Upstream Node.js builds enable SQLite’s FTS5 extension, but that does not guarantee FTS5 is available in every Node executable or deployment. Test the feature in the runtime your application will use, then fall back to a parameterized LIKE search if FTS5 cannot be created. The fallback can preserve basic substring matching, but it is not equivalent to full-text search.

Why FTS5 availability needs a runtime check

node:sqlite exposes database operations; FTS5 availability depends on the SQLite library in the running build. Node.js’s upstream SQLite build configuration includes SQLITE_ENABLE_FTS5, which is evidence for upstream bundled builds—not a guarantee for every downstream distribution, custom Node build, or environment using a shared SQLite library. The Node.js API documentation also labels node:sqlite as release-candidate stability. Check the deployed executable rather than assuming all installations behave alike.

There is no geography-specific variation identified in the official sources, but that does not establish a complete compatibility matrix across Node release lines, operating systems, distributions, and build configurations. See the Node.js SQLite build configuration and the node:sqlite API documentation.

How can I tell whether FTS5 is available in node:sqlite?

PRAGMA compile_options can show build options. SQLite says, “The compile_options pragma can be used to determine which of the options below are used to build SQLite.” That is useful diagnostic context, but a minimal FTS5 table-creation attempt checks whether the operation your application needs actually works.

Use the database connection your application will use, and run the probe during startup or initialization—not on every search request. The example below uses a temporary table and catches errors around table creation. Error wording can vary by SQLite version and build, so the message test is illustrative rather than a guaranteed Node.js error contract.

function supportsFts5(db) {
  try {
    db.exec('CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE temp.__fts5_probe USING fts5(content)');
    db.exec('DROP TABLE temp.__fts5_probe');
    return true;
  } catch (error) {
    if (/no such module|fts5/i.test(String(error?.message))) return false;
    throw error;
  }
}

Do not treat every database error as proof that FTS5 is unavailable. A permissions problem, malformed SQL, or unrelated database failure should surface as an error, not silently switch search modes. In production, ensure the probe table is cleaned up even if a step fails, and fit the probe into the application’s existing transaction and migration design. SQLite’s compile-options pragma documents the diagnostic option.

What to do when FTS5 is unavailable

Route search to an explicitly simpler query over selected columns in an ordinary table. Bind the search term through a prepared statement; escape wildcard characters according to your chosen policy if users are meant to search for them literally. For example, the query shape could be:

SELECT id, title, body
FROM articles
WHERE title LIKE ? OR body LIKE ?;

Bind the intended patterns as parameters rather than interpolating user input into SQL. Node’s database API supports prepared statements and parameter binding; see the node:sqlite API documentation.

A LIKE fallback can find substrings in the columns you choose, but it does not provide FTS5 tokenization, ranking, or query syntax. Keep the caller-facing result shape stable where practical, while avoiding promises of equivalent relevance, stemming, or search behavior. The trade-off is reduced search semantics in exchange for a simpler fallback that does not require an FTS5 virtual table.

Keep FTS5 indexes synchronized and recoverable

If you use an external-content FTS5 table, the application must keep its index aligned with the content source. SQLite warns that inconsistent external content and index state can produce surprising query behavior. An integrity check can detect index problems; for external-content tables, use rank=1 to compare the index against the external content table. The rebuild command reconstructs the index from its table or content source.

These maintenance commands are recovery tools, not replacements for synchronization logic. Keep triggers or application update logic in place so inserts, updates, and deletes do not leave the full-text index stale. See SQLite’s FTS5 documentation for external-content, integrity-check, and rebuild behavior.
