A sudden drop in reach is not proof of a shadowban. Platforms use different notices and rules for search, account access, and recommendations, so start by checking the platform’s own status message or the affected post. Then address the stated issue or appeal it if you believe the decision is wrong. There is no universal fix or guaranteed recovery timeline.
What does “shadowban” mean?
“Shadowban” is an informal label, not one universal platform status. It may refer to an account limitation, a post excluded from search or recommendations, or a spam or inauthentic-activity flag. These outcomes are not interchangeable: a post can remain on your profile while being excluded from recommendations, and recommendation ineligibility is not the same as account suspension.
Platforms also distinguish whether content is allowed to stay up from whether it is eligible to be recommended. Meta has described recommendation guidelines as stricter than the rules for content allowed to remain on its platforms; that broad distinction does not establish current Instagram menu steps or appeal timing. How do I know if I’m shadowbanned?
Look for a specific platform signal before drawing a conclusion from view counts. Identify whether you see an account-status warning, a notice about a particular post, a limitation on features, a search-only problem, or only lower reach. Check notifications and the platform’s status tools for the reason and affected content.

- A warning or status notice: Read what feature or content the platform says is affected, and follow the linked instructions.
- A post-specific label: Determine whether the post is removed, limited in discoverability, or simply ineligible for recommendations.
- A reach drop without a notice: Treat it as a symptom to investigate, not proof of enforcement. Views can fall for ordinary distribution or engagement reasons.
- One failed search: Check visibility settings, filters, and relevance before inferring an account-wide restriction.
On TikTok, Account check is available through TikTok Studio or the Safety Center. A checkmark indicates no issue for the feature checked; a warning indicates an issue. The tool can show restrictions affecting login, posting, commenting, profile edits, and direct messages. TikTok’s account-status guidance.
Reddit says posts, comments, messages, or a profile that do not appear as expected might indicate a spam or inauthentic-activity flag. Bans for rule violations and security locks are separate situations with their own explanations and next steps. Some appeals about spam, inauthentic activity, or ban evasion may not result in an inbox message, so the absence of a notice does not settle the question. Why are my posts not showing up in search?
Check visibility and search settings first
On X, protected posts are not public; an unconfirmed email, sensitive-content filtering, and search relevance can also affect whether a post appears. X says search does not include every post, so a single missing result does not demonstrate account-wide suppression. Review X’s search guidance and the post’s audience and content-filter settings.

Search visibility can differ from recommendation eligibility
A post can remain available on an author’s profile or to followers while being ineligible for recommendation. X describes recommendation exclusions for certain accounts and content, including accounts recently violating rules or believed to be engaging in spammy behavior. X’s recommendation guidance.

TikTok says repeated posts unsuitable for the For You feed may make an account and its posts ineligible for that feed and harder to find in search. Content that remains on TikTok is not necessarily eligible for recommendation; eligible content may still be discovered through search or by following. Why did my reach suddenly drop?
Reach can change without an account-wide penalty. A post may be excluded from recommendations while remaining visible to followers, or views may be low because of audience response. On X, ordinary search and filtering conditions can also make a post harder to find. The useful distinction is not simply “visible” versus “hidden,” but what surface is affected: account features, one post, search, recommendations, or distribution more generally.

Do not delete posts, change hashtags, stop using the account, pay for a service, or create another account solely because views fell. The platform guidance cited here does not establish those actions as ways to remove restrictions or restore reach. If a platform has identified a specific problem, respond to that notice instead.

- Open the in-product limited-state notice, if one appears, and follow its instructions. X may request phone or email verification, and its notice may explain what feature is limited.
- If a particular post has a visibility label, review the explanation. X says post-level actions can exclude content from search, trends, recommendations, or timelines, or limit discoverability to the author’s profile.
- If you believe a limitation or visibility action is mistaken, use the appeal route provided by X. X’s locked and limited accounts guidance and X’s enforcement options.
X does not give one duration that applies to all limited-state cases on the cited support page. A specified limitation may have its own stated time or required action.

TikTok
- Open TikTok Studio or the Safety Center, then check Account check for feature-level warnings.
- If TikTok marks the account ineligible for recommendation, inspect the notice in Inbox or on the Profile page and review the affected content identified there.
- Use the appeal option attached to the notice if you believe the decision is wrong. TikTok says it may automatically restore good standing depending on the amount of unsuitable content, but the cited guidance gives no fixed recovery period. TikTok’s recommendation-eligibility guidance.
- Review account messages and Reddit’s account-status guidance to distinguish a possible spam or inauthentic-activity flag from a ban or security lock.
- If Reddit identifies a ban or other decision you believe is mistaken, use the appeal route in the notice or the official appeal form: Reddit’s request form.
Do not treat one missing Reddit post as proof of a single hidden account state; the platform describes several different account and content issues that can affect visibility.
How should I appeal a recommendation restriction?
Use the appeal action attached to the platform’s notice or its official process. Keep the appeal focused on the decision being challenged: identify the notice or affected content, state briefly why you believe the decision is mistaken, and provide relevant context. Do not assume an appeal will succeed or that a successful appeal guarantees immediate reach restoration; the cited platform guidance does not promise either outcome.
How long does a shadowban last?
There is no universal shadowban duration. X says some limited features may be restricted for a specified time, but its cited guidance does not give one duration for all cases. TikTok says it may automatically restore good standing depending on the amount of unsuitable content, without specifying a fixed timeline on the cited page. Check the platform’s notice and status tools rather than relying on a general waiting period.
