Use the tracker for the stage your H-1B application has reached: a cap registration is checked in your USCIS online account, a filed petition is checked with USCIS Case Status Online using its receipt number, and a visa application submitted at a U.S. embassy or consulate is checked through the Department of State’s CEAC status checker. The identifiers are different and cannot be substituted for one another.
That distinction answers the common question, “How do I check my H-1B case status?” Start by identifying which case or application you mean and locating the notice, confirmation, or application details for that stage. Then use the corresponding government service. A number that belongs to one step will not necessarily work in the tracker for another.
First, identify which H-1B status you need
“H-1B status” can refer to three separate steps in the process. Before entering a number, look at the notice or confirmation you have and identify whether it relates to a cap registration, a petition filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), or a visa application made at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

The registration confirmation number is not a petition receipt number. A consular visa application is also tracked in a different system from a USCIS petition. If you are unsure which number you have, match it to the document or online account where it appeared rather than trying it in every tracker.

These tools answer different questions. The USCIS account dashboard is where you check the registration and its notices. Case Status Online checks a petition or other immigration case USCIS has received. CEAC checks a nonimmigrant visa application made at a U.S. embassy or consulate. A petition may be relevant to a later visa application, but that does not make the petition receipt number the right identifier for CEAC.
It can help to sort your paperwork before opening a status page. Look for the document or account connected to the action you took: a registration confirmation, a USCIS receipt notice, or consular application details. The name and source of the identifier are more useful than its digits alone. Do not assume that any number associated with H-1B is interchangeable across systems.
How to check an H-1B cap registration
Check the USCIS account dashboard used to submit the registration. The dashboard displays registration status and related notices. The beneficiary confirmation number is associated with the registration, but USCIS says it cannot be used to track case status through Case Status Online.
- Sign in to the USCIS online account associated with the registration.
- Open the account dashboard and locate the H-1B registration and its notices.
- Review the displayed registration status. Do not enter the beneficiary confirmation number into Case Status Online as if it were a petition receipt number.
If you want account notifications, USCIS says users can enable email or text alerts in the account profile. Registration notices and notifications are associated with the account, not with a petition-status lookup using the confirmation number. See USCIS’s FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process guidance and its e-Request and case-processing information.
A registration confirmation number identifies the registration; it does not turn the registration into a filed petition for tracking purposes. USCIS’s FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process guidance states: “This number is only associated with the H-1B registration and cannot be used to track case status using Case Status Online.” In practical terms, if all you have is the beneficiary confirmation number, go to the registration account dashboard rather than the receipt-number lookup.
Registration status and petition status are therefore not alternate views of the same record. If a petition is later filed, it has its own USCIS receipt number and can be checked through Case Status Online. Do not expect the registration confirmation number to retrieve that petition, and do not treat a registration notification as a petition case-status result.
Account alerts can be useful when you want to be notified of account activity, but they do not change where status is checked. Enable email or text notifications through the account profile if desired, and still return to the dashboard to review the registration status and notices.
How to track a filed H-1B petition with USCIS
For a petition USCIS has received, use Case Status Online and the receipt number printed on the USCIS receipt notice. USCIS describes a receipt number as a unique 13-character identifier: three letters followed by 10 numbers.

- Find the receipt notice for the petition. Use the receipt number printed on that notice, not an H-1B registration confirmation number.
- Open USCIS Case Status Online and enter the receipt number without hyphens.
- Submit the number to view the case status shown by USCIS.
If the petition was filed online, or a paper case was linked to a USCIS online account, the receipt number may also be available in that account. If you cannot find a notice, check the account connected with the filing before trying another identifier. USCIS’s Case Status Online is for petitions and other immigration cases USCIS has received; it is not the registration-status dashboard.
When checking the receipt number, preserve all three letters and all 10 digits. The format is a useful way to recognize a USCIS receipt number, but the number should still be taken from the receipt notice or linked account rather than reconstructed from memory. Enter it without hyphens as USCIS directs. If you have a different H-1B-related number, such as a beneficiary confirmation number or a consular Application ID, do not substitute it.
Case Status Online provides the case status USCIS displays for the received case. It is distinct from the processing-time tool: one is an individual case lookup, while the other provides estimates for cases selected by form, category, and office. A processing-time estimate does not replace the case-specific status shown after you submit a receipt number.

If the receipt notice is not immediately at hand, an online filing account or an account to which the paper case was linked may also show the receipt number. That is a practical place to check before contacting anyone or using a different number. If neither the notice nor linked account supplies the number, do not attempt to use the registration confirmation number in its place.
How to track an H-1B visa application at a consulate
If you have applied for an H-1B visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate, use the Department of State’s CEAC nonimmigrant visa status checker. This lookup is separate from USCIS petition tracking.
- Open the CEAC nonimmigrant visa status checker.
- Select the location where you made the visa application.
- Enter the Application ID or Case Number, passport number, and the first five letters of the surname as requested.
- Submit the information to check the visa application status displayed by CEAC.
Use the application details requested by CEAC rather than the USCIS petition receipt number. The CEAC checker is an official Department of State service for a consular visa application; Case Status Online is the USCIS service for a petition or other USCIS case.
The location selection matters because CEAC asks you to choose where the application was made. Have the application identifier and the requested passport and surname details available before starting the lookup. Enter only the information requested on the official Department of State page. CEAC does not use the USCIS receipt number as the replacement for its Application ID or Case Number.
So, if your question is “Can I track my H-1B visa application with my receipt number?” the answer depends on what you mean by visa application. A USCIS petition is checked with its receipt number through Case Status Online. A nonimmigrant visa application made at a consulate is checked through CEAC using the application location and the identifying details that CEAC requests. These are separate status checks even when both relate to the same H-1B process.

What to do if a number does not work
A failed lookup often means the number or system does not match the stage being tracked. Check the document or account that supplied the number, then use the corresponding service.
- You have a beneficiary confirmation number: Check the USCIS account dashboard for registration status. The confirmation number is not a Case Status Online receipt number.
- You have a USCIS receipt number: Confirm that it is the 13-character number from the receipt notice and enter it without hyphens in Case Status Online.
- You have a consular visa application: Use CEAC and enter the application location and the requested Application ID or Case Number and identity details.
- You filed online or linked a paper case: Look in the associated USCIS account for the receipt number and notices.
Keep case identifiers and passport details private. Enter them only in the official government service for the stage you are checking, and avoid sharing screenshots or messages that reveal those details.
A useful troubleshooting sequence is to ask three questions in order. First, what action generated the number: a registration, a petition filing, or a consular application? Second, which official account or notice supplied it? Third, does the selected tracker ask for that kind of identifier? This avoids repeatedly submitting the same number to unrelated systems.

If the system is correct but the lookup still does not match your information, recheck the characters against the source document, including the letters, digits, and any requested personal details. For Case Status Online, omit hyphens from the receipt number. For CEAC, select the location where the application was made and provide the Application ID or Case Number, passport number, and first five surname letters as prompted. For registration, return to the USCIS account dashboard.
Do not post a receipt number, confirmation number, passport number, or identifying screenshot publicly to get help. These identifiers and passport details are private information. Use them only on the relevant official government portal and keep notices securely available for your own reference.
How to use USCIS processing-time estimates
A case-status lookup tells you what USCIS currently shows for an individual case. Processing-time estimates answer a different question: how long USCIS says cases in a selected form, category, and office may take. USCIS directs users to choose those details using information from the receipt notice in its Case Processing Times tool.
An estimate is not a case-specific promise, decision, or guaranteed date. USCIS says its processing-time metrics and office listings are being adjusted, and its processing-times FAQ notes that estimates may change. Check the live tool rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere or assuming a current estimate applies to every H-1B petition.
To use the estimate, start with the information on the receipt notice and choose the matching form, category, and office in the live tool. The office and category matter; a broad search for “H-1B processing time” is not a substitute for selecting the case information USCIS requests. If the tool changes its metrics or office listings, a figure remembered from an earlier check may no longer reflect the current estimate.

Keep the two tools separate in your expectations. Case Status Online shows the status USCIS displays for the individual receipt number. The processing-time tool gives an estimate for the selected form, category, and office. It does not guarantee when a particular petition will be decided, and a status lookup is not itself a processing-time estimate.
When to make an inquiry
If your case appears to be outside normal processing, use the processing-time tool to find the inquiry date or determine whether an inquiry link is available. USCIS provides an e-Request option for checking case processing. Follow the date and eligibility information shown for your case; an estimate alone does not establish that an inquiry can be submitted.
In other words, do not treat an estimate as permission to submit an inquiry at any time. Check the inquiry date or link provided for the selected case details, then follow the eligibility information displayed by USCIS. If the tool does not show that an inquiry is available, the existence of an estimate alone does not establish an inquiry option.

Registration, petition, and consular visa tracking are distinct steps with separate identifiers. A registration confirmation number belongs with the USCIS account dashboard; a petition receipt number belongs with USCIS Case Status Online; and a consular Application ID or Case Number belongs with CEAC along with the requested identity details. Choosing the right system first is the simplest way to avoid an unhelpful lookup.
For a quick comparison, use the stage as your decision point:
- Registration: Sign in to the USCIS account used to submit it. Review the dashboard and registration notices, and use the beneficiary confirmation number only in connection with that registration.
- Petition received by USCIS: Find the receipt notice or linked account, then use the 13-character receipt number in Case Status Online without hyphens.
- Visa application at an embassy or consulate: Open the CEAC nonimmigrant checker, select the application location, and provide the Application ID or Case Number and the requested passport and surname details.
These are not competing websites for the same lookup. Each official service corresponds to a particular stage and asks for information associated with that stage. If you keep the notice or account that generated the identifier in view, it is easier to choose the right portal and avoid confusing registration, petition, and visa status.
