Connecting an AI service through Google’s authorization screen does not, by itself, mean your Gmail account was hacked. It means the service received the specific Google permissions you approved. To check for misuse, review two separate things: Google Account security events and devices, then Gmail’s own access records and settings. Finally, remove anything you do not recognize and secure the account if the evidence points to unauthorized access.

The most useful checks are the app’s exact permissions, recent sign-ins, Gmail’s Last account activity panel, forwarding and delegation rules, filters, POP/IMAP access, missing messages, and mail in Sent that you did not write.

What an AI connection can and cannot tell you

When you choose Sign in with Google or approve an OAuth consent screen, an app can request access to particular Google products and actions. Gmail access might allow an app to read messages, compose or send mail, manage labels, or perform other actions, depending on the scopes shown during authorization. Other AI connections may request only a profile, Drive files, or another Google service. Do not assume that every AI tool can read or change your entire mailbox.

The authorization screen is therefore the first boundary to check. Google’s linked-app controls show which service is connected and which categories of Google data it can access. Removing an authorization prevents that linked access going forward. It does not prove what the provider previously received, whether it retained copies, or whether it deleted data already transferred. Those questions require the provider’s current privacy policy and product documentation.

A granted permission is also different from an unknown sign-in. An app may legitimately appear in Gmail access records while no person has broken into the account. Conversely, an attacker could sign in through a browser or device without the AI app being involved. Treat the app review, account-security review, and Gmail activity review as separate investigations.

Use this review order

Review What it shows What to compare Important limitation
Google Account security events Alerts and recent security changes Event, time, device, and location against your own activity An alert is evidence to investigate, not automatically proof of compromise
Google Account devices Devices currently or recently signed in Device type, last use, and whether you own it Old or shared devices can remain listed until removed
Linked apps and services Apps authorized to access Google data App identity, requested products, and scopes Removal stops future linked access but does not establish what data was retained
Gmail Last account activity Recent Gmail access types, times, IP addresses, and approximate locations Access type, timestamp, client, and whether the app or mail program is yours IP geography can be misleading; legitimate apps and POP/IMAP can appear
Gmail settings and messages Forwarding, delegation, filters, POP/IMAP, labels, and mail changes Rules and messages you did not create Some settings are legitimate account-management choices, so confirm before deleting

1. Check Google Account security events and devices

Start outside Gmail in your Google Account security area. Open the account menu, choose Manage your Google Account, and select Security. Review both Recent security activity (or similarly labeled security events) and Your devices.

Review each recent event

  1. Open every event that falls after you connected the AI tool or that you do not immediately recognize.
  2. Compare the event’s date and time with when you signed in, authorized the app, changed a password, or used a new browser.
  3. Check the device and approximate location. A familiar phone, computer, or browser used at the right time is usually consistent with your own action.
  4. If an event is unfamiliar, use the security-alert option to indicate that it was not you and follow Google’s secure-account flow.

Google’s account-help guidance treats unusual security events, devices, and account changes as separate signals. A new device entry can be legitimate if you recently set up a phone, reinstalled a browser, or used a work computer. Remove a device only after confirming it is not yours or is no longer under your control.

Inspect devices, not just alerts

In Your devices, open the details for each phone, tablet, computer, or other session. Look at the last activity time and sign out of any device you cannot identify. If you share a computer, remember that the hardware may be familiar while the listed session belongs to another browser profile or account. A device you recognize but did not use at the displayed time deserves the same investigation as an unfamiliar device.

2. Review the AI tool’s exact Google permissions

In the Google Account Security page, find the area for Third-party apps and services, Connections to your third-party apps, or linked apps. Open the AI service’s entry rather than relying on its name alone. Read the products and scopes Google lists, especially any Gmail permissions.

Questions to answer for the connected app

  • Is the publisher and app name exactly the service you intended to connect?
  • Does it request Gmail, or only another Google product?
  • Does the permission describe viewing mail, composing or sending mail, managing mail, or a broader account scope?
  • Was the connection created at the time you remember approving it?
  • Is the connection still needed for a feature you use?

If the app is unfamiliar, the name is deceptive, or the permissions exceed the feature you needed, choose Remove access (the label may appear as Disconnect). Removing it blocks that authorization from being used for new requests. It does not automatically erase data the provider may have already copied. Contact the provider or consult its current privacy and deletion terms if retained data is a concern.

If you intentionally connected the service but no longer use it, removing the connection is still sensible. You can authorize it again later when needed, after checking the scopes shown on the new consent screen.

How to interpret the panel

  • Access type: identifies a browser session, mobile device, third-party application, POP, IMAP, or another mail client category.
  • Date and time: lets you compare access with your own sign-in, the AI authorization, or a mail program’s scheduled checks.
  • IP address: provides a network identifier that can help distinguish sessions.
  • Approximate location: gives a geographic estimate associated with the network, not a precise physical address.

Write down or capture the suspicious row before signing out sessions or changing settings. Compare the entire record, not just the map location. A legitimate authorized application can have an IP address in the list. POP or IMAP clients, mail-fetching services, mobile carriers, corporate networks, and VPN-like routing can also produce an IP or location that looks distant from you. Google’s Gmail help specifically warns that location alone is not proof that another person accessed the account.

Compare records by context

Record pattern Often consistent with Investigate further when
Third-party application at the time you approved the AI service The connected app using its granted token The app name is unknown or the permission was never approved
POP or IMAP access on a regular schedule Your desktop mail client, phone mail app, or mail-fetching setup You do not use any client with POP/IMAP enabled
Mobile access from a carrier network Your phone changing network addresses The device and time do not match your phone use
Browser access from an unfamiliar device and time Possibly a shared or old session You cannot identify the device or activity after checking your devices list

4. Audit Gmail settings for changes you did not make

In Gmail, select the gear icon, choose See all settings, and inspect the following areas. Check each item even if the access log looks normal; an account can be altered through a valid session.

Delegation

On Accounts and Import, find Grant access to your account. Delegates can read, send, and delete mail according to Gmail’s delegation rules. Remove every delegate you did not add. An unexpected delegate is a high-priority finding because it gives another account ongoing mailbox access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forwarding

On Forwarding and POP/IMAP, look for a forwarding address you do not own. Gmail may require confirmation before forwarding becomes active, so an unfamiliar confirmed address is particularly important. Disable it and remove the address. Also review any forwarding notice or confirmation message that remains in the mailbox.

Yubico - Security Key NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Key, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.

Scheduled mail and send-as addresses

Check Accounts and Import for Send mail as addresses and Gmail’s scheduled messages area. Remove an outgoing address you did not configure. Open Scheduled in the left navigation and cancel messages you did not create.

Filters and blocked addresses

On Filters and Blocked Addresses, inspect every rule. Attackers sometimes create filters that automatically delete security notices, mark messages as read, archive incoming mail, or forward selected conversations. Delete rules you did not create, then check whether messages were diverted to Trash, Spam, or another label.

POP/IMAP and labels

On Forwarding and POP/IMAP, verify whether POP or IMAP is enabled and whether the setting matches a mail client you actually use. Review labels and nested labels for unexpected organization rules. A missing message may have been archived, moved by a filter, or deleted rather than stolen; search All Mail, Trash, and Spam before concluding that it vanished.

5. Look for mailbox symptoms Google identifies as suspicious

Google Account Help’s page “Investigate suspicious activity on your account” describes Gmail warning signs such as missing incoming email, unusual messages reported by contacts, and sent email the account owner did not write. Use those indicators as a focused mailbox audit.

  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.

Check Sent and account-generated messages

  • Open Sent and look for messages, replies, or invitations you did not compose.
  • Check Drafts and Scheduled for content you did not create.
  • Review password-reset, security-alert, forwarding-confirmation, and app-authorization messages for actions you do not remember.
  • Ask trusted contacts whether they received strange messages from your address.

Check for missing or concealed mail

Search Gmail using terms, senders, and date ranges for messages you expected to receive. Then inspect All Mail, Trash, and Spam. If a filter or forwarding rule was added, identify when it was created if Gmail provides that information and compare it with the suspicious access record.

6. What to do when access is clearly unfamiliar

Act promptly when several signals line up: an unknown device or browser event, an app you never approved, an unexplained delegate or forwarding address, or messages sent without your involvement.

  1. Change your Google Account password. Use a new, unique password that you have not used on another service.
  2. Change reused passwords elsewhere. If the Google password was reused, update those accounts too, starting with email, financial, and workplace services.
  3. Remove unknown devices and linked apps. Sign out of devices you cannot identify and revoke unfamiliar third-party access.
  4. Check recovery details. Verify the recovery phone number, recovery email address, and other account-recovery options. Remove changes you did not make.
  5. Repair Gmail settings. Delete unauthorized delegates, forwarding addresses, filters, send-as addresses, and scheduled messages.
  6. Enable two-step verification. Google recommends it as additional protection. A FIDO2-compatible security key is an optional strong second-verification method, not a requirement for reviewing Gmail activity.
  7. Use account recovery if you cannot sign in. Follow Google’s recovery process from a device and location you normally use.

After changing the password, repeat the device, linked-app, and Gmail activity reviews. A password change addresses future sign-ins, while removing tokens and repairing settings addresses access that may continue through an existing authorization or rule.

How to avoid false alarms

Do not treat the mere presence of an AI tool in your linked apps as proof of compromise. It may be the exact authorization you requested. Do not treat one unfamiliar IP address or distant location as proof either. Access type, time, device, and the corresponding app or mail client provide stronger context than geography alone.

Conversely, a familiar device does not make every action safe. An attacker using a device you own, a stolen browser session, or a previously authorized token may not create an obviously new device entry. That is why the settings audit and Sent-folder review matter even when security events appear ordinary.

Routine follow-up after the audit

  • Keep a record of the app name, permissions, and date you approved it.
  • Revisit linked apps periodically and remove services you no longer use.
  • Review Gmail’s Last account activity when you notice unexplained mail changes.
  • Keep two-step verification enabled and maintain current recovery details.
  • When installing a new AI integration, read every Google permission instead of accepting a generic “allow” prompt.

This process separates three questions that are often confused: whether Google recorded an unfamiliar sign-in, whether Gmail shows access through a client or app, and whether the AI provider may have received or retained data under its own terms. Answering all three gives you a clearer picture than assuming the connection itself explains every suspicious symptom.
