe 8-pin cables via included adapter, or one 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 family | 285 W total graphics power | 650–700 W required system power, depending on model | Two PCIe 8-pin cables via adapter or one 300 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable for reference configurations; some partner models use one PCIe 8-pin cable |
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT | 304 W typical board power | 750 W minimum PSU recommendation | Two 8-pin additional power connectors |
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 | 220 W typical board power | 650 W minimum PSU recommendation | Two 8-pin additional power connectors |
These are official reference-family or product-page figures, not a guarantee for every card sold under the same GPU name. Partner models can change power limits and connectors, and system configuration can affect the PSU recommendation. Check the manufacturer’s current listing for the exact card before buying or installing it.
Make the decision for your PC
- Identify the GPU precisely. Record its brand, full model, and partner-board version where applicable.
- Look up its requirements. Find the GPU maker’s system PSU recommendation and the card maker’s exact specifications for board power and connectors.
- Identify your PSU. Read its model and rated capacity from the unit label, then consult the PSU maker’s documentation for its GPU cables.
- Compare capacity and connections. Check that the PSU meets the applicable system-power guidance and provides the required GPU connectors through its own cables.
- Account for the full system. If the manufacturer says the recommendation depends on configuration, do not treat the reference figure as an unconditional guarantee.
- Resolve uncertainty from model-specific documentation. Ask the PSU or GPU maker about the exact models instead of relying on a broad rule such as “this GPU needs a certain number of watts.”
When a PSU replacement may be needed
If the installed unit falls short of the exact card’s system-power recommendation or lacks its required GPU cables, a replacement PSU matched to the card and the rest of the PC may be necessary. Choose by the target system’s actual requirements, then verify the replacement’s rated capacity and connector set in the PSU maker’s specifications; a wattage class by itself is not a compatibility guarantee.
