To verify an E-Day mod after a patch, first record the game’s new build and read the mod page’s current file notes. Remove duplicate or older PAK files, confirm that the file is in the correct PC installation directory, then compare a clean launch with one mod enabled. Crashes, visual artifacts, delayed texture loading or worse frame pacing after that controlled test indicate that the mod, another installed mod or the game update needs investigation.
These steps apply to the Windows PC versions distributed through Steam or the Xbox app/Microsoft Store. An Xbox Series X|S console does not expose a normal Windows file path for manually copying a PAK.
What “compatible” means after an E-Day update
A mod is compatible when its current files load on your installed game build without introducing reproducible crashes, missing or corrupted visuals, abnormal texture streaming, or materially worse frame pacing. A successful launch alone is not enough: a configuration can load while still causing problems in a particular map, game mode or scene.
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026. It uses Unreal Engine 5 and is available on Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, with PC distribution through Steam and the Microsoft Store and inclusion in Game Pass, according to Xbox’s 2026 product information. A patch can change assets, configuration variables, packaging or executable behavior even when the mod’s filename has not changed.

The AXIS E-DAY OPTIMIZED page on Nexus Mods describes compatibility as ongoing and warns that performance varies with hardware, game mode, map and game updates. It also notes that a configuration that works in another Unreal Engine game cannot automatically be assumed to work the same way in E-Day. Treat every game update as a reason to re-check the specific mod rather than assuming an earlier installation remains valid.
Record the new build before changing files
Do this immediately after the game updates, before launching with any custom files. The build number gives you a precise reference when you check the mod’s changelog or report a problem.
- Open E-Day’s title, properties or main-menu information and note the complete version or build string shown by your installation.
- Write down the date of the update and whether Steam, the Xbox app or Windows itself installed additional files.
- Open the mod’s current page and read its latest version number, changelog, required game build and any warning that mentions the new patch.
- Check whether the author replaced the download, changed the supplied filename or withdrew an older release. Download the current archive rather than reusing an unpacked copy from before the update.
If the mod page does not mention your build, that is an unresolved compatibility question, not proof that the mod is broken. You can still perform a clean-versus-modded test, but keep the result tied to the exact build you recorded.
Remove old revisions and overlapping changes
Unreal Engine PAK files are loaded from the game’s Paks locations. Two revisions of the same mod can override one another in an order that is difficult to predict, and an optimization package can alter the same settings as another optimization package. The AXIS author specifically says to run only one AXIS version at a time and to avoid overlapping optimization packages.

Prepare a one-mod test set
- Close E-Day completely, including any launcher process that is still updating or validating files.
- Open the
~modsfolder and list every custom.pakfile. Move older revisions, renamed copies and duplicates to a temporary folder outside the game directory. - Keep only the single revision you intend to test. Do not combine it with another optimization, texture, lighting or performance package during the first check.
- Do not delete the original archive until the test is complete; the ZIP or other archive is useful if you need to extract a clean copy again.
Keeping one known file in the folder turns a vague “the update broke my mods” report into a reproducible comparison. You can add other mods later, one at a time, after the first file passes its isolated test.
Find the real E-Day installation directory
The correct path depends on the PC storefront. Do not copy a PAK into a download folder, a shortcut’s working directory or a different Unreal Engine game.

In both supported PC layouts, look for the FairlightConcept directory first. Then open Content, followed by Paks. Create a folder named ~mods inside Paks if it does not exist. The tilde is part of the folder name; do not omit it or replace it with a similarly named folder.

- Close the game and wait for the launcher to finish any update, verification or file scan.
- Open the mod archive you downloaded and inspect its contents. Extract the supplied
.pakfile; do not copy the ZIP, 7Z or RAR archive itself into the game folder. - Copy that PAK into
FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods. - Keep the filename supplied by the author unless the release notes explicitly instruct you to rename it. Renaming can change load order or make later troubleshooting harder.
- Confirm that the final location contains the file directly, rather than an extra nested folder such as
~modsModNameModName.pak, unless the author’s instructions specifically require that structure. - Leave every other custom PAK outside the folder for the first compatibility run.
If Windows shows a file with the same name, do not blindly overwrite it. Compare the archive’s version and date with the installed copy, then replace the old file only when the current release notes identify it as the update.

Run a clean baseline before enabling the mod
A clean launch is the control condition for your test. Without it, you cannot tell whether a crash or hitch comes from the patch itself, a damaged base file or the mod.
- Move the test PAK and any other custom PAKs out of
~modstemporarily. - Start E-Day and load the same mode, map or campaign checkpoint you normally use. Record whether it reaches gameplay, how long the first load takes and whether textures appear normally.
- Play long enough to reproduce the situation in which you noticed the problem. Note crashes, missing geometry, shimmering or incorrect textures, audio anomalies and frame-time spikes.
- Exit normally, put only the current mod PAK back into
~mods, and repeat the same scenario under similar graphics settings.
Use the same save, map and camera route where possible. A repeatable route makes a small change in texture loading or frame pacing easier to identify than a general impression from two unrelated sessions.

Interpret symptoms and isolate the cause
Crashes on startup or while loading
First remove the mod PAK and launch clean. If the clean game works, verify that you installed the current revision for your recorded build and that no older copy remains. If the clean game also fails, use the storefront’s file-repair or verification function and retest before reinstalling any mod. Do not add another mod while the base installation is still unverified.

Capture the location and action that triggers the problem, then repeat it once clean and once with the single PAK. Artifacts confined to the modded run indicate a file-level or asset conflict. Move the PAK out, restart the game and confirm that the symptom disappears before testing a newer release.

Unusually slow or incomplete texture loading
Compare the same area after a fresh start. A one-time first-load delay can be caused by shader or asset preparation, but persistent missing textures or a new delay that appears only with the mod should be treated as incompatibility until the author documents a fix.
Worse frame pacing without a lower average frame rate
Watch for uneven delivery, repeated stalls or hitching rather than relying only on the displayed average FPS. Test with the same resolution, ray-tracing setting and frame-rate limit in both runs. If pacing degrades only when the PAK is present, remove it and avoid adding a second optimization package to compensate; overlapping changes obscure which setting caused the regression.
Problems that occur only on one map or mode
The AXIS page warns that performance varies by hardware, game mode, map and update. A file can therefore pass a campaign test and still fail in multiplayer or on a particular map. Record the exact mode and map in your notes and report that scope to the mod author instead of labeling the entire game version incompatible.

Current AXIS instructions use a PAK release placed in FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods. The current page says the older Engine.ini workflow is not for the current PAK release. Do not combine an old Engine.ini tutorial with the new archive unless the author explicitly lists both as required.

Unreal Engine familiarity is not a compatibility guarantee. Settings copied from another Unreal Engine 5 game may use different variables, asset paths or assumptions, which is why the AXIS author cautions that a configuration working elsewhere cannot automatically be expected to work the same way in E-Day.
Steam requirements are not mod-compatibility proof
Steam’s published requirements describe the base game. They list DirectX 12, a hardware-ray-tracing-capable GPU, 115 GB of storage and an SSD requirement, and Steam warns that future updates may require additional space. Meeting those requirements means the unmodified game is within the stated baseline; it does not certify that a particular PAK is compatible with a patch.
- Check available SSD space before updating or extracting a new archive, because the installation may need room for the base game and future update files.
- Confirm DirectX 12 and the required ray-tracing-capable GPU when diagnosing a clean-launch failure.
- Do not use a hardware upgrade as evidence that a mod will work. Hardware can satisfy the game’s baseline while a mod still conflicts with updated assets or code.
If the clean game fails the published baseline, resolve that platform or hardware issue first. If the clean game is stable and only the PAK run fails, the evidence points toward the mod revision or a file conflict rather than the minimum specification itself.
A repeatable update-day checklist
- Write down the new E-Day build and update date.
- Read the mod’s current version, changelog and update-specific warnings.
- Close E-Day completely.
- Remove duplicate, renamed or legacy PAKs from
~mods. - Open the real Steam or Xbox PC installation directory.
- Confirm the target path is
FairlightConceptContentPaks~mods; create~modsif necessary. - Extract the supplied PAK, not the archive, and retain its release filename.
- Launch once with no custom PAK and record the baseline.
- Enable only the current mod and repeat the same scenario.
- If the modded run is worse, move the PAK out, verify the clean result, and wait for an updated release or author guidance before adding other changes.
- If the isolated run is stable, add other mods one at a time, testing after each addition.
This process gives you three useful outcomes: a clean baseline, an isolated result for the updated mod and a clear point at which a conflict appears. Keep the build number, mod version and observed symptom together so a later update can be checked against the same evidence.
When to stop testing and wait for a mod update
Stop treating the file as compatible when the current PAK consistently causes a crash, artifacts, broken texture loading or materially worse frame pacing while the clean game remains stable. Remove it rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Check the author’s page for a release that names your build; ongoing development and update-dependent performance mean that compatibility can change again with the next patch.
There is no universal official guarantee that every E-Day mod remains compatible after every update, and no published industry statistic establishes how often these mods break. Compatibility is therefore a per-mod, per-build judgment based on the recorded version and the clean-versus-modded test.
