A “GetStringBetween” error has no single universal fix: several APIs use that method name, and their settings and error behavior differ. If your workflow uses Microsoft’s IA-Connect Dynamic Code connector, check the input, boundary strings, line-by-line setting, matching mode, and not-found behavior in that order. First confirm that this is the implementation you are actually using.
First, identify which GetStringBetween you’re using
Microsoft’s IA-Connect Dynamic Code connector documents an operation named GetStringBetween. A separate StringExtensions API reference uses the same method name but shows a different signature, including an optional startFrom parameter. The name alone does not establish that the implementations work alike.
Check the action or connector name in your workflow. If the error comes from a programming-language library or another product, consult that implementation’s own signature and error contract rather than applying Microsoft connector settings to it. See Microsoft’s IA-Connect Dynamic Code connector reference and the StringExtensions API reference.

Microsoft describes the action as taking an input string and returning the first instance of text located between two specified strings, or between a start string and the end of the line. The inputs include the text to search, start and end search strings, whether to search line by line, whether to throw when no match is found, whether to trim the result, whether the search strings are regular expressions, and whether matching is case sensitive.

The end search string can be left blank to search to the end of the line. The documented outputs are Search string found, a boolean, and String between, the extracted text. When throwing on not-found is disabled, the boolean reports whether a match was found.
Diagnose the error in this order
- Verify the implementation. Confirm that the failing step is Microsoft’s IA-Connect Dynamic Code action. If it is another API, use its own documentation and error behavior.
- Inspect the runtime input. Check the actual string passed to the action, not just the value you expect. Include any line breaks and surrounding characters when comparing it with the configured boundaries.
- Check both boundary strings. Verify that the start string occurs in the input and that the end string occurs after it. If you intentionally left the end string blank, the connector is documented to search to the end of the line.
- Review line-by-line search. If the setting is enabled, a match is confined to the current line. If the start and end boundaries are on different lines, check whether line-by-line behavior fits your input.
- Check matching mode. Decide whether the boundary strings should be treated as literal text or regular expressions, and whether capitalization should matter. A mismatch between the configured mode and the actual text can prevent a match.
- Choose how a missing match is handled. With throwing enabled, a missing match raises an exception. With throwing disabled, check Search string found before using String between.
- Check trimming after the match. The trim option removes spaces or tabs around the extracted result. It does not make an absent boundary match.
Use the error message and workflow context to narrow the cause
The connector documentation describes the action’s controls and outputs, but it does not provide a catalog of runtime error strings or version-specific defects. Consequently, the method name alone cannot identify a particular root cause. The exact error message, host application, connector action, and input are needed to distinguish a missing match from a problem specific to another implementation.
For the Microsoft action, work through the checks above against the value supplied at runtime. Compare the actual start and end boundaries, line breaks, capitalization, and matching mode; then check whether the workflow is configured to throw or return a found flag. These are diagnostic checks based on the documented options, not guaranteed fixes for every error.
