Open the order or trip’s invoice, tax invoice, receipt, or ticket and check five things: the supplier’s legal name and GSTIN, document date and serial number, service description, taxable value, and the GST rate and amount. Then match the service description to the CBIC rate entry that applied on the transaction date. Food orders and rides do not automatically share one GST rate, and a platform’s responsibility to pay GST does not make every app fee GST.
If the app shows only a combined “taxes” amount or omits the taxable base and rate, request the tax invoice or an itemized tax breakup from the platform or supplier. Keep the original document, order or trip date, location, and line items when you ask for clarification.
What you are checking on the bill
GST is checked against the actual supply documented on the transaction, not against the app’s final total alone. A useful review separates three questions:

- Who supplied it? Read the legal supplier name and GSTIN printed on the document; do not identify the supplier only from the consumer-facing app name.
- How was tax calculated? Check the taxable value, applicable rate, and tax amount shown for that supply.
CBIC’s invoice rules describe the particulars a tax invoice should contain. For passenger transportation, the invoice may take the form of a ticket in any form, provided the other applicable particulars are included. The document therefore may be labelled a receipt, ticket, invoice, or tax invoice; its contents matter more than the heading.

Step-by-step: check a food or ride transaction
1. Open the transaction document
- Open the app’s order history or trip history.
- Select the completed food order or ride you want to verify.
- Choose the available receipt, invoice, tax invoice, or ticket option and save the document as a PDF or screenshot.
Menu names differ by platform and can change. Use the document attached to the specific order or trip rather than relying on a generic help-page example. If there is no invoice or ticket option, ask the platform where the tax document is provided.
2. Identify the supplier and invoice details
Check the document for the supplier’s legal name, GSTIN, invoice or ticket date, serial number where applicable, and a description of the service. Compare the displayed supplier with the restaurant, transport operator, or platform named in the document. If the receipt names a driver or operator, do not assume that the app brand is the legal supplier; use the printed particulars.
3. Find the taxable value, rate, and tax amount
Look for a taxable-value column or line, the GST rate, and the corresponding tax amount. Some documents show central and state components separately; others may present a combined GST figure. Record the amount exactly as displayed and check whether the tax amount relates to the taxable base rather than to the full amount that includes non-taxable or separately classified lines.

The invoice rules establish the information to check, but they cannot confirm that a particular amount is correct without the transaction date, place, service classification, supplier, and complete line-item breakdown.
4. Match the service to the correct GST category
Use the wording on the invoice to decide whether the supply is restaurant service, passenger transport, or another service. The CBIC rate schedule contains separate entries and conditions for these categories. A food order and a ride may therefore have different treatment, and two rides may differ if the vehicle or service category differs.
5. Check the transaction date and location
GST rules and notifications can change. Keep the order or trip date and the supply location with the document, and use the rate entry and liability rule in force for that transaction. A current rate page cannot by itself settle an older or differently classified transaction.
6. Request a breakup when the display is unclear
If the bill says only “taxes,” “GST,” or a similar broad label without identifying the taxable value and rate, contact the platform or supplier. Ask for the tax invoice or an itemized breakup for that exact order or trip, including the supplier GSTIN, service description, taxable value, rate, and tax amount. Include the transaction ID, date, amount, and a copy of the receipt so the support team can locate the record.

Food delivery bills: reading the restaurant-service line
Separate restaurant service from other charges
Start with the line that describes the food or restaurant service. Then identify separate delivery, packaging, convenience, platform, or other charges exactly as they appear. The fact that a charge appears on the same checkout page does not, by itself, prove that it has the same GST treatment as the restaurant service.

CBIC’s GST rates schedule includes a 5% entry for the described general restaurant-service category, subject to the conditions stated in that entry. Treat that as a category-and-condition rule, not as an unconditional rate for every food item, every premises type, or every fee on a delivery order.
Use the invoice’s classification, not the menu label
“Food,” “delivery,” and “platform fee” are consumer-facing descriptions. The tax analysis follows the legal supply and the conditions attached to the applicable rate entry. If the document does not make the classification clear, ask the supplier or platform to state which supply each taxable line represents.
Check whether the amount is a tax or merely part of the price
A line called “total,” “fee,” or “charges” is not automatically GST. GST should be identified by a rate and tax amount, or by an invoice that clearly states the tax components. Do not add GST again to a line that is already included in the documented taxable calculation.
Ride-hailing bills: reading a ticket or tax invoice
A ticket can be the transport tax document
CBIC’s invoice rules allow a passenger-transport tax invoice to include a ticket in any form, by whatever name called, along with the other applicable particulars. A trip receipt can therefore function as the transport document when it contains the required information. Check the supplier identity, date, service description, taxable value, and tax details rather than rejecting it solely because it is called a ticket or receipt.
Passenger-transport categories are not identical
The CBIC schedule contains multiple passenger-transport entries with different rates and conditions. It lists radio taxi in a passenger-transport entry at 5%, subject to the condition stated in the schedule. That entry is not a blanket statement about every vehicle, ride type, fare component, or app service. Use the actual service description and the rate entry applicable on the trip date.
What a customer does not have to file
CBIC’s sectoral FAQ states: “Customers availing services from taxi aggregators do not have to make any declaration or file any return. They are outside GST.” A consumer using a taxi aggregator does not file a GST return merely because GST appears on the trip document.
The same FAQ says a taxi aggregator may issue a ticket or tax invoice within one month of the service and says consolidated invoices cannot be issued under that guidance. The located FAQ text does not clearly show a revision date, so check for later amendments if the timing or invoicing procedure is material to a dispute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the app operator may be liable for GST
Section 9(5) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act allows the government to specify services for which the electronic commerce operator is treated as the person liable to pay GST. CBIC Notification No. 17/2017-Central Tax (Rate), dated 28 June 2017, identifies specified passenger transport supplied through an electronic commerce operator, including radio taxi, motorcab, maxicab, and motorcycle, for operator-level payment on intra-State supplies.

This liability mechanism answers who pays the tax to the government for a covered supply. It does not, on its own, prove that the amount displayed on a particular receipt is calculated correctly, identify the taxable base, or make every app charge GST. Those questions still require the invoice, service classification, transaction date, location, and line items.
Read common bill labels carefully
App receipts often combine commercial labels with tax labels. “Fare,” “delivery charge,” “handling,” “convenience fee,” “packaging,” “discount,” and “total” describe prices or adjustments; they are not, by themselves, GST particulars. A line explicitly labelled GST, CGST, SGST, or IGST should be tied to a taxable value and rate. If the document shows central and state components separately, check that their combined amount is the GST total shown for that taxable line. If it shows one combined amount, ask which rate and base were used.
Discounts and credits also matter when comparing documents. Preserve the receipt exactly as issued instead of recalculating from a rounded grand total. A support team can then explain whether the displayed tax was calculated before or after a documented adjustment. Do not assume that a promotional discount, wallet credit, toll, or pass-through amount has the same treatment as the core restaurant or transport service.
When the GSTIN or supplier name is missing
An absent GSTIN does not let you identify the supplier by guessing from the brand, driver name, or restaurant logo. First check whether the downloadable tax invoice is separate from the payment receipt. If the invoice still omits the legal supplier details, ask the platform to identify the entity that made each supply and to provide the applicable tax document. Keep the request limited to the specific order or trip, because a platform may use different entities for restaurant, transport, and platform services.
For a ride, note whether the document identifies the driver, fleet operator, or aggregator. That name is evidence to review, not proof by itself of who bears GST liability. The section 9(5) rule can place payment responsibility on an operator for specified intra-State services, while the invoice still needs to describe the actual supply and amounts.
Compare two bills without mixing categories
When checking an order against a ride, or comparing two receipts, use the same set of questions for each document:
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Service type | Is the line restaurant service, passenger transport, or a separate platform service? |
| Supplier and document | Which legal name and GSTIN appear? Is the transport document a ticket or an invoice? |
| Tax base and rate | What taxable value is shown, which rate entry applies, and what tax amount is stated? |
| Liability mechanism | Is this a notified electronic-commerce service for which the operator may pay GST under section 9(5)? |
| Transaction facts | What are the order or trip date, location, vehicle or service type, and complete line items? |
Do not compare only the final totals. A larger total can reflect a different fare, delivery charge, discount, toll, fee, or service category rather than a different GST rate.
What to do when the GST amount looks wrong
First, preserve the evidence
- Save the original PDF, email, or in-app document.
- Record the order or trip ID, transaction date, pickup and delivery or trip location, and payment reference.
- Capture every line, including discounts, fees, and adjustments.
- Note the supplier legal name and GSTIN exactly as printed.
Then ask a precise question
Support requests are more useful when they identify the missing calculation. Ask: “Please provide the tax invoice or itemized GST breakup for transaction [order or trip ID], showing the supplier GSTIN, service description, taxable value, applicable GST rate, and tax amount for each taxable line.” Keep the transaction identifier in code formatting when copying it into a support form, for example ORD-12345; replace it with your real identifier.

Escalate unresolved discrepancies
If the response does not explain the taxable base or supplier, ask the named supplier for the invoice as well as the platform. For a consequential dispute, check the CBIC material and notifications in force on the transaction date and seek qualified tax advice. General GST rules cannot adjudicate a specific amount without the underlying invoice and facts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every app charge is GST: A platform fee, delivery amount, packaging amount, fare, or other charge needs its own documented treatment.
- Applying one rate to every food order: Restaurant-service entries carry conditions, and separate lines may represent different supplies.
- Applying one rate to every ride: Passenger-transport entries vary by service and vehicle category.
- Treating section 9(5) as a rate: It concerns the person liable to pay GST, not proof that the receipt’s amount or every fee is taxable.
- Rejecting a ticket automatically: For passenger transport, a ticket can be the tax document when the applicable particulars are present.
- Checking only the grand total: Verify the taxable base, rate, and tax amount line by line.
- Using an old receipt to judge a new charge: Compare the transaction date with the rule and rate entry in force at that time.
- Filing a GST return as a passenger: CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says taxi-aggregator customers do not make a GST declaration or file a return merely for using the service.
Quick decision checklist
- Do I have the order or trip invoice, receipt, or ticket?
- Does it show the legal supplier and GSTIN?
- Is the date and invoice or ticket identifier present?
- Is the service described clearly enough to classify?
- Can I see the taxable value, GST rate, and tax amount?
- Have I separated restaurant, transport, and platform-service lines?
- Have I checked the CBIC category and conditions for the transaction date?
- If a figure remains unclear, have I requested an itemized tax invoice from the platform or supplier?
Frequently asked questions
How do I check GST charged on a food-delivery bill?
Open the order’s invoice or receipt, identify the legal supplier and GSTIN, and locate the restaurant-service line. Check the taxable value, stated rate, and tax amount, then compare the service description and transaction date with the applicable CBIC entry. Review delivery, packaging, convenience, and platform lines separately rather than assuming they all use the restaurant-service treatment.
Is a food-delivery receipt enough, or do I need a tax invoice?
The heading is not decisive. A receipt may contain useful particulars, but if it does not identify the supplier, GSTIN, taxable value, rate, and tax amount, request the tax invoice or an itemized breakup for the order. Keep the original receipt because it links the request to the transaction.

Why does my app show “taxes” without a GST breakup?
A combined label does not tell you which service was taxed or what base and rate were used. Ask the platform or supplier for the tax invoice showing the supplier GSTIN, service description, taxable value, rate, and tax amount for each taxable line. Include the order or trip ID, date, amount, and a copy of the document.
Does a cab receipt count as a GST invoice?
For passenger transportation, CBIC’s invoice rules allow the tax invoice to include a ticket in any form, by whatever name called, when the other applicable particulars are present. Check the legal supplier, date, service description, taxable value, rate, and tax amount before deciding that the document is inadequate.
What GST rate applies to a ride-hailing trip?
There is no single rate for every ride. The CBIC schedule has several passenger-transport entries and conditions; it lists radio taxi at 5% subject to the stated condition. Use the vehicle or service description and the rate entry in force on the trip date instead of applying 5% automatically to every fare or fee.
Does section 9(5) mean every app fee is GST?
No. Section 9(5) concerns who is liable to pay GST for specified services supplied through an electronic commerce operator. Notification No. 17/2017-Central Tax (Rate), dated 28 June 2017, covers specified passenger transport such as radio taxi, motorcab, maxicab, and motorcycle for operator-level payment on intra-State supplies. The receipt still must be checked line by line.

Do passengers have to file a GST return for using a taxi aggregator?
CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says customers using taxi aggregators do not have to make a declaration or file a return and are outside GST for that purpose. A GST amount on a trip document does not turn the passenger into a registered taxpayer.

How long can a taxi aggregator take to issue the document?
The CBIC FAQ says a taxi aggregator may issue a ticket or tax invoice within one month of the service and says consolidated invoices cannot be issued under that guidance. Because the located FAQ text does not clearly display a revision date, check for later amendments when timing is important to a dispute.
What if the platform refuses to explain the tax?
Send a written request to both the platform and the legal supplier named on the document. Attach the receipt and provide the transaction ID, date, location, service type, and exact missing fields. If the amount remains consequential or disputed, review CBIC material in force on the transaction date and obtain qualified tax advice; a general rule cannot determine a specific charge without the underlying invoice and facts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check GST charged on a food-delivery bill?
Open the order’s invoice or receipt, identify the legal supplier and GSTIN, and check the taxable value, stated rate, and tax amount for each service line. Compare the restaurant-service description and transaction date with the applicable CBIC entry, and review delivery or platform charges separately.
Does a cab receipt count as a GST invoice?
A passenger-transport ticket can serve as the tax document when it contains the applicable supplier, date, service, taxable value, rate, and tax particulars. Do not reject it solely because it is labelled a ticket or receipt.
Do taxi passengers file GST returns?
No. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says customers using taxi aggregators do not make a declaration or file a GST return merely for using the service.
What should I do if the app shows only “taxes”?
Request the tax invoice or itemized breakup for that exact order or trip, showing the supplier GSTIN, service description, taxable value, GST rate, and tax amount. Include the transaction ID, date, amount, and receipt.
The Bottom Line
Verify the document, supplier, service classification, taxable value, GST rate, and tax amount together. Food orders and rides can fall under different entries and conditions, while section 9(5) addresses liability for specified app-based services rather than proving that every fee is GST. When a receipt is unclear, preserve it and request an itemized tax invoice from the platform or supplier.
