Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a working optical drive. Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that should receive the entitlement, connect the console to the internet, install available system updates, insert the disc, and launch the game. If Xbox shows an entitlement flow or the title appears in that account’s digital library, the disc is supported. Xbox Series S cannot perform this check because it has no disc drive.

What Xbox disc-to-digital conversion actually does

Xbox describes this feature as claiming a digital entitlement from a supported physical disc. It is not a process that copies the contents of a disc into a new file or changes the disc itself. The account used during the claim receives digital access to the title, while the original disc remains usable.

In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox said that “most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” The same announcement said the rollout was starting with thousands of titles. “Most” is not “all,” so the only reliable test for a particular disc is the entitlement flow after insertion and launch.

Where a title supports them, Xbox says a claimed entitlement can also provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Those benefits are conditional on the individual game; claiming a disc does not automatically add every Xbox service.

Check the disc and console before you begin

Identify the disc generation

Start by identifying which Xbox generation the disc belongs to. The announced disc-to-digital rule specifically covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs belong to the separate backward-compatibility system and must be checked against its catalog.

  • Xbox One disc: A candidate for the announced disc-to-digital entitlement flow.
  • Xbox Series X disc: A candidate for the same flow.
  • Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc: Check the backward-compatibility catalog instead of assuming it qualifies for a standalone digital entitlement.

Use a console with an optical drive

The physical check requires an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a working disc drive. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot read the disc, install from it, or trigger the physical-disc eligibility check.

If you need hardware that can read the disc, look for an Xbox Series X with an optical drive. The account that will own the entitlement should be signed in on that console when you perform the check.

Prepare the account and connection

  • Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that should receive the entitlement. Do not use a guest account or a different family member’s profile by mistake.
  • Connect the console to the internet. Xbox’s announcement does not publish a separate offline eligibility method.
  • Install available console system updates. An outdated system can prevent the current entitlement flow from appearing.
  • Have the exact disc and its packaging available. Edition, region, bonus content and disc identity can affect what Xbox recognizes.

Step-by-step: test an Xbox One or Series X disc

  1. Sign in to the intended account. From the Xbox home screen, select the profile that should own the digital entitlement. Verify the gamertag before inserting the disc.
  2. Confirm internet access and updates. Open the console’s Settings area, check the System section for available updates, and let the console finish any required restart. Make sure the network connection is active afterward.
  3. Insert the game disc. Use the optical drive on the Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Wait for the console to identify the disc rather than immediately switching profiles.
  4. Launch the game. Select the game tile from the home screen or from My games & apps and start it. Xbox’s stated procedure is to insert a supported disc and launch the game.
  5. Watch for the entitlement flow. A supported title may show a claim or entitlement message, or the title may become available in the signed-in account’s digital library. Follow the on-screen instructions and allow any required license or game update to complete.
  6. Confirm the result in the library. After the claim finishes, open the account’s owned games or digital library and look for the title. The exact presentation can vary by console software and game edition.
  7. Check optional digital services. If the title supports Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming, review those services after the entitlement is visible. Support is title-specific, so the presence of a digital entitlement alone does not prove that either service is available.
  8. Keep the physical disc. Store the original disc even after a successful claim. Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as it did before, and title-specific conditions still apply.

How to interpret what you see

An entitlement prompt appears

This is the clearest confirmation that the disc is eligible for the feature on that account and console. Complete the prompt, wait for the license to register, and verify that the game is listed in the account’s digital library.

Record the exact edition shown on screen. A standard edition, deluxe edition, bundle, or region-specific release can produce different entitlements. If the digital listing does not match the disc you intended to claim, stop before accepting and verify the disc and account.

The game appears in the digital library after launch

Some titles may not use a prominent “convert” button. If launching the disc results in the title appearing as owned or installable in the signed-in account’s digital library, treat that library result as the confirmation. Check the title page for the edition and supported features before installing additional content.

No entitlement option appears

No prompt does not prove that the disc is damaged. Xbox says not every title is available, and several other conditions can prevent a match. Work through the checks below before trying another disc or console.

  • Confirm that the disc is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X release rather than an Xbox 360 or original Xbox release.
  • Check that the correct account was signed in before insertion and launch.
  • Compare the exact edition, region and disc label with the game shown on screen.
  • Confirm that the console has a working optical drive and can read other known-good discs.
  • Install pending console updates and restart the console while connected to the internet.
  • Review current Xbox announcements or support information for the title. Xbox’s “most” wording means individual games can be excluded.

Disc-to-digital, backward compatibility and Smart Delivery are different

These terms are often used together, but they describe different licensing or version systems. Use the generation and the result of the insertion test to identify which one applies.

What changes for Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs

An older disc should not be judged by the Xbox One and Series X disc-to-digital rule. First find the game in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog and check whether it is included. The catalog also provides a link for excluded games.

For a compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox title, inserting the disc into a compatible Xbox console downloads the backward-compatible version. The disc remains a physical proof of ownership: it must stay in the drive whenever you play. That behavior is different from claiming a digital entitlement through the newer disc-to-digital flow.

If an older game is absent from the compatibility catalog, inserting its disc will not make it compatible merely because the console has an optical drive. A disc drive verifies and reads media; it does not add a game to the backward-compatibility program.

What Xbox Series S owners can and cannot do

What the Series S cannot do

Xbox Series S has no optical drive. You cannot insert an Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc into it, so it cannot perform the physical eligibility test or download a game from that disc.

How to check a disc for an account used on Series S

Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a working drive to perform the claim while signed in to the account that should own it. After the claim is registered, sign in to that same account on the Series S and inspect the digital library. Installation and service availability still depend on the title and edition; the Series S itself does not turn an unsupported disc into a digital license.

Do not treat ownership of a Series S as evidence that a particular disc qualifies. The eligibility decision is made when Xbox recognizes the physical disc on a console with an optical drive.

Edition, region and account checks when a claim fails

Edition mismatch

Review the disc label and the title page shown by the console. A disc from a special bundle may identify a base game, expansion, or collection differently from the edition you expected. Claim only after the displayed entitlement corresponds to the physical product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional differences

Region can affect licensing and store availability. If the disc was imported, compare its region with the account and console store region. A failed claim is not proof that every copy of the game is excluded; it may indicate that the specific regional release is not recognized for that account.

Wrong signed-in account

The account present when the entitlement is claimed is the account to check afterward. If several profiles use the console, sign out of the others or carefully verify the active profile before launching. Do not assume that an entitlement shown to one account automatically belongs to another.

Network or system state

Because the published procedure requires inserting the disc and launching while connected, retry after restoring the network connection and installing updates. If the console reads the disc but still shows no entitlement flow, move on to the generation, edition, region and availability checks rather than repeatedly ejecting the same disc.

How to document a successful check

Keeping a short record prevents confusion when several editions or accounts are involved. Note:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The console used: Xbox One or Xbox Series X.
  • The account gamertag that was signed in.
  • The game title, edition and disc generation.
  • Whether an entitlement prompt appeared or the title appeared in the digital library after launch.
  • Whether the resulting listing identifies Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming support.
  • Any region or bundle information printed on the disc or case.

This record is especially useful if you later install the title on another Xbox console. It also distinguishes a confirmed entitlement from an assumption based only on Smart Delivery or backward compatibility.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Is the disc an Xbox One or Xbox Series X release?
  2. Are you using an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a working optical drive?
  3. Is the intended Microsoft/Xbox account signed in?
  4. Is the console online and updated?
  5. Did you insert the disc and launch the game?
  6. Did an entitlement flow appear or did the title enter the account’s digital library?
  7. If no, did you check the exact edition, region, account, generation and current title availability?
  8. If the disc is older, did you check the backward-compatibility catalog and its excluded-games list?
  9. Are you treating Smart Delivery, Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming as separate, title-specific features rather than automatic proof of conversion?

Key points to remember

  • The physical test is performed by inserting the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launching the game.
  • Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the announced feature, but not every title is available.
  • Xbox Series S cannot read a disc and cannot perform the check.
  • Compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs use backward compatibility and generally require the disc to remain inserted during play.
  • Smart Delivery is a developer- or publisher-implemented cross-generation version system, not proof of a standalone digital license.
  • Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits appear only when the individual title supports them.
