Check account-level credentials at Hugging Face → Settings → Access Tokens. That page shows your personal tokens and lets you manage them. Remove retired credentials there, replacing any still-needed token with the narrowest role and resource scope. On a computer, use hf auth list to see locally saved copies and hf auth logout to remove them from that machine. Local logout does not revoke a token on Hugging Face’s servers or erase copies in CI systems, notebooks, shell history, or other computers.
If a token may have leaked, rotate or delete it immediately. A token belonging to someone else can be submitted to Hugging Face’s global revocation endpoint, which invalidates a matching credential everywhere. Never put a raw token directly in a command, log, source file, or support ticket.
Where to see your Hugging Face tokens
Open the account-level token list
- Sign in to your Hugging Face account.
- Open your account settings.
- Select Access Tokens.
- Review every listed token’s name, role, and intended use.
The Access Tokens page is the authoritative list for your personal, server-side credentials. It is where you delete an unused token or refresh one that must remain in service. A token shown there can have copies elsewhere, so checking the page is the first step rather than the complete cleanup.

Before deleting anything, map each token to the application, repository workflow, notebook, build runner, or computer that uses it. A meaningful name helps you distinguish an active deployment from an abandoned experiment. If a token has no known owner or purpose, treat that uncertainty as a reason to retire it, not as a reason to keep it indefinitely.

Do not confuse a token’s name with its secret value. The name is an identifier for administration; the value is the credential that must be protected. You normally need the name to select a token for deletion or refresh, but you should not copy the secret into a spreadsheet, ticket, or inventory document.
Understand the roles before you revoke or replace a token
Hugging Face defines three user-token roles. The role controls the broad class of actions available; fine-grained permissions additionally limit which resources the credential can reach.
| Role | What it permits | When it fits | Security consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Read-only access | Downloading models or datasets and other workflows that do not publish changes | Safer than write access when a process never needs to modify repositories |
| Write | Read access plus the ability to write to repositories | Publishing or updating repository content | A compromise can alter repositories, so do not use it for download-only jobs |
| Fine-grained | Access restricted to selected resources and permissions | Production applications, automation, or a job that needs only particular repositories | Limits the blast radius if the credential is exposed |
Hugging Face recommends creating one access token per app or use and recommends fine-grained tokens for production. Separating credentials means you can retire one integration without breaking unrelated services, and it makes audit trails easier to understand.

When comparing a replacement, check both the role and the resource scope. A fine-grained token is not simply another name for a read token: it can be limited to selected resources and permissions. Conversely, a broad read token may still expose every resource the owner can read. Choose the smallest combination that supports the actual operation.
Decide whether a token should be removed
Remove tokens tied to retired work
Delete credentials associated with a decommissioned project, an old notebook, a replaced computer, a discontinued integration, or a temporary test. An unknown token should not be retained merely as an emergency spare: you cannot reliably monitor where it has been copied or who can use it.
Replace an active token safely
If a running workflow still needs access, create a replacement before deleting the old credential. Give the replacement the smallest role and resource scope that passes the workflow’s actual requirements. Update the secret in the application, CI configuration, scheduler, notebook, or deployment platform; run a controlled test; then remove the previous token from the Access Tokens page. This order prevents an avoidable outage while ensuring the old value is no longer accepted.
- Identify every consumer of the existing token.
- Create a replacement with a distinct name and the narrowest usable permissions.
- Install the replacement in each consumer without printing its value.
- Run a read, publish, or other minimal operation that proves the new credential works.
- Delete or refresh the old credential in account settings.
- Remove remaining copies from machines, secret stores, notebooks, and logs.
Delete versus refresh
Use deletion when the credential has no remaining purpose. Use refresh when the integration should continue under a new token value. In both cases, the old value must be treated as unusable after the server-side change; do not leave it embedded in a script on the assumption that it will be needed later.

Remove tokens saved on your computer with the Hugging Face CLI
List locally stored credentials
From the computer you want to clean, run:
hf auth list
hf auth list shows access tokens saved by the Hugging Face CLI on that machine. hf auth ls is an alias for the same listing command. The result concerns local storage only; it is not a second, independent account inventory.

Log out one named token
After identifying the credential’s local name, remove that copy with:
hf auth logout --token-name NAME
This deletes the named token from the current machine and removes it from the machine’s Git credentials. Replace NAME with the name shown by the list command. The command does not delete the corresponding server-side token from your account.
Log out every saved token on that machine
To remove all tokens saved locally, run:
hf auth logout
Use the no-name form when the computer is being handed to another person, retired, or rebuilt, or when you cannot confidently identify every stored credential. It clears the CLI’s saved copies on that computer, but it cannot reach copies stored on another workstation, a build runner, a container, a notebook, a password manager, or a shell-history file.
When local cleanup is not enough
A token can remain usable after local logout because the same value may have been copied elsewhere. Search the locations that can inject credentials into the workflow: environment-variable configuration, CI or deployment secrets, container and virtual-machine images, notebook cells and outputs, scripts, Git credential stores, shell history, log aggregation, and team secret managers. Remove the old value from each location after changing it on the server.
Check both interactive and unattended paths. A developer workstation may use the CLI store while a scheduled build uses a CI secret with the same token. A notebook can retain a value in an executed cell or output even after the environment variable is unset. Cleaning only the path you happen to be using leaves the other copy active.
Respond immediately to a leaked token
If the token is yours
Open Settings → Access Tokens and delete or refresh the exposed token immediately. If an attacker could have read the value, assume it has been copied even when you have no evidence of use. Replace it in every legitimate consumer, then inspect recent activity and repository changes for anything unexpected.
Do not wait to determine whether the credential was actually used. The purpose of rotation or deletion is to make the exposed value unusable, after which you can investigate where it appeared and whether any repositories or workflows changed.
If you find somebody else’s token
Hugging Face documents a global emergency endpoint for invalidating a matching credential:
https://huggingface.co/api/credentials/revoke
Send an HTTP POST request with the raw token in the JSON credentials array. A safe request pattern keeps the value in an environment variable rather than placing it in the command itself:

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Set HF_LEAKED_TOKEN through a protected secret input or file, not by typing the token into a command that your shell records. Unset the variable and delete any temporary file after the request. The endpoint invalidates matching tokens everywhere, not merely within one organization.
Interpret the response correctly
The revocation endpoint returns 202 Accepted whether or not the submitted token existed. That behavior prevents the response from being used as a token-validity test. A successful HTTP response therefore means the revocation request was accepted, not that the credential was confirmed as active.
Keep the value out of history and logs
Hugging Face advises passing tokens through environment variables or files and avoiding raw values in command lines. Do not paste a token into an issue, chat, terminal recording, CI output, debugging trace, or application log. Mask secret-bearing environment variables in build output, and rotate a token if it has already appeared in any of those places.
Organization and service-account tokens have different boundaries
Organization member tokens
Team and Enterprise organizations can list member tokens and identify inactive or unused credentials. Revoked tokens are hidden by default in the organization listing; an administrator can turn on Show revoked tokens when auditing past access.
Organization-level revocation cuts off the token’s access to that organization. It does not necessarily invalidate the owner’s access to personal resources or to another organization. An administrator should therefore revoke the organization relationship and ask the token owner to delete or refresh the credential globally when the token itself may be exposed.
Service-account tokens
Service-account credentials are managed by the organization rather than by an individual member. Administrators can change permissions, rotate a token, or delete it. Rotation makes the previous value stop working immediately; deletion permanently revokes the service-account credential.
A service-account token is displayed only once when it is created or rotated. Store it in an approved secret store at that moment. If the value is lost, do not expect the interface to reveal it later; rotate the credential and update its consumers instead.
Compare the places a token can exist and the scope of revocation
| Dimension | What to check | Effect of removing access |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Individual user or organization service account | User settings govern personal tokens; organization administrators govern service-account credentials |
| Role | Read, write, or fine-grained | Determines the actions available to a consumer |
| Resource scope | All accessible resources or selected resources | Fine-grained scope can limit the impact of a compromise |
| Location | Account credential, CLI cache, Git credentials, CI secret, notebook, or another copy | Server-side deletion changes acceptance of the value; local logout removes only the selected machine’s copy |
| Revocation boundary | Everywhere or one organization | Global revocation invalidates the matching token everywhere; organization revocation removes access to that organization while other access may remain |
Prevent the next token leak
Issue separate credentials
Use a distinct token for each application or use. A download job, a publishing workflow, and a developer workstation should not all depend on one credential. Separate names and scopes let you disable a single path without interrupting unrelated work.

Prefer least privilege
Choose read access for read-only jobs. Use write access only where repository changes are required. For production, use a fine-grained token restricted to the specific resources and operations the service needs. A narrower token cannot prevent every incident, but it reduces what an exposed value can reach.
Store secrets outside source and command text
Inject credentials through a protected environment-variable mechanism or a secret file with controlled permissions. Keep them out of source repositories, container layers, notebook output, shell history, and application logs. Ensure error handling does not echo request headers or authentication values.
Plan rotation before it is urgent
Document the token’s owner, consumers, scope, and replacement procedure. Test that each service can accept a replacement before an emergency occurs. For service accounts, record where the one-time displayed value is stored and who can rotate it; never rely on being able to view that value again.

The website lists a token, but hf auth list does not
The commands are looking at different inventories. The website shows account-level credentials; the CLI command shows tokens saved on the current computer. Check whether the workflow uses another machine, a container, a CI runner, or an environment variable instead of the local CLI store.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Local logout did not stop API access
Local logout removed one stored copy, not the server-side credential. Delete or refresh the token in Settings → Access Tokens, then replace every remaining copy. If the value was exposed, treat server-side rotation or deletion as mandatory.
An organization administrator revoked access, but the token still works elsewhere
Organization revocation is scoped to that organization. The token owner’s personal resources or access to another organization may continue to work. Delete or refresh the user token globally when the credential itself should no longer be valid.
The revocation API returned 202 Accepted
That is the documented response for both matching and non-matching submissions. It confirms acceptance of the revocation request, not whether the token was valid. Do not use the endpoint to probe credentials.
A service-account token was not saved when it was created
The value is shown only once at creation or rotation. Rotate the service-account token, store the new value securely, update each consumer, and then verify that the previous value no longer works.
A replacement token breaks a workflow
First compare the old and new role and resource scope. A read token cannot perform a publish operation, and a fine-grained token may omit a repository or permission the job needs. Correct the replacement’s scope or consumer configuration, test the smallest required operation, and only then retire the old credential.

You cannot tell which machine holds a token
Start with the token’s name and intended use in the Access Tokens page, then inspect each known workstation, runner, notebook, and secret store associated with that use. If ownership remains uncertain, refresh or delete the server-side token and issue a new, separately named credential to the confirmed consumer.
A safe removal sequence
- Inventory tokens in Settings → Access Tokens and identify each consumer.
- Classify every credential by owner, role, resource scope, and location.
- For active work, issue a least-privilege replacement and test it.
- Delete or refresh the old server-side token.
- Run
hf auth liston each relevant computer and remove local copies with the named or all-token logout command. - Delete stale values from CI, notebooks, files, logs, Git credentials, and other secret stores.
- If exposure is suspected, use the documented emergency revocation process and investigate where the value appeared.
Keep a record of the action without recording the secret itself: token name, owner, role, scope, consumer, replacement date, and whether local copies were removed. That gives future administrators enough context to repeat the cleanup safely without creating another credential leak.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are my Hugging Face access tokens?
Sign in, open Settings, and select Access Tokens. That page lists and manages your personal server-side credentials. Locally saved CLI copies are separate and can be listed with hf auth list.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I revoke an old Hugging Face token?
In Settings → Access Tokens, select the unused token and delete it. If an active workflow needs access, create and test a replacement first, then refresh or delete the old token and remove its remaining copies.
Does hf auth logout revoke my token everywhere?
No. It removes the selected local copy, and the no-name form removes all saved CLI tokens on that computer. Revoke the server-side credential in Access Tokens to stop it working elsewhere.
What should I do if my Hugging Face token leaked?
Delete or refresh your own token immediately in Access Tokens, replace it in every consumer, and remove exposed copies from logs, history, notebooks, CI, and secret stores. A token you discover belonging to someone else can be submitted to the global credentials revocation endpoint.
What is the difference between read, write, and fine-grained tokens?
Read tokens are read-only. Write tokens add repository write access. Fine-grained tokens can be restricted to selected resources and permissions, reducing the impact of exposure; Hugging Face recommends them for production.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can an organization administrator revoke a member’s token globally?
Organization revocation removes that token’s access to the organization, but the token may continue to work for the owner’s personal resources or another organization. Global deletion or refresh must be done by the token owner, unless the matching credential is submitted to the global revocation endpoint.
How are service-account tokens handled?
Organization administrators can change permissions, rotate, or delete them. The token value is shown only once when created or rotated, so store it securely immediately. Rotation makes the previous value stop working.
Does a 202 response prove that a leaked token was valid?
No. The revocation endpoint returns 202 Accepted whether or not a submitted token existed. It confirms that the revocation request was accepted, not that the credential was active.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings → Access Tokens for server-side Hugging Face credentials and hf auth list/hf auth logout for copies on a particular computer. Remove retired tokens, replace active ones with separate least-privilege credentials, and treat any exposed value as compromised. Global revocation, organization revocation, and local logout affect different boundaries, so clean every location where the token may have been stored.
