To check whether a full-cover GPU water block fits, match the block maker’s current compatibility listing to your graphics card’s complete model and revision—not just its GPU chip family. The card’s PCB layout and revision matter: two cards based on the same GPU can use different board designs.

Record the exact card identifiers, check the block manufacturer’s configurator or compatibility list, and verify any PCB, revision, approval, and backplate notes. If your exact card is missing or the result is uncertain, ask the manufacturer before ordering rather than treating a similar model as proof of fit.

Why the exact graphics-card model matters

A GPU name identifies the chip family, not necessarily the design of the complete graphics card. Board partners can sell different cards built around the same GPU, and a full-cover block has to match the card’s board layout and mounting arrangement. A match for one card in a GPU family therefore does not establish compatibility with every card using that chip. EK’s configurator asks for the card maker and video-card model as well as the GPU series, while Alphacool’s guidance likewise directs users to select the exact GPU model. EK’s compatibility configurator · Alphacool’s GPU-compatibility FAQ

That distinction applies even when a product is described as a reference design. A reference label alone is not a universal fit guarantee. EK cautions that hardware revisions make it difficult to give specific guarantees, and Alphacool notes that GPU manufacturers can change PCB designs or components. Verify your particular card against the block maker’s current information instead of inferring compatibility from a GPU-generation label or a resemblance to another card. • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What to identify on your card before searching

Before opening a compatibility tool, collect the identifiers that distinguish your physical card from other models. Use the full manufacturer product name, not a shorthand such as “RTX 5090.” Check the card label and packaging, and use the manufacturer’s product page to confirm the model details. Keep the information together so you can compare it directly with the block listing or include it in a support request.

  • Card manufacturer or board partner: the company that made the complete graphics card, which may differ from the GPU-chip maker.
  • Complete model name: include suffixes, edition names, or other model wording shown on the card or product page. Do not treat a neighboring model in the same series as interchangeable.
  • Product or part number: copy the identifier exactly where it is available. A product family name by itself may not distinguish variants.
  • Revision identifier: record any revision marking printed on the card or its packaging. If you cannot find one, do not invent one; preserve the card’s other exact identifiers for the compatibility check.

Take a photo of the label or note the identifiers verbatim. Small differences in suffixes or revision details can be meaningful when a manufacturer lists individual card models and PCB numbers. Alphacool’s NVIDIA list, for example, separates specific card names and PCB numbers rather than treating an entire GPU family as one entry. See the list’s model and PCB entries.

How to check a block manufacturer’s configurator or list

Use the manufacturer of the water block as your primary compatibility source. Menu labels and fields vary, but the check should narrow from the GPU to the graphics-card maker and then to the exact card wherever the tool offers those choices. A configurator result is useful only when it identifies a block for your actual model; selecting the right GPU series is not enough on its own.

  1. Open the block maker’s current compatibility resource. Start with the configurator or model list on the manufacturer’s own site, rather than a search result for a similarly named card. EK’s configurator uses brand, GPU series, and video card. Open EK’s liquid-cooling compatibility list.
  2. Choose the GPU chip or family. Select the chip maker and GPU family or series requested by the tool. Treat this as the first filter, not the final answer.
  3. Select the graphics-card manufacturer. Choose the company that made your complete card, not simply the company that made the GPU chip.
  4. Select the exact card model. Compare the configurator’s model name with the full name and product number you recorded. Alphacool describes a flow that moves through chip, series, card manufacturer, and exact GPU; if its tool displays no cooler for a selected model, its FAQ says it currently does not offer a compatible cooler for that model. Read Alphacool’s compatibility FAQ.
  5. Open the actual block result and read its notes. Confirm which block is listed for the card, then inspect any model variants, PCB identifiers, revision limitations, approval labels, or other qualifications. Do not stop at a product-family heading or assume every block shown for that GPU fits every card.
  6. Check the resource’s date or current status where available. Compatibility entries and product availability can change, so use the current manufacturer listing close to purchase rather than relying on an old post or saved search result. Alphacool’s list warns that card makers may alter PCBs or components.

Some resources present their results differently. EK’s tool is a sequence of model selections; Alphacool’s list includes individual card models, PCB numbers, and approval information. Use the fields the manufacturer actually provides, and do not assume a result at one level of detail confirms details that the page does not state. EK configurator · Alphacool NVIDIA list

How to read a listing, PCB number, or approval note

Exact model and PCB identification

A listing that names your card model is stronger evidence than a result that names only its GPU family. If the manufacturer also lists a PCB number or layout, compare it with the information for your physical card. Do not assume that a PCB number for a similar model applies to yours. The Alphacool list shows why this extra check matters: it organizes entries by individual card names and PCB information, and cautions that GPU makers may modify boards or use different components. Alphacool NVIDIA GPU compatibility list

Visual approval is not the same as physical confirmation

Alphacool’s compatibility list uses both visual and physical approval labels, and flags cases where photos do not let it determine fit with certainty. Treat a visual or tentative match as a reason to investigate, not as a guarantee. If the entry does not clearly establish that your exact PCB and revision are approved, contact the manufacturer with your card details before buying. A photo-based assessment can help identify a likely layout, but it does not erase an explicit uncertainty note. Review Alphacool’s approval information

Reference-design wording and revision caveats

Do not read “reference” as permission to skip the exact-model check. EK says hardware revisions limit how specifically it can guarantee compatibility, while Alphacool warns that manufacturers can change PCBs or components. If a listing says that a result applies only to a stated revision, use that limit as part of the match: a card with an unknown or different revision is not confirmed by the listing. Ask the block maker if the card’s marking or the scope of the entry is unclear. EK configurator guidance · Alphacool compatibility list

What to do when your exact card is missing or ambiguous

An absent entry does not prove that no block could ever fit; it means the available listing has not established a compatible block for your exact card. Do not substitute a visually similar model, another board partner’s version, or a reference-design assumption for manufacturer confirmation. The right next step is an inquiry to the block maker.

  1. Find the manufacturer’s compatibility inquiry route. EK directs owners of unlisted hardware to submit a compatibility inquiry. Open EK’s compatibility inquiry instructions.
  2. Provide the full card identity. Include the card manufacturer, complete product name, product or part number, and any revision identifier you found. Add a clear link to the card manufacturer’s product page; EK specifically asks for that link. EK inquiry instructions.
  3. Attach clear, large photos. EK recommends a clear, large image and says that a bare-PCB or ground-plan image, where possible, makes layout evaluation easier. If your card is still assembled, say so rather than implying that a photo shows the bare board. EK help page.
  4. Ask about the exact block and revision. Request confirmation for your exact card model and revision, and ask which PCB or approval information the response applies to. A general statement about the GPU family may not resolve a model-level mismatch.
  5. Wait for a specific answer before ordering. If the response does not identify your model or clarify the uncertain note, follow up with the missing detail. Keep the written confirmation with your purchase information.

This is especially important when a list says that photos are insufficient for certainty, when your PCB number is missing, or when the card’s revision is unknown. Do not interpret the lack of a clearly negative statement as approval.

Check the backplate and other parts as a matched set

Confirm what the exact water-block package includes and whether its matching backplate is part of the package or sold separately. Compatibility of the block body does not automatically establish compatibility of a backplate from another maker or from a different block. Alphacool says compatibility with another manufacturer’s backplate is not guaranteed and recommends using the backplate supplied with its cooler. Check the product details for the particular block you intend to buy, not just a general product-family page. Alphacool GPU water-block FAQ

When comparing two blocks that are both listed for your exact card, verify the accompanying parts separately. The useful questions are whether each listing identifies the same exact card or PCB, whether its approval is physical or visual, whether it limits compatibility by revision, and whether the intended backplate is included. If any of those details are not stated, ask the seller or manufacturer instead of treating silence as confirmation.

How to compare blocks when more than one is listed

If several blocks are listed for your card, compare only information relevant to fit and the package you plan to buy. The compatibility sources do not establish an independent performance ranking, temperature advantage, or price comparison. Do not use a compatibility entry to infer that one block cools better, and do not assume that all blocks listed for the GPU family fit your exact card.

What to compare What to confirm How to handle uncertainty
Exact-card and PCB match Does the manufacturer identify your full card model and, where available, its PCB number or layout? Ask the block maker if the entry names only the GPU family or a different card variant.
Approval confidence Does the listing state physical approval, visual approval, or another qualification? Do not treat a visual or explicitly uncertain result as final confirmation.
Revision scope Does the listing limit approval to a specific card or PCB revision? Confirm the marking on your card or request a model-specific answer.
Backplate and included parts Is the appropriate backplate included, and does the manufacturer identify it as compatible with this block? Do not assume that a backplate from another manufacturer will fit.
Current listing and stock Is the compatibility entry current, and is the exact block currently available from the seller? Recheck the manufacturer’s current information and seller listing shortly before ordering; compatibility and availability can change.

Common compatibility-check mistakes

  • Searching only by GPU name. This returns family-level results that may cover multiple PCB designs. Narrow the search to the full card model and verify the manufacturer listing.
  • Assuming a close model name means the same PCB. Suffixes and revisions can distinguish cards. Compare the precise model and PCB information rather than relying on a neighboring entry.
  • Reading a visual match as a guarantee. A photo-based or tentative approval is not equivalent to physical confirmation when the list itself flags uncertainty.
  • Assuming reference design means universal compatibility. Manufacturer revisions and component changes can alter a board. Use the block maker’s exact-card listing or get written confirmation.
  • Checking the block but not its backplate. Verify the supplied parts together; another manufacturer’s backplate is not guaranteed to fit.
  • Relying on an old listing or forum post. Use the block maker’s current configurator or list and recheck shortly before purchase. A community discussion can help frame a question, but it is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s compatibility confirmation.
  • Ordering while the answer is still ambiguous. If your card is unlisted, your revision is unclear, or the list says the photos are inconclusive, contact the manufacturer first.
