There is no universal hard-drive firmware file or update button. Firmware is specific to a drive model, and many drives have no update available. Identify the exact drive and check its manufacturer’s current instructions first; if the drive works normally and the manufacturer offers no update for it, leave its firmware alone.

1. Identify the exact drive and check whether an update exists

Before downloading anything, determine whether the device is an HDD or SSD and record its manufacturer, full model or part number, serial number, and installed firmware revision. You can usually find the model and serial on the drive’s label or in the computer’s system information; the manufacturer’s utility or support page may show the firmware revision.

Search the manufacturer’s official support materials using the complete model or serial number. Seagate’s Download Finder requests a serial number and model or part number. Seagate says firmware updates are available only for certain drive families, so no result means you should not substitute a file for a similar model.

For Western Digital products, check the current policy for the specific product class. WD says most internal and external drives do not have firmware updates. Its current support article, displayed as updated June 12, 2026, says retail color-brand HDD updates, when available, are delivered through Windows software and names Kitfox for internal drive updates. Certain in-warranty Ultrastar drives may be eligible through WD Support after registration and submission of the drive details. WD says not to attempt firmware updates on portable or desktop drives, and that OEM drives are unsupported. See WD’s firmware update guidance for the applicable product-class rules.

2. Prepare before you run an update

  • Back up important files to a separate location. A firmware update is not a substitute for a backup. Seagate warns that improper execution could destroy data or make a drive inoperable.
  • Read the exact package instructions and release notes. Confirm that the package names your precise model and current firmware, and check any stated operating-system or connection requirements.
  • Save your work and close applications. Disconnect external storage only if the specific utility instructs you to do so.
  • Keep power stable. Use reliable power for the computer and drive, and do not power off or disconnect the drive while an update is running.
  • Stop if the drive is part of RAID or an OEM system and the procedure is unclear. Seagate’s documented utility says not to run it on RAID systems. For a drive supplied inside a branded computer, ask the computer maker whether it provides the supported update.

3. Use only the manufacturer’s procedure for that drive

Seagate drives

Follow the steps in the specific Seagate package rather than treating all Seagate drives alike. In the documented utility workflow, the user checks that the package title covers the product and firmware version, then reboots into the update environment. The utility scans the attached drives and displays each matching drive’s model, serial number, and current firmware revision before attempting installation. It may exit without installing if the firmware is already current, the version is incompatible, or no model matches. Do not bypass those checks or force the update. Seagate’s Firmware Update Utility Instructions and FAQ warns: “If the upgrade instructions are not followed properly, the upgrade could be data-destructive and/or render your hard drive inoperable.”

Western Digital HDDs

WD’s supported retail HDD process depends on the product class and software. Its current guidance directs eligible retail color-brand HDD updates through Windows software and identifies Kitfox for internal drive updates. Do not apply those steps to portable or desktop products, OEM drives, or a different drive family; use WD’s current support material for the exact product.

SSDs

Do not assume an SSD follows an HDD procedure. SATA and NVMe SSDs, and SSDs from different manufacturers, can use different tools and completion steps. WD’s SSD Dashboard manuals describe SSD-specific operations, but those manuals are product-specific rather than a universal current procedure. For example, one WD Green SATA SSD manual says to keep wall power connected and that a full-system shutdown may be needed to complete the update. Apply that instruction only if it matches the exact model and procedure; follow the current instructions for your own SSD.

4. Let the update finish, then verify the result

Leave the drive connected and powered until the manufacturer’s utility says the operation is complete. Reboot or shut down only when that utility’s instructions call for it. Afterward, use the vendor tool or operating-system drive information to check the firmware revision against the version the package intended to install.

5. What to do if the update is unavailable or fails a check

  • No update is listed: Do not look for firmware on third-party download sites or try a file for a similar-looking model. The manufacturer may not provide an update for that drive.
  • The utility reports a model mismatch or incompatible firmware: Stop. Recheck the model, part number, serial number, and package eligibility; do not force the installation.
  • The utility says the firmware is already current: Do not repeat the update using another package unless the manufacturer directs you to.
  • The drive is part of a RAID array or came with an OEM computer: Contact the system builder or computer manufacturer for the supported process. Seagate says system manufacturers usually handle firmware updates for Seagate drives installed in name-brand computer systems.
  • The update is unclear for the product class or warranty status: Ask the drive manufacturer’s support team before proceeding. For WD OEM drives, contact the computer or system maker because WD says OEM firmware support is unavailable.
