On Windows, open Settings > System > About and read the RAM amount under Device specifications. On a Mac, open Activity Monitor > Memory and read Physical Memory. iPhone and iPad settings show storage, not RAM, while Android menus differ by manufacturer and model.
First, identify which number you need
“How much RAM do I have?” can refer to three different measurements. Separating them prevents the most common mistake: reading a storage figure and treating it as memory.

RAM is volatile: its contents are lost when the computer or phone is restarted or turned off. Storage is persistent. A phone advertised with a large number of gigabytes may be describing storage rather than RAM, so check the field name before recording the result.

Check installed RAM in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Microsoft’s documented route works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It reports the installed amount, rather than a momentary reading of how busy the memory is.

- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open About.
- In Device specifications, find the entry showing the installed RAM.
Record the value exactly as Windows displays it, including the unit (usually GB). The same section includes System type. That entry describes the Windows system architecture and is useful context when diagnosing compatibility, but it is a separate specification from the RAM amount.
If the Windows value looks different from the advertised specification
A computer maker may advertise the physical memory installed in the machine, while Windows reports the amount available to the operating system. Hardware-reserved memory or the way the system presents memory can make the figures appear slightly different. Use the label in Device specifications as the Windows-installed value, and do not substitute a storage capacity shown elsewhere in Settings.
Windows 10 support context
Microsoft’s device-information guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft also notes that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not change where the installed-RAM field is located, but it matters when documenting an older PC or planning an operating-system upgrade.
Check installed RAM on a Mac
macOS uses the term Physical Memory for the installed RAM total. Apple’s Activity Monitor provides both that hardware figure and several live-usage indicators, so read the correct field.
- Open the Activity Monitor app. You can find it with the Mac’s app search or in the Utilities area of Applications.
- Click the Memory tab.
- Look at the bottom of the window for Physical Memory. Apple defines this as “The amount of RAM installed.”
Do not confuse the three Activity Monitor values
- Physical Memory is the installed RAM capacity you are trying to check.
- Memory Used is the amount currently occupied by macOS and apps. It changes while you work.
- Swap Used is space on the startup disk used to move data to and from RAM when needed. It is storage activity, not additional installed RAM.
The Memory Pressure graph indicates how efficiently memory is serving current processing needs. It is a performance condition, not a replacement for the installed-capacity number. A Mac can show substantial Memory Used while operating normally; the installed total remains the value beside Physical Memory.
When you need both capacity and live usage
Write down Physical Memory first if you are documenting the Mac’s specification. Then note Memory Used, Swap Used, and the Memory Pressure graph separately if you are investigating slowdowns. Keeping those observations separate prevents a temporary workload from being reported as the Mac’s hardware capacity.
What iPhone and iPad settings can—and cannot—tell you
The cited Apple user guides do not provide a built-in RAM field in the standard iPhone or iPad settings screens. They document storage information instead.

Those entries describe storage. Do not record Capacity as the amount of RAM.

See which apps use storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, using the label shown on your device.
- Review Apple’s recommendations and the per-app storage amounts.
This screen is useful for deciding what occupies persistent space, but it does not establish the device’s installed RAM. If you need the RAM specification for a particular iPhone or iPad model, use documentation for that exact model rather than inferring it from either storage screen.
Why an iPhone or iPad may seem to have a “memory” number
Apple’s menus and support terminology often use “storage” for the capacity available to apps and files. In everyday conversation, people sometimes call that memory. For a technical record, label it as storage and keep it distinct from RAM; the two serve different purposes and are measured in different places.
Check RAM on an Android phone
Android does not have one manufacturer-independent settings path for installed RAM in the official guidance covered here. Menu names and available fields vary by phone maker, model, Android release, and regional software.

Start with the phone’s own Settings search
- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search field for terms such as RAM, memory, or device information, if your phone provides search.
- Read the result’s label carefully. A field explicitly labeled RAM or memory may be the installed amount; a field labeled storage, internal storage, or available space is not.
The search approach is a way to locate a manufacturer-specific page, not a guaranteed Android procedure. If no installed-RAM entry appears, consult the support documentation for the exact model and carrier or regional variant. Google’s general Android help explains how to check available storage and directs users to the manufacturer for device-specific information; it does not establish a universal installed-RAM screen.
Do not use a blanket “About phone” path as a promise
Some Android phones may place hardware details under an About-phone page, while others expose memory in a device-care, performance, or diagnostic area—or do not show the installed total in Settings at all. Because these layouts are not consistent, instructions that claim every Android phone follows Settings > About phone > RAM can send readers to a page that does not exist on their device.
Separate Android storage from RAM
Google’s storage guidance concerns the persistent space used by apps and files. A storage bar, “available space” figure, or internal-storage total should be reported as storage even if the phone’s marketing materials use the word “memory.” Only a clearly identified RAM or installed-memory field answers the RAM question.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reading phone storage as RAM
If an iPhone, iPad, or Android screen shows capacity, available space, or per-app usage, label the result as storage. Return to model-specific documentation for RAM instead of converting or guessing from the storage number.
Reporting current use as installed memory
A live figure can change seconds after an app opens or closes. On a Mac, use Physical Memory for the installed amount and reserve Memory Used for the current workload. The same principle applies to any platform that exposes both capacity and usage.

Confusing swap with extra RAM
Swap uses storage to hold data moved to and from RAM. It can help the system continue working when memory demand is high, but it does not increase the amount of physical RAM installed. On macOS, the relevant indicator is Swap Used.
Assuming all devices in a platform share one menu
Windows’ documented path is consistent across the two covered versions, and Apple documents the Mac Activity Monitor route. Android phone interfaces are manufacturer-specific, while Apple’s cited iPhone and iPad screens concern storage. Match the instructions to the device and operating system rather than relying on a generic shortcut.
Leaving out the unit or field name
When you record a result for technical support, include the number, unit, operating system, and field name—for example, “Windows, Device specifications, installed RAM: [value shown].” For a Mac, identify the value as “Physical Memory.” This makes it clear that you did not copy a storage or live-use reading.

- Identify the device type and operating-system version.
- Open the platform-specific screen described above.
- Copy the number and unit exactly as displayed.
- Write down the field name: Device specifications, Physical Memory, or the exact manufacturer label.
- If the screen is a phone storage page, record it separately as storage and mark installed RAM as unavailable from that page.
- For Android, add the exact model number and consult its manufacturer documentation if Settings does not show RAM.
This record is useful when requesting support, checking whether a software requirement fits a device, or comparing two machines. It also preserves the distinction between a fixed hardware specification and a temporary usage reading.
What to do when the expected entry is missing
Windows
Recheck that you opened System > About, not a storage-usage page. The installed amount belongs under Device specifications. If you are using a different Windows interface or a managed computer, use the Settings search for “About” and then look specifically for that section.
Mac
Make sure Activity Monitor’s Memory tab is selected. If you are looking at CPU, Energy, Disk, or Network, the RAM fields will not be visible. At the bottom of the Memory view, choose Physical Memory, not the changing usage or swap figures.
iPhone or iPad
There may be no RAM value in the standard settings pages covered by Apple’s guides. Do not treat a missing RAM field as a malfunction. Use About or the device-storage page for storage only, then consult documentation for the exact model if RAM is required.
Android
If Settings search finds only storage results, the manufacturer may not expose installed RAM in that interface. Record the model and seek the maker’s support documentation. Avoid substituting “available storage” for RAM simply because it is the only memory-related figure shown.

Is RAM the same as storage?
No. RAM is short-term working memory used while apps and the operating system run, and its contents disappear when the device powers off. Storage holds apps and files persistently. A Capacity, Available, internal-storage, or free-space number is therefore not an installed-RAM measurement.
Which Windows number should I send to technical support?
Send the value shown in Settings > System > About > Device specifications, including its unit. Include the Windows version and, if useful, the separate System type entry. Do not send a Task Manager usage figure as the hardware total.
Why does my Mac show several memory numbers?
