Your router may report live bandwidth, historical data consumption, or detailed traffic by device. These are different measurements: a speed test shows how fast the connection is right now, while a usage counter adds up transferred data over time.
The exact menu depends on the router or mesh system. Use the matching instructions below, then check the limitations if the figures do not match your internet provider’s data meter.
What router data usage actually measures
Most router usage tools count traffic crossing the router’s Internet or WAN connection. They normally include downloads and uploads from devices on your home network. They usually do not count traffic that remains inside the LAN, such as copying a file between two computers or streaming from a local media server.
| Information shown | What it means | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Current bandwidth | Transfer speed at this moment, usually in Mbps | Finding out whether the network is busy now |
| Historical usage | Total downloaded and uploaded data over a period, usually GB or TB | Investigating data-cap usage |
| Per-device usage | Traffic attributed to a phone, computer, console, camera, or other client | Finding which device is consuming data |
| Traffic details | Sessions, ports, destinations, categories, or applications | Network troubleshooting and security investigations |
A speed test is not a monthly usage report. Running a speed test measures available performance and itself transfers some data; it does not tell you how much your household has consumed during a billing cycle.

NETGEAR Nighthawk
Using the web interface
- Connect to the Nighthawk network.
- Open
http://www.routerlogin.net. - Sign in with the router administrator account.
- Open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Traffic Meter.
- Turn on Enable Traffic Meter.
- Select Traffic Status for more detailed transfer information.
Traffic Meter counts traffic passing through the router’s Internet port and can also support traffic-volume limits. It is intended to show the home network’s upload and download totals rather than traffic exchanged solely between local devices.
Using the Nighthawk app
- Open the Nighthawk app.
- Tap the menu in the upper-left corner.
- Tap your router model.
- If necessary, choose Connected Locally.
- Tap the Traffic Meter tile.
- Turn on Enable.
If Traffic Meter is unavailable, check whether the router is operating in Access Point (AP) mode. NETGEAR disables this feature in AP mode because another device is performing the routing function.
TP-Link routers
On TP-Link models that support Traffic Statistics, use the web interface:

- Turn on Traffic monitor.
- Select an individual device or view all connected devices.
- Choose a period such as 10 minutes, 24 hours, or 7 days.
The Traffic Monitor List shows per-device totals. Use Refresh to update the display. Be careful with Reset All: it returns the listed statistics to zero and can destroy the baseline you need for comparison.
Some TP-Link modem-router models use Advanced > System Tools > Traffic Monitor instead. The menu and available history vary by model and firmware, so search the model-specific manual if neither path exists.
ASUS routers
- Sign in to the ASUS router interface.
- Open Settings > Adaptive QoS > Bandwidth Monitor.
- Review total download and upload bandwidth.
- Check the individual-client section to see which devices are currently using bandwidth.
ASUS’s Bandwidth Monitor is primarily a current-bandwidth view rather than a guaranteed monthly accounting system. Its availability varies by model; the router specification should list Adaptive QoS and Bandwidth Monitor.
Some ASUS firmware also provides application analysis. Treat application labels as estimates: encrypted SSL traffic may be classified only as general traffic instead of being identified by a specific application.
eero mesh systems
View one device’s live usage
- Open the eero app.
- Find the device under Devices on the Home tab, or search from the Devices tab.
- Open the device.
- View Activity.

UniFi gateways
UniFi’s detailed traffic tools require compatible hardware and current software. On supported installations:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the UniFi Network application.
- Go to Insights > Flows.
- Filter or select traffic flows.
Traffic Flows can show completed sessions, transferred bytes, session duration, source and destination ports, whether traffic was allowed or blocked, and applied policies. The documented requirements are UniFi Network 9.1 or later, UniFi OS 4.2.8 or later, and a supported UniFi Gateway.
For application-oriented classification, enable traffic identification under UniFi Network Settings > System > Advanced. Compatibility is not universal. Ubiquiti excludes several models from Traffic Flows, including UDR, UDR7, UDR 5G Max, Express, Express 7, UDM, UCG-Ultra, and UXG-Lite.
If your router has no usage dashboard
Look in the manual or administration interface for one of these names:
- Traffic Monitor
- Traffic Statistics
- Traffic Meter
- Bandwidth Monitor
- Traffic Analyzer
- Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)
Then verify that the device you are checking is actually the network’s router. If your Wi-Fi router is connected behind an ISP gateway, modem-router, or another router, the upstream device may be the one performing NAT and DHCP. A downstream access point cannot reliably account for all Internet traffic.

Also check whether the router is in AP mode, bridge mode, or mesh-node mode. Those modes can remove or restrict traffic-monitoring features because routing is handled elsewhere.
When the router offers no useful history, check the ISP’s customer portal. For example, Xfinity customers can use the online Devices page and its Data Usage Overview, or view usage through the Xfinity app. The ISP’s meter is the relevant reference for a provider data cap.

The router and ISP show different totals
They measure at different points and may use different billing periods, rounding rules, or traffic-accounting rules. Use the ISP’s meter for billing and data-cap enforcement. Use the router’s per-device figures to identify the likely source of heavy usage.
An unfamiliar device appears
Do not assume it is an intruder immediately. Compare the entry’s MAC address, IP address, manufacturer, hostname, and connection status with the devices in your home. Phones, tablets, and computers may use private or randomized Wi-Fi MAC addresses. One physical device can therefore appear as a new client, or create multiple historical entries.
A counter suddenly starts at zero
Many router counters are resettable statistics rather than permanent records. TP-Link, for example, provides Reset All. Do not reset a counter while trying to compare it with an ISP billing period; record the date and starting value first.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Application details are missing
HTTPS and other encrypted traffic make precise application identification difficult. A router may show a category or generic encrypted traffic instead of the exact app or website. Classification is an indication, not proof of the person, process, or content responsible for every byte.
Mesh totals seem inconsistent
Check the primary router or the mesh controller for the whole-network total. A satellite or access point may show its connected clients without representing the complete WAN total. In Google’s system, the main device view includes clients connected through Wifi points and Ethernet; eero provides network-level figures through its Activity views.
A practical way to investigate high usage
- Write down the ISP’s current usage total and the date or billing-period boundaries.
- Open the router’s traffic page and identify the largest devices by download and upload totals.
- Match unfamiliar entries using MAC address, manufacturer, IP address, and hostname.
- Check high-usage devices for cloud backups, game downloads, operating-system updates, security-camera uploads, and video streaming.
- Compare the router and ISP totals without expecting an exact match.
- Do not reset the router’s statistics until you have recorded the current values.
FAQ
Can I check Wi-Fi data usage without logging in to the router?
Usually not for device-level usage. You may be able to see a provider-wide total in your ISP account or app, but per-device figures normally require the router or mesh app’s administrator access.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does my router show less data than my ISP?
The router and ISP measure traffic at different network points and may use different accounting periods or rules. Treat the ISP meter as authoritative for billing or data caps, and use the router to locate heavy-using devices.
Does a connected-device list show how much data each device used?
No. A connected-device list only shows current or recent connections unless the router also provides traffic statistics or a usage report.
Why does one phone appear as several devices?
Private or randomized Wi-Fi MAC addresses can cause a phone or tablet to appear under different client records. Compare the entries’ manufacturer, IP address, hostname, and connection details before treating them as separate physical devices.
The Bottom Line
Open the router or mesh system’s traffic-monitoring page, not its speed-test page or ordinary connected-device list. Google, NETGEAR, TP-Link, ASUS, eero, and UniFi place these controls in different menus, and some models do not retain historical totals at all. If the router is in AP mode or sits behind another gateway, check the device doing the routing. For data-cap decisions, use the ISP’s usage meter; for finding the device responsible, use the router’s per-client statistics.
