The most reliable way to see which camera, speaker, thermostat, television, hub, or other smart-home product is consuming your internet is to open your router or mesh system’s app, select the individual device, and read its traffic or usage panel. Start with Devices, Clients, or a network map, then look for Usage, Traffic Usage, Activity, or Bandwidth Monitor.
Before interpreting the figure, identify whether it is a live speed (Mbps) or an accumulated amount (MB or GB), note the time range, and check whether the report covers internet traffic only. Router dashboards differ substantially: some show a current rate, some retain daily totals, and some omit traffic that stays inside your home network.
What the router is actually measuring
A usage dashboard can display two different measurements:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Speed or rate: A live value such as Mbps (megabits per second) describes how quickly data is moving at that moment. It can rise and fall every few seconds.
- Volume: A historical value such as MB or GB is the amount transferred during a selected period, such as today, the last seven days, or the last month.
Download is data received by the device, while upload is data sent from it. Some interfaces show the two separately and others add them together. For example, eero describes its historical graph as total uploaded plus downloaded data. A camera sending video to a cloud service can therefore have unusually high upload usage, while a streaming television usually has mostly download usage.

Most consumer routers report traffic that crosses the internet (WAN) connection. That is useful for finding devices that are consuming an ISP data allowance, but it is not a complete record of every byte on your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. TP-Link says its traffic report excludes transfers between devices on the local network, and eero says its historical reports omit device-to-device traffic. A camera stream viewed on a television in the same home, or a file copied between two local computers, may not appear in the internet total.
Allow for reporting delay. TP-Link documents a normal delay of approximately 1–5 minutes before traffic appears. A live graph can also look idle between bursts: eero notes that its live rate refreshes every five seconds and may show pauses even while a stream is playing. Treat a brief zero as a snapshot, not proof that a device has stopped communicating.
Find a device-level usage view
Use the app or web administration page for the router that is actually routing the device’s traffic. The labels vary by manufacturer, but the workflow is usually:
- Open the router or mesh Wi-Fi app, or sign in to its local web interface.
- Open Devices, Clients, Connected devices, or Network map.
- Select the smart-home device. Look for Usage, Traffic Usage, Activity, Bandwidth, or a similar panel.
- Choose the period and whether you want upload, download, or combined traffic.
- Record the device name and reporting period before comparing it with another device or with your ISP’s total.
If the name is unfamiliar, use the identifying details shown by the router—manufacturer, IP address, MAC address, connection type, or online status. Once you identify a device, rename it in the router app when that option is available. A clear name such as “Garage camera” prevents confusion when the same model appears again after a reset.
Google Home and Google Wifi
In Google Home, go to Favourites > Wi-Fi > Devices, then select a device. Google says this list includes devices that used the network in the last 30 days, including devices that are currently offline, and shows upload and download amounts for each. The totals displayed next to Devices represent internet (WAN) traffic.

People using the older Google Wifi app can open Network > Devices and select a device for usage details. Network-wide views offer real time, today, 7 days, and 30 days choices. Google’s device list covers Wi-Fi and Ethernet clients connected directly to the Google router or point; a device routed through another gateway may not be represented.
TP-Link Deco or Tether
Depending on the model and app version, open Network > Traffic Usage, or open Network > (Online) Clients, select a device, and choose Traffic Usage. In Day view, TP-Link documents hourly and daily information over the previous seven days. In Week view, it shows daily information over the previous four weeks. Select upload, download, or a combined view.

Activity from a browser and an app that use the same domain can be combined, and background requests can be assigned to that category. ASUS routers
Open Bandwidth Monitor to see current total upload and download and the current bandwidth used by each client. ASUS also provides optional app analysis. Its documentation cautions that SSL-encrypted app traffic may be difficult to identify and can be placed in a general category. The per-client byte rate can still help you find a busy device even when the app name is not specific.
Motorola motosync
In the motosync connected-device page, a device can show Internet Usage Today, its IP and MAC addresses, and an overall bandwidth snapshot. The exact fields depend on the gateway and firmware, so use the device details to confirm that you selected the correct client.
Other routers and mesh systems
Search the manufacturer’s support site or manual for the exact model and firmware, using terms such as “client traffic,” “per-device bandwidth,” or “data usage.” Do not assume that a similarly named model has the same menus. Some products expose only a current rate, while others retain totals for a limited period or require a subscription for longer history.
How to read a smart-home device’s numbers
Use the time interval that matches your question
For “Which device is using data right now?”, use a live rate and watch the device for several minutes. For “Why did I exceed my monthly allowance?”, use a daily or monthly total that covers the same billing period as your ISP. A seven-day chart cannot be compared directly with a 30-day ISP figure.
Capture both directions when diagnosing a camera. A cloud camera may upload continuously even when nobody is watching, while a smart speaker generally transfers small bursts. A television can generate large download totals during high-resolution streaming. Combined totals are convenient for ranking devices, but separate upload and download values explain the cause.

Do not equate local traffic with internet usage
If a camera records to a local network video recorder, or a phone controls a lamp through the home network, the transfer may remain on the LAN. A WAN-focused dashboard can show little or none of it. Conversely, a camera that sends clips to a cloud service will appear in internet upload totals. Use the router’s scope statement before deciding that a device is consuming or not consuming your ISP data.
Interpret app categories cautiously
Domain-based categories can merge unrelated activity and include background connections. Encryption can prevent a router from identifying an app accurately. Per-device totals are generally more dependable than a category label. If the category is “general,” compare the device’s bytes over time rather than assuming the router has identified every service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when a device is missing or the chart is blank
Verify the network path
- Confirm that the device is connected to the router or mesh system whose app you opened. A second access point, ISP gateway, extender, or separate travel router may be managing it instead.
- Check whether it is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some dashboards list both, while others show only clients attached directly to a particular point.
- Look at the IP address, MAC address, manufacturer, and connection status. Match these values with the device’s app or label before renaming it.
Check model, firmware, and operating mode
Feature availability is model-specific. GL.iNet says its Data Statistics feature began in firmware v4.9, lists supported and unsupported models, and documents conditions that stop collection. Its statistics do not take effect in Drop-in Gateway mode, cannot operate with Network Acceleration, and exclude usage from devices forwarded through specified tunnel interfaces. Update only after checking the model’s support page and preserving your current configuration.
Bridge mode is another common limitation. eero reports that live and historical usage are unavailable in bridge mode because another router is responsible for routing. If your mesh is bridged, inspect the upstream gateway instead.
Allow for collection and refresh intervals
After a device comes online, wait for the product’s reporting interval, refresh the screen, and check again. TP-Link’s documented 1–5 minute delay is a useful expectation, but another manufacturer may retain data less frequently or show only current rates. If a router offers no saved history, a blank historical chart is a product limitation rather than evidence of zero traffic.

Consider unsupported device statistics
Some smart-home cameras and other low-power products do not expose enough information for detailed statistics. TP-Link specifically notes that some smart cameras do not support in-depth statistics. The router may still count the device’s aggregate traffic even when it cannot break that traffic into apps or sessions.
Use the data to find a heavy consumer
- Rename every known device in the router’s client list.
- Choose one consistent period, such as the previous 24 hours or seven days.
- Sort or inspect devices by combined volume, then check upload and download separately for the leading candidates.
- For a suspected camera, disable cloud recording briefly or change its recording quality, then compare the next reporting interval. Make changes one at a time so the result is interpretable.
- Check the same device at different times. Scheduled backups, firmware updates, motion-triggered clips, and streaming create peaks that a short observation can miss.
Do not disconnect a safety-critical camera, alarm, medical monitor, or smart lock merely to test it. Prefer the manufacturer’s documented settings for recording quality, cloud retention, update scheduling, and diagnostic logging.
When a new router or monitoring system is justified
Replace or supplement the current system only when it lacks a view you genuinely need. Compare candidates on these specific capabilities:
Recommended Free Tools
| Capability | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Per-device selection | Can you open one client rather than only seeing a network total? | It identifies the camera, television, or hub responsible for usage. |
| Live rate and history | Does it provide current Mbps, saved MB/GB totals, or both? | Live troubleshooting and billing investigations require different measurements. |
| History window | How many days or months are retained, and is a subscription required? | A short window may not cover an ISP billing cycle. |
| Traffic scope | Does the report include only WAN traffic, or local device-to-device transfers too? | Scope determines whether the number represents internet usage or all LAN activity. |
| Operating conditions | Does monitoring work in bridge mode, with acceleration, VPNs, or tunnels? | A feature can disappear when the network is configured differently. |
| Attribution | Are app names based on domains or another approximate method? | Encryption and shared domains can make labels incomplete. |
One documented example is the GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000). GL.iNet lists it among models supporting Data Statistics, including per-device monitoring and 1-hour, 1-day, and 7-day trend views. The same documentation lists unsupported models and operating exclusions, so confirm the exact firmware and configuration before buying. Retail availability and pricing vary and are not established here.
Practical limitations and privacy considerations
A router can normally identify a client by its network identity, but it may not know which person is using it. Phones and some operating systems can use private or randomized MAC addresses, causing a device to appear as a new client after a reset or network change. Keep a note of the device’s current IP and MAC details when troubleshooting, and expect those identifiers to change if the device’s privacy settings permit it.
Usage totals are also not a substitute for the ISP’s meter. The router may count at a different point in the connection, use a different reset time, round values, or omit traffic handled by another gateway. If an overage dispute matters financially, compare the router’s period and scope with the ISP’s statement and retain screenshots of both.
A repeatable monthly check
- On the first day of the ISP billing cycle, export or record the router’s device list if the product supports that function.
- Confirm the router’s time zone and reset period.
- Review the top upload and download devices once a week.
- Investigate sudden changes by checking new cameras, cloud backups, firmware updates, streaming habits, and network topology.
- At the end of the cycle, compare the router’s WAN totals with the ISP’s figure, remembering that the two systems may have different scopes and rounding.
This routine turns a one-time mystery into a baseline. A device that is consistently high is a configuration candidate; a one-day spike may be a scheduled event or update.
