To check another business’s GST registration and available return-filing record, use the GST Portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer tool. To check your own return status, sign in and open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. These are separate checks: a public filing table or portal rating does not certify that a business meets every tax, legal, or commercial obligation.
Choose the right GST status check

The GST Portal’s labels and available fields may change. If a label differs, follow the live portal’s current instructions.
How do I check if a GST number is active?
- Open the official GST Portal Search Taxpayer guide and go to the portal’s pre-login Search Taxpayer feature.
- Enter the GSTIN or UIN and the displayed captcha, then select Search. GSTN’s Welcome Kit also describes searching by PAN.
- Review the returned details, including the GSTIN/UIN, legal and trade names, effective registration date, business constitution, principal place of business, and cancellation date if shown.
Use the registration status displayed in the portal record to determine whether the GSTIN appears active or cancelled. The lookup verifies the portal’s displayed record; it is not an independent certification of a business’s overall compliance or trustworthiness.
How can I check GST return filing status by GSTIN?
- Use Search Taxpayer and look up the GSTIN as described above.
- Select Show Filing Table.
- Choose a financial year and search to view the available return-filing details for that taxpayer.
The Search Taxpayer manual says the filing table can include monthly or quarterly frequency where that feature applies. A visible entry tells you what the portal lists for the selected periods; it does not establish that every required return, payment, or other obligation is satisfied.

How do I check my GST return status online?
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
- Select the financial year and filing period, then search.
- Find the relevant return tile and check its status. The official GSTR-3B guide says a return displays Filed after successful filing and provides an option to view or download the filed return.
Viewing GSTR-2B
Eligible normal, SEZ, and casual taxpayers can view or download a generated period’s GSTR-2B from Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard > File Returns, using the GSTR-2B tile. This route and availability apply to those taxpayer types and generated periods; the tile may not appear for every account. See the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQs.
Registration application status is not GSTIN status
If you have submitted a registration application but do not yet have an issued GSTIN, track the application through Services > Registration > Track Application Status. The GST Portal’s registration guide describes this route, and GSTN says an Application Reference Number is sent after successful submission. Application tracking reports progress on that application; use Search Taxpayer to check an existing GSTIN’s displayed registration record.

What a GST compliance check can—and cannot—tell you
Public lookup and filing table
The pre-login search provides portal-record identity, registration, and available return-filing details. GSTN describes taxpayer lookup as a way to verify GSTIN authenticity. Treat the result as a check of the displayed record, not proof that the taxpayer has met every tax, legal, or commercial requirement.

Additional information and compliance rating
The Search Taxpayer manual describes some further profile information as available after login, including proprietor, director, or promoter names; e-way bill history; annual aggregate turnover; and the percentage of tax paid in cash. It also describes a portal compliance rating on a 0-to-10 scale, with factors including timely filing, tax payment, and penalties. That rating is an indicator based on the portal’s stated factors, not a guarantee of supplier quality or low risk.

If login fails
GSTN’s Known Issues & Suggested Solutions guide recommends checking the taxpayer’s status first with the pre-login Search Taxpayer bar. If the lookup shows active or cancelled status but you still cannot access the account, the guide says to raise a ticket. If it shows inactive status, it directs users to contact the jurisdictional officer.
